I have been to this salon three times and not once has my appointment been taken on time, even when I had the first appointment of the day. They always give you the same line about how "you're welcome to go down the street for coffee or juice while you wait." It's obvious they're used to doing to this to people. The parking is metered only, so this is super annoying. At my last salon, they would literally go out to the meter and refill it for you when you were doing a long process (if my stylist hadn't relocated to NYC, I would have stayed there forever). The first guy who cut my hair spent the whole time getting his scissors stuck in a hoop earring on a new piercing, to the point that it was throbbing when I left. I have 8 piercings in my ears and this has never happened. Even though the cut was good, I changed stylists. Next: I'm a woman with short hair. I've had two visits with the new stylist, and both times she made comments about gender, saying something "masculine" or "hyper androgynous" would suit me. And she's only ever used male references to describe what my look should be. It feels really weird to have a stranger tell you that you're androgynous or masculine or feminine. Not ask you if that's your style, but just assume that short hair = masculine woman. On top of that, she gave me the literal worst haircut I have ever had. After she cut my hair pixie short (ie would dry in 5 minutes under a blow dryer), this stylist sat me in a dryer chair for almost 30 minutes. She claimed that this was to "add texture" to my straight hair, which makes no sense to me and had zero effect at all. Plus, the entire time I'm stuck under this dryer, I can see her taking another client, which makes me think the style thing was BS and that she just double-booked herself. Plus, the whole time, I'm constantly watching the clock because I'm at a meter. I eventually just took the dryer off my own head because it was burning hot and tried to get someone's attention so I could let them know this was weird. When she finally got me in the chair again she apologized for "the extra few minutes" and blamed me, saying she "didn't think my hair would take so long to dry." Excuse me, I JUST WATCHED YOU cut someone else's hair! On top of a weird experience, this haircut is hideous. My friends have all commented on how bad it is and literally every time I catch my reflection I cringe. It doesn't style well, it sticks out in weird place, and is growing out worse instead of better. The bangs are choppy and do this weird upward dip in the middle so it looks like I did them myself. I'm all for an edgy look and am not afraid to try new things, but I have never been so self conscious in a haircut. My elementary students have even commented on how bad it is. I would come in for a fix, but I honestly don't want anyone in this salon touching my hair again. To be fair, I started here because a friend told me she loved this place and this stylist. I don't know what the discrepancy is--maybe she's not comfortable with short hair, maybe she can't get out from behind this weird image she has of me as a super masculine woman??? All I can say is that my friend swears by her and I've been swearing at her. read more

Allison Carroll is amazing! She's been doing my hair and makeup for 16 years so naturally, she had to be the one for my wedding last week. Allison gave some much needed attention to my hair with a trim, long layers, and balayage, 1 week before the wedding. She also did a trial run on my wedding updo, based on Pinterest pictures. On the day of the wedding, she came to my airbnb and provided airbrush makeup (including placement of individual falsies), making sure that I would not have an allergic reaction to the eyelash glue like at a previous wedding by another makeup artist. Hair and makeup took less than 2 hours and I was out the door! She frequently does weddings and special events so I was lucky to get on her schedule. Allison is also a great resource and brought along a team of hair and makeup artists (2 each) to help with the rest of the bridal party and family. In total, we had 4 bridesmaids, 3 mothers, and two other family members, in addition to myself, doing hair and makeup. We started at 6:30/7 AM, and were done by 10:30/11 AM. Allison did a great job coordinating with the other artists and creating a user friendly schedule so that everyone knew when and what service they were receiving. I'm always hesitant to leave stylist reviews immediately after a cut because it's very rare that my 'do will look anything remotely like it did the day of, but here I am: almost two weeks later and my curls are still doing what they did after Sarah waved her magic curl wand at me. Sarah took the time to listen and talk and answer really ridiculous questions (I'm a grown woman and still don't know how to "girl" properly), but once she went into the geometry of curls and how important a proper cut is, I knew she was legit. Now my "I think it's wavy but kind of curly but ugh it's frizzing again and doing that weird poof thing" hair has been transformed into a head of actual ringlets and I wish I found Sarah sooner because she is a wizard! read more

This was my first time at The Local Salon. My teenage daughter and I both had Brittany Laine. We are both extremely happy with how well she communicated with us, understood what we wanted, and nailed it perfectly! My daughter had very long hair and had 8 inches cut off, and donated. The short style Brittany gave her is just perfect. I have a very happy teenager who has taken like 768 selfies in the last hour! I asked for a purple ombre for my long brown hair. She did exactly that and it looks gorgeous. The salon itself is located in the heart of Noho, my favorite part of LA. It is clean, and comfortable. There were a few other stylists working today and I didn't have to overhear negative gossip or uncomfortable conversations. Thanks for the reply, but I have a couple of comments to make. First of all, it took a few days for it to really sink in about the extent to which my hair was damaged. As time went on and it seemed to get worse, I decided it was time to write a review. That happened to fall during the time of the quarantine. I'm not sure why you would shame me for raising my concerns during this time. My hair is damaged and I can do nothing about it, because I too am sitting at home, doing my part social distancing. I paid a lot of money (and gave a good tip) for my hair to be ruined, which, by the way, I did call and ask someone to fix...on my own dime. But then covid hit. Good thing for me, because my hair is part of my livelyhood. Regarding my original review. I don't think I was particularly mean. I mentioned that I had good experiences. I'll take responsibility for overlooking your policy on drying my hair, but curiously, I didn't have any miscommunication the two previous times I booked appointments. And I booked through the online system, not through your receptionist. So the defense of your receptionist was irrelevant. I didn't complain about her. Finally, there is the issue of your reviews in general. I noticed that they are all 5 stars with the exception of the handful of one and two stars, which always makes me take pause. Too much of a discrepancy. And your responses to those one and two star reviews are always very snarky with hardly an apology to be found, not taking any of the the responsibility. Located in the NoHo arts district, I've been going to this shop for over a year now and my usual hairstylist is Brittany! She's lovely and amazing with creating natural balayage, cuts, and overall color. All of the staff are incredibly warm and welcoming and the atmosphere is inviting as well. I've recommended them to a few friends who also have become regulars there as well. Parking on Magnolia is always tight so try parking around the corner on one of the side streets next to the Federal, that way you won't have to worry about the meter anyways! They have fair pricing and are great at keeping their clients informed, especially during these quarantine times. This Salon deserves all the five star reviews! Brittany has been doing my hair for over a year now and I have to say I am SO happy I found her and the Local on Yelp! She is great with both cut and color - and is open to any crazy idea I bring to her (and somehow makes it look better than I imagined.) She finds a way to keep my hair both fresh and modern, yet natural and timeless. Plus, she is just about the nicest person you will ever meet. I've had 2 appointments with Sarah and I feel like she has become my personal hair guru. I've been platinum blonde for about 2 years but took a short break to let my hair repair itself. However, getting back to blonde has been a chore and Sarah has really offered her expertise and time to making sure I look great. She knows which products to recommend, advises me on how to treat my hair, and she's a fellow murderino! Sarah is super personable, and an expert stylist. She takes great care to make sure my hair doesn't become too damaged from the processing and I always walk out of my appointments feeling great. Went to Sterling, this is the happiest I have been after getting my hair cut and colored in my life. She executed exactly what I had in my head and my hair even has some violet in the light that you can see not as well in the picture and I love it. She thinks about your eye and skin tone too as well as what will be easiest to manage over time and she recommended a great shampoo to help me with dandruff that I also got because the dry weather has me struggling. Seriously the best experience ever! I had a disaster for hair and Taylor really helped me out. The start of my horror story was that I had my friend's friend do my hair because she was unable to. I took her word that her friend knew what she was doing and it turned out that was not true. I had my hair bleached and long story short there was breakage; a lot of breakage. I was freaking out not knowing what to do and called several salons to ask what I could do. There was no answer for a majority of the ones I called until I tried The Local Salon. From the moment I called until the end of my process everyone was extremely helpful. Erin (not sure if I am spelling it right) was so helpful in answering all my questions. I explained to her my situation and said how bad it was, asking what I could do to make it better. She reassured me and made me feel like I could salvage the mess that was my hair so I booked an appointment for the next day. I was not sure who I had my appointment with until I looked at the email confirmation and saw the name Taylor. To put it simply Taylor is an absolute life saver and I am extremely grateful for her hair service. She was so kind, professional, and extremely knowledgeable about how to handle my hair. Taylor consulted and explained clearly every step she was doing to make sure I was okay with it. She even went over how to change my hair routine to best suit my hair in its current state and products that would be best for it. I am usually not great at expressing things other than saying thank you a bunch of times, so I figured to show my gratitude I would leave this review. I'd had the same hair dresser since I was 14 back home on the East coast, so when I moved out here, I was worried about finding someone to trust. Unfortunately, my first try didn't go so well and I was traumatized from both the results and the price. But! A couple weeks later, one of my best friends, Erinn was getting her hair done and suggested I come along to check out her spot, The Local Salon. Her hair dresser, Kayleigh, was kind enough to let me watch her work, and guys...the girl's got it. I found my spot. I've been there twice now and I've only grown to love this place more. Both times I've gotten my hair cut, colored, and styled by Kayleigh--aka, the hair WIZARD Aside from her being just an all-around kick ass lady, Kayleigh KNOWS hair. She is experienced, down to earth, and always on your team. And the best part about her--she doesn't lie. If you want something done and she knows it'll turn out funky, it'll be the next thing she says. She earns your trust immediately and always makes you feel heard and comfortable. The salon as a whole has a great vibe--very rustic chic. I find sometimes salons can get a little stuffy or pretentious, but here I always feel welcomed and included. I really wanted to love this salon; its in the NoHo arts district surrounded by cute cafes and shops, is so dang cute on the inside, and the receptionist was friendly but unfortunately the hair cut fell short of my expectations. I have curly hair and am very conscious about what works and what doesn't in terms of styling. I had a clear idea of what I wanted when I came in, but my stylist had other suggestions which is understandable since she as the professional knows what to do. I trusted her expertise but didn't end up with what I wanted. I asked her to please keep as much length as possible but to just thin out the heavy areas, which is something other stylists have been able to do. She said she needs to take off at least two inches, or else it wouldn't even be worth it to get my hair cut. I asked to get fringe cut so it would fall a certain way and frame my face to which she noted, "Yeah that's not possible with your hair unless you style it everyday" as if I was not aware that I have curly hair. I don't need my stylist to make conversation with me but I didn't appreciate the little comments that made me feel like I had no idea what I was talking about when I was making simple requests that other stylists have been able to accommodate. This place isn't cheap, so I think it's fair to try and give me a style similar to what I asked for. Ultimately I trusted her complete judgement and ended up with a good plain haircut, two and a half inches shorter, but I didn't leave the salon feeling like a rockstar which I think I should when I'm paying ~$80. The cut also had no longevity and in a month had grown out in that wonky triangular shape (curly hair people know what I mean) that was difficult to style, which is something I'm a stickler about avoiding. Overall, the salon is a very pretty picturesque place with beautiful employees and products and I got a good haircut, but I wish my stylist was more receptive and flexible to my requests. When I started coming to The Local for my haircuts, I was just looking for somewhere to go now that I was ready to graduate up from my $40 Rudy's Barbershop cuts, but I've never had such amazing service as I get at The Local. These guys go above and beyond-- and I've got 3 stories that prove it: 1. I'd only seen my stylist Taylor a few times, but after the third or so time I left my cell phone behind at the shop, and I didn't realize it until after I had left. Not only did Taylor notice & keep it safe for me, but she went on Facebook, found me & messaged me to let me know they had it. That's really not her job but she did it because she's kind. I saw the message and was able to get back to the shop just as they were closing & grab my phone. 2. I'd forgotten that the shop is closed on Mondays, so I swung by to pick up some new shampoo & conditioner. From the barred outside of the shop I could see Taylor and another woman stocking the shelves. They opened the door to tell me they were closed, but when they heard I just wanted to buy shampoo they actually let me in, opened up the register, and helped me select product...even though they were closed that day. I just thought that was really above and beyond customer service, and like always, they were incredibly kind and helpful. 3. I saw Taylor recently for a regular trim, and then went out of town for work. I realized my hair was still too dense (I didn't ask her to take out as much as I should have) but I was out of town for 2 weeks, so I couldn't get it corrected. When I got back to town, Taylor got me in as soon as she could, and even though the policy is to charge for a new cut (vs a correction) after 7 or so days, she still fixed me up without charging me. Another great thing about Taylor? She's friendly and up for chatting, but also reads the room and won't force you to talk if you're not in the mood for conversation. Also, she gives a damn good cut (I usually bring example photos). As far as other small details...there is a great frozen yogurt shop next door if you're trying to kill time until your appointment, and I never have trouble finding metered parking right on Lankershim (and staff will even run out and put another quarter in your meter if you're running low on time). All in all everyone who works here is incredibly nice and skilled, and if you're in the market for a new stylist, I highly recommend Taylor. read more

Sarah Chaney is great! My hair grows fast and I have a bunch of grays, so I've had to get my grays covered every 6ish weeks in the last few years. This time, I had gone TWELVE weeks without doing my roots because I was busy with school and money was tight. I saw Sarah for the first time last week and I think it was the best cover-up I've had. I told Sarah that I wanted my grays covered and she politely asked if I would also like to gloss my ends since they were getting pretty light. I explained to her that I was on a budget, so I could only afford my grays right now. She was very understanding and even went above and beyond by pulling some of the color from my roots to the rest of my hair as a sort of "fake gloss." But wait, there's more! I couldn't afford a blow dry, but Sarah blow dried my hair a little so I didn't leave dripping wet and did a couple sections in the front to see how the dye took. My grays were covered, but a little shimmery, which is what I'm used to when I get my grays covered elsewhere. I told her it looked fine, but she insisted it was not good enough and asked if I had time for her to redo it with a stronger dye. I felt bad having her redo something I thought was fine, but I took her up on the offer because it seemed to really bother her and I was curious to see if she could get rid of the shine from the grays. She did it! My grays are completely covered and you can't tell I've dyed my hair at all. Even after doing me the favor of giving me a fake gloss and taking the time to redo my roots, Sarah gave me a discount for the "inconvenience" though I felt none at all. She was super sweet the whole time, did not make me feel embarrassed about being on a budget, and if it bothered her that she spent two hours on a fairly inexpensive service, she didn't show it. WOW. Where to begin! The salon is wonderful. I called days before and made an appointment. The woman on the phone took my info. I'm so sorry I forgot her name, she was great. Anyway, I arrived early. Everyone there was so nice, warm...they didn't seem stressed out or overworked like some places of business (and retail in general) seem to be these days. They were busy in the good way...The staff are really nice. Some staff had really cool 'edgy' cuts and hair color. It felt like a real salon, not like a barber shop trying to be one! :) I'm older than 40 and sometimes places like this can be intimidating, not this place.... It was just right, so if you're over 40... CHECK THEM OUT! Miranda!!! Miranda was my cutter/stylist/whatever :) She was brilliant. She was a skilled hairstylist...you know how you can tell once they start cutting? Yes, Miranda was great. She got to be creative too because I went from outgrown-over-the-ears hair to a Modern Mullet! She loved cutting my hair and it showed when she was cutting it - and it shows now. Everyone's been complimenting me on my hair. It's been a long time since I've received that kind of attention and it feels great! :) My 23 year old daughter loved my hair so much, that we went back to the salon today, the day after my cut. I showed her around and although Miranda wasn't there, My daughter will definitely return for her cuts and colors!! I even bought some awesome product while there this morning. REF brand styling 'paste'. I can't say enough good things about The Local Salon... I'm recommending everyone get over there and support this local neighborhood shop. First of all, the vibe at this salon is incredible. They're like a family there, and the atmosphere is very joyful and chill. They sell great products and really focus on local talent with some specialty products at the front. My friend recommended Kayleigh to me, and is an absolute angel. She's so incredibly relatable, fun to talk to, and she genuinely cares about the person in her chair. I had always been so hesitant to go from my natural brunette to a full-on blond, and Kayleigh gave me the confidence to take the leap, and she made the transition so easy for me- making sure my hair remained healthy throughout. Kayleigh has given me the confidence to be bolder with my hair moving forward and the confidence that it's gonna look amazing with her magic touch. All of the other stylists I've interacted with are so personable and all the clientele always seem so happy. I've seen some incredible styles and colors walk in and out of the salon. read more

Had my first cut here on Saturday with Susannah. Booking the appointment over the phone the day before was very easy and smooth. Susannah was there and ready the second I walked in and gave me a great haircut with great conversation. Overall the vibe was fun and relaxed and I'll definitely be going back. Location wise, this place is also great: it's a block from the end of the red line, has a movie theater and a Chipotle across the street, and two coffee places next door. Super convenient. read more

Wow! I finally found an amazing hair salon!!! I got my hair done by Ritchie yesterday and had the most amazing experience. Coming into the salon, I had dry, damaged, and needed a color correction. When I left I received everything I expected and more! As soon as I walked into the salon I greeted and treated very well. I met Ritchie and he was super friendly and explained to me everything we should do to my hair. At times you find yourself in shock when you see what the stylist has done to you, but Ritchie explained everything! He did an amazing job on my cut and color !!! I wanted a warm brown and he did just that! Originally I had walked in with messed up copper hair, but he fixed that problem immediately !!! Go to Ritchie!! He's the BEST! read more
