So while my never-ending battle to get my beers counted in real-time still remains the bane of my ubiquitous existence here, at least the staff make it a little less maddening. To be fair sometimes it is tech issues where the app (which I have a neverending love/hate relationship with) will decide to do some new, weird, baffling yet enraging thing that mucks up my beer count, but I can always count on my Ladies in Charge Izz & Kels to work their magic. I also gotta give shoutouts to my girls Maddie & Stella & Katie for always taking care of me and finding ways to turn my frowns upside down! I have enjoyed the different styles and breweries they have recently been bringing into the mix (I thought I had died and gone to beer heaven when I saw they had 6 yes SIX 3 Floyds beers on tap & in cans!), but have noticed they haven't been adding as many local NC beers like they used to, which makes it hard for a regular, such as myself, on her 17th plate to come in for $5 NC Drafts on Sundays. I appreciate the new daily specials on Fridays/Saturdays and showing more appreciation for BeerKnurds that have been added (notably 1/2 lunch for BKs on Tues from 11am-3pm), but REALLY REALLY wish they would do more stuff (as in ANYTHING) for MOUs (BKs w/5+ plates). All that being said, you really can't beat their $5 off any draft on the wall or hard liquors + wine Mondays or their create your own pizzas (might I suggest my personal creation & fav the "Tickle My Pickle?); the food menu is just solid as their kitchen staff are some of the best (and nicest) in the biz! So, if you're looking for a spot where the staff make the experience just as much as the beer & food and that is the literal embodiment of Cheers once you've established yourself as a regular, then look no further! Come for the great beer shirts/hats + collectible glassware and stay for the beer/booze, food, and people...until next year!

A fun, character-filled beer spot, but the food didn't quite live up to the experience…read more I met up with family at The Flying Saucer in the University area. It's seat-yourself, so we had to pull a couple tables together to fit everyone. One thing to note: it was very warm inside, so I'd recommend sitting toward the back where it's more comfortable. My boys really enjoy this place, so I wanted to like it more, but the food was just okay and a bit pricey for what you get. Most items run about $14.99-$21.99, even appetizers are at entrée prices. I ordered the Carne Asada Fries appetizer ($15.99) after hearing they were "fire." The steak had good flavor, but the portion was light--fine for sharing, but not very filling. One entree, Big Dipper ($15.49), a roast beef seemed overcooked and there wasn't much meat on a large bun. Two people from the table ordered pizza. Neither ate more than 2 pieces. On the positive side, the beer selection is excellent, with plenty of options on tap and in bottles and cans--from Guinness to local IPAs. The atmosphere is also unique: plates cover the walls and ceiling from guests who've completed their beer challenge, which makes for a fun, quirky vibe you really have to see in person. Dart boards for those who want to be a bit more active. Overall, it's a great spot for beer and atmosphere, but the food and pricing didn't quite match the experience for me.

We decided on the their appetizer sampler just to get a feel for their food, and it wasn't a great feel. The wings were burnt, Maybe that's their "style" but it didn't work. They were so dry. The shrooms had too much breading and were also overcooked, thought at least not burnt. The mozzarella sticks were actually decent. The pretzels was good, but some awful beer cheese. I had two of their IPA's and I did enjoy those. Unfortunately not someplace I'd go back to unless someone assured me it was better

Indeed, if the cold North runs through you veins, you'll find house beer and mead aplenty to wet your whistle in an atmosphere that while housed in a modern shopping center, is still somehow appropos. Unfortunately, I had driving to do, so alcohol wasn't in the cards, but the menu appealed to us. We needed some comfort food, so we ended up with an appetizer sampler that included a baked pretzel, jalapeno poppers (instead of the fried ravioli that I guess they were out of), buffalo wings, and mozz sticks. We also got a pizza from the current specials, the spicy hawaiin. We like pineapple on pizza, and definitely prefer pepperoni to ham, and this also included jalapenos... so it sounded right up our alley. FYI, there are no waiters, you simply order at the bar, and they give you a numbered buzzer to pick up your food when ready. I greatly prefer this way of doing things honestly. For the food, honestly... a mixed bag, hence the one star off. The pretzel was great, probably the best of the bunch. Jalapeno poppers were nice and large, good flavor balance of cream cheese and jalapeno. Mozz sticks were mozz sticks. We didn't care for the wings. For one, they weren't tossed in the buffalo sauce, it was just poured over the top, and they also were a tad dry... maybe fried too long. The pizza was a letdown, especially since other reviews were so complimentary of it. The slices were very floppy, it maybe could have used a couple minutes more. The cheese had a nice flavor, but the sauce was not either of our preference. Could have used more pineapple, less jalapeno to balance the bites. Overall, we didn't finish it, and didn't take the leftovers for later. It could just be our personal tastes, so go and decide for yourself. Outside of food, it was trivia night, and people were having a great time. We would have taken part if we were staying longer. I think if I lived in the area, I would still come here, and just figure out what food items are the ones to get and which ones aren't. Great atmosphere, friendly bartender and people.

Before we even arrived to the restaurant, we had a wonderful time walking through 4th Ward and admiring the beautiful houses. Alexander Michael's is located in a house that is equal parts beautiful and characterful. Upon entrance, I felt welcomed by the moody lighting, decorations, and cleanliness of the establishment. The waitress and bartender both greeted us. There is plenty of memorabilia, photos, and other keepsakes to gaze at throughout the restaurant. I had seen a lot about their spicy crab soup so I knew I had to start out with a bowl of it. The bowl came out quickly and enough cannot be said about how delicious it was. Perfect level of spice, consistency, and a flavor that would rival a seafood restaurant closer to the water. After this, I decided to eat their special, a Meatloaf Sandwich. Not my first choice, but after the waitress explained the dish and communicated how delicious it was, I knew I had to try it. I also opted for a side of their Cajun Fries which I have seen a lot of people rave about. The food came out after about 10 minutes. The presentation was beautiful for one, but there was also just a melodic rhythm felt throughout the dish from the cut of the sandwich to the layer of seasoning on the fries. I don't think I have ever seen "pub food" so beautifully prepared before. The sandwich was incredibly and as were the fries. I feel like I could ramble on and on about how incredible of a restaurant this is. From the kind and personable staff, to the wonderful vibes radiating from the place that foster conversation and good times. I understand why this place has stayed in business for so long. You won't be disappointed trying out this restaurant which is a wonderful representation of Charlotte and its culture.
