When the packing house finally opened years ago, The Kroft was the first restaurant I tried and came back to several times. Today I went in for lunch, after a pause of about a year, and was disappointed. The prices are either the same or went up because I paid about $14 for the chicken sandwich and a cucumber lemonade but sadly the size of the sandwich is way smaller now. I didn't know they changed this or otherwise I wouldn't have came here. Back in the day, I legit had to save half for dinner because the sandwich was so big. Came to check the Kroft out after seeing all these delicious looking photos from friends. We arrived on a Thursday night and there was already a long line and they were sold out of a lot of things. Ended up ordering the: Country Fried Poutine Fries - delicious, came out piping hot that I burned my tongue trying to devour this because I couldn't wait. lol Porchetta Sandwich - We saw them cutting this crispy meat on the side and asked them where they used it this delicious looking meat.. and got the sandwich! The meat really well seasoned, great sauce and nice crispy, soft bread. Cucumber Mint Lemonade - Wasn't a fan of this. The cucumber flavor was stronger than I would have liked it. Three words: Prime Rib DIP! The line is long. Yes. The prices are a little high. Yes. The food is good. YES. I love a good prime rib and as a dip even better. I got the prime rib dip and it was a great decision. This sandwich had loads of tender, juicy, flavorful prime rib thinly sliced and a slather of horseraddish. The short rib poutines is a pretty unique item - first I've seen of its kind down in the area at least. And it's pretty good! Although, I wish they put a little more short rib in. I've had it twice now and the portions of fries are always greater than everything else. Not necessarily a bad thing I guess if you don't care :) I'd just prefer a little more meat, gravy, onions, and curds. I also tried the prime rib dip which was pretty good but wasn't a stand-out above any other decent roast beef/prime rib dip I've ever had. My wife recently brought home half a chicken sandwich and that was pretty good. I did like the slaw they put inside, but again nothing that really blew me away. Chicken pot pie poutine was literally a cross between a chicken pot pie and poutine. I had not had poutine since Canada, and this did not disappoint. They seem to be known for their poutines. I ordered the braised short rib poutine. Wow! It's a pretty decent portion size. Take into consideration that you're ordering thick-cut fries smothered in savory toppings, so come hungry! You need to eat it quick because as it sits, the fries begin to become soggy. What I really like is the Cucumber Mint Lemonade. You can taste all three! It's fragrant from the cucumber, fresh from the mint, and tangy from the lemonade. The poutine was a good portion, shared amongst 3-4 people, and reasonably priced - it seems like a fairly good approximation of real poutine as the cheese curds were quite rubbery and not like anything I've seen in the US, so presumably came from the Great White North. It's a hard combination to get wrong. Fries were nice and crispy, and soft on the inside. Reasonably priced, particularly for being in a quote-unquote "hip" location. I came here on a Tuesday for lunch and this establishment and Popbar were the only ones that had lines so I figured I would try this place out. My friend and I split a Porchetta sandwich and a Braised Short Rib sandwich. Both were delicious! The Porchetta is their most famous sandwich and comes with tender juicy pork and a sauce similar to pesto but better! The Short Rib sandwich was equally as tasty as the gravy with the meat paired so well with the tanginess of the pickled vegetables and crunchiness of the arugula. And I can't even get started on their bread which had the perfect texture! It kinda reminded me of Ike's Dutch Crunch. For drinks, we each got a Cucumber Mint Lemonade that was really refreshing especially on a hot summer day. I wish I could've tried their poutines because they looked amazing as well but I already was struggling to finish my sandwich. Food was great but knocking off one star because it was on the pricey side. One sandwich and a drink came out to around $14 but I guess you're paying for that hipster environment as well. Of all the good places in this building, I'd say the kroft have the most reasonable prices compared to a lot of the other places. Especially for the portion. I'm mostly talking about the poutine on fries though. I got the short rib poutine for around 9 dollars while a friend of mine got one piece of fish and fries for over 10 bucks somewhere else. so Id say it was a steal to eat here. It was my first time here from SD, and although it personally didn't fully live up to the hype for me, I can't deny that the short rib poutine was super delicious (: I also tried some of the chicken pot pie poutine but I prefer the short rib. So yesterday, I finally got to visit the "hip" and new place in Anaheim, the Packing District. It was definitely a unique atmosphere, the architecture as well as the furniture. Before going to this place, I've went to Eggslut and saw how it was there. Both places are really similar, but Grand Central Market was definitely more compacted. I got to try PopBar as well, you can check out the review over there. Hearing about the Kroft, I've seen various pictures and tags. My friend also really wanted to try this place. I'm not sure if this was considered lucky, but the porchetta was available (of course I got it). I was informed that everything here was organic, which did not make me feel better about my meat since it was still fat. The sandwich was a little salty, I have to say. It was a decent sandwich. I have to commend them for their creativity. I love the asian roasted pig and the idea of them putting it in a sandwich made it phenomenal. All that fat and juice surrounded with a garlic sauce. I ordered the kroft fries as well. It was also very good, since I'm a big fan of garlic. However, it was simply fries with cheese and garlic. Coming down to the three stars, as much as I enjoyed both the sandwich as well as the fries, I don't think it's really worth the price, at least not on a college student's salary. In Portland, majority of the local businesses' ingredients are locally farm fresh. Not here. For some reason, I had this fantasy that everything here in the Packing House would serve farm fresh ingredients on their menus. But my expectations let me down. If Lardo and Potato Champion (both from PDX) had a baby and sent their prodigy child to Anaheim... This place would not be the outcome. In Portland, we have a poutine food cart that serves great poutine with a great serving of gravy and curds (as in each fry is covered in gravy and there's a curd for every bite). Here at the Kroft, they are stingy with the gravy and curds. Is there a shortage that I am not aware of? The fries taste like they are fried from a frozen bag of potatoes as well. And the gravy lacked flavor here and there, as well as seasoning. An item that deserves stars is the porchetta sandwich. However, some of the pork meat was as dry as the Mojave. The different textures of the pork fatty and the cracklings are what nailed this sandwich. The salsa verde was a major factor that balanced the flavors. Another setback would be the ciabatta bread. Perhaps if it was toasted a bit longer, then the Kroft would've at least had one thumb up. Would I come back? Probably not. But it was worth a shot, I guess. read more

Kroft Fried Chicken- Much better than the Porchetta by a mile. Chicken was juicy, well-seasoned, and flavorful. The jalapeño slaw is the money maker for the entire sandwich. Fried Cheese Curds- It's hard to stop eating these. The texture of the exterior is addicting already, but when it contrasts with the gooeyness of the cheese that's when I found myself grabbing another piece because I didn't want the sensation to end. Country Fried Chicken Poutine: This just screams COMFORT at first bite. After a while it starts to feel really heavy, but I mean it's gravy... what do you expect? Braised Short Rib Poutine: If it were an option, I would opt for the cheese curds to be fried instead. i had the short rib poutine ($10). it had fries topped with mushroom gravy, cheese curds, braised short rib and pickled red onion. the fries were the perfect doneness (creamy on the inside, crispy on the outside), the gravy was mushroom-y (and edible! normally i hate gravy), the short rib tender and flavorful, the cheese curds non-descirpt and not squeaky but i found myself not caring because they were melty and hey, 99% of cheese is better when melted. the pickled red onion added a fresh crunch and some acidity to break through everything else. it was super rich though, and i can't imagine eating a whole order by myself. i will be back to try other things! read more

FRIED CHICKEN WITH JALAPENO COLESLAW: was advised that this would be "spicy" but this was the biggest disappointment. The fried chicken itself resembled a Chic Fila chicken patty (which is great) but the originality was lacking. The jalapeno colesaw was not flavorful and tasted very bland. I think I ordered the wrong thing... I went to the Anaheim Packing District with a large group of friends and we all split up to find something to eat then planned on meeting back up to eat together. My fiance and I went to the Kroft with the promise of Poutine. We ordered a Classic Poutine, Porchetta sandwich and a Cucumber Lemonade. Everything tasted fine, but nothing really stood out. The Poutine was probably the best thing we ate of the three items. I was especially impressed with the way the french fries held up throughout the meal; they never got soggy, but the dish did get cold after a little while and once that happened, there was too much gravy to get through. The Porchetta Sandwich was yummy, but a little dry. My favorite part was the cracklins, but overall the sandwich was not as good as it sounded to us and I was disappointed it didn't hold together a little better. I liked the bread a lot, but I always think of Molinari's in San Francisco when I eat a sandwich that falls apart. (They have the good/crazy sense to hollow out the middle of the bread when they make a sandwich so your fillings don't fall out. It seems wasteful but is totally genius!) The lemonade was weird. I am not sure what I thought it was going to taste like because it literally tasted like cucumber and lemonade but I felt that the flavors fought each other rather than complimented each other. The space the restaurant took up was a little cramped and there really wasn't a lot of space to wait for your food without invading the little shop nearby that sold nuts, candy, granola, etc. in bulk). They do give you buzzers but I wasn't sure how far they worked and I was NOT going to miss my food. Overall I plan on going back. I had a good experience, just not a great one. So... freaking... delicious! The prime rib dip was one of the best I've had, and my boyfriend loved the fried chicken sandwich. The prices are a little expensive in relation to the portion sizes, but the sandwiches were filling enough. The young woman working as the cashier was also very patient and helpful. Visited the Anaheim Packing district a few weeks ago with friends and this was the only place to catch my eye. The line was fairly long compared to the other shops, but it moved quickly. Food is good, but customer service is awful. Dark haired woman with the tattoo on her inside right arm is so rude. She really shouldn't be running the front counter. We were at the counter and she clearly was annoyed we didn't know what we wanted. Mind you, there was no one behind us, but she was annoyed anyways. We ordered the katsu curry poutine and a regular french fries. The fries come with a free dipping sauce. She didn't tell us, I had to ask. When she ran through the list of sauces, she rushed through it. I asked her to repeat it and clearly another eye roll. If she had a name tag, I would put her on blast, but she didn't. As for the food... it was good. Fries are a hearty portion and the katsu curry has a bit of a kick to it and a super hearty meal... enough to share if you're trying to make room for dessert. There must be a mayo type of spread on the bread, the beef portion could have been larger, fresh arugula, perfectly melted cheese (not sure what type) on a fresh ciabatta loaf. I liked how the bread was super soft on the inside, but the outside was nice and crispy. PORCHETTA SANDWICH: $10 Pork loin wrapped around pork belly chopped into bite sized pieces and placed in the ciabatta with a fresh pesto and arugula. FRIES: $4 was a little high, but who can resist fries?!?! MINT CUCUMBER LEMONADE: There is not an official drink menu pictured anywhere. Ordered this, and saw them fill up the 16 oz cup with ice, asked if I could get less ice....the guy decided that he would not fill up the cup all the way apparently?!?!? WTF?!?! If was wasn't for that cheap move, this place would have received 4 stars. The ambiance on the Packing House gives The Kroft and hipster vibe that is different that your typical lunch spot. I tried this place recently... The wait was very long but this place has such hype I figure it has to be good! I tried the fried chicken sandwich and the chicken pot pie poutine style (Canadian, chicken pot pies internal ingredients spilled over fries, basically). The pot pie was delicious! The fried sandwich was bland, too crunchy & tough (between the thick skin of the batter on the fried chicken and the bread). It would have been better were it grilled chicken.
