I used to go to HAIRROIN - and they are excellent there - but I wanted a closer option in my 'hood. Hence - THE LOCAL SALON! I read reviews and chose my stylist based on her expertise with curly hair (Sarah). I figured she would know what kind of a short-ass cut would work for both straightness and curliness. And I was right! I brought in a variety of photos of styles I like (I'm talking SHORT, not quite pixie but near) - and she expertly chopped my locks into a beautiful little RAD cut. I love it and I love not having much hair to fix. She was extremely helpful with styling tips as well. Although, I can never do exactly what they say....but it still looks gooooooooooooooood. Also - the pricing was SUPER AFFORDABLE. And they have great products and overall very friendly and helpful staff. I highly recommend them. No color, by the way - just cut. read more

The facility is adorable, and always very clean, good location with parking options around (which can be impossible sometimes in LA!) I go to Brittany and she's great. On a personal level, she always remembers me and details of my life which makes for really easy conversation. On a professional level, she knows what she's doing! She is great with getting to the root of exactly what you want (whether it's cut or color) and delivers. She doesn't recommend upcharges that you don't need or pressure you into products, etc. I'm always pleased when I walk out of the Local Salon! I have been here once during the COVID-19 pandemic, and I felt completely safe. Things were sanitized promptly, everyone was masked and consistently using hand sanitizer, and there were not a bunch of people in there. I found The Local on Instagram shortly after I moved to LA two years ago. I started going to Brittany shortly after and oh my gosh. Brittany is amazing! I've never seen a color master like this girl! I genuinely look forward to my salon visits, and have never left disappointed. Brittany is an absolute gem, but every employee I've encountered has been welcoming and friendly. I had one of the worst experiences I have ever had getting my hair cut with Sarah Chaney. When I sat down I told Sarah I wanted the exact same cut I had just a trim is all I needed. I liked what I had gotten at another place. I came back to give Sarah another chance, as she had given me a bad haircut the last time I saw her. Mid cut I stopped her and told her I didn't want her to cut so much off and she had the audacity to tell me that she doesn't tell me how to do my job. I responded with, I do want my hair cut how I liked it. She continued to give me the cut she wanted to give me not the one I requested. I have never had anyone say anything like that to me before. Before I made an appointment with Amy my long, dry hair sat like a shapeless mop with split ends galore! Now, that honestly has completely changed; my hair looks great no matter what I do and caring for my hair has become effortless. I love my cut and so does everyone else- I've been inundated with compliments. She's a master for a reason! We briefly discussed the what the final look would be, and I was excited to get my hair chopped. I asked quite a few questions during the whole process of washing and cutting my hair, and I received informative answers. Amy explained the proper steps to leave washed hair feeling clean and healthy, and how to address frizz concerns for my wavy hair. At the end she gave suggestions for Davines products- which were a little pricey- but they managed to turn my previously straw-like hair into my current soft, shiny tresses. I have been going to the local salon for 2 years now. They have such a beautiful establishment with a kind, welcoming and talented staff. The talent of all of their stylists is out of this world! I absolutely loved my haircut and color, however I felt completely ripped off as I checked out. I was priced out over the phone before I went in for my appointment. She quoted me about $200-$250 for a cut and highlight. And, of course, I knew that there was a decent chance that the price would be a reasonable amount more dependent on what happened... however, I did not think it would be over twice as much. First, my stylist was late. That's okay, I made a very early appointment since it was my first time there to give myself ample time to get home in time for my plans that evening. When my stylist arrived, I went through what I wanted and we went about the appointment. During the first hour or so she gets a call that her next appointment canceled. She said something along the lines of "We'll thats a paycheck I'm missing out on. We'll just have to keep you here longer." I thought she meant it playfully as we were well into a pleasant conversation. Looking back, I think she used this extra time to give me "services" I didn't ask for or agree to the rates of and, in turn, charge me more. I was at the salon for over 6 hours and was running very late for an appointment I had with a company that ended up charging me a late-fee due to it. Mind you, not all this time was spend with her working on my hair. She often disappeared to chat or answer her cell phone. As I was pushing to get out the door, she quickly wrote down a note for the receptionist and said that she'd take care of me from there. The bill was $500. I found that absolutely absurd, however my next appointment was too important to miss. I made a comment to the receptionist (my stylist had already managed to slip away) that I would pay but would be calling to speak to someone about this and ran to my appointment. I did call and email but eventually gave up and moved on. However, I want to make sure to warn people that to be careful when coming here because you may end up getting charged for $500 for a cut and highlight if your artists next appointment gets canceled. [Update: After Rosie commented below, I sent her a copy of my receipt along with my notes and received no response. I emailed her and sent a message to her profile. Six or so months after the really poor service for almost $400, I decided to try again. I called to make an appointment to make sure that all the things I request done are noted; because if you schedule online, you might easily skip some items and end up with half-job just because they allocate the exact time for each thing you need done. The lady on the phone said it's all booked. However, when I arrived on the scheduled date, it seemed that they did not have me reserved at all...! There was also no one else to do anything, so I left. The hair stylist called to apologize and offered another time, though. Ahm...NO. I found the other place with the same service and half the price. Well, I guess they have very advanced online scheduling system but when it comes to schedule on the phone, they lack able staff. My hair is fine and curly, a very challenging combination. I'm going to be 50 years old this summer, and I find that my hair is changing. It's frizzier and there is less of it, and I've really been at a loss as to what to do. Two years ago, I got a really bad cut and had to go really short in order to fix it. I've been trying to grow it out since then, but it had gotten straggly and thin at the ends. I could only wear it in a ponytail or french twist but I was afraid to get my hair cut since the last stylist I had wouldn't listen to me and kept cutting my bangs. In the last six weeks, I went to three different salons to get a deep conditioning treatment (consultation) and none of them clicked with me. I read reviews for The Local Salon and decided that I couldn't wait any longer. My gray was growing out and my hair looked sad. I saw that Sarah did Deva cuts and got very excited. I've read about Deva cuts but I've never found a salon that does them. The salons always claim that their stylists are "great with curly hair," but they always cut my hair wet, which is not a Deva cut. Then when my hair dries and curls, the cut is unbalanced, shapeless and not great. So, this was my first Deva cut and I love it. I feel like Sarah understood what I wanted, which was crucial for me especially considering the last three stylists I've been to and the condition of my poor hair. She gave me a cut that looks great. It's fun and creative. It doesn't feel conservative or "old." She worked with my curls and they look well defined and happy. She covered my gray and we talked about how to go forward with my color in the future. My hair is dark brown and I'm concerned about it looking too dark as I get older, but when I've gone light before, it turns orange. I'm confident that Sarah will be able to navigate through all of that. She's great. Easy to talk to and she knows her stuff. I feel like she got me right away and she understood my hair anxiety, and never judged me or my hair. I made my next appointment before I left the salon. I usually wait and live with a new cut before I call back to make another appointment (or don't). I really liked the salon. It felt creative without being condescending or pretentious. Today I had my first experience at Local Salon. Richard, my stylist, is a gem! I came in with a crazy, unkept hair, gray roots, burned hair...He took his time to listen to me and took into consideration all the damage I had done and assessed my hair accordingly. I must say, he is intuitive, very knowledgeable and is very focused in his work. He is an expert in his field and I would recommend him to anyone who is looking for a change or needs to get back on track with healthy hair. I believe he is current and advanced in his technique. This salon is right down the block from me and I'm very happy to have found it. I scheduled a consultation with Sarah to find out how to leave my bleached hair in the past and it was so reassuring to hear the different options she had for me. She told me this was a process she recently went through herself so I automatically felt way more comfortable putting my trust in her. We agreed on a process and I scheduled a haircut with her for the following week. She gave me a lovely cut to frame my face and get rid of the damaged ends I had. I also have a ridiculous amount of hair and she didn't even bat an eye when she began to dry and style it for me. After I moved to LA several years ago I spent quite some time looking for a good hair stylist. I have a lot of hair, it is long and I like to dye it often in very different colors. When I decided I want platinum blonde, I got straight "no" from several stylists. Partial blond-ish highlights was maximum I was able to get... I understand why, it is a lot of work and I already had brown dye on my hair. It all changed when I found Kayleigh. She gave me exactly the color I wanted. Previously I was told that platinum blonde will destroy my hair, so I should just forget about it. Well, it didn't destroy my hair, it looked absolutely gorgeous. Yes, I had to spend a lot of time at home to take care of my hair, but it is expected when you having long bleached hair. After being blonde I decided I want red hair, now I am having purple balayage and every time I am satisfied with Kayleigh's work. Dealing with my hair and my ideas about it is not an easy task and I am happy I found stylist who is up for it. Also prices at The Local Salon are very reasonable, which is always nice. read more

I just found out that The Local Salon's owner, Rosie Fiore, and some of her staff, have moved to Burbank at the Burbank Town Center's Salon Republic. They had to close the North Hollywood location due to covid. I am so happy that she found a new home because I am so comfortable at The Local. They have a million tricks up their sleeves, so many styles and cuts and colors and techniques that are individualized to meet diverse needs. I always come away from The Local smiling and feeling good about myself, thanks to their sincerity and support. Plus, I get to zip through the mall, plus easy parking. Today was my first time at the Local Salon, and I couldn't be happier! Sarah is the absolute best. Before she started, she took the time to make sure she knew exactly what I wanted to do with my hair, and made me feel really confident and comfortable! Sarah is incredibly personable and made sure I had a great experience. Even with the Local having just reopened after quarantine, I couldn't have felt safer. We all wore masks, both she and I sanitized our hands, Sarah sanitized her whole station, and I even had my temperature checked. I haven't been this happy with a haircut in a long time, but Sarah did a fabulous job! In fact when I got home, my boyfriend told me and I'm not exaggerating "your hair looks beautiful and I especially like how the ends curve in and out. See I notice things!" I scheduled a last minute appointment at The Local Salon with Irena because I was dying to chop off some dead ends. I went on a Saturday afternoon so there was a bit of traffic. I would suggest getting there early to find a parking spot. The shop itself was adorable and busy, which I enjoyed. Irena was great and asked me exactly what I wanted while also making suggestions of her own. She was quick and got me out of there within an hour. There are a lot of horrible sufferings in the world and one which may top the list is finding a new salon/stylist. Okay, okay. This is a first world problem and I shouldn't complain but seriously, it can get scary! Cue the image of the woman screaming at Dracula in the original black and white film. Not only does loyalty come into play; but each stylist has a different level of experience, skills, preferred style, etc; so when you are stuck looking for a new one, then it takes government-level research to find the perfect salon. This is what led me to The Local Salon. I must preface this review stating the fact that I worked front desk at a salon so I am extra-picky and know what details to look for. These are things that the Average Joe may not notice but I am going to mention them, anyway. Having researched stylists at The Local Salon (the salon and stylists have instagram accounts); I decided on trying Kayleigh due to her being mentioned a record amount of times in reviews. Plus, I have pixie hair and let it be stated on record that NOT every stylist is skilled at female pixie cuts. I wish stylists were upfront about that, but I digress. It seemed like Kayleigh had experience with pixies so I called to make an appointment. The receptionist was kind and seemed quite excited that I was a new customer. At first I was a bit weary because they ask for a credit card on your account because if you are a no-show or cancel too late, they charge you $50. A bit harsh (although I am aware how no-shows can ruin a schedule from working in a salon). I was a little uncomfortable having my card on file but did what I had to do. Once the appointment was made, I received an email confirmation and then a reminder the day before. So let's get to the good stuff! The Local Salon is slightly confusing upon arrival because the front desk is off to the left side in a separate annex so I felt a little dumbfounded, at first. However, the salon is gorgeous! Exposed brickwork, a loft upstairs with more styling chairs, cement floors, beam work, etc... it feels straight out of Seattle downtown and it is a lovely environment. The AC could have been pumped a little higher (I was sweating under the robe during my cut) but seriously this salon is hip and cool. Even the shampoo chairs are plush and stylish. The Local Salon's design is A+, for sure. I was a bit taken back at first because the receptionist (Stirling?) was on the phone and didn't put the person on hold to welcome me or allow the client behind me to pay. At my salon, I had to ALWAYS transact a client in front of me even if the person on the phone was there first and in the middle of making an appointment. They ALWAYS get put on hold and clients should NEVER be waiting. Now, this may not be something a regular Yelper would notice but again, I worked at a salon. Despite this, Stirling was a doll otherwise AND Kayleigh happened to be nearby and welcomed me (she didn't know I was actually her client since this was the first time-- which shows she is great at greeting all clients). The actual cut went very well. The Local Salon follows the procedure of cut, wash, and then cut some more (I prefer to be washed first but let her do her thing). Kayleigh let me describe and consult with her first, describe my hair, show her photos, etc. She listened and didn't push any of her thoughts but offered suggestions. During the cut, I could tell she has a lot of expertise and is also a perfectionist. She will ask you if things are okay, so don't be worried that she will just hack away at your head! Her shampoo was also great because it comes with a head massage and it feels so good! Long story short, Kayleigh is skilled but also a great gal in general. How much does The Local Salon cost? I'll save you the research time because it is the same as all other salons in the area and is on-par with the going-rate baseline. Women's cuts start at $65 (mine was $75 for my pixie) and men's start at $40. This includes the shampoo and style after. All the salons in the area charge this much so The Local Salon isn't screwing you. Side notes: The Local Salon is mostly day-hour friendly (closing at 5 most days with 8 on Thursdays) so a bit difficult for 9-5'ers but is opened on weekends. They offer free bang trims for the ladies, which is fantastic! Online booking is also available so you can skip the phone call. And lastly: parking is a nightmare in the Arts District so give yourself ample time and have cash on hand for meters or lots (luckily, I walked here). Despite some of the discomforts or qualms (which I only notice from working at a salon and hence why I still gave 5 stars); The Local Salon is stylish but comfortable and the skills of stylists such as Kayleigh are top-notch. I have a LOT of curly hair that is a combination of Solange Knowles and Tracy Ellis-Ross type curls... I must have four different curl patterns and three different textures all trying to coexist harmoniously on my head. Some days it's all love and happiness and some days it's a total cage fight. I got a recommendation from someone to go to The Local to see a stylist there that specializes in my type of hair because she's a trained Deva stylist. I've had one Deva cut in my life (back in Boston) and it was the best cut I've ever had... the Deva cut I got at The Local... right up there with the WORST hack job I've ever received. ever. I explained before the scissors ever came near my curls just what I wanted, just which curls curled up tighter than others, which parts tended to zig-zag instead of curl, that I wanted the overall length to stay but needed some more layering in the back and that I wanted the hair around my face to be TRIMMED so that the long layers remained. My hair stylist said (and this is a direct quote) that I had nothing to worry about because "this is my jam." No. It's not... my type of hair is clearly NOT your jam. What I ended up with was something like a long afro on top of a mullet. In an attempt to "keep the overall length," she trimmed the back of my hair and then layered the hair on top far too much... so from the back there was this row of hair about two inches longer than the rest. The hair around my face has been cut so short that I essentially have a long afro. She cut my curls as if they all curled the same way, so now the curls that I pointed out curled up more than the rest CURL UP MORE THAN THE REST, which leaves me with sections of hair shorter than the rest... like the middle of the left side of my head... there's just a chunk of hair that shrinks up shorter than everything around it. I'm not naming the stylist because even though she really should never touch a head of hair like mine again, she is very sweet and nice. I believe she probably feels AWFUL for giving me a cut that left me in tears for days (and still enrages me every time I catch a glimpse of it in a mirror or window). I received a full refund, which is good... but it will be at least six to eight months before my hair grows out enough for a qualified stylist to fix the hacked up layers. read more

I have had this layered long hair for over 20 years now, so I have seen many different techniques when it comes to layering long hair. Kayleigh demonstrated this new technique that I've never seen before. The layers look so great. Although my hair is still long, but it looks so lively. My hair bounces when I walk! She noticed my grey hair and recommend a much healthy hair color alternatives that I can get at a specialty store. She also offer a complementary trim when my hair grows out. How sweet is that!! I went into the Local after I had seen a friend of mine get her hair done by Sarah. I'm always nervous about new people doing things with my hair, but Sarah was really personable and chill from the get go. I wanted my hair darker at the root and then silver at the tips, like an ombré. I was nervous my hair would be orange from the processing but Sarah walked me through step by step so I wasn't as anxious. I saw my hair after it had been bleached and it was such a pretty blonde i was almost in shock seeing myself that way, since I never had before. My hair turned out great! I went from a dishwater brownish color ( my natural) to a silver haired lady, I love it!! Sarah is a pro and she is a magical wizard. The salon had great energy and they are affordable. I hate giving up my secret weapon, but I have to support my amazing stylist Irena. She's kept my hair blonde and perfect for ages, and now she's working here at Local (thank god) which is easy for me to drive to. I have darkish brunette (aka boring) hair, and Irena has always kept me platinum without any yellow or orange streaks. Even when I forget to make an appointment for a month and my roots are super long, she always gets them to match the rest of my hair perfectly. As for my hair styles, I change it up every other month. I have short hair, and Irena works her magic with every single cut. I've literally said "Can you do a 60's asymmetrical pageboy sorta like Davey Jones but more like something twiggy would have?" and that's exactly what I got. I can't wait for her to do the 'Milla Jovovich from the movie Dirty Girl' style next time. This salon is awesome, I love the decor and brick walls, and it's super comfortable and no snobbiness from the staff. This is exactly what I want out of a salon: hip, aesthetically awesome, reasonably priced, and my hair is done right EVERY TIME. Just got done with my first appointment here and had to rush to Yelp to tell everyone about it (even though The Local salon didn't ask or bribe me to... don't you just hate it when businesses do that?) I have been searching for a person to do my hair (I guess we call it a "stylist" now?) for over 5 years since we moved from NYC to LA. I am not a picky person, but I just wasn't jiving with the folks I've been to so far. After a debacle with my appointment at the last salon, I was back to Yelp somewhat dashed and defeated. I found The Local salon and noted that they had online scheduling. Win! Made my appointments with ease and received several friendly reminders leading up to the day of the appointment. The energy at The Local salon is really great. I'm not normally a person who talks about "energy," so, for me to mention it, it's a big deal. It is immediately apparent that everyone there is happy to be there (both the customers and especially the stylists). I'm in HR, so I pick up on these things. There's nothing worse than sitting in a chair for 3 hours, picking up subtleties from your stylist or the other stylists that make you wonder if you wander into some sort of strange Stockholm syndrome situation or something equally unnerving. I scheduled my appointment online with Rosie mostly based on her availability within my schedule and not realizing that she is also the owner. Not to worry, she's so down to earth and incredibly friendly that I was not intimidated. :) I was coming to my appointment with a less than ideal hair situation: seriously grown out highlights and a cut that was less than precise. After a detailed and non-judgmental consult, we were on our way. Rosie was easy to talk with and the appointment went by so quickly. It's usually such drudgery to be "stuck" in the chair for so many hours for highlights, cut, blow dry, etc. Rosie went above and beyond to get my head back in order and I walked out looking like a million bucks! I'm headed out of town tomorrow and my normal stylist wasn't working and I didn't want to go to anyone else there! My friend had a good experience here so I went on the website and was most impressed with Sandra D. I got the only appt left with her and I'm glad I did. She did a very thorough wash. Very. This is so important for black hair. She FINGER COMBED my hair with the conditioner! Nobody ever does that. She didn't try to rush through my hair and just comb it which happens often. She took the same care with the blowout and flat iron. I got there at 5 and walked out at 645. The ONLY kinda complaint I have is the price. It was $95 before tip. $50 for blowout and $45 for the flat iron. I think it was so much because she's a master stylist. But you know what...I really needed my hair done and she was clutch! So I'll say she's expensive but not overpriced. I was compelled to leave a review because I always wonder if a salon can do black hair so I want other people to know. The Local Salon is super cute and everyone is really friendly. Besides my stylist, the best part about the salon is that there's no snobby hollywood tude there. My stylist is Irena, who is a superhero and her secret weapon is magic hands. Seriously, she effortlessly snips around my head with her scissors and razor and voila, within minutes, I feel amazing. I have thick and wavy hair and she knows just where to cut and how to texturize that doesn't make my chubby face seem so. As my hair grows out week by week, the style just gets better and better. She's fun to talk to and I've been a very happy client of hers for at least 6 years. Even just a quick trim does wonders. She's also a fantastic colorist. I like my hair to be low maintenance and Irena has accommodated that with both my cut and color. No styling is needed except for rubbing some product in and the way she colors can be retouched if I want it or just left alone if I don't want to color for awhile. I went here for LitFest 2013, not for a haircut so I can't really rate it on the hair. But the people there are fabulous, warm, and support literature/literacy. The place is clean, cool. The seats are padded and comfortable. read more
