My mom is sharp & vibrant , she had a limited number of people with whom she could engage, converse and do stuff with. Between that and not wanting to live in an aging body, she was less interested in in longevity, nor did she wish to live any longer. Over the last weeks of her life, she was able to visit with everybody in her family, the entire care team was incredibly supportive. We had a wonderful hospice team and the entire staff at Atria was so caring and embracing.

For example, Seba drove 3 hrs round trip in traffic to visit my parents, brought them culturally appropriate food and spoke w/ them for hours. Without this visit, despite my dad's cancer and mom's dementia, there would have been no way my parents would have agreed to move out of their house. My dad's care was very demanding due to his late stage cancer. My mom's dementia necessitates quite a bit of hand holding, and the Atria's driver, Dino, coordinated most of their doctors appointment. Enza, the sales director, went out of her way to help my family through this difficult time. The key part is that my parents both felt like they had their independence which translated to their happiness. Due to the small community, the staff and tenants became like family and we still keep in touch months after my mom moved out. Some of the staff and tenants still calls my mom to see how she's doing. My mom looks back very fondly of her time at this Atria.

There is a hefty fee for an independent living apt and a large upfront medical fee as well, but you are guaranteed an assisted living apt, rehab and nursing home care as well as a section for mental decline if you ever need any if these services for the same monthly fee you pay for the independent living apt. In the long run the initial expense is worth it. Kendal itself is wonderful. People greet you when you are in the common areas and staff members are as nice as the residents. The activities which are resident conceived and run are varied. Many intellectual offerings ranging from book clubs, interesting lectures, concerts and opera films. There are craft rooms which the residents run as well and an indoor pool,,o physical therapy and rehab. I live here and love it.

Due to several upsetting incidents, we asked about placing a camera in their room. We were informed cameras were NOT permitted by Kendal on Hudson (except in independent living). After our loved one passed away, our family arrived to clear out their room in the Sunnyside section and were shocked to find it had been left unlocked since our loved one had been taken into the hospital. Upon entering the room it was obvious many items were missing. We informed the administrator and were treated terribly. Ultimately, the incident was reported to the police. It was an awful time for our family, made so much worse by the treatment we received, and the complete lack of accountability or responsibility for protecting our loved one's property. Kendal's policy of no cameras throughout areas of the care sections, including residents' rooms, allowed them to completely control the narrative. This really made us question some of our earlier concerns. I wish we had a better experience because our loved one sold their family home to enter this facility. Unless Kendal on Hudson has changed their policy, I would suggest you consider a facility with a camera-friendly policy, as it's often the only witness these vulnerable residents have.

Once they took him it turned out to be the opposite of what they sold. Their sales people are not educated in health care. In the case of our Father, we were transparent about his Dementia and unsure what the proper place was for him. They assured us that they were familiar and had the proper structure in place to give him adequate care. They went further to say that they were building out a memory care unit which he would be perfect for. He never received the services they offered, which were PT, OT, Speech and Psych. He only received PT on a sporadic basis. They mismanaged his Meds for his first two months which we only found out during a med renewal period. They missed hygiene appointments and were late taking him to meals on several occasions. He was moved to another room due to bed bugs and left in confusion alone in the unfamiliar room for hours at a time resulting a face first fall whereby he was hospitalized after suffering a bad black eye and cut to the bridge of his nose. The Aides were completely untrained to handle full care and in fact took video without permission publicly ridiculing and chastising him. Our Dad suffered injuries, malnourishment and setbacks, which was devastating for our family. No one there took accountability. Instead they pressed us to get him out, which we were looking to and finally able to do. Unless they truly dedicate themselves to being nothing but a sales job, your cared one will be at risk there both in health and economically.

My mother had many happy years at the Esplanade at Palisades, with quality, conscientious care…read more  Then, on October 28, 2020, at the height of the pandemic, I believe the Esplanade staff exposed her to COVID by conducting a social event that involved removing her mask.  That is, a wine tasting, (though a conflicting report describes it as a tea party). I believe the staff acted just as irresponsibly again on October 31, when she attended Jewish services there that allowed congregants to remove their masks to pray. Multiple residents who took part in these two gatherings contracted COVID, including seven who died - one of whom was my mother. My brothers and I hold the management of the Esplanade responsible for these tragedies by being carelessly risky. Fox trail was recommended to me by a Social Worker named Blossom at CareOne in Cresskill after my father spent a stint there due to his disease. This place has been a godsend. They provided excellent service through a staff that are caring compassionate and provide overall excellent care. They took care of all his needs including meals, feeding, and bathing, and they do it with such grace. I finally was able to relax and know that he was ok. All I had to do is spend time with him after he was there. He was a decorated Korean War veteran and at 91 years of age they showed him the respect that he deserved as he reached the end of his life. He lived a long and productive life and raised three children with the utmost respect and much love. Thank you Nicola and all the wonderful staff at Fox Trail Memory Care.
