Was not what we expected when we walked in.. very interesting place, the waitresses wear strange elastic cloth shower caps and "period costumes" for a "colonial" theme with sneakers. The waiters wear what looks like a medieval times vest? I ordered sweet tea, unfourtenetly they don't serve this here, interesting from a restaurant boasting southern cooking. The waiter was awesome tho, very attentive and friendly. I ordered the peanut soup which I must say is delicious although my boyfriend thought otherwise. The steak I had for my main course wasn't terrible but I gave most of it to my boyfriend to eat due to it being tough. My plate also came with 2 stuffed shrimp, best I've had. The ambiance here is strange and twilight zone like but hey, I'm into that kind of thing. I do recommend this establishment, just not the steak. read more

This is our favorite restaurant in the Williamsburg area. We've been here many times and often take out of town family and friends here for a treat when they visit. The menu has a nice variety of categories to choose from but each category is limited to a few specialties. The wait staff and owner are friendly folk and enjoy engaging you in conversation. The colonial atmosphere adds a pleasant feel to the experience. We've never been disappointed and definitely plan to return! read more

My husband and I recently had dinner here. We didn't intend to stop here but it didn't look too busy as it had just opened for dinner. The restaurant was clean and quiet, with some smooth jazz playing over the speakers. Our waitress, Georgia, immediately came over for our drinks. The menu is not extensive but the food we had was very well done. My steak was done just as I had ordered. Nothing too fancy but we had a very good time. Don't bother trying. Staff super nice (so 2 stars) , food horrid, decor 1960's and tired. I had the delmonico steak with onion rings. Asked for medium and got well done. And....the steak was sprinkled with oregano! What! The onion rings were inedible. Like the were fried in oil not yet hot enough. My cup of coffee (a fresh pot was just put on when I ordered) was worse than any fast food place. All in all a pricey bad meal which is really sad. This was one of the worst restaurants I've eaten in. Service was excellent. Food was beyond horrible. I had salmon, it was full of fat and tasted like old bay. Green beans from a can and they tasted like the can. Salad was drenched in dressing. My boyfriend had chicken breasts with mashed potatoes and the famous peanut soup. The soup was thicker than gravy and tasted like chicken gravy with peanuts. The chicken dry and over seasoned with oregano. I cannot begin to describe the mashed potatoes. Oh my, I would not return, ever. Period decor and dress was unusual. The crabcakes were all filler, and I'm not sure the crab was even crab - smelled fishy. The mashed potatoes seemed to be from a box and they added in shredded potatoes to give it the "lumpy" feel. This place is stuck in a serious time warp. I know they were trying to go for a historical old time feel but I felt they failed and just came off as outdated. We were seated quickly, since there was hardly anyone else there so that was good. Then we had to wait. The waitstaff seemed confused over who actually had our table. When the waitress finally came she hardly spoke and seemed uninterested in waiting on us. My husband's steak was good but my prime rib was close to the worst I've had. She was like a little Mother standing by to make sure her kids enjoyed at first bite. She let us know that the greek dressing is her recipe. OMG!!! I could just go there for wine and bread with a side of her greek dressing. AND I SELDOM eat bread. Almost forgot: My brother was not sure about ordering the Lobster. Georgia was quick to say.. "Hold on, I will be right back!" Next thing we know, Mark the owner came over and sat at the table .... Before long he had convinced my brother that he would not go wrong with Lobster. We were so happy with our choice to have dinner at the Jefferson, Saturday evening. I had the ribeye steak and it was cooked to perfection and very tender. My husband enjoyed the visitor special of country fried steak and said it was delicious. Ate there last week while visiting Williamsburg. Only four other people in the restaurant at dinner time and that should have given me a hint. Menu was good. Ordered crab cake and ham special. Ham steak was the same as I would buy in the grocery store for breakfast. Crab cake was awful. Green beans were fine. Husband ordered filet mignon. Steak was fine - for $30 it should be. Problem was he ordered mashed potatoes and beans. Never brought the potatoes. Told a busperson and she went to find the server. Ten minutes later I went to the kitchen to find her. She was chatting in the kitchen. I asked her about the mashed potatoes. She actually looked in her book to see if they were ordered. She brought them out a few minutes later with no apology. By that time we all had finished and his meat was cold. I told the person when we checked out (since he asked how things were). He took 10% off. Six bucks. That was it. The place wasn't busy. There was no excuse for this. The meal should have been comped at the least. Too many other places to eat in Williamsburg. Don't waste your money here. read more

My husband and I had dinner here while vacationing in Williamsburg. I have to say the hospitality is absolutely the best. The hostess was the friendliest young lady! She had a smile on her face from the time we walked in until the time she seated us. The restaurant has a homey atmosphere. I had the salmon dinner which was delicious and my husband had the fried chicken and ribs. He said the ribs were great, but the chicken was a little dry but that didn't stop him from eating it. lol From our experience, restaurants usually cook fried chicken a little too long. The owner/manager/cashier was just as friendly as the hostess. Our waiter was nice, but not as cheerful as the hostess. Either he was new or just didn't want to be working at that time. This is off season but place was busy.wait staff all were over 65 but were friendly and prompt. They gave us a sample of their signature peanut soup but it was bland do we did not order. While visiting the Williamsburg area, my sister and I decided to try this restaurant. The food was just okay, and the restaurant really needs a makeover and some cleaning. The tables are set with chipped and scratched black plates. My dinner was served on a plate that had at least seven chips. The servers were friendly but the colonial outfits they were dressed in appeared to be stained and one had a cigarette burn.. The Jefferson Restaurant was the highlight of a wonderful trip to Williamsburg, Va. It was a blast from the past with real food I have not experienced since I was a child growing up in the Old South. I have had many more expensive meals but I have never had any better than this. The Jefferson crab cake is the real thing full of sweet tender fresh crab meat. The ham steak was an full center cut and was out of this world. The cocktails were well mixed and delightful.
