My experience with The LASIK Institute was incredibly disappointing and, ultimately, a complete waste of time. I initially scheduled a consultation only to receive a phone call the afternoon before my morning appointment informing me that I needed to reschedule because the office had decided to hold a staff meeting during my appointment time. As someone driving several hours away, arranging childcare, and coordinating time off work, this was frustrating, but I accommodated the change. At my rescheduled consultation, I was told to expect the visit to take 45-60 minutes from check-in. After waiting well over 45 minutes without being seen, I politely approached the front desk for an update. One receptionist, whom I believe was Arianne, looked visibly annoyed that I approached. While assisting another patient, she turned to her coworker, looked directly at me, and said, **"Can you see what THAT WOMAN wants?"** The tone and body language were unmistakably disrespectful. Thankfully, Tokenya handled the situation professionally, smiled, checked on my appointment, and treated me with courtesy. Kay completed my scans and was pleasant throughout the process. The optometrist thoroughly explained everything, answered all of my questions, and even patiently answered my child's questions. Because I was concerned about my astigmatism, he reassured me my eyes were in excellent condition, had zero concerns, and repeatedly told me I was an excellent candidate for LASIK. He and Kay were the highlight of my experience. I scheduled surgery for the following week and completed payment arrangements. The day before my procedure, I received another call informing me that my 10:00 a.m. surgery was being moved to 2:45 p.m. because "the surgeon doesn't even come in until 1:00." Again, I had already arranged time off work, transportation, and childcare, but I accepted the change. On surgery day, I arrived on time, completed the repeat scans, and met with Dr. Carr. He reviewed my eye measurements, discussed the risk of long-term dry eye, spent time discussing politics, and told me that although my eyes looked "pristine," there was a possibility of chronic dry eye after LASIK. He explained the risks and concluded by saying the decision to proceed was ultimately mine. After carefully considering everything, I told him I wanted to move forward. His response was, **"I'm not comfortable doing the procedure. I'd be happy to have you see my friend and colleague, Dr. Soeken, for a second opinion."** I was stunned. To be clear, I appreciate a surgeon refusing to perform a procedure they aren't comfortable with. Patient safety should always come first. My issue is how this entire process was handled. If the concerns were significant enough to cancel surgery, they should have been communicated before I rearranged my work schedule, coordinated childcare, drove several hours, and arrived expecting surgery. They also should not have presented the decision as ultimately being mine if the procedure was never actually an option. Instead, I dealt with repeated rescheduling, unprofessional front desk behavior, and invested significant time and money preparing for a surgery that was canceled only after I had already arrived. The overall experience was disorganized, poorly coordinated, and left me with absolutely no confidence in the practice. If you're considering LASIK and have to travel, arrange childcare, or take time off work, understand that your consultation--and even your surgery--may change with very little notice. I'm giving it one star, but I don't even want to do that. I previously had Lasik done on my right eye a few years ago. I called back to get an appointment to go ahead and get my left eye done and possibly getting my right eye redone by PRK. I was rudely spoken to by someone at the Lasik center Stating that I needed to go to my eye doctor and pay for somebody to give me a vision test, Why would I would I pay for somebody to give me a vision test when I'm going into the company to possibly get Lasik. It makes absolutely no sense to me. And not to mention you guys did my previous surgery wouldn't you want to take care of a customer that has already paid for Lasik? This is completely ridiculous . I recommend go to any other lasik office that actually cares about their patients. This company only cares about money. Which is unfortunate because I think the doctors are good. Do yourself a favor don't let them suck you in on how great they are. They're all nice and sweet until you pay them. And then they don't want to hear back from You again! read more

So I finally took the plunge and decided to get lasik eye surgery so here is my experience.... After constantly getting pop ups about getting $1000 off at this business, I decided to schedule a consultation for the following week on a Monday. Monday, I arrived for my consultation. The waiting area was empty and I was taken to the back for scans within five mins. The assistant performed all the eye exams needed and informed me that I was a candidate for lasik and scheduled my exam. I came the day or surgery expecting to be in and out but I was fooled. Apparently they go in groups and it's first come first serve. I ended up being there for hours waiting to get the surgery. I feel like the timing and scheduling is my only complaint. My vision is great though so no complaints. read more

I had Lasik surgery here in the fall of 2022, and I was not adequately counseled on the procedure's risks, including long-term risks that are common yet not acknowledged. I now have persistent eye pain/sensitivity/redness that I may have to live with forever, significantly disrupting my quality of life and well-being. I am a doctor and understand the consenting process - where a Physician systematically describes the procedure's short-term and long-term risks. What I received was not an adequate explanation of the risks I was taking on. No discussions were had about the evidence showing many people having significant long-term side effects to enable me to make an informed decision. This is overall a happy story about my Lasik journey. I am THRILLED with my vision today, 7 days after my "enhancement" surgery with Dr.Carr. Wanted to share my story: Eleven months ago I had my first surgery with Dr. Legault. It was a painful surgery for me and I was completely out of commission for about four days, with a lingering headache that lasted about a week. No infections, no gross complications, friendly surgeon, great customer service at Durham location, I followed all the post-surgery rules to the tee.... but my vision was blurry, I was not able to read text from a TV in the same room, nighttime was a blurry nightmare, and I had headaches when I never had them before. I came back a month after initial surgery to ask if the blurriness and headaches were normal and they told me my eyes were still adjusting and to kinda wait it out. Six months later, I was still having all of the same issues - I was working in Cleveland and went to the Cleveland Vision Institute branch for a check in in-person, they confirmed I would probably qualify for a second surgery/"enhancement" but I should go back to Durham where I had my initial surgery. At eight months out, I really could not do my job and went to my eye doctor and got back into contacts. When I knew I had some down for the enhancement surgery at month ten, I called to make an appointment. They directed me to the enhancement team - I spoke with a friendly woman who explained the process. She texted me a form that I printed out to take to a local eye doctor and paid for the comprehensive eye exam myself with the data the enhancement team was looking for. I faxed the form back to the Vision Institute and waited for the call whether I would qualify or not, about a week later I got the call that I did qualify, gratefully. She was set to make an appointment for me over the phone at the Durham location, but a glitch in the computer the schedule was not open for appointments... she said someone from that center would call me back. I waited a week and never heard from anyone. I called the main center again - and they were able to set up my enhancement evaluation appointment. The appointment went fine. I let them know I was in town specifically to get the revision, but they told me I needed to do it with my original surgeon and he would not be rotating in Durham for a few weeks. They contacted the surgeon who was in town next and after reviewing my current eye exam, he was gracious enough to perform my second surgery. I was so so grateful. I had it on a Friday, it was an uncomfortable Friday and Saturday but no pain, and I could see perfectly 2 days later with absolutely no blurriness, headaches, nighttime is clear - THANK YOU DR. This was absolutely worth it, I could not recommend it enough (wanted to get this out of the way before the review). I contacted my insurance regarding LASIK in the beginning of September after being frustrated with foggy contacts and my ophthalmologist doing nothing but changing the brand of contacts each time I returned with the problem. They set me up a free consultation with The LASIK Vision Institute three days after my call. By the way, the hours these folks offer are incredibly generous including Saturdays every other week. My insurance company provided me some basic numbers for pricing but I highly recommend just waiting until you get in at the consultation to think about price as the discount LASIK Vision Institute offered me was better than the "deal" my insurance had. The office space was clean and the staff was superb. By far my favorite thing in the whole experience was the staff, everyone I interacted with was professional, down-to-earth, and personable. The consultation was set for 3:30 and I was in the process right after my paperwork was turned in. They go through the whole process; checking your eyes, doing exams, talking you through everything so you understand what's happening and why. After finding out I was a good candidate the "sales pitch" ran itself, I was already sold and never felt pressured into the procedure. I was then flabbergasted to find out I could have the procedure the following Friday when I anticipated having to wait weeks/months. Dr. Ball and his vast knowledge about eyes and the process absolutely sold me. I decided to put it off for another week so I could have the post-op the next day when they had Saturday hours. You leave the consultation with a folder with all the information you could ever need and it truly helps you feel at ease. Procedure day was over before I even knew it. I was taken in before my procedure time and was walking out of the office 40 minutes later. Dr. Machat and the staff were great. He talked me through the entire procedure, guiding and reassuring without fail. Every nerve I had going into the procedure was quashed by the calming demeanor of this skilled man and the nurse aiding in the procedure. Went back the next day for my post-op to find I was now better than 20/20 when I was told I would probably see 20/25 results. No more foggy contacts or glasses, that cannot be beat. As you can surmise, I cannot recommend this enough. The staff at LASIK Vision Institute as passionate about vision, definitely Dr. Ball and his love for eyes. I highly recommend you do your research and get other consultations with local LASIK doctors as well. I'm so glad I got one more consultation after coming here. The difference was night and day, these are my EYES we're talking about. This office pressured me from the beginning that I needed to have the LASIK surgery ASAP. That they were running a special, it only lasted 2 weeks. When I got there, a technician did 3 different eye exams/scans, she asked me if I had worn contacts lately (this is important later) but didn't follow up with anything further. I never got to meet with any doctor. She then said that I just needed to choose the LASIK type I wanted. I wasn't given any medical explanation to the difference between WFO and Topography-Contora (which they charge more for @ $4200) nor was I given a doctors recommendation on what fit my eyes better. She then offered me an appointment for the next day, or 7 days out. I then was told that I was to pay for my surgery through PayPal a couple days before the day of surgery, which was a red flag to me. I was also told I had to buy the Groupon to get their special price otherwise I'd pay $5200, and IF I canceled or moved the surgery for any reason past 2 weeks of my initial visit, that they would no longer honor the Groupon, even if I came back for another consultation. The pressuring from this place was ridiculous. So, I checked with my eye doctor and asked for his recommendation of a local LASIK doctor. This is where I realized how little The LASIK Vision Institute cared about my vision and me as a patient. This other office was amazing. They did many different scans of my eyes, explaining every single one of them. I actually got to meet with the doctor, who explained the different LASIK options and what his recommendation was for me and MY eyes. Then, they told me that I needed to be OUT OF MY CONTACTS for 7 full days so my eye shape could be in it's normal state, I'd come for a pre-op appointment the day before LASIK for them to retake all the scans for the best results!!! I couldn't believe it. LASIK Institute was willing to do my LASIK the next day when I had been in my contacts 2 days prior??? For the sake of your vision, please do research. Don't allow them to pressure you into getting a major surgery involving your eyes because some "special" will expire. If you look at their Groupon, it actually never expires. It was a sales tactic to try and pressure me into the surgery. A terrible one. A patient should be comfortable with a decision like this, not treated with this shady money grabbing practices leaving patients with a lesser quality LASIK result on top of it. read more

I started my journey to Lasik with Lasik Vision Institute in July and completed the Lasik Procedure in September. I have been in glasses since 3rd grade and contacts since 6th grade. Over the course of the years, I wore contacts much more frequently than my glasses, 90% of the time sleeping in them, causing scaring on my eye. I knew that if I kept this habit up, my vision would soon suffer. I have explored the thought of Lasik for about 4 years now and decided that now was the time to do research and pursue it. The Consultation: My consultation went very well. I learned about this opportunity via Groupon. Of course, when it comes to your vision and the use of a Groupon, it can be unsettling. However, LVI offered a free consultation, so I figured I would check out the company before purchasing. The staff ran a series of vision tests to confirm if I was a good candidate, check my prescription and eye health. To conclude, I met with the Office Assistant to go over pricing and any additional add ons I would like to include (punctal plugs, lifetime assurance, etc.) as well as set up a day for the procedure. Customer Service Experience: I am very critical about customer experiences when it comes to health as well as what I consider huge investments (financially and medically). Ilse was very warm and welcoming at the front desk. She thoughtfully answered any questions I had about the disclosures I was signing and follow up visits. Sarah, one of the Technicians, was very knowledgeable about the procedure. Before the procedure, she made sure I felt at ease and answered any questions I had before beginning the procedure. After the procedure, she took her time explaining post-care instructions and the length of recovery and timeline of results. Ashley was nice. When it comes to pricing, like any company, it can seem like they are trying to sell you extra add-ons to increase what you pay. However, Ashley was very trustworthy and walked me through everything to make sure I was making the best decision for me. The Procedure: I opted for Lasik and Lasik only, there was an opportunity for me to do PRK instead. After reading reviews (please, please, please do your research), I learned that PRK was not the route for me or one that I wanted to pursue. Dr. Brusco is phenomenal. As soon as I met him, I instantly knew that I would be in great hands. He also has a stellar background in Lasik and Ophthalmology. I was at ease the entire procedure. The procedure took a total of 10 minutes. Dr. Brusco walks you through it step by step with transparency. Recovery: As I write this review, I am on day 2 post-recovery. I can honestly say that I have been in very little pain post-procedure. Immediately after, my eyes did not hurt. My vision was significantly better at this point, however, my vision was still blurry, so as advised, I had to get a ride home. About 3 hours after, my eyes were a little sore (scale 1-10, a 3) I took a nap and when I woke up, the pain was gone and my vision was even more clear. The next day I had a follow up appointment and my vision was getting better (I was told it takes about a week to get 100% - but of course, everyones eyes are different). I couldn't be more pleased with my experience from the Lasik Vision Institute in Durham, NC. I went to an assessment on Wednesday and was told that Lasik was an option for my eye sight. They gave me options for appointments of the week of, the next week, and the week after. I chose the Friday of the week two days after the assessment. They were not pushy at all and the price told me at my assessment had no strings attached. The wait times were very short and the staff were very friendly. The surgery day arrived. I was there maybe a total of 2 hours. I had no pain afterwards. Went home and slept the night to wake up to 90% vision. Still a little blurry. Returned for follow up and was told at that time my vision was 20/20. 32 years of glasses and contacts and in 2 hours- none. I should have done this 20 years ago. read more

My surgeon switched my procedure from Lasik to PRK the day of my surgery and gave me five minutes to decide whether I would like to continue. I had prepared to get eye surgery and felt pressured to go along with it, so I did and I deeply regret that decision. The surgeon explained there would likely be mild discomfort for the next four days and that I could probably go back to work on the following Tuesday (I had surgery on a Friday). HA. I was in some of the worst pain I've ever experienced the first day a few hours after the procedure. My eyes felt like they were burning out of my skull and my eyes were non-stop tearing up for about 24 hours, which caused a lot of swelling around my eyes and a severe headache that lasted days. The first three days were hell. I basically sat in a dark room and tried to sleep for three days, but mostly couldn't because of the intense pain. By the time Tuesday came along, I still could not leave the dark room; any bit of light hitting my eyes would cause searing migraine-like pain. They normally build a certain drug for the pain in your system, but since my surgeon switched procedures the day-of, it likely took a while before it kicked in even though I got it the medicine day of surgery. After those first three days, the pain and light-sensitivity significantly subsided, but I could not see well enough to be functional on my own for about two weeks. The worst part of all this was the follow-up care. I saw Dr. Kahn one day over a week after the surgery to take off the temporary contacts. Although I was much more functional and not in pain at this point, my vision was and continues to be very blurry. When I described how blind-sighted I felt about the pain, the doctor was very defensive and got angry with me and said "pain is subjective" and essentially dismissed that I had actually been in any pain. Lady, I've been through unmedicated child labor. I know what pain is. She also said I shouldn't complain because my eyes were better than before. I did not pay thousands of dollars and experience some of the worst pain of my life for my eyes to be better but not functional. Her demeanor was completely rude, dismissive, and not at all considerate of my situation. She also said that she's never heard of anyone ever having pain associated with PRK. If she ever discovers the Internet, she'll find that there are heaps of threads on people's eyes reacting poorly to PRK (which I did not know was a thing because I did not really research it, thinking I was getting the Lasik procedure). She did a vision test and looked at my eyes, but never told me anything about how my eyes looked or how specifically they've progressed. She seemed more personally focused on combating and negating any of my feedback than actually listening to me or giving me important information. Gaslighting your patients when you work in the medical profession isn't a good look. It is one month after the surgery today and I still can't drive myself around places. My near-sight is as good as it was before, which is great for my work, but my far-sight still has a long ways to go. I can see better than before, sure, but I'm at about 60 percent of vision. I get frequent headaches from having blurry vision all day and it has seriously hindered my quality of life! They say it can take up to six months for healing and I am hoping for the best, but man was this NOT WORTH IT. I truly regret my decision to get PRK! If you are considering PRK, please consider that your reaction might be bad and to plan accordingly. I am most annoyed at the lack of preparation I received for how damaging and intrusive the surgery recovery would be on my life. They seemed to genuinely not care about my well-being. read more

I had my surgery done at the Raleigh/Durham location. The surgery went fine, but right away I did not get the corrected vision I was prescribed to get. My right eye was 20/20 but my left eye was ~20/80. Even after about a month when my good eye corrected for the poor vision in the other eye, I still cannot see well at a distance (e.g. read street signs, license plates until I am right at them). After going almost weekly for re-checks and then almost monthly, they concluded my vision was not where it was supposed to be and that they did not know what went wrong during the procedure to cause the issue. About 5 months after the surgery they said they would refer it to the surgeon to fix my one eye with additional surgery. This of course is in their statement that they will fix it until you are happy, which I am not as I still have to wear glasses (new ones I had to buy). It is now 7 months since my surgery and they have not called me to schedule my new surgery. I have called them twice and both times they have said they will call me back, but I am waiting ... Immediately upon writing this they called me (~6pm), but I was at a work dinner and was unable to pick up. Before I was available to call back someone from Lasik central called me, twice! I called back around ~10am the next day and was unable to schedule my surgery because the technician was in surgery, so again waiting for a call back. When you look at these reviews, make sure they are for the Raleigh/Durham location, as a lot are for other locations. The staff here is what sets them apart - I find them to be very positive, enthusiastic, cheerful and easy to relate to. This made my decision easy with regards to where to get my surgery because I could have gone elsewhere, but this team made me feel super-comfortable. The scheduling process was a breeze, the technicians are awesome, the doctors are wonderful and most importantly the surgery itself was successful. They have the latest blade-less technology so no worries there. I had my lasik last week, and I'm already at 20/15 with no complications. For anyone considering lasik in the Triangle area, I'd encourage you to visit since I believe no place else delivers great results at an affordable price. I got the run around. I had to book my appointment well over a month out. That's fine- I get that Saturday appointments go fast. However two days before my appointment I get an email 10 min before they close saying the doctor has a an emergency and they need to reschedule my appointment. Ok. Again I get that emergencies happen and I won't hold anyone against them. What I DON'T appreciate is calling again to reschedule, getting someone from their call center in FL who tells me they don't even see an appointment and that "sorry no availability" and that I need to call the Durham office directly. I did call the office directly at lest 4 times in their hours and each time I get sent to the call center who is unable to help. It's frustrating. When something is as important as your eyes you hope the largest provider in the US could handle this better. read more

Had a very great experience with the Durham LVI! I came back in May of 2018 for my free consultation and got all the info and answers I was looking for, plus more! They had a groupon available for a while, but it does not covers the lifetime warranty and touch ups so I opted to pay in full for those perks. They do a whole bunch of scans of your eyes and test your vision to see if you qualify for the PRK, Lasik or neither. I qualified for lasik from some doctors and PRK for others, and I ended up traveling to Charlotte for the actual surgery with Dr. George which went amazing, but is another review all together! Everyone here at the Durham LVI branch was super helpful, attentive and responsive! I am leaving my final follow up appointment with 20/20 vision after a decade + of dealing with contacts and glasses! Such a great experience! read more

Never use the lasik vision institute of durham to do your lazer eye surgery. They dont care about thier customers. I ran out of pain pills yesterday and they said too bad so sad. I have been awake since 3am in pain, feeling like rocks were being ground into my eyes. I have suffered needlessly. Avoid them like the plague. The surgery i had was PRK. It is where the scrape off the top layer of your cornea and zap you with lazers. The pain is horrendous second only to child birth. And my pain seems to matter very little to them. read more

Everything about this place has been great except one thing.. the staff was great, the lasik procedure was quick and I had no issues with the recovery. However, for my follow up appointment the next day and a week after surgery, the doctor was late. I was told the follow up appointment was going to take 5 minutes. I thought, great! I'll be able to make it to work in no time! There was a full waiting room that day and one of the young ladies announced that Dr.Khann was running late due to an accident on the highway. It happens, I get it. I was seen shortly after the doctor arrived, after 30 minutes of waiting. Again, I understand people run late sometimes so I brushed it off. I went back for my post-op appointment a week later. Had a 9:00 appointment, arrived at 8:50, the doctor rushes in at 9:20 on the dot. Waited 45 minutes this time to be seen with only the first patient in front of me and one other sitting in the waiting room. Unprofessional. So, this is the downside about this place. I am writing this review to warn people to be exceptionally leary of this establishment and their staff. I went in for an initial consult for lasik and walked out 3 hours later with an inaccurate synopsis of the best procedure for my eyes, along with the them fraudulently processing a credit card application WithOut my approval! Do not waste your time or money, their are more reputable companies that can perform the lasik procedures! read more
