Typically this is one of my favorite restaurants. Went here both yesterday (for a very late lunch) and today (for dinner with another couple). The food has been pretty good and usually the service is great. However, tonight, with the restaurant half empty and our table only being 4 people, we had a nearly 2 1/2 hr dinner. Thanks to the dinner company, it was bearable, but it should NOT have been such a long dinner. Multiple other tables were seated, served and left before we were done. Our waiter was young and slow, and everything he did took forever. As a positive, the wasabi crusted salmon was delicious as it has been every time I have ordered it. My husband's steak was originally burned according to the waiter and recooked which was the supposed long wait for our entrees. It was cooked to the right temperature when it arrived. Then when we ordered the bread pudding and four coffees for dessert, the coffee was brewed fresh (we could smell it), arrived somewhat warm but not hot, and about 10 minutes later our dessert arrived. This was around 20 minutes after we had originally ordered it...and they aren't starting from scratch making that bread pudding when you order it. (and with a title of "Blueberry Apricot Bread Pudding" it would be nice if I wasn't questioning halfway through if there were actually blueberries in it) I was certainly disappointed and do not expect to pay $80 for a meal with such terrible service. It will make me think twice about returning for dinner again which is unfortunate considering that prior to this experience I felt it was a solid place to eat in town. UPDATE: I submitted this review on The Local's website so management would know about our poor service. I received a reply the very next day thanking me for the feedback, ensuring they have addressed the problem so it would not happen again, and apologizing for our experience. Based on this I will definitely return again and hopefully it was just an isolated incident. I will update this from a 3 star rating later based on return visits. read more

When I'm craving a really good sandwich The Local is where I decide to go in the Lake Jackson area. They have fantastic sandwiches; I would recommend any one of them! This place also has a wonderful patio to enjoy a beautiful Texas spring or fall afternoon! The shop inside also has a small area with interesting nik-naks for sale at good prices. So go visit The Local! Order a sandwich, browse the store, and enjoy a wonderful meal on the patio or in the dining area! read more

When looking for somewhere quality to eat in Lake Jackson 100% of the time I will suggest The Local first. There aren't many places in the area that offer the variety and mature palette The Local does. The staff is always friendly & knowledgeable of the menu & the daily specials are usually to die for. If you're a virgin to the place I highly suggest "The Jefferson" (it's like thanksgiving dinner in every bite) "The Spinach salad w/ fried chicken" (I dunno what they do the chicken but it's to die for when they fry it) and the "California wrap" fantastic for all the vegetarians or anyone shooting for a light filling lunch out there (its so well made you won't realize there isn't meat in it). Make sure to get a Sweetie cookie or 2 when you're there - you won't regret it. Food is good but over priced. Really good hamburger, but the fries are separate. Staff is always friendly just the prices are more in line with a fancier restaurant. We do eat here a few times a year. Would eat there more if they would bring the prices down. read more

Went for dinner a few weeks ago and was extremely disappointed with the quality of the food. I decided to splurge after a long day at work and ordered the wasabi crusted salmon which is one of the pricier items on the menu. The salmon was extremely bland, with no indication of even a hint of wasabi. For all I know they used panko. My mother, who accompanied me to dinner, ordered the fried chicken salad and was also equally as disappointed with her dish. Her lettuce was soggy and wilted with only a few pieces of chicken. This restaurant has gone downhill. We visited about 6 months ago for dinner and had a completely different experience (in fact my mother even ordered the same dish). We will not return. read more

Stopped here on Friday night while driving through LJ. I was pleasantly surprised at the menu options. I expected an asstmt of soups, salads, sandwiches, maybe some pasta dishes. But the menu is much more extensive on weekend nights, apparently. And the food is freshly prepared, and presentation rivals any five star upscale restaurant. Not to begrudge LJ of its opportunity to claim a big city type foodie establishment, but this place doesn't seem appropriately located! Sure, stay in LJ, but move a little out in the open! The desserts are very good! Anything in the dessert section is a win, sweeties, dolly bars, chocolate cheesecake, cookies. They are all very good options. I've been for lunch a few times and the food is good. I went for dinner last week and the food was great, but the service was terrible. Our waitress brought us our drinks and took our order. She was never to be seen again until our food came out about an hour later. An alarm kept beeping every 10 seconds so we asked to move. It was very annoying. The waiter we flagged down about this seemed clueless. The servers need some more training for dinner service. read more

I've been to this area four times now, both times for diving at Mammoth Lake (scuba park). Usually I'll stay from Thursday night to Sunday morning and food has always been the biggest detraction. Unless I want fast food or some moderately large chains, I haven't found too many good places to eat! This time, with a slightly larger group, we opted to try out The Local for some nicer dining. We walked in at 8:50 and were pleasantly greeted and seated immediately, despite being close to closing. It was a very low key place with a homey feel. The pastries looked amazing. I got the burger. The patty was nothing to write home about, but the bun was so very delicious. I would certainly get it again. My friend got the Cajun Sausage and Penne meal (can't recall the exact name) and as someone from Louisiana, he gave it high marks. My girlfriend got the balsamic roasted chicken and was very impressed. The service was quick and attentive, but without putting pressure on us to leave and also not making us feel forgotten about. The tea was delicious, though we had to ask for sweetener and it was brought on a plate with four sweet and low packets for two teas. That may be because of the late hour, though. For the chicken and the burger, the meal was just about $30. I was more than happy to pay that for some nice atmosphere, service and some of the best food I've had in the area. Well worth stopping by. If the hotel didn't have a free breakfast, I'd certainly go back for some breakfast - based on the pastries and the bun, it must be fantastic. I will certainly remember this place next year! Very, very nice place to be, very clean very welcoming. The patio looked very nice, though it was dipping into the low 60s and we were not dressed for anything below 80. I would be ok with paying that because it is a local establishment and I like to support those businesses; however, the service is unacceptable. This is probably my favorite restaurant in Lake Jackson. It's a nice clean place and the food is consistently good. I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 because it's a little pricy and the children's menu could use a little help. If you don't have the kids and you want to treat yourself to a drink, try a lemon drop. My sandwich was something I've never encountered before with a Reuben, dry, almost cheese and dressing free and the first time I've ever had absolutely tasteless sauerkraut. The potato salad was outstanding. However the baked goods I got, lemon bar and a chocolate croissant were marginal at best. The lemon bars tasted like bottled lemon juice and the chocolate in the croissant was minimal. However if you're not expecting chocolate it was a good croissant. The food at the Local is great, but WAY over priced. I shouldn't have to pay over $30 for a sandwich, fries, and a drink for two, at a lunch place. They charge for every little thing separately, including water. The management at this place is terrible. One manager, who I believe is the owner, listened to complaints from a customer, and then dismissed and laughed about the customer behind her back. I see this as unacceptable. This year I relocated to Lake Jackson. This has been my favorite restaurant. I eat 2 to 3 times a week. Love the patio, it's really wonderful. Today, I went for a meal and I could hear the music from the patio when I got out of the car, in the parking lot across the street. Its usually very soft. Perceptible but not overbearing. You don't have to yell to be heard with the people at your table. When I went in to place my order I told them the music was really loud and it would be nice if they would turn it down. I went outside to wait for my order about 10 minutes later I went back inside and asked them if they would please turn the music down it was really loud on the patio. After another few minutes I went back inside a second time and switched my order to go. Told them that I was switching my order to go due to loud music outside. She ignored me. We were the only patrons out there, and it was just too loud. That it had never been this loud before but it was actually loud enough to be disruptive. Both women ignored me didn't say anything. They packed my food in a to go and put it in front of my face and I left the restaurant. As a regular there that's really sad to me. I don't know quite how to express my disappointment other than to no longer give them my business. read more
