I really wanted to give The Kitchen a fair shot, but this place lost me before I could even order. When my wife and I walked in, the vibe was already a little off, but I tried to brush it aside. The host (a bald guy at the stand) didn't acknowledge us for a solid five minutes because he was too busy entering what looked like employee info into the computer. Not exactly the best first impression. When he finally decided to acknowledge us, he said, "Alright guys, follow me," and started walking straight toward the kitchen. Naturally, we followed -- only for him to literally laugh in our faces in front of the whole restaurant and say, "Nooo, not through the kitchen," as if we were supposed to magically know the layout of a restaurant we'd never been to. (Plenty of restaurants do walk guests through the kitchen -- Bucca di Beppo, for example.) If he didn't want confusion, he could have just walked the way he expected us to go instead of setting us up for embarrassment. To top it off, he acted annoyed that we weren't keeping up with his rushed, speed-walk pace to the table. At that point, we were over it. We sat down for maybe 30 seconds, looked at each other, and decided to leave. Ended up going to Café Melissa's instead -- much better choice. Oh, and by the way, they're still charging an extra $1 on every menu item that includes eggs... which makes zero sense considering egg prices didn't even spike much and have already gone back down. Bottom line: rude service, unwelcoming atmosphere, and nickel-and-dime menu pricing. I wanted to give this place a chance, but The Kitchen blew it before I even had the chance to try the food. Stopped in on Sunday about 30 minutes before they closed. We realized this upon entering the restaurant and asked if it was too late to order food. The two young men working in the dining room gladly sat us, letting us know they close the kitchen at 2pm. We quickly ordered as we didn't want to inconvenience the staff by lingering. I believe our servers name was Ryan, who was very polite and informative. He also told us we had come at a good time for the first time, as they were very busy earlier. Because I have a dairy allergy, I am always super excited to see options on a menu that I can enjoy a meal without picking it apart. The Kitchen has vegan "plate cakes", which I gladly ordered with bananas and blueberries in them. I also ordered a side of the vegan sausage. The pancakes were delicious! So filling and really good for being a vegan dish...I was pleasantly surprised. I ended up bringing half of my pancakes home to enjoy the next morning. I also tried the agave cream soda, which was pretty tasty. And even though we visited right before closing time, our service was great. Ryan was attentive and accommodating. And for a future visit, after seeing how delicious the BLTA sandwich looked, I plan on getting that next time without butter to make it dairy free. So I ordered the meal "the breakfast " and when it came out it looked great, tasted amazing!! Only bad part was there was 3 pieces of hair that was in my eggs. It took a while to grab her attention but When I did grab her attention I told her about how I found hair in my eggs and she's going to proceed to say " that's my sister that's cooking the food she never leaves hair " and got really defensive about it. This was today, 11/19/23 at 10:10 AM. I would leave ZERO stars if I could. We have had only two good experiences out of the five chances we gave this place. The last time my husband and I were there and seated at the counter (this was before the new wall was put up), the cooks were dropping the F bomb loudly and the restaurant was full of families with small children. We were very turned off even though we both drop it like it's hot -- but in appropriate environments. That was probably two years ago. After reading a couple of positive posts on FB, we decided to give it another try. My husband and I walked in and the woman at the hostess stand said "there are no tables available, you'll have to wait, it's about 30 minutes". I asked if she would take our name and she said they didn't do that and that we'd have to come back. Come back? No wait list? It didn't make sense. Then I asked her if we could sit at the counter and she said there were not two seats available. We walked over there and found two seats at the corner of the bar and sat down. Bar/Counter seats are typically "first come first serve". And note, there were many two tops available and at least one four top on the side of the restaurant. We emphasize that businesses are short staffed and overwhelmed at times and we understand waiting for service (within reason). At first there were three people standing by the hostess stand and they left. There were no other people waiting. After we sat down, I went back to the hostess stand where a different woman was on the computer and I asked if I could have two menus. She said "there's a wait" and I replied "I know, but can we just look at the menus while we wait?" She said she was a cook and slapped two menus down and as I walked away, she said "whatever floats your boat". I turned around and asked why she was speaking to me that way. She replied that she heard that we were told there was a wait and "you helped yourselves anyway". I said that the original employee told us that there weren't two seats at the counter and we found two together. She proceeded to be argumentative and I returned to my husband and we decided to leave. On our way out, the cook yells from the kitchen loudly, "I'm just a cook!" Even if their policy was that the counter had to be seated by the hostess, this treatment was extremely unprofessional and unnecessary. The first employee was not clear and the second employee didn't need to be rude and could have calmly said "you actually need to be seated at the counter, so just know it could take a while for someone to get to you" or something to that effect. We will never, ever go there again. We proceeded to go to Cafe Melissa's and we were still flustered about what had just happened and told our server. She in turn went to her fellow employees and told them. They relayed horror stories they had heard from customers who also walked out. Word travels fast in this small town. We had an EXCELLENT breakfast at Melissa's with the BEST service. We were in and out of there within the hour and they were very busy. Team work was very apparent and everyone was extremely pleasant. I'm going to write a five star review for Melissa's after posting this. We always want to support local, but we will not support The Kitchen. read more

Three of us stopped in for breakfast, mainly because one of us has GF requirements and we heard this place offered lots of options. Mid morning and not very busy so we figured we could get in and out quickly. It was a nice day so we opted for outside seating. Most of the tables and chairs were in need of cleaning due to bird leavings, so we found the least contaminated table and grabbed the cleanest chairs from other spots. When we ordered, I asked for iced tea and was informed that they don't have it. The person in our party with celiac wanted a cheese omelette but was told they weren't gluten free. Then he decided OK, I'll have the (listed on the menu) gluten free waffles and was told they don't have those any more. Eventually it turned out that his only option was for GF pancakes and sausage with fruit. Although the place wasn't busy it was 30 minutes before we got the first of our food. Two orders were complete, but one was just the pancakes. No fruit or sausage. Part of my breakfast was "homemade biscuits" which had clearly just been freed from a cardboard tube. Any time the server was near she would assure us that the rest of the food was coming shortly. After 20 minutes she brought out some seriously unappetizing looking sausage and the fruit was still nowhere to be found. We let her know that we were done and she took the sausage off the bill. read more

Never had someone stop back to check on the food. Rarely saw the waitress (the one with the Serenity tattoo). We could overhear people at other tables complaining about the experience. Watched some poor guy get his food and be told his toast "would be right out." More than 20 minutes later he still didn't have toast. He still didn't have it when we left. Saw another guy at the counter throw his arms up in exasperation after getting ignored by the waitress. One table stood up and put their coats on to get the waitresses attention to get their check. I've always been greeted immediately and had a cup of coffee in hand within minutes. The prices are absolutely reasonable and the portions are more than adequate. Don't believe any negative reviews on here that you read. I'm sure this place will soon become an Avon Lake staple. If you're a vegan or anyone else who has dietary restrictions, please consider that you're in the minority and they definitely are catering to you. We waited over an hour and a half after getting the wrong food for food that was never coming. After the first hour mark the wait staff was clearly avoiding us, and eventually just asked us if we really still wanted it. Instead of asking if we wanted something other than what we ordered? We left and went to bdubs next door and got food within twenty minutes! My first time there and unfortunately I won't be coming back. We got a hash skillet (big and delicious), red velvet pancake (play size pancake that could have passed as cake!), and the chocolate quinoa bowl (interesting). Total with tip was $30. I would definitely order the hash again. It looked like large skillet of chopped French fries, onions, shredded ham, and two over easy eggs - Yum! The red velvet pancake was basically dessert- moist with strawberries on top. The quinoa bowl was okay, it had fruit and chocolate syrup - we had heard good things but probably just not for us. I want to love this place. The food is amazing. I have tried several menu items including the corned beef hash, biscuits and gravy, BLT, French toast and pancakes. The pancakes were some of the best I have ever had. But the service.... the service is terrible. Young kids who really don't have a clue what they are doing. They try hard but they appear to have never been trained in any way. You will wait to get a menu, to get a drink, to get a refill and the longest wait will be the food.
