Not to bad for a hotel bar and restaurant. The also have an extended happy hour with drink and food discounts. I had their hibiscus margarita calamari which was very good. And I had the salmon gnocchi with pesto creme. The salmon was good, the gnocchi was soft but the pesto crème need a bit of acid or something. I found out later that the truck didn't deliver the balsamic vinegar that should have been a reduction on top. That would answer the acid issue. Still not bad as hotel bars go.

Asian Zing Chicken Wings and Fried Chicken Pot Stickers. Both absolutely delicious!

Some of the reviews for this place are pretty terrifying but by and large I think The Local is…read moregetting dinged for simply being a generic airport bar/restaurant; it's by no means an establishment I'd go out of my way to visit but it's there and could be a lot worse. I unfortunately drew the short straw and just missed a potential flight back to Newark by a few minutes, so I had close to five or six hours until my official flight back (maybe if we'd known that beforehand, a trip to nearby downtown Norfolk would have been in order, but no matter). I was in Terminal B but the dining options there looked pretty bleak. An employee told me this one was slightly better so I did something I NEVER do and certainly wouldn't entertain if this were a busier airport - I walked back out past security, knowing I'd have to go through again in the near future, and made myself comfortable at a six-top near the bar. My waitress was phenomenal and honestly one of the few selling points here - I THINK her name might have been Tori. She also bore an eerie resemblance to actress Valorie Curry, who I don't think I've seen on screen since The Following a decade ago. Anyway. Very nice and basically let me just hang out for several hours taking up space (which was probably an easy sell given that the restaurant wasn't particularly busy throughout my visit there). She had a ton of tables in the front section to visit and always found time to check in with me. As an aside, I was there long enough to see quite a few informal interactions amongst the staff, and there was a lot of good vibes there and co-workers who clearly enjoyed spending time with one another; definitely not a given but a positive for sure. I wasn't insanely hungry off of two pretty hearty meals that morning and prior night, so I just got the crab dip to munch on, along with a glass of sauv blanc. Honestly, the crab dip itself was perfectly fine but in what I'd consider an unforced error, they've made the decision to coat the top of it with this rubbery layer of cheese. Mystifying. I was able to eat around it with minimal drama but that should 100% be removed from future crab dips - you're actually ruining the best part of the app. Otherwise, it was good though. It came with some pita crisps for dipping and a side of chips. If they removed that one annoying ingredient, this would be pretty legit. The prices to me are way too high. Yes, I think you should expect some upcharge given that you're at an airport, but this is an airport that doesn't appear to have been upgraded since 1991 with minimal travelers. The glass of wine was $22, which is just insulting; I'd be mildly annoyed at that if I were in my home airport of Newark though would at least understand it to some extent. And having reasonable pricing would lessen the impact of the mediocre food. At least you'd be getting what you pay for. Certainly not a full-throated endorsement here. I didn't sample any of the other sit-down restaurant options, and there's arguably a downside to picking one outside rather than inside security. But in defense of that decision, I was literally the only person at TSA both times and this wasn't terrible. It helped pass the time, and I think that's literally its primary purpose. So it checks off that box at least.

I used the QR code on the table to pull up the menu and as I was browsing, my server, Raven, came up to ask if I was able to pull it up ok and let me know that I would need to order through the app and she would deliver my food and drink. Easy enough! I ordered the fish n chips and a soda. Everything came out pretty quickly! The fish was a bit over fried but the size was decent. I ate about two of them and decided not to eat the last one (that was the most over fried one.) Fries and coleslaw were ok. Nothing was really disappointing, just what you might expect from an airport restaurant. Fish n chips were $22.99 and a soda was $3.99. Again, prices you would expect here. I have to say though, it was better than the burger I had at Here's to the Heroes in the terminal during my last trip. Overall, I had an okay experience. My server was great, came to check on me multiple times and was very friendly!

I like how in the dining area, they put covers over the overhead lights so it isn't super bright. AND THE DRINKS ARE SOOOOOOO GOOD. First time we went, we overheard the waitress say she didn't want to serve us, she was exhausted. Rightfully so, she was the only server. We held nothing against the server, we were peeved with the owner. The woman with the light hair. Took what felt like forever to even get drinks. They were also out of a lot of food... which isn't necessarily a bad thing... but the items I wanted were no longer available so I just ordered the fried green tomatoes. They were fine, they just needed more sauce and a bit more seasoning in the breading! The poor server was just miserable while we were there, and the owner was just kinda walking around telling everyone what needed to be done, not quite helping, more so micro managing. We ended up tipping the poor girl $35. I hope she got to keep it all. Fast forward to this week. We tried it out again. It was a bit warm. We had been Instructed that they had family visiting and if it got too loud to let her know. The noise wasn't the issue at all. When we sat down we saw that it was 76° inside! We wanted to eat though, so we tried to tough it out. There was only one waiter and then another girl helping him serve the food. Again, and I don't know how it happened again, the boy had said to the lady he didn't want to serve us, there was too much going on. She had told him he was going to serve us, strike 1. We ordered all of our food at once to make the poor kid's life a bit easier. We didn't get drinks until about 20 minutes after sitting down. (The pineapple drink bangs btw). And we were literally sitting there DRIPPING sweat. Even the owner had beads of sweat alllll over her face. We ended up asking for our order to go. And my husband ordered his sandwich without Cole slaw. We said that literally a COUPLE of minutes after we ordered. The food magically appeared, and they had US package it all up. And my husband couldn't even tell the owner that he asked for no Cole slaw, but she kept talking over him. And she ended up being the "polite" kind of rude after we asked for our food to go. We weren't angry, we were just hot. But looking back on the bigger picture, it definitely angry. Especially for the young people they have serving. The poor server was so stressed so again, I do not blame the servers. We tipped that bot $25 and again, I hope he gets it ALL. I 100% put the blame on the owners. This place should be a food truck... not a restaurant. The bad reviews didn't make sense to me.... Until they did.

The place inside is very cute and reminds me of a nice punk pop bar. The bar wraps around and there's some tables and a side table that we sat at to eat. I ordered one of their specialty coffees and it is quite the journey but I enjoyed it with the ginger beer and the coffee. My quiche was fluffy and delicious. It jiggled when I tapped it and the side salad tasted great with dill in it and it brightened up things. The combination of both was great. The crust on the quiche was nice as well. My spouse enjoyed their sandwich but didn't realize there was mustard so he ended up just using the chips to eat his egg and sausage. His egg was also fluffy. The patrons that came seemed friendly and you can tell who are locals since they greeted by name often. I love that this place is open. They also have local wine you can purchase. At first, the hostess said they were full inside but had a few seats outside. The weather was nice so we figured, sure. When we came outside, there were two other people that looked defeated. I asked how long they had been sitting there and one guy said 20 minutes, the other said 10. The whole time and no one had been there to even greet them. It was at this point, I knew we were doomed... but I never expected what actually happened. Eventually, a server comes out. He greets the other two folks then looks us and straight up ignores us. Look, ignore, and keep walking. Thinking that maybe he's just busy we chilled some and waited... nope... gave them water and still continued to ignore us. After THREE more times of this waiter ignoring us, we decided to go to the hostess for alternate seating. While there at the front, I was so infuriated that I told 3 other customer waiting in line our experience and insisted they enter at their own risk. They left. While we did get another seat with a waitress that was very amenable, the service from everyone else was just lackluster as heck. Overall, if you're just struggling for wings, sure... hit this place up. However, if you want an actual decent experience b/c of how much the cost of nights are... I'd advise pass.
