I visited The Kitchen - Upstairs tonight for the first time and absolutely will be back! Abigail made sitting at the bar an awesome experience - from making us feel totally well-cared for to amazing cocktails and advising us on food items. Abigail was top notch! We loved the spicy Broccolini and Delicata Squash with a kick but the main courses left us absolutely wowed! I had the roasted chicken and my GF ordered the hanger steak. Every single time we are there they are playing trance, house, or techno music at volumes that you can't hear yourself think or even your waiter. When we ask the staff to please turn it down or switch it to something else we've been told every time that they have a 'corporate playlist'. One time we were told that the music and volume was controlled by corporate and couldn't be adjusted on site another that they couldn't change the music but would try and see if it could be turned down atleast because apparently the staff couldn't hear the customers either. If this were a bar or a music venue it would be fine and expected but this is elevated dining with a similarly elevated price tag. Their food is also inconsistent. We had one of the best meals ever in Boulder there on Sunday but the previous visit was deeply disappointing. However, despite inconsistency, we find ourselves going else where just to avoid the migraine inducing music that is totally out of character of the restaurant's 'vibe'. The space is beautiful, the service good, location perfect and food can be exceptional....but the MUSIC! It's so disappointing that something that is typically so trivial and usually goes unnoticed becomes so dominant it ruins the experience. Corporate needs to address this and the inconsistency of the meals. In summary: when the kitchen gets the dishes right you are in for a serious treat. But wear ear plugs to keep your sanity. read more

Horrible selection of wine and champagne only generic looking brands I never heard of and they actually tried to pass off a glass of sparkling wine as champagne I looked up the brand online so what a rip off. So I ordered a bottle of champagne (that i once again confirmed online to make sure it was real) that the waitress recommended only to find out they were out of stock of it on Valentines Day? So they bring out a different bottle of room temp not even chilled and the manager was extremely rude to me like it was my fault I didn't like their sub par non chilled room temperature champagne. Food was not as good as it use to be and took forever to bring out. I will never eat here again. read more

Super friendly, upscale and wonderful menu. We had brunch and ordered a nice crisp Sauvignon Blanc, the Benedict (poached egg, avocado & peekytoe crab cake, jalapeno, lime hollandaise) and the Crispy Cauliflower (carrots, chickpeas, tamarind chutney, cilantro chutney, mango, pickled red onion, herb salad). Everything was amazing! Food, decor, ambiance, service, would definitely recommend The Kitchen if you're in the area! I got a yummy salad ( I forget the name but it had candied nuts, kale, roasted chicken, veggies) and my husband got a spicy Piri Piri chicken sandwich which he loved! Came here for lunch with my colleagues. There were so many choices of restaurants on Pearl Street but we just took a chance on the one. I ordered the chicken sandwich that came with French Fries and some greens. The chicken was grilled and tasted bland. The cole slaw between the buns didn't do it's job to add to the blandness. I did like the ciabatta bread. My colleague ordered the mushroom sandwich. She let me try a little of the mushrooms and pickled greens, I think it was mustard green ??. Looks like a good vegan option minus the cheese. I did like the ambience though. The interior is a mixed of industrial and modern. The noise level wasn't so bad. It wasn't at full capacity though but it wasn't like we had to shout to hear each other. read more

This spot has been around forever and has always been great. I recently went for brunch and really enjoyed it. We started with the sticky bun and I got the shrimp & grits for my main. The sticky bun is amazing but very rich so I recommend sharing. The shrimp & grits came with sausage and were amazing. I could have eaten the grits on their own--that good. I reserved a table for 4 adults at the Kitchen American Bistro recently during a trip to visit my mom And stepdad in Colorado. A few days before we found out that my step brother and his family would be driving in from out of state as well to join us. I tried updating the reservations online but unfortunately a table for 6 wasn't available that day. I called the restaurant and they offered to get us a table for six in their upstairs dining area for 15 fifteen minutes later than our original seating time. It was such a pleasant surprise that they were able to accommodate a short notice change considering how popular the restaurant is. When we got to the restaurant, they opened up their elevator to help my sister in law and her infant make it up to the second floor with the stroller. After getting seated, we were immediately greeted by our server who promptly brought us water and asked for our drink order. Not able to drink right now. I was so happy to find mocktail options on the menu and ordered one of their alcohol free drinks. The food is served family style with tapas sized portions so you'll definitely need at least 2-3 dishes ordered per person since the portions are quite small. Between my mom, stepdad, my husband and I, we shared roughly 8 dishes. All the plates came out expertly crafted, fresh, exquisitely prepared and absolutely delicious. You could tell the quality of the ingredients used and the effort placed in creating these mouthwatering dishes. Our favorites included the fried cauliflower, the carrots, the gnocchi and the linguine with bolognese. All I can about the food was "wow wow wow." The ambience was also elevated and comfy casual at the same time with its dark walls, candle lit tables, fireplace and wrap around 1920s style mahogany bar. Overall we had a pretty fantastic experience at this restaurant. The only thing I'd say is be prepared for smaller portions and pricey food. The dishes aren't cheap, so if you're looking for a gourmet dining experience that's easier on your wallet, this wouldn't be it. However, if you're interested in a memorable scenic dining experience with incredible tasting food and excellent service in Boulder, I'd highly recommend checking the Kitchen out. Pork belly skewers- a little on the drier side. Gulf shrimp hush puppies- barely any shrimp inside Grilled chicken kale salad- a bit small for the price. Chicken was tender but was just on the verge of being under cooked. Vegetarian salad- I enjoyed this more than the kale salad. Not bad but a bit pricey for a small salad. My family dropped into the Kitchen for brunch on a rainy Saturday. We sat outdoors and we're shielded by umbrella from the slight sprinkle. I ordered the double stack cheeseburger, which was one of the best I've ever had. Patties were thin and bread slightly sweet. I strongly recommend ordering the garlic fries- they were delicious! Hubby ordered quiche which was very creamy and for dessert we got the sticky toffee pudding. This was the most divisive among the group- the orange peel is quite overpowering and in our opinion would be much better without. Each time I dine at The Kitchen I am blown away. They just created a new dinner menu, and everything we sampled was phenomenal. The gnocchi was served with a pesto sauce which might be the best pesto I've ever had, and they have put a new spin on several classic dishes, like the roasted chicken (now served with truffle cream sauce!!!) The staff is always so friendly and collaborative and have made the dining experience still so special there, despite current global circumstances. I can't speak highly enough about this restaurant, it is absolutely one of the best dining experiences in Boulder. Next up: trying the new Kitchen Upstairs menu! read more

We didn't have a reservation, so we were seated outside. The skirt steak was tough and stringy, though it had a good flavor. There are ways to prepare skirt steak to make it more tender. Unlike everyone else, this place didn't impress me but I thought it was going to after hearing that it is THE spot in Boulder to go to. It wasn't the minimalist feel of this place or limited menu, the service just wasn't jiving with me when I went. We went here on a Sunday morning and was quite surprised there wasnt a wait with it being Sunday morning and all. Our server would come around every now and then and when I asked for something, she would forget it. No bueno, case and point, one of the things she forgot was coffee......on a Sunday morning.....me without coffee is like a fish out of water. What made it even worse was that the coffee was awesome and I just wanted some more of it and I couldn't even get a quick refill. Even though the service kind of ruined the experience, the coffee and grub was good. I wanted to keep things on the cheap so I ordered the Pecan challah bread French toast (seriously, paying $14 for a brunch dish just seems absolutely ridiculous to me). I am more of a savory kind of gal for breakfast but nothing was really singing to me and it was one of the cheaper options. Even though the experience was average at best I really dig their community iniative but think I will just admire from afar and not be running back anytime soon. read more

Was up in Boulder and ended up squeezing this into our schedule...only to find out there are other ones in Colorado--Fort Collins and in Denver. Had no idea! Will probably try both of those out too to compare. A fellow Yelper informed me with new info that this Boulder location was the first and that I could verify it in their website. Yes indeed this place was the first that opened in 2004. And there are also ones in Chicago and Memphis too. I had the roasted chicken salad which felt very healthy and was very flavorful. I tried one of their breakfast potatoes and enjoyed this warm crunchy on outside but soft in the center delight. The scrambled eggs were more like a generous, folded over egg blanket. It made me wish I ordered them since they were softly cooked--the way I like them. Our waitress just moved here from Santa Cruz Calif. she was pretty funny sharing her comparison of there versus Boulder. Service was spot on even though it seemed we upset the apple cart a bit by asking to sit at a table by the front to enjoy the sunshine. I ended up leaving a bit hungry since the salad didn't really fill me and it was already after their 2:00 close time on Sundays (they re-open again at 5 for dinner). I have been eating here since it opened around 2005, since it was the "only" and "original" of what is now the Kitchen Restaurant Group. I have had a lot of lunches, some brunches and a few dinners. It's still one of the places I can have a really nice lunch with great service and a true farm to table, fresh food, menu, one of the first in Boulder in it's era. It has never failed for me, and the service is the most professional on Pearl that I can think of. I feel I need a few more opportunities at dinner before going for a full 5 star rating, but it is at my price limit for dinners so I don't go too often. But I've been for some special day brunches over the years and I'm not sure I have ever eaten better lemon ricotta pancakes anywhere else from coast to coast. Never undercooked, the blueberry compote on top made with what looks like tiny wild Maine blueberries, such incredible flavor, so much more than the giant berries so common now. (Okay, wild is not a farm but it sure is genuine.) The eggs are always prepared precisely to the doneness I want. Salads are really fresh and unique. Pastries are perfectly baked for me. Juices good. Bacon terrific, though much good bacon can be had in Boulder these days. I always find a nice wine by the glass option. There have been many other meals, hard to remember them all, but today's was so good, I felt my (really) old review sure needed an update. Also, this was the first time I used Yelp Reservations, the process was more user friendly than some other online options I have used, the result flawless. And though The Kitchen always seems quite busy, it is not as loud as some of the new places in town and the tables not as "tightly" spaced either. And again, special recognition for service. Though I love a lot of the new places on Pearl too, I feel we should all remember the "oldies but goodies" (and there are others) that perked this neighborhood up more than a decade ago. read more

When we went to Denver for the weekend, we were told that a trip to Boulder to eat at the Kitchen would be worth it. We kind of wanted to see Boulder anyways and it was kind of on the way to the Georgetown Train we were headed toward, so we decided to go for it.. I think we got lucky because we were seated immediately. Everything on the menu looked amazing... I could eat here 10 times and have something different (and surely wonderful) each time. I opted for the Vegetarian sandwich because I saw one go by on a plate and I was sold. But after ordering I saw a lot of other things go by on a lot of other plates that I wanted also. The sandwish? Delish. I ate the whole thing even though I didn't need to. And I loved the fries.. they were a bit thicker, almost like steak fries, but still seasoned and a bit crispy.
