    Veggie Combo
    Anirudh P.

The restaurant's ambience and the service were not too bad. The portion sizes were also not an issue but the quality of the food items served were bad, VERY bad. Only the naan bread tasted like it was freshly made. Everything else in the veggie combo tasted like they were stir fried straight out of a frozen bag of ingredients. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for a vegetarian seeking Indian food. The appearance of spinach in the palak paneer was bad with too many undercooked "stems". I've never thought someone could fail in cooking Palak Paneer but the chef at "The Little India" proved me wrong today!

My wife is very fussy food wise. She lives in Des Plaines and drives here twice a month to eat here. It is her favorite Indian restaurant in the whole city (as far as she knows) and we live close to a street full of Indian restaurants (Devon.) I also greatly enjoy their food. Her favorite is the lunch special and she always picks the mutter paneer as the vegi.

Any time I have wanted some really good Indian food, it was always understood that Devon Avenue was the location to go. While riding the Red Line towards Rogers Park, I noticed Little India and made a note to myself to see what they had on their menu that would lure me there instead of me going to Devon Avenue. Mango lassi. Samosas. Chana masala. Bhatura. The samosas were worthy of an extra purchase, as I often eat them for breakfast. The chana masala came in a hearty gravy, not like the thick gravy you get in South Indian chana masala. The bhatura was perfect with the chana masala. And I got the food spicy the way that I like it. I am more conscious of price when the quality of the food lacks. At The Little India, the prices are comparable to what you get at any of the eateries along the Devon Avenue stretch. I have been the the restaurant three times to date, and I see in my crystal ball that I will return several more times.

I reviewed this restaurant more than a year ago and gave it a bad review because I felt that the quality of food had slipped significantly. I never ate at the restaurant because service there was always outrageously slow. The wife and I ordered delivery often and the quality gradually declined to the point where we stopped ordering it; hence the bad review. Naan was burnt, etc. We recently gave this restaurant another try for delivery and it was good. The wife had chana masala and I had chicken vindaloo. Both were good. The vegetable samosas were also good. The first time we ordered from here, it was probably 4-5 stars. Now it's back to three after a decline. I hope it continues to improve.

A beautiful way to end the day as the Sun prepares to set.

We've been customers for a few years. Their naan selection is unmatched. Everything we've had from here has been amazing.

Nice variety of food…read morethat is made fresh and is reasonably priced. ===== I first heard of this place from Reddit and it was described as a good grocery with a food court. The food court part definitely rang true, but I was surprised at how small the grocery store was. I think Metro Spice Mart by Presidential Towers is 20 times bigger than the store here, though it was nice to see that they had fresh injera. You can probably find the basics here, but the grocery part definitely takes a backseat to the food court part, which I'm not exactly complaining about. The food court has a really nice menu with pictures all across one of the walls. Everything looked and smelled really great, and I definitely want to try more of the menu next time! We got some paratha, samosas, kheer, halwa, chai, and a beef roll recently. The paratha took a while since it was made fresh, but the buttery flavor was superb and I'd definitely order it again. Would definitely get the kheer again, too. The samosas came with a yogurt and a tamarind sauce, which I appreciated. The beef roll was a little dry, though a decent size. I don't generally like halwa and this one had a perfumey flavor my family didn't like. The chai was fine. I like how it's near a bunch of other large Asian grocery stores. Next time I'm in the area and have a hankering for Indian/Pakistani food, will definitely be back!

The chicken biryani had bones it which I was really hoping it wouldn't. The website said boneless :( All in all, I will definitely order again and adjust my order. We came here shortly after they opened and finally got back around to visiting again…read more It was delicious! I had the Shapta. Unfortunately they were out of the tingmo, so I got the garlic naan instead. My partner got the chow mein with chicken (fair warning, the chow mein noodles are spicy!) I also got the masala tea and it was prepared the traditional way, you can tell because as it cools it forms a skin on the top. Our order was slightly delayed, so they gave us a complimentary dessert. I won't wait as long to come back next time.

However, they are not without their kinks that need to be worked out - growing pains, if you will. I ordered the Butter Chicken with rice. Getting the food took somewhere between 10-15 minutes. I am going to assume it was made fresh, but considering it was just rice, chicken in sauce, and a couple veggie slices, I couldn't tell you for sure. With the veggie slices, I am left wondering "why?" It was a couple slices of carrot and cucumber. They lacked any kind of preparation or seasoning (not even salt), and took up half the tray. Again, why? The rice, meanwhile, was cooked perfectly. It wasn't at all sticky, and each grain could be seperated. The issue here is with portion size. Rice not only serves as a carb/starch element, but also works to absorb sauce. While I don't like it, I understand why a business would skimp on proteins... but skimping on rice seems, for lack of a better term, inappropriate. Then we come to the protein. There was an ample amount of chicken. The meat itself was tender, and the sauce had good flavor. While not mind-blowing, it had a mild heat, and light tomato, cream, and spice notes. While I would have liked the flavors to be bolder, I cannot in good conscious call the dish bland. Finally, there is the matter of price. After tax, the Butter Chicken came to just over $14. Even though I appreciate that nothing is cheap anymore, this felt a little excessive considering the quality and quantity of food I received. Final verdict: While Kathmandu Cafe had great potential, andn I am especially looking forward to trying their momo, as well as their Tibetan menu, where it comes to the Indian side of their menu, I do not feel a draw to return and order more.

Highly recommend the crab rangoon + soulful platter. ===== Stopped by one weekend near opening and was able to get seated right away! They have a good number of tables outside and inside and seem overall fairly popular since there were already a few tables before us. The menu is huge and had seemed to be mostly Asian-ish, with some other items sprinkled in. We ordered: - crab rangoon - 5/5 - very tasty and light, sauce was a great complement - soulful platter with 'chicken' wing - 4.5/5- loved the variety of components. The 'chicken' wing was a highlight and had great texture and flavor; cornbread was also really tasty. Mac and cheese had a strong nutritional yeast flavor, which I enjoyed, but kind of wish it were more cheesy. Mashed potatoes were ok. Generous portion of collard greens. - mush love - 3/5 - huge portion, but the breading was very thick and crunchy. I wish the individual pieces were split up more and the breading a bit lighter; i also wish the sauce were the same as the one for the crab rangoon. This one was more of a bbq. Definitely would come back to try more items on the menu! I was intrigued by the drinks, though they were extremely expensive (e.g. 9$+). Staff were friendly, and I appreciate the disclaimer on the menu that they pay their staff a livable wage.

Typically, I reject these dietary labels, as what we all eat is food. Simply food. However, I'm also not someone who is all "OH EW, VEGAN STUFF, NO." I will not only never say that, but I will ALWAYS try something new. You should too. ON TO THE FOOD. I had heard talk of their Ramen, so I immediately ordered that. OH MY GAWD. It is so good. It tastes like "regular" ramen, but is 100% vegan. There was a strip of stuff (it was seitan) that looked like the pork belly that typically comes in Tonkatsu ramen. How is this not meat?! It was SO GOOD and had the texture of meat. But it wasn't meat. The broth is silky smoove, savory and . . . my gawd, I drank every single drop. The noodles and veg things that typically come in ramen were there, and just delicious. Writing this review, I am now craving this ramen. We had a couple other appetizers that were fantastic too! Some breaded mushroom app that was super tasty. I'm typically not a breaded food fan, but this was light and crispy and really tasty. The interior is spare, uncluttered, full of light and spotlessly clean. The staff is so helpful, friendly, and earnest with answering any questions. No booze, it's BYOB, but they have a lot of Kombuchas to try! A neighborhood gem that I will now keep in rotation when dining out.
