Deeply Concerning Experience at The Phoenix Memory Care Unit, Willow Towers My mother, who is in the late stage of Alzheimer's disease, was moved into The Phoenix Memory Care Unit at Willow Towers Assisted Living. Unfortunately, my experience there was deeply distressing and alarming from the very first day. The day after my mother moved in, I witnessed multiple residents yelling in distress. One male resident became upset and used inappropriate language, to which a care aide responded by screaming at him, also using profanity, and repeatedly yelling "SIT DOWN!" This outburst was extremely upsetting, and no other staff intervened to calm the situation or support the resident. When I asked the Care Manager if this behavior was normal, she apologetically said, "Yes." I knew then that I had made a mistake in bringing my mother there. Throughout the next two weeks, my concerns only grew. The environment on the third floor (The Phoenix unit) was consistently chaotic. The staff rarely smiled or interacted warmly with residents, and the level of care was heartbreaking to witness. My mother, who walked regularly before moving in, was kept in a wheelchair all day and even lifted by her pants seat when taken to the bathroom--causing her distress. I frequently found her in soiled diapers, and her personal cleanliness and comfort were neglected. The activity area was unbearably hot--often near 90-100 degrees--and residents were mostly left sitting around with the TV as their only stimulation. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My mother also developed a bruise on her arm while staying there, and when I expressed concern and asked staff to handle her more gently, I was met with defensiveness rather than compassion.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The facility appeared unclean--on one visit, I witnessed a large cockroach crawl into my mother's room and nearly onto her. Days later, another dead roach and even dried human feces were found under her bed. To make matters worse, I noticed my mother wearing someone else's bra and missing her prescribed dementia medication patch. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Communication with management was consistently challenging. The Director of the Memory Care Unit, Micki Buchanan, often became irritated or dismissive when I raised concerns.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Even more serious, when I reviewed my mother's medical records before discharge, I discovered that she had been denied 11 of her 13 prescribed medications during her 30-day stay--and was administered Lorazepam (a controlled substance) that she was never supposed to receive. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Despite repeated written and verbal requests, I was ignored for nearly two weeks before receiving her full medication record.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Management has never explained what happened to the missing controlled medication. I have since moved my mother to another memory care facility with an enhanced license that provides truly compassionate, peaceful, and safe care--a stark contrast to what we experienced at Willow Towers. My heart breaks for the residents who remain there. If your loved one resides in The Phoenix at Willow Towers, please monitor their medication, health, and emotional well-being closely. Every resident deserves safety, dignity, and respect. If you witness questionable care or violations, I strongly urge you to report your concerns to the Department of Health so that they can investigate. read more

I would like to shout out the memory care unit and their director, Micki Buchanan, for allowing me the privilege of a photo shoot for Women's History month. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Micki asked me to come and have a fun photo shoot with the residents.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The care managers assisted the residents with hair and makeup, they made sure they all looked their best. The residents posed and laughed with their family members, the care managers, Micki and each other! I just wanted to share our wonderful experience at Willow Towers. My parents moved into Willow Towers in February 2021 after it became clear that they needed more assistance with their daily living but they still wanted to remain independent. Willow Towers is a hidden gem and was a perfect solution for them. [[HIGHLIGHT]]From the minute I contacted Willow Towers we had the most wonderful experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]My parents were welcomed like family and quickly settled in.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The apartments are bright & beautiful and the entire building is very clean and well maintained. The apartments are cleaned each week, garbage collected daily & residents get their laundry done for them too. It was a change to go to the dining room for their meals instead of eating in their apartment but my parents quickly enjoyed the change. They had brought their coffee maker and kettle from their previous apartment and could make coffee or tea whenever they wanted it. They could keep milk and other foods items in the refrigerator in their kitchenette. The dining room is cheery and has lovely cloth table cloths. There is a nice selection of delicious foods to choose from. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The servers are very friendly and will help with whatever you need to make your meal more enjoyable.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My parents looked forward to going downstairs for their meals but on days one of them wasn't feeling well they were able to have food delivered to their room. They do such a lovely job for holidays too. Always beautiful decorations. A calendar of events is delivered to the residents each day and you can be busy all day if that's what you like or not so busy if that's what you prefer. There is a wonder variety of activities available to the residents. There is also a lovely courtyard outside where they can sit in the sun or the shade. There is an onsite doctor and nurses which was a great help to my parents when the time came that getting them to appointments became too difficult for them or they needed assistance. As their needs increased we were able to pay for extra services such as shower assistance, administering their medication, etc. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The staff were all so wonderful to my parents. I don't want to list specific names because I'm afraid I might leave someone out but the entire staff including the administration was just amazing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was a relief to me that I didn't have to worry that perhaps one of them would fall or get ill during the night and not have any assistance. The residents have a pendant and can push a button and someone will be up to them very quickly. It gave me such peace of mind to know someone was always there for them. We lived close by and we would often bring my parents over for dinner. [[HIGHLIGHT]]If my parents forgot to tell the staff that they wouldn't be there for a meal they would call looking for my parents when they didn't show up at their table.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Little things like that took so much worrying off my shoulders. My Dad lived there for about 18 months and my Mom for about 2 1/2 years. At the end of their days they both had hospices services and Willow Towers was amazing with the support they provided us. Some of the staff were nice but overall we found the executive staff to be more interested in their own convenience than in the quality of care they provided to the residents. We were promised compassion and understanding and instead were given the choice of unacceptable care for our parent or the option to find care elsewhere. My dad has been there since November 2018. We are extremely pleased with the entire staff and the level of care my dad has received. There are certainly a plethora of activities available and the rooms are maintained in excellent and spotless condition. I have consistently received feedback and prompt replies to any inquiries. They also encourage family participation in many events. The food quality is excellent as well and there are ample choices for all meals. For a nominal amount we can join dad at any meal. It's all about appearances at Willow Towers. They spent money on new plantings and a really nice sidewalk. Maybe they should have considered hiring more aides (who aren't paid enough in the first place) or having an in-house doctor who cares instead. Get/keep your own personal doctor! You also get the impression that they're there to help. However it can take more than 30 minutes to get assistance - whether it's to be pushed or help in the toilet. read more

Every member of the staff knows your name and are always cooperative and helpful. The dining is excellent. They go out of their way to provide you with meals you like. The activity staff is outstanding and there is always something going on to satisfy any area you are interested in. As an entertainer and musician who has visited literally dozens of facilities in the Tri-State area over the last 17 years. Willow Towers, Willow Gardens and the affiliated United Hebrew are definitely among the best I've ever seen. All three offer exceptional care to seniors' diverse needs. The assisted living wing offers a rich living experience in a warm and abundant setting with a staff that cares. They create a full array of programs for the seniors with wonderful recreational activities, which I see leading to a lot of camaraderie and closeness among the residents. The 3rd floor Phoenix program cares for those with memory challenges. Their staff provides some of the best care I've ever seen to residents in need of those services. All in all Willow Towers, Willow Gardens and United Hebrew are simply top notch. read more

I have been at Willow towers as a resident for nine months. My only complaint is that I have gained 7 pounds because the chef is very creative. I have been able to lose 4 of those pounds by making my self do so. I am glad there are two programs at one time, so one has a choice, but if there is a fitness or an exercise program I take it even if I prefer the other. The exercise programs are great. I have also taken advantage of the theatre, The Westchester Broadway theatre, which includes lunch. I do not know of any other place that allows wheelchairs and walkers to visit and have lunch and see theatre. The bus has an entry level, and so people in wheelchairs and walkers can attend. I also try to take advantage of lunch out, and the restaurants that are chosen are excellent. I went to Maria's restaurant in New Rochelle, and it was terrific and recommend it. I think I have adapted very well, and I try to introduce myself to new people with one word of advice, "participate and don't stay in your room." This way, you meet people, and you get to know them, and they get to know you. I also feel that 98% of the personnel are always smiling. I think when they hire people they impress that upon them. A weekly visit to CVS is beneficial, Willow Towers goes there weekly, and we help the economy and fill up with what we need at the same time. read more

I have been bringing families with young children to weekly Music Together classes at Willow Towers for over ten years. The residents, who are lively, warm and friendly, participate with us in the classes and look forward to the visits from the children. The staff is caring and professional. The building is kept very clean and pleasant. The families who attend the classes love to come to Willow Towers! my mother moved into willow towers last year. after having lived alone for almost a year after my father passed away, she was very happy to move to a warm and busy place, filled with people like her, older people who want to remain active. she thrives in this environment, participating in the huge offering of activities, especially exercise classes and concerts. she loves the personnel (she swears that they only hire people who smile all the time), the food, the field trips, and the sense of community. now that the weather has warmed up, she's enjoying sitting outside in the beautifully landscaped courtyard. i appreciate that the staff has been extremely responsive, available and accommodating. i got called one day when she fell, i appreciate that someone contacted me and suggested that it was time for physical therapy and a cane. i love that medical care is available (a nurse is there 24/7), including an internist 2 days/week, as well as several specialists (ophthalmologist, optometrist, dentist, audiologist, podiatrist, dermatologist, psychiatrist, and psychologist)... and a hairdresser and barber, too. all of this makes it extremely convenient for my mom to be active and comfortable, without her working children having to take off from work to take her to many of these appointments. i feel more relaxed knowing that she's in a wonderful facility, keeping busy and happy, the way she would like to live, with good access to care and activities. read more
