I've eaten here a few times. It's a solid lunch place. I usually get some type of sandwich; most recently I ordered the BLT. It was good but nothing special. The fruit cup on the side is very small. My mom had a wrap which looked good. They also have the Zapps chip brand which is really good. The patio is a fun place to sit for lunch during nice weather too. I was in town today for lunch and of course I turned to Yelp to find somewhere for lunch that was highly rated. I was in a different town for lunch and I wanted something locally owned and highly rated. I chose The Local based partially on name, but also because it was well rated. Parking was interesting there at downtown Lake Jackson. The streets are lined with parking spots, so there was plenty of parking during lunch. Outside there's a nice fountain and plenty of patio seating that was pretty welcoming. Inside - there's giant chalkboards loaded with menu items, a pastry case, and a couple of registers. I was greeted quickly and warmly. After paying they hand you a buzzer to let you know that your food is ordered. One thing to point out - she didn't actually point me in the direction of the soda/tea area or the area where you pick up food. The person in front of me headed left, so I did as well. Luckily that was the right choice. Walked right up to the soda machine and the ice wasn't working. No sign or anything. I turned around to find a staff member and that's when I noticed the clear plastic tub of ice on the counter, with a silver scoop inside. I'm not sure how many people actually put their hands on the scoop, but it was down inside the tub, contaminating the ice. Tea was brewing, so I went ahead and got Dr. Pepper, but the carbonation or syrup was off. Poured it out and went for something else. Same thing. So I got iced tea - wasn't bad iced tea - but the sugar was no where to be found. It was back near the register. I was pretty annoyed at this point - but I was pleasently surprised that my food came out FAST. The bun was toasted and piled with everything (and I didn't think to say no onion/tomato, but she didn't ask either), which is fine, I just took off what I didn't want. The burger itself was good, if just a tiny bit chewy/rubbery - it had the shape of a pre-formed, frozen patty. I'm spoiled by many, many options in Houston, but it wasn't terrible. I just finished having lunch here.the place was full. I have to wonder why though. The place was very clean and the atmosphere was pleasant. You order at a counter and wait to retrieve your food. I ordered the half sandwich and small salad combo. It came with a very small cup of fruit. About 5 chunks. The sandwich was on wheat bread with "dude ham" a small amount of mayo and deli mustard lettuce and chopped tomatoes. At almost $10 you would think it would be one of the better sandwiches in town. Not so. Lake Jackson is a small town that doesn't justify Houston prices. When I go out to eat I expect something I couldn't make at home. my suggestion if you want a sandwich is save your money and go to subway at least there you will get a foot long for half the price as the local. This is a nice classy place with a vibrant feel. The menu may need to be updated so much to choose from but they have excellent food. The service is great oh the baked goods to die for. Fantastic choice for a mid-day meal. However, they perform poorly with breakfast and dinner. The menu options are basic and forgettable at best. The Local is our go-to spot for lots of different occasions - meet friends for a casual lunch, listen to live music on the weekends, pick-up take-out items or meal or just chill on their patio with great frozen margaritas and burgers. The food is great and the Hurricane is the best in town. In my opinion, the dinner menu trumps the lunch offerings! I highly recommend the KC Pork Chops and Penne Pasta Alfredo. Although I'd love to give a 5 star rating, I can't because the service lately has been incredibly slow. I work in the area but do not live here, so I asked around to find some unique bakery to get my son a variety of small desserts for his birthday versus a regular birthday cake. The Local came up as an option from multiple people, so I decided to try it. I did get a box of treats (3 cookies Bluebeery Lemon muffin, Peanut Butter Pie slice, Choc Croissant) totalling $25.71. While some of the treats were ok, I through the peanut butter pie in the trash; I make a much better PB pie. The other stuff, ehhhh. Maybe I just had different expectations, but I wish I would have just bought him a cake. Maybe they are better for entrees vs. sweets or maybe I am just spoiled to traditional bakeries (that do only baking / not entrees). Easily the best restaurant in town. Their lunch menu is delicious, I recommend the Jefferson (Turkey and cranberry). For dinner, their menu is exemplary. I've never had a dish that I would give less than four stars and their menu is diverse, so there's something for everyone. They have a delectable selection of desserts (the key lime pie is divine) and their sweeties are a local legend (pun intended). The atmosphere is lovely, the bathrooms spotless, and the waiters and waitresses are always top-notch in service and friendliness. My only complaint is that their hours are fairly limited. This genuine cafe kept on the top of the list in town for places to eat for some time but may now have you second guessing as the quality of dinner isn't what you pay for. Bread should be complimentary for those prices, but don't order it, it will have you waiting to eat it past your dinner course. If you go, I advise a lunch outside by the fountain with a signature treat, the sweetie cookie. Their lunch items are phenomenal and you'll want to try their unique take on potato salad. The staff is pretty efficient and it's always clean. Could use a little updating on the decor on the back half as it looks like it had in 2010. Not impressed at all! We came cause they "redid" the menu. Ordered spinach artichoke dip, tasted like all artichoke and no cheese. I ordered the fish tacos they were very bland! No flavor at all! The Local is one of Lake Jackson's trendiest Deli Style restaurants. The patio is quaint and perfect when the weather allows for outside dining. During the day the interior is low maintenance; food is served in baskets with plastic silverware and tables are uncovered for fast clean up. Prices are moderately high and service can be really slow sometimes, which in my personal experience has always been due to the large volume of take out combined with the lunch rush of those dining in the restaurant. The chef(s) have failed to fulfill my order on more than one occasion. I never know how long I should wait before going to the counter to see if there is a problem. At night they change the menu, dim the lights, add white table cloths, China and proper utensils. The pastry counter is always filled with delicious treats like Sweetie Cookies, Cheesecake, Cupcakes, etc... and often has a prepared meal or two waiting for someone to take home and pop in the oven. A couple of years ago a full bar and extra seating was added. When I go to The Local I feel like I am back in Austin. PS... They also serve breakfast! I don't have one favorite dish here, they have a lot of good choices. I cut them some slack on my last visit by not asking for the manager, but not filling my lunch order was truly unacceptable. A bland "I'm sorry" from the counter staff is not enough in a situation like this. She told the chef "you returned another unfilled ticket." I will be back but this type service means I can't come as often due to my work schedule and if this is happening to multiple people then ultimately it is costing the restaurant money.
