The vibe here is super chill with counter seating and comfy 1/2 booth seating. and local art for sale on the walls. Staff is wonderful! Attentive and full of Aloha spirit. Food is onolicious and made freseakfast, the Biscuits & Gravy and the Loco Moco are hands-down crowd favorites. The Eggs Benedict is another winner. They've got lunch and dinner options too, so it's not just a breakfast spot. But the bakery is what seals the deal -- pastries, fresh-baked goods, and their $5 loaves of wheat or white bread are a must-try. Hard to beat that kind of value and freshness in Puna. Finally had time to stop in and try this out - it was very good! They have breakfast all day so that's what I did - everything was yummy! They were out of hashbrowns at 2 pm, but replaced them with fries - which were great! The toast made with home made bread was bomb! Jamie also really enjoyed his ham and Brie sandwich. Today was the grand opening of The Kitchen Witch & Bakery. The vibe was pretty energetic and the staff was working hard! There's a couple tables and even a counter you can eat at. Reminds me of an old school dinner the way it's set up but with a modern decor. I ordered take out today, biscuits and gravy ($16) with a side of hash-browns ($5). The server at the counter was super sweet and helpful. There was another server who was asking the server helping me for menus and when she didn't get them for her she yelled thanks in a sarcastic manner which was off putting for me as that server was helping me at the time. Ok so the food... the biscuits were golden and good. The fruit that comes with it was nice and ripe. The hash browns were not it though & neither was the gravy. The gravy needed flavor. It was pretty bland and the hash-browns needed to be cooked more. There are some kinks to work out but I'm hopeful it will become better with time. I would like to go back and try some desserts one day. read more

We wanted to love this little new(ish) restaurant, but alas, we did not. I wish I'd ordered something different, but who knew the chicken of the Chicken & Waffle dish would have bones in it??? I've ordered this dish all over this country and I've never had to deal with bones for breakfast/brunch. I realize this sounds spoiled, but seriously?? The waffle wasn't great either. It came out after a REALLY long wait, with 2 gigantic, overly done, way overcooked pieces of chicken on top. After cutting into it and discovering we had to pick around tons of bones, it was just super annoying to say the least. Chicken and waffles shouldn't have bones. Cute eatery in Puna Kai Shopping Center with a simple menu. Stopped by to get breakfast. Bacon was too hard. Nothing that can't be adjusted in the back of house. The "Joe's Scramble" was scarce on the ground beef. We locals need more meat in there. Also tried the lilikoi cheesecake....does NOT taste like lilikoi at all. It has a funny sweet taste to it. 1. Expect slow, inattentive service. I have eaten here 3 times, and each time, the waitress requires 15-20 min between trips to your table. Mind you, it's not a big restaurant, and everyone is in view of the cashier, but the service is just really, really bad. Slow, slow, and INATTENTIVE. 2. Cooked Food is BAD here. I don't mean that to be insulting, but their hamburger was clearly not made of regular (real?) beef or meat, but some kind of "cafeteria food" or "prison food" hamburger patty. Worse than McDonalds by a long shot (and I think Big Macs are pretty good for the money). A revoltingly bad burger, a clear thumbs down. I'll say it again: serving a burger THAT BAD for $15 is an INSULT to customers from the mainland expecting a real meal for that money. Also note the other reviews regarding undercooked chicken and/or pork. 3. Pastries are GOOD, but their selection varies, and the WAIT is very long. Perhaps you want coffee and a pastry, and if so, this spot is much better than the cafe next door. Just expect to wait 15 minutes, the first 5-6 of which will be waitresses ignoring you The Kitchen Witch must not have gone to culinary school, and she knows nothing about service (or even restaurant culture), but she sure can bake. read more

Two bad reviews in one: 1. First time I went here, I had their burger + fries lunch, and ordered a side salad, about $23. VERY salty burger, distasteful: it felt like it was in a shipping container for weeks, heavily preserved in brine. Perhaps it was made of pork. Service was very slow, and while the waitress was nice, I noticed that it's the same lady who works at the gas station down the street: the same lady who shampoos the local pigs in the parking lot. Hey, I am not going to 2. Second time I went here, the cook/owner (the real "Kitchen Witch"?) accused me of racism and made me and my 6 year old son leave. For context: we had mentioned to the waitress that she had completely ignored us while we sat at the table. For well over 20 minutes, no one came near our table: we only had a slice of pie, and no water was served to us since entering the restaurant. After the waitress came back, our original order (French Toast) was TAKEN at the table and then MYSTERIOUSLY NOT ORDERED. That's a pretty rotten thing to do with a child waiting, but the waitress did her thing: "I didn't think you were serious when you ordered it." Clearly the waitress was upset and getting-back-at-us when we asked to be treated like regular customers. And, as is typical now, the owner exhibited anti-white racism at me and my six year old, presumably because we complained about the service. It must be "white-coded" these days to expect regular service at a restaurant, including being served WATER. The owner/cook was clearly hostile towards us, and displayed all the fake PC rhetoric you see with such angry, envious people. Antiwhite racism is very real in Hawaii, and much of it comes from envy. If you're white and over 40, you probably don't care about that. Just know that the food, while sometimes good here, can also be really, really bad. And there's a high chance a waitress working here has just shampooed a bunch of parking lot pigs. read more

The place is darling and we desperately needed another eatery which is why I gave it three chances. The menu is good but the food is mediocre, and the first time they brought my entree out 10 minutes before my friend's. Mine was cold by the time she got hers. And ribs without bones? The second time I ordered French toast and requested no sugar or cinnamon. When I nicely informed the waitress that there was cinnamon on it, she snarkly replied, " Well that's how French toast is made," and just stood there. I waited her out until she finally asked if I wanted something else. I was over it so I just ordered a croissant (which was delicious). She was unpleasant for the duration. Yesterday I visited Kitchen Witch for the first time. On the way in I asked a departing customer, "How was it?" The response: "Very Good". I sat down at a table. The waitress was very friendly and the service prompt. I ordered the turkey/cheese sandwich. It was good, but next time I'll ask them not to shred the lettuce (it fell out with every bite). Most importantly for me, a Senior Citizen..."Do you give senior discounts?" The response, "Yes, 10%"...wow, I've found a new place to eat regularly. The menu here is pretty expensive. It was new, thought we'd give it a try. The endless summer salad sounded good. When we got it (take out) it was very underwhelming. Small for a $15 salad. Most of the toppings were sad, 1 thin slice of tomato cut into 4 pieces, not even a whole strawberry, there was no goat cheese, the 3 small avocado pieces were over ripe (they were browning, stringy and had hard brown spots on the bottom, even the strawberry had an extra mushy piece). Barely any cranberries or artichoke. The only toppings that were a good amount were the wonton chips, almonds and mushrooms. The mandarin oranges and cucumber were an ok amount. Over all, it tasted fine. Nothing to be impressed about. It looks like a good amount in the picture but once I put some dressing on it and mixed it up it was barely half of the to go container and didn't even reach the top of the container when open (see how much, of the sides, of the container you can see?). Try it for yourself, Maybe they were having a bad day, or the salads just aren't one of their good dishes, who knows but we won't be going here again. read more

My husband and I went to Kitchen Witch for our anniversary. The food I had, the braised pork and kabocha squash was excellent. I'd love the recipe. However, it was my second choice. They were out of my first choice, which was the poke bowl. They were also out of hamburger, which I thought was odd. My husband got a build-a-burger substituted with chicken, which he says was dry. This place is great! I've eaten there twice since it first opened up a couple of weeks ago. The menu is varied, but still manageable - there's plenty of variety, but not so many items that you are overwhelmed. Everything is made fresh to order, and quality is top notch. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner all offer a variety of options, and the breakfast menu is available all day. (Maybe the whole menu all day? But breakfast, for sure.) The coffee is great - rich, smooth local island coffee - Fresh local fruit in the fruit bowl - a nice variety. Fresh local ingredients in the home-made pastries, too - ube, haupia, soursop, pineapple, etc., etc. And did I mention the staff? Everyone was so friendly and attentive, that the first time I went there, I honestly wasn't sure who was my "official" server, because all the staff were so good about checking up on me and making sure everything was just right. And clean! This place is meticulously spotless! And the prices are really reasonable, too. I recommend it to all my friends and plan to take the family back there as soon as I get a chance. read more
