Having been to three different memory care places and finding them so disappointing, we were thrilled to find that The Kensington stays true to its promise. My husband said he feels safe here and that they treat him so well. Instead of sitting around, he has activities all the time. The Kensington provided the care that my wife needed that I could not provide at home. The staff was always compassionate and patient. The food was good, my wife never complained. The fact that family and friends could join my wife for meals at no charge is amazing. The office staff and general manager were particularly helpful with administrative chores like processing Long Term Care claims. My mom spent the final three years of her life at the Kensington, and having her there was, at all times, a great source of comfort to me and my family. To a person, the staff is attentive, caring and compassionate. I visited my mom often and a various times of day and always found a good "vibe" at the residence: cheerful, collaborative aides and other workers, engaged supervisors and administrators, and an atmosphere closer to a nice hotel than a senior home. read more

The Kensington: About two years ago, a friend of mine arranged to have his mother admitted into The Kensington, an enhanced assisted living facility in White Plains. He had done a great deal of research and concluded that The Kensington offered the finest services for his ailing mother. While my mother in law had been in an independent living facility for the last few years, after she fell and had had surgery, we realized that she needed far more services since she would not have been able to return to her old lifestyle. Searching for an assisted living facility that offered excellent physical therapy during the pandemic presented many obstacles. However, on the recommendation of my friend, we called The Kensington and spoke with Jeanne Rosenberg, the Director of Community Relations. Jeanne invited us to visit the Kensington and we spent over two hours touring their beautiful facility. The Kensington, which was built about ten years ago and located on Maple Avenue just a block away from White Plains Hospital, looks more like a Five star hotel than an assisted living facility. Jeanne spent time showing us their dining room, where residents could choose from an impressive menu. I spoke to a few of the residents who raved about the chef and their amazing meals. I was surprised and impressed to discover that their chef, Norman Fitz, has been with the Kensington since they opened in 2011. After we toured their entire facility including where my beloved mother in law would be receiving her physical therapy, we knew that soon The Kensington would be her new home. She moved in a few weeks later after being interviewed by their medical team and has adjusted wonderfully to her new home. There is a staff of over 100 people working there every day and we have been impressed with their dedication as well as the almost daily communications we have had with Susie Sarkisian, the Director of Community and Family Services. While the decision to move a family member into a nursing home or an enhanced assisted living facility is filled with anxiety and trepidation, we have been so grateful for how professional and supportive the staff of the Kensington has been, And most importantly, my mother in law, who had seemed so depressed and feeble has become stronger and healthier since she has become a resident at the Kensington! read more

My wife's mom stayed for only 3 weeks at The Kensington in February after a long and difficult stay at Tarrytown Hall. She had been very ill and passed shortly after she was admitted. However, I will say that this facility is just wonderful. From the moment I called and how quickly they got back to me to her final days , I was happy with everything I saw at The Kensington. I used to be a Nursing Home Complaint Investigator and learned that the best facilities just have a good vibe - The residents seem alert and happy, the staff is responsive, people smile, and the place smells good (I know that sounds odd, but I found in doing that job that a place could have a great reputation, but if you walked in and smelled something "Off", there would usually be quality of care issues and worse - The best example is a world-famous nursing home in Riverdale that overlooks the Hudson: World-Class art in the lobby, several high-profile residents, and the whole place stunk of urine - NOT good). At the Kensington, every staff member I spoke to was helpful, responsive, and well-trained. Little Details - Like the Sign placed outside my mother-in-law's room, welcoming her and letting everyone know who she was, Staff responding immediately to the call button, good food and menu options in the restaurant, and lots of groups to watch documentaries, discussions, and low-impact exercise sessions - The List goes on and on... We are still sad about Maria's passing, but I do know that we had her set up for a really good end-of-life stay at this great facility, I just wish we could have enjoyed it a little longer. read more

Would NOT recommend this facility, they don't take care of residents properly. There are too many patients and not enough nurses. Most of the "nurses" are not RN's they are LPN's. Very hard to get an RN. Not enough activities for residents that are capable and they are bored. The food is terrible and most other facilities have higher quality food. The residents do not get the services they require. read more

My father lived at the Kensington for over four years. I am sure his life was extended by their wonderful care. The caregivers that took care of him were very special people. Sharon and Klara provided him with exceptional care, on both his good and bad days. The staff at the Kensington catered to his fussy food needs with finesse. Their kindness in helping him adjust to returning to NY after losing his wife was touching. Family was always made to feel comfortable. At the end of my Dad's life, his care was kind and compassionate. MaryAnn and her nursing staff went above and beyond anything I could have asked for. Terrible! A corporate facility, and at the end i had a non resuscitation order, they ignored it, i found my relative in a hospital alone and the hospital staff tried many times to resusitate her. The hospital could not understand why I was upset. My relative had been in the kensington for over two years and they could not charge me for another two hours of care until i arrived so my relative would not die alone. I could not talk to anybody in the kensington. read more

My parents were in The Kensington for approximately a year. We live in NJ and we moved them because their financial situation changed, as well as wanting them to be closer to where we live. The Kensington has a warm and lovely environment, but what was truly important and always impressive, was an atmosphere of caring. Truly caring. It is run by people who have compassion and they appear to screen for that in their staff. I knew this. I saw this every time I'd visit (which was at least once a week). After having moved my parents to the ('Luxury") assisted living facility in which they've been for the past 11 months, it's become glaringly apparent how unusual the compassionate, kind atmosphere in The Kensington is. I wish I could move them back! read more

My 70-year-old wife has advanced frontotemporal dementia. I tried to take care of her at home with some outside help. When I realized I could no longer manage this, I visited four recommended assisted living facilities within easy driving distance. One was depressing -- I knew when I walked in the door that it wouldn't be right for her. Another was a clear possibility, although I suspected that my wife would probably have to be moved to another building on the same campus as her condition worsened. A third was highly touted by our psychiatrist who had been treating my wife. I asked him about the fourth place I had visited, The Kensington. He was familiar with it. The upside: "It's new," he said, and looks like a four-star hotel. The downside: "It's new," a warning that it was still finding its footing. More than a year has passed since my wife subsequently moved to The Kensington, and I realize that he made points worth considering. To address his concern, I'm sure my wife presented the staff with behavioral/emotional challenges beyond what they had anticipated. There were times when I worried about burnout among the very hard-working certified nurse assistants (CNAs), the front-line of care. There has been some turnover in their ranks. Another consideration is cost; it challenges my budget. In all other respects, I highly recommend this place for someone like my wife. She will not have to move from her memory-care floor called Haven. It's a lively place with frequent activities, visits from entertainers and -- currently, at least -- sessions with a music therapist. Advanced licensure here means the staff (a nurse is always on duty) can handle many aspects of care that used to require transfer to a nursing home. Food is far better than standard institutional fare, and family and friends are welcomed to dine with residents (no charge, no tipping, reservations required). Not least, I've found that the care extends to me. I meet weekly with a staff member well versed in the challenges of caregiving and dealing with cruel disease. Informally, I've made many friends at this place and (unexpectedly) discovered a kind of second marriage with my disabled wife -- a different person from the woman I knew but adorable and far happier than she was at home. read more

My mother has been at the Kensington since it opened in the fall of 2011 and have had nothing but positive things to say about it. She started out on a lower floor (considered the assisted living portion of the building) and then as her condition worsened, was able to age in place and be cared for on the 5th floor Havens community, dealing with more advanced memory care issues ie., Alzheimers and Dementia. We toured several "highly rated" facilities before finding the Kensington and they were old and depressing and I couldn't IMAGINE leaving my mother there! Everything is first rate at The K - from the Director to the caregivers to the chef to the janitorial staff (the place is always spotless)! The bottom line is your loved one is actually being loved when you can't be there to do it yourself. My hours are very sporadic and I pop in and out at various times and days and EVERY time I do, she is being engaged in some activity or someone is there playing live music for the residents. The aids are really wonderful people and care about each individual resident. They bond with them and are the reason our parents/grandparents thrive in their care. Director, Celina Watson sets the tone for a warm and loving atmosphere where everyone is treated like family. The common thread there is that everyone truly cares. Norm, the chef, prepares wonderful meals and families are encouraged to join their loved ones in the beautiful dining room whenever possible. It's such a major decision where to put your parents...NO body wants to do it but the truth is that they can care for them better than we can sometimes. The Kensington is the reason I can sleep at night! I rest easily knowing she is in great hands.It is truly a special and unique place! read more

My sister and I cannot say enough about The Kensington. We thought our Mom was near death in another assisted living facility, which we were happy with but we knew she needed more medical care than her place could provide. We heard about The Kensington and were sold right away. Being a newer facility, it had a higher licensure for more care. Mom went on to happily live there for two more years! She went to museums and parks, learned to use the computer, and on and on. The staff was wonderful! The accommodations, the food, the entertainment were all good. The convenience of having a rehab facility on-site was invaluable! Unfortunately, Mom frequently would fall and need rehab where she almost always went crazy. That never happened once she was at The Kensington. The staff there really did treat us all like family. So much so, that when Mom did pass at the age of 90, we had our memorial service right there! We will always be grateful to The Kensington, and will miss all those wonderful people there. Martha S. read more

We moved my mother into The Kensington shortly after it opened in late 2011. She had lived in an assisted living facility in another state that over time was run and managed by three different companies, and had even moved in with our family for a time. The beauty, warmth and care and activities The Kensington offered drew us to try another situation for her, one that has worked out beautifully. The enhanced license The Kensington holds in New York allows them to provide my mother, who has great physical limitations due to advanced Multiple Sclerosis, the kind of specialized care her condition requires, and they provide that care with skill and grace. Just recently, unsolicited, my mother told me that she is receiving the best care at The Kensington that she has ever received any place else. As her daughter, I can say that The Kensington's greatest asset is its staff, from the chef and servers in the dining room, to the nurses, care managers, office staff, and executive leadership. The warmth and caring shown by the staff to my mother (and to our family in general) is touching. Their professionalism and kindness is a direct reflection of the skill and leadership of The Kensington's Executive Director and the team with which she has surrounded herself. Her door is always open and she is always eager to assist with any question, challenge, or request. This gives our family a great sense of peace as we know that should a problem ever arise, we know it will be dealt with promptly and successfully. Moving a loved one, especially a parent, into an assisted living facility is a difficult thing to do, but when that facility offers every amenity one could think of, a kind and caring staff, and a feeling of hominess for the resident and welcoming for the family, you as the daughter or son will sleep well at night. I rest easy knowing my mother is being monitored and receiving top-notch care in every way, that her needs are more than met, that she is having fun, that the staff cares about her and communicates that to her family, and that the Executive Director has created an atmosphere anyone would feel safe and happy moving their loved one into. read more
