You come here for the ambiance, not the food. This place has a rustic, homey vibe with a lot of small but interesting sights to explore. There's a museum, the actual winery area, the restaurant, the gift shop, etc. Sitting outside and enjoying the peace over some wine and bites was pleasant--like I entered a different world. We were able to sit anywhere around the winery (and there were quite a few spots across different small shops), and impressively, the waiter managed to find our seat. The food was decent. I was a fan of the cheese selection in the charcuterie board. I didn't try much else. I'll need to return here to give the pizza a go. read more

I've been coming here several times over the past decade and they've stayed pretty consistent. You order at the register then seat yourself. It's all outdoor seating so be aware. They do offer umbrellas and some other shaded areas although the patio by the wine room is 21+. We've had their flat bread, salads, and pasta repeatedly and we've never been disappointed. The service is relatively fast even when it's busy and the servers are always polite. My one complaint is the portions have gotten slightly smaller over the years for the same price. I understand rising costs of ingredients etc, it's just a shame to see. Highly recommend grabbing a bite here if you're in the area and wanting a nice glass of wine to pair with it. read more

We came for some festive cheer at the Bernardo winery and ordered the Calabrese pizza and bolognese rigatoni pasta. You can see the pizza dough being made fresh thru the window and so we were expecting a fresh to made pasta as well but to our disappointment, the pasta was premade and handed to us at the register in a to-go container. Seating is available outside. The pasta was mediocre. There hardly any bolognese sauce and meat. Luckily, the pizza was good! The dough was chewy and some of the crust had a nice outer crunch. The pepperoni was good. I would have to say that the pasta was truly a let down so the overall rating is 3.8. read more

We were a large group of women that came here to celebrate my sister's birthday! We each ordered our own glasses of wine or flights, but shared the food family style. We had also ordered pastas (not pictured) because it came later.We all loved the wine, food and overall experience here. Many of the girls said they would come back to dine here. We came here on a weekend and the service was on the slower end, so our food came at different times instead of all together. After many years of visiting lovely BW we were completely disappointed with the food quality during our last visit there. The salad was weak and warm. Famous bread was not good at all- looks like it wasn't even baked in the outside oven... Definitely quality of food significantly declined lately. There are tables spread across the property. You can order wine and drinks and they have a complimentary water station too. The food was overall fine. I personally think it's a bit overpriced ($16-25 per item) given the food was average tasting, nothing special. The ambiance is beautiful and timeless. It's a hidden gem within the suburb community of Rancho Bernardo. Great picture spots. There are small boutique shops throughout the village including a sweets shop that sells house made gelato and a free museum that tells the story of the city. There is a small parking lot at the start of the village but more parking further up. This place never disappoints. I love coming out here for a relaxing time in their lovely rustic village atmosphere ,away from the hustle and bustle. They've got great Sangrias from the tasting room. Food from the Kitchen is consistently delicious. The staff is friendly and helpful. I called in advance to inquire about reservations. The restaurant doesn't take reservations anymore, however you can order from the Kitchen, sit anywhere you'd like in the Bernardo Winery Village and they will bring you your food. We didn't have a problem finding a table on a Saturday afternoon and service was fast. Come visit the Kitchen and the many shops at the Bernardo Winery Village and see what makes one of the oldest wineries in California so charming and unique! Not sure what to try? Here's a few menu recommendations: Food Rigatoni + Vodka Sauce: Pasta is handmade, in-house and the sauce with lemon ricotta is delicious. Such a delightful little spot - it's a mini village with wine, shops, and food tucked away in the neighborhood. A great place to picnic with a bottle of wine and enjoy the outdoors! I came for my usual rigatoni pasta that I've been craving and tried the wedge salad for the first time. The rigatoni was delicious as always. I wish it came with more ingredients like sausage, onions, and mushrooms but that's ok because the noodles are always cooked perfectly and the vodka sauce is flavorful. What a great restaurant at the Bernardo Winery. It's the perfect place to meet up with friends for lunch before walking around the cute winery and do some shopping in the boutiques on site. There are lots of outdoor tables to choose from and most are shaded. It opens at 11am and it was busy soon after. We went on a weekday too. Living in the area, I have visited Bernardo Winery many times over the years. Unfortunately the three different times I came with my wife and friends to dine at the Kitchen restaurant I always had to turn around and leave to dine elsewhere. I was never able to find seating and they don't offer reservations for parties under 8 people in their gazebo and under 12 people elsewhere in the restaurant. They used to take reservations during covid which really needs to be brought back. I hope things change because I would really like to try their food. read more

Went for lunch but found that it is now catering for its Christmas evening events and so was limited menu and served in take away fashion ie. plastic boxes, paper plates and plastic 'silverware'. Have to order at counter, and either collect pizza at the pizza area or are handed microwaved warmed up food. My vodka rigatoni was dry and husband's minestrone soup the worst he has every had. Then you find your table - today there was hardly anyone there. They still have a screen which asks for a tip ! Really? The food is good and the location is interesting and fun to walk around and browse shops and such. I can get busy with wine drinkers in the evening, and the parking lot can be a bit tight depending on the event schedule. I'd recommend visiting around holidays for a seasonal vibe. read more

It is always summer at the Rancho Bernardo winery, so beautiful and always pleasant. So when I have visitors from abroad I always suggest going there. The Kitchen is new to me and attractive to them since they wanted to share pizzas. I like how you can bring your own picnic gear and no one bothers you for creating your own magic. However, I miss whatever restaurant was there before with more food choices and I don't remember you paying first and then you are served at the table. This place is awful. Walked in to the empty restaurant and was just stared at. I had to ask if we seat ourselves, they said yes. We did and waited. No where does it say you have to order inside. Yelp says "waiter service" the lady didn't even tell me. Anyways you have to order your own wine at the tasting room then order inside the restaurant for your food. Our initial experience was five stars. The food was great, the ambience was nice, it was a great place to have a date. The next couple times we returned was just not good. They changed up their menu and removed a bunch of things and what we did get seems like the portion size was smaller and just didn't taste as good. The duck tasted old, seemed boiled and not seared. The sauce had zero flavor, seasoning or bite. It just tasted like dish water. The "freshly made pasta" was not good. Sent the dish back. Decided to try the other foods we ordered. The pizza was mostly dry, hard crust. Very light on cheese. The sea bass was just seared sea bass with zero flavor profile.
