We've been customers of the Kettle Dinner for at least 12 years and have always had a pleasant experience until today (09-06-2024). I was one of several pickup customers that arrived within 15 minutes of each other. The young lady Cheryl was very pleasant and doing her absolute best to accommodate us. Because of her caring demeanor, nobody was inpatient or upset, she was doing an excellent job! We were all smiles! Until....Miss Liza, the manager made her dismal appearance. It was as if a dark cloud dissented over our sweet spot at the front door. She never offered a smile to any of us waiting, made no attempt at conversation or an acknowledgment or kind reply when a customer actually complimented her headband, she absolutely cast a gloom over the whole situation between the few of us that were still waiting. Once this happened, I watched her interaction with the staff, there was no difference, no encouragement, kindness, or gratitude towards them at all. These ladies were hustling and with a smile, mind you! I realize that prices have had to react to rising inflation, you had a host of seniors who were paying $30 to $60 for orders within the 20 minutes that I was there. The very least a manager could do is to show appreciation to those that still patronize The Kettle instead of choosing a less expensive site. There were elderly and probably widowed customers who made attempts to speak with Miss Liza to no avail. These simple, short, and sweet interactions could possibly be the only conversations that the elderly clientele have throughout their day and it'd be nice if the "leader" would demonstrate the same upbeat and respectful attitude I saw the wait staff pay towards their senior regulars. I actually left after getting our order with a mixture of feelings, unsure why there was someone with no interpersonal skills managing a staff who were doing their best, angry at the blatant and total lack of response to a kind remark from a customer, and overall shocked at why someone would have a person who clearly didn't enjoy her role as a representative of these hard-working wait staff at this well-respected diner. My family is involved in the restaurant business that's not local, I recognize poor leadership. You must do better, there was absolutely no excuse for her behavior today. read more

Locals love this place, and it's good if you are craving diner food in a casual art-deco spot. They have plenty of choices. The menu and everything would remind you of Waffle House. It's busy, so don't expect top-notch service. Pretend you're eating at your cousin's house. They'll dump a generous pile of sugar packets and creamers on your table to help out the basic coffee. Then, they'll give you a plastic basket of ketchup packets, syrup cups, S&P, etc. The pancakes are fine, good, nothing special. I guess that's true for just about everything there. The fried pork chops are nice if they don't overcook them. With limited breakfast options in Jacksonville that aren't chain restaurants or coffee shops, this'll do just fine. Came here on a recommendation from a friend. Decided to check it out for some breakfast and was very pleased with the outcome. Showed up and the place had a little bit of a wait, but most good places usually do. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Sat down and I decided to order the Dixie deuces since I was in the mood for some biscuits and gravy. The food came out and it was very tasteful. The biscuits were nice and soft, Vegas and sausage well prepared. Needless to say, I definitely enjoyed my breakfast at the kettle diner. Decent parking out front and very easy to find. My fellow Carolinian Yelpers wrote reviews of high praise about The Kettle so, I had to take a chance and try it for myself. It was definitely worth every bite. Normally my mom cooks us breakfast when we Visit Jacksonville, however, she had a busy morning and decided to treat us to breakfast. I suggested the Kettle after conducting thorough yelp research. The parking lot of the diner was starting to fill up at 9:30. We got in during a slower hour and were able to score a booth near the window and kitchen. Our waitress was very pleasant and took our drink orders before our butts hit the seat. I decided on the vegetarian omelet with hash browns and Texas toast. Everything was perfect. My daughter had the children's silver dollar pancakes, bacon and cheesey eggs. The silver dollars came with the cutest Mickey Mouse shaped silver dollar. My mom didn't enjoy the coffee, so they lost a star there because it was instant. I definitely loved the variety offered on the menu. Something for everyone ! I love the clean and modern decor here. Almost every time we go to see our son at Camp Lejeune we stop here and eat. Nice atmosphere. Good food.

9 folks in our party got right in the door because they had a large table empty. The service was efficient and pleasant. Everyone from 2 year old to 67 year old gat what they wanted and the tab was still reasonable. To start, I'll give a few bad and end on the good that outweigh the bad. I've been here more than a few times and always got breakfast. Today I decided to go a bit different and ordered the spaghetti with meat balls. To my taste, the pasta was over cooked and the water from it showed in the bottom of the bowl. It took a lot of salt and hot sauce and at best, it tasted like the spaghetti in an MRE. The meat balls seemed hand prepared and weren't bad tasting but I think they are frozen. I don't know for sure. My daughter had the chicken and broccoli Alfredo. She agreed about the noodles and said the rest was pretty tasty. Again, lots of soup at the bottom. The boneless wings were a bit dry and very fatty. The sauce was great for them though. The fried green tomatoes were very good and fried right. Not overly greasy, but could use some more seasoning for our taste. My wife had the omelet and said it was on point. As always, breakfast has never been an issue here. The place is always packed and it can be hard to park at times, but I've never had to wait for a seat or ran into any employee there that wasn't great and would go above and beyond to ensure you were happy. It has always been clean and the atmosphere is just peaceful and welcoming. The food has always come quickly and always hot. I do think their bathrooms could use a remake as many of the tiles are cracked. Now with all this said, I may have had one not so great meal here, but it won't stop me from going again and again. Order the sweet potato fries, fully loaded. You won't be disappointed. Also, the club sandwiches are perfect. Sometimes, restaurants serve them with the toast so hard it tears up the roof of your mouth, but here the toast is absolutely perfect. The employees and kitchen staff specially packed my order for heating up later. The food was delicious BUT: I was directed to wait for my order between two people sitting at the counter with less than 18" between us. While I was waiting I had a chance to watch the staff: One waitress wore her mask the entire time, the other 7 either wore their face masks around their necks, hanging on one ear or on their wrist. Had a guest visiting and they wanted to go out for breakfast. I'm not really a breakfast person, so I didn't know much places. I turned to yelp and it brought me here -- The Kettle Diner. It was very busy when we went, so parking was kinda hard. There are limited parking spaces, so try going during non-busy hours. At least we were seated right away without a wait, which was great. They have tons of tables and seats here. Since I'm not a breakfast person, I was able to order off the lunch menu (YAY!) I ordered the chicken fried steak just because I haven't had it in such a long time. It came with mash potatoes, green beans, and those corn hush puppies. Everything was just okays. Chicken fried steak was soggy from the gravy, but had good flavors. The mash potatoes trashed like instant mash and green beans tasted like it was from the can -- but tasted okays. They have so much better variety than any other restaurant so everyone will find something they like. (Yes even that picky one in your family. You know which one I'm talking about. Yep, them.) If it's on their menu it's going to be delicious so definitely change it up. No stale menus here either, they buy local fresh ingredients and and change their specials constantly. I want to eat fresh food that's in season and there specials are always my favorite. The seafood is my favorite in town but they only buy it when it's fresh so when they have it order it. I love the grilled shrimp. They are huge! None of that popcorn stuff here and the flavor is great. Fried Chicken is another special that I would take over any Fried Chicken place in town. I love their French Toast, their Pork Chops, their Chicken Tenders, and the list gos on honestly.
