This spot has my favorite beer selection in the neighborhood. It isn't big, but they know their stuff. They are also constantly getting new beers in, and will be adding more taps soon. The manager is even trying to get one of my favorite hometown beers on tap, which would be awesome. The prices simply cannot be beat in New York, and the staff are all really amazing. The setup is great for watching a game on one of the TVs, and while they may not have a kitchen, the bartenders can suggest some great nearby options for delivery. They have great daily deals and happy hour specials, and also have a few cheap beer options that are available all the time. I had a rather disappointing experience earlier this month. I came here for a group meeting with some associates, went to the bar and tried to order a cider. I was ignored by the first bartender and finally got a drink the second time around by another bartender. I was not too pleased, as there weren't that many people at the bar. I came to the local with three of my friends expecting to have a few beers but when we walked in the bartender was very rude. After a few minutes and an older white guy walked in and he was greeted in a better manor. Maybe she didn't like us cause were young or maybe cause were not white? Idk. I liked this bar a lot, I'm not from the area but was looking for someplace to hang and watch a game in Astoria that wasn't too loud. Bartenders are friendly and the beer selection is solid, not to mention the never-ending popcorn. The music also is good and not overwhelming in some places. after dinner we stopped by the local bar (that's the name ) for a few drinks and some baseball watching along with a bit of preseason football and as i stated many times , astoria has it all . maybe not the most sports climate inside but enough tvs around to get the job done . i usually don't sit at the bar but i was able to find three corner stools and the giant tvs have all the local games on . simple decor with a brownish orange wood bar with padded stools and the back room has a bunch of high tables and chairs . the outdoor patio area with bench seating had a scattering of folks drinking , talking and smoking . it's friday night so get ready for karaoke which we will skip as the place is starting to fill with more folks .the chalkboard has a list of assorted beers domestic and international all which i have no knowledge of . my only issue for future visits is no kitchen which means no food but they do have popcorn and they don't mind food from outside . the bartenders are a plus ok in my book as they were always checking if we needed refills when our pints were empty . it's not some loud dive bar with shady looking characters and i like the mix of new and old tunes at easy on the ears level .if you are into low key bars that you can grab a few drinks without the bulls#it atmosphere then i would recommend the local when in the astoria area . . read more

The Local is a phenomenal hidden gem in Astoria. With a low-key vibe and friendly staff, Local is a great place to start or end a night. It has a very decent craft beer selection, and I love how much seating they had considering their small space. BIG bonus points for having a back patio and FREE karaoke (at least the Friday I was there). It was buzzing, but never too noisy; laid back, but not dead. I can't recommend this bar enough. A modern classic. I discovered the Local thanks to their coupon in the Queens Beer Book, and boy am I glad I did. They have an amazing beer selection, about 20 taps I think. They rotate the beers every week, there are about 3-6 news ones every time I go in. The best part, is that all day M-W, they have $5 12oz pours of every beer! 9% Imperial Stouts and barlywines that usually would be $11 at some other Astoria beer bar included! There is free popcorn anytime, just ask! Football Sundays they have free buffet, sometimes it is from the grill and other times it's 6ft party subs. Holiday parties are amazing, I went for Mardi Gras and they had homemade jambalaya! They have back outdoor patio that is great during the spring. Friday is karaoke, usually starts at 11 or 1130pm. (My one complaint, I wish it started at 9 or 10!) The second best feature of the place is the dart board in back. There is league play with Astoria Social Darts on Mondays, we spoke to the manager and got our team to play there. We are so happy there. But the best feature of the bar is the staff. They are all like a family. Jason and Joy and everyone is great there. Super friendly and accommodating, and as long as you are not a shit there may be a few buy backs in your future! It is not usually crowded or crazy here, during events or karaoke it can get almost full but nothing hectic. Oh an it is BYO-food. The pizza place next door is great and so is the souvlaki truck down the block. Again, I can't recommend The Local Bar Astoria enough! read more

This is my favorite new go-to spot in the neighborhood. I wandered in randomly one night on my walk home- it turned out it was their inaugural Friday Night. I've been a staple here ever since. A HUGE upgrade from the abysmal wreck that was Crehan's, this place is a great mix of locals who are all breathing a collective sigh or relief that we have found a neighborhood bar with cheap drinks, friendly staff (and incredible ownership), and positive vibes all around. Stop in for a drink but beware- once you set foot through this door, you can't stop at just one. And quite frankly, you won't want to. read more

Hello, First of all it's worth mentioning the fact that this place is not the real deal. Come to local if you wanna enjoy a conversation meet a friend etc.. Now I am a goody person and a "professional" Here is what I think: The food is OK, giving the fact that the "chef" use fresh ingredients to the minimum.. Lots of ingredients are from caned or frozen food of course you know what iam saying. I am not trying to be a food critic ratter I just wanna make sure you expect the unexpected ... Service was ok, please this is not a tree star restaurant .. To sum up LOCAL is an ok place good for drinks but I wouldn't recommend food. It's just the way it is.. (Not the whole manu- they don't make cheese and cheese is awesome - you know what iam saying.. We stopped in here the other day for a drink and had a great time. They haven't even had their opening soiree yet, but the place is open for business. What I liked - Jason our bartender was fantastic. He's on the ball, makes a nice manhattan, and is a local himself so was a lot of fun to talk to. It's fun but not too loud, you can actually have a conversation. And the beer selection is OK, they could definitely stand to put some better craft beers on tap, but they have Harpoon which was great. I wish all bars could be this cool. We were checking out Queens for a few days, scoping out different areas to potentially move, when we stumbled upon this place. I immediately knew it would be great. When we walked in, we heard 90's alternative music playing, which was the first awesome sign. Chris, the bartender, was so sweet and helpful. He was quick to get us our drinks, never letting our drinks get empty. He was very attentive and helpful when we were interrogating him about the best places to eat and live there, since we're from Chicago and it was out first time checking the area out. The vibe inside is mellow and comfortable. The patrons were friendly and talkative. There is a dart board, pool table and cozy outdoor patio, which was nice in July. We were sad we couldn't stay longer to check out a band Chris told us would be playing there over the weekend. If we didn't have to drive back to our hotel in LIC, we would've closed the place down! Came in to watch basketball playoffs and really enjoyed this bar! The popcorn was plentiful (a little too much because it's hard to stop eating!) and the bartender was really nice. They have a ton of menus for you to get delivery because there's no food there. After the game we played darts. Had a great time! read more
