We really wanted to like the Lady Mary Tea House at the inn, but we were sadly disappointed. First, we had our tea and sandwiches inside the pretty tea house, but wanted to be seated outside because it was a pleasant day. We counted at least 8 tables with chairs on the pretty porch, but were told we could not do that. They should rethink that, IMO. Our tea arrived in small, personal teapots, but within a few minutes, the tea became cold- there was no tea-cozy or tea warmer provided to keep it hot. I have been to many tearooms and never not had a warmer for my tea. The four sandwich offerings were pretty enough- but very bland in taste. The scones came out with the dessert selections, oddly enough- which we did enjoy very much. Overall, we were not very impressed with our experience, and probably will not return. read more

This beautifully restored inn has a wonderful high tea. So happy that we discovered it. Their scones were baked to perfection and the variety and flavor of tea sandwiches was outstanding, . We go to high tea for my birthday every year, in the past we enjoyed high tea at the Four Seasons in Boston and at the Boston Public Library. This high tea compares favorably to both, and is so much closer and more convenient. Delighted to learn that they offer high tea all year, even in the dead of winter, from Thurs - Sun. By far the best B&B stay I've ever stayed at! As soon as you pull up the driveway and get an eyeful of the front of the house, you'll notice all these cool details in the architecture and landscaping. Both the interior and the outside are a true testament to host Ryan's commitment to preserving and showing off the original bones. I had a hard time choosing which suite, since they all looked fantastic, but after having the option of two rooms, we went with the Dogwood Suite, which had glorious morning light, a clawfoot tub to soak in, a dressing room with a chaise lounge (that I didn't know I needed until now), and a super comfy bed. I wish we had more than two nights to properly explore the first floor. Staying here, we were able to get a feel for the local arts community - even the soap in our bathroom was made locally. I'm usually not a huge breakfast person but every night I was here, I went to bed really looking forward to whatever Ryan would whip up. Our first morning, we had baked eggs and goat cheese; the next day, the most unbelievable French toast that I had to pack the leftovers for the road. The breakfast came with fruit and jam made from Orchard Hill Farm - I had to get some as gifts. Convenient location to Portsmouth and Portland, as well as Ogunquit, Wells, Kennebunkport. Well worth a stop even if you're planning on venturing further into Maine. I 100% recommend this place! It's perfect for anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, etc. We're already planning our next trip here, maybe for a murder mystery weekend. Amazing! That is the one word to describe the Lady Mary Inn. I have attended multiple events at the Lady Mary Inn, from a murder mystery event with my siblings, to high tea with friends fundraising the North Berwick Public Library. Every event has been spectacular, from the food to the decor. Both Ryan and Steve put time and effort into every event they host, ensuring that everyone (including those with food allergies such as myself) are able to eat the food they provide without worry and fully enjoy the event. This maybe the best B &B I've stayed in period! My husband, sister, and brother-in-law stayed two nights and it was terrific! Ryan, our host, was wonderful. The murder mystery was a blast. Owner Ryan kept us entertained and so well fed. He is a gem with so many talents. Our stay at The Lady Mary Inn is going to be the gold star by which we judge all our future B&B stays (sorry future hosts!). What a memorable vacation in such a historic setting... We were welcomed at the mansion by our host Ryan with a glass of homemade sangria. He gave us a tour, told us about all the history of the house, and invited us to explore at our leisure. He had a wealth of restaurant recommendations and insider knowledge of the best things to see and do in the area of which we took full advantage -- visiting restaurants, going for walks, and even blueberry picking! Our days at the Inn started with an incredible farm to table breakfast (including duck eggs, tomatoes, and peaches from his farm) set out in the formal dining room or the sunny, covered back porch. We spent days out exploring the area and yet we were happy to return to our spacious yet cozy room for a soak in the oversize tub and stretching out on the king bed. Throughout the house Ryan features local artists and artisans - even the soap in the rooms is locally produced which is a nice touch. Ryan was an amazingly welcoming host who made it feel like we were visiting an old friend. He was knowledgeable and easy to chat with and we loved hearing about all his plans for the historic estate. The community and the Hurd Manor are lucky to have a passionate and creative person caring for the estate's legacy. We're looking forward to visiting again next time we're in the area! read more

We just got back from a night at the Lady Mary and exploring nearby Wells area. It was a spur the moment, same day reservation just a short drive from nearby Portsmouth NH where we spent the day but the host, Ryan, was luckily able to accommodate us on short notice. This Inn and the little town of Wells turned out to be the highlight of our trip. No charming detail or modern convenience was overlooked with comfortable furnishings, a tastefully decorated spacious room, super soft towels, and lots of locally sourced personal touches like the bath soaps, farm fresh eggs, and to die for cream filled donuts at breakfast. The building is magnificent and Ryan can fill you in on its unique history. He also had great dining recommendations for nearby Wells, Ogunquit, and Kennebunk. The Lady Mary Inn is quickly becoming a "Go To" location for North Berwick. It certainly is a beautiful and historic structure and the renovations Ryan Gosser has made are all in keeping with this Victorian mansion's history. My wife and I recently spent a weekend there and frankly we are enthusiastic about the Inn, it's location and especially the hospitality of our host. Ryan is both entertaining and a great cook. He is a wonderful host who comfortably takes you through a fun, relaxing stay in his gorgeous Victorian manse. We celebrated a birthday with a Murder Mystery event with 1920's theme. From the warm welcome of arrival to the last delicious bite of breakfast on checkout day, Sally and Ben had every detail accounted for. The house is beautiful, clean, full of period details as well as modern conveniences (WiFi, A/C, modern baths, ample parking). The location is very convenient to Ogonquit, Wells, York, et al. at a fraction of Ogonquit prices. The homemade breakfasts are filling (juice, coffee, muffins, fruit, eggs, potatoes or bread, and meat - or not for vegetarians) delicious and a delight to see as Sally uses flowers from the garden to accent the plate. Ben and Sally are wonderful hosts. We stayed in the Salmon Falls Suite with a private bath and sitting room. Air conditioned as well. Very nice accommodations, very clean, the room was seen to everyday while we were about, with a complete new set of bath linens. Breakfasts were filling but not heavy so we were energized for a day of site seeing. Great location, not far from Portsmouth sites but also easily accessible to Ogunquit beaches and even to South Portland. We plan to come back!!! read more

When we arrived he greeted us by name and welcomed us to the property. In the first 5 minutes before even taking our billing information, Keith said, "We are so fortunate to host such fine guests like you and your wife, this is going to be a fun weekend." For someone to genuinely say something like that without knowing us was telling of the weekend to come. The house and its details are so incredible and the history which is deep rooted is just amazing. Listening to Keith (inn manager) and Ryan (owner) talk about the Lady Mary Inn is heartwarming and informative. Breakfast all 3 days exceeded what any champion would expect. Plates were full of divine fruits, local farm to table ingredients and baked goods and local jams. The breakfast table was full of guests with stories to tell which makes for lively entertainment and the making of new friendships. The towels were 10 star and the cleanliness of the entire property was amazing..the best we've seen ever. Wine and checkers with Keith was epic! We heard that Lady Mary patrols the hallways at night so we listen patiently till the luxurious King bed forced us to sleep. Keith told us about Ryan & Steve's farm were most of the farm to table ingredients are grown, however we didn't get to see it and weren't sure how to obtain an invitation. Hopefully next time. I spent two delightful days at Angel of the Berwicks when I took my daughter from CT to her summer job in Maine. From the moment we stepped inside the charming foyer, I knew we were going to enjoy our stay. Angel of the Berwicks is the former home of a factory owner who died many years ago, and afterward it had several other incarnations. Ben and Sally Gumm discovered it and spent considerable time restoring it. Their efforts produced an inn that is stately, yet warm and welcoming. It invokes the past, yet it has modern amenities (including wi-fi, which came in handy when I had an unexpected work emergency to handle). Our rooms were cozy, and the bed was incredibly comfortable. The sitting room was sunny, and the bathroom was fresh and clean. My daughter and I took a brief, enjoyable trip to nearby Ogonquit, but returned early because we planned to depart early the next day. The evening passed peacefully; I read a book I found in the inn's library. The next morning, as we were enjoying a delicious and plentiful breakfast with two other guests, Ben handed me directions to our destination - he had taken the time to look up the best route for us (it was more direct than Mapquest!). After I dropped my daughter off, I returned to the inn for another evening's rest before the six-hour drive home. Everything was just as peaceful and relaxing as the previous day. I recommend Angel of the Berwicks to anyone who plans to travel through Maine and needs a lovely, restful, affordable place to spend some time. read more

My wife and I just spent three restful nights at this stunning B&B. Our hosts, Sally and Ben, were extremely gracious and have lovingly restored this former wool merchant's mansion (it's on the National Register of Historic Places) to much of its former glory . The location in North Berwick is about 5 miles inland from the Rt. 1 border of Well & Ogunquit (with a price tag that is about 50% less than it would be 5 miles to the east). We found it very convenient to get to wherever we wanted and even found a way (on Mountain Rd, past Mt. Agamenticus) to bypass Ogunquit on our way to York, Maine (you will want GPS for this). We were in the Niagara Room (the honeymoon suite, not too much pressure,eh?) which has the strongest jetted tub I've ever experienced. The B&B is near a main st. (where Rts. 4 & 9 intersect) so if you are very sensitive to traffic noise maybe ask for a room to the back. We were to the front of the house and had little problem as our A/C provided sufficient white noise. read more

And it's off Route 1 a few miles, but not too far, from the tourists. Very clean. Good Maine style restaurant within walking distance. Only drawback is breakfast. No options. See-through coffee. Even with the less than average breakfast, I would stay here again because of the very fine mansion and location. read more
