Anytime I'm in Canada, I crave one thing I cannot get in the US: Montreal smoked meat. This is a smoked beef brisket (fatty or lean) that is flavorful but is not quite like either corned beef nor pastrami; IMHO, this is better than both, juicy, tender and really seasoned perfectly. The sandwich that the Local Kitchen served us (with an excellent mixed mescaline greens salad) was more of an entire sandwich experience. This experience is a crusty baguette, melted swiss cheese, a mustard, mayo, horseradish sauce and a good (not large) serving of smoked meat. The effect is not that you're tasting the meat so much as the entire warm, juicy, mildly spicy, crunchy, sandwich--truly food porn in your hand. Delicious. It was great and served with good speed by our friendly waitress. A nice find in a beautiful city. read more

Somewhat conflicted here as I had three very different experiences, courtesy of some average service. First afternoon was excellent, with one of those telepathic waitresses who pops into existence just as you're finishing your beer or finally deciding to get a snack. Second visit was a lot less satisfactory and I ended up walking after being left for 15 minutes without a drink. Something the shift boss should have spotted rather than hobnobbing with some favoured guests. Third visit was OK, though by then the heat was getting to the staff and things were a bit sluggish and lacking a spark. Good selection of beers and other drinks and the garden patio is a delight, with plenty of shade for the sun-shy. read more

What a terrible restaurant. I've always wanted to go because the location is amazing and there is always people eating on the small patio out front. Finally got to go for my birthday yesterday. All of the waitresses (I counted 3-4) were incredibly rude and acted horribly inconvenienced by our presence. After we were seated (inside-where it was empty save for a single man at the bar-perhaps this is why the patio always has people - they only put them outside), we waited 10 minutes before our waitress spoke to us. She didn't introduce herself or offer or give us water. THERE ARE NO GLUTEN-FREE OPTIONS on the menu. When my friend asked the waitress if there were any gluten free options perhaps on a different menu, the waitress rolled her eyes and asked "are you celiac?" To which my friend replied yes. The waitress then said "ya sorry we don't have anything...." And we just kind of sat there awkwardly until she rolled her eyes again sighed and said "I guess I could ask the cook if there's anything he can do" to which we replied yes please that would be great! 15 minutes later, she returned and pointed out 2 items (tuna tacos or steak tacos) and salads that could be gluten free. My friend selected the steak tacos but another 10 minutes later, the waitress returned again and said never mind the steak is marinated and so you can only have the tuna tacos or salad. She said that they would "discount" the salad that my friend ended up ordering because of all the inconvenience. Honestly, the food was good. The fries were identical to McDonald's fries which was disgusting but the club wrap was good. However, it was twice the price of an identical wrap elsewhere. After we got our food (from a different waitress) we never saw the original waitress again. No one came to check on us and after finishing our food and sitting around for awhile we ended up bringing our plate downstairs to ask for a go box and the bill. After all that, as we walked away checking the bill we discovered that the salad was not discounted at all. How in the world can a restaurant possibly have ZERO options for persons with celiac in 2021? The staff was awful. The menu was unaccommodating. The food was greatly overpriced. The atmosphere was off putting. And the entire experience was terrible. I will never return to The Local, and highly recommend you don't let your day get ruined by going there either. read more

This restaurant is situated across from the harbor. My family and I were approaching this street looking for a place to eat. The Local Kitchen has an outdoor patio area where a lot of people seemed to be enjoying their food and one's company. One of the biggest indicators for me in choosing a restaurant is how crowded the place is, and by the looks of The Local Kitchen, this place was a good choice. We look at the prices, and they weren't bad! Ranged from around 10-20 dollars for an entree. We tell the hostess lady that we would like a table for 4, and she gave us the option to eat inside or outside. It was at that time of day where it started to get chilly, so we opted to eat indoors. We walk inside, and Oh my god, this place looks kinda dingy and dark from the inside. To get to the dining area, we had to pass the bar, which seemed kind of strange to me, but I guess that's okay since Canada's legal drinking age is lower than the United States. Our waitress was this beautiful asian woman. She was really welcoming and friendly. We ask the special of the day, and for that day, it was pork ribs. My mom got that, My cousin and I chose the seafood linguini, and my aunt picked the salmon sandwich. We also got lettuce wraps for our appetizer . The lettuce wraps were good, The filling had pork and some spices. My mom's pork ribs were so tender that the meat just slid off the bone when attempting to eat it. My seafood linguini was okay, not great but not bad. The sauce was pretty good, but a little under seasoned. I think the reason why this place wasn't a 4 star, was because of the service. Although the Asian Waitress was super friendly when we saw her, she was mostly never to be found. My god, I think I asked her for a refill of water 2 times, but she failed to come back. So that was when I asked the hostess (FROM OUTSIDE) if she could get us waters. REALLY?? Do i really gotta go outside just to get water. Rediculous. Whatever, this place overall was like the food, okay, not great but not bad. I would consider going back, because the prices were very affordable =) read more

The atmosphere is great, lots of young people on the Thursday night. We went to eat and drink. The service was fast, a bit of wait but not too much. I ordered a chicken burger with mac and cheese. The burger was very good, with a nice cheese all over and a proper chicken piece. The Mac and cheese was good with a nice cheese all over and the pasta cook exactly has it should. The prices for alcohol are a bit expensive and the food is not the cheapest one either compared to similar places. The local is well situated next to clubs, harbour and other bars. I really LOVE the patio of this place! It has so many flowers! It really makes the ambiance nice to be surrounded by beautiful plants! The location on Wharf St. is perfect for a busy evening out! We ordered nachos, cod burger, and tuna tacos to share. All were really delicious. Our server joked with us and gave great recommendations on what to eat there because this was our first time. We had a really good time chilling and joking and enjoying out evening. We were really full by the end of it too. Which is always a plus. The portions were really good! It also looks like this place turns into kind of a nightclub on the inside after dinnertime. The music gets pretty loud and all the young people come out to play. The Local is a tourist hot spot and as a local I had actually never been until very recently. The Local is a great place to go for a pint and a burger or to enjoy their very large (and very crowded) patio right across the street from the water. As for their food I would have to say that it is what you would expect from a gastro pub and being vegetarian they only had one or two options. I had the veggie burger and like most places made a mushroom burger lacking in flavour and crunch. The garlic fries however were very good! Would I go back, probably not. read more

The only thing going for this place is the location and patio. I went there with a group if friends on a weekday night. The place was full but not busy. The servers are generally helpful; however my rating is based on the following events: 1) I was served the wrong beer. I ordered an Analog Kolsch and they gave me a Molson Canadian. When I asked for a repour the server challenged me my request. Trust me, when it comes to beer, I know the difference between craft and mass-produced swill! She eventually complied with my ask. 2) Our food was meh. The fish tacos and artichoke dip were ok, but the rest of our order was burnt. The wings and chicken burger were both either left in the deep fryer too long or the oil needs to be changed. The toast on the club sandwich was nearly black. 3) I got food poisoning. I was the only person who ordered a chicken burger with salad, and the next morning I was very ill. That was the only thing I ate that evening so I can only assumed it was something in the salad or the sauce for the burger. Lovely flowers surrounded us and located right by the water, made it such a good time. They also have seating inside along with a bar. They have really good drinks here along with the food. We ordered the Pancetta chicken burger w/fries and Smoked meat sandwich w/salad. Presentation was really nice and served on a wooden board. The chicken burger was moist and not dry at all. Buns were perfect and tasted fresh. Chicken was meaty and perfectly fit in between the bun and ate without making a mess. The fries were crispy and not oily at all. Smoked meat sandwich had a very unique taste. The meat was good protein and the sauce inside complemented it well. Salad was just like any other salad and I had a vinaigrette with it. There was also a lot of good items on the menu that looked appetizing and will have to try some more next time I come. Service was very friendly and took care of everything. The price is high in my opinion. The type of foods and portions weren't that big for the pricing listed. Despite the prices, it was worth it and still delicious. When I paid with a card, they brought the card machine to me and just paid at the table. Overall it was a perfect day from the weather, ambiance, service, food, and drinks. Let's recap my "Local Kitchen Experience" .... after Ghostly Walk tour in beautiful Victoria, My Mom and I popped into the Local Kitchen for a late-supper mixed with a late night snack. We loved that this place had no line - no cover and seated us immediately! We were able to tuck ourselves into a corner and enjoy our little gathering. Server was good - asked all the questions - came around when she needed to but didn't overly pester us with little "check ins" that were overdone. What made this place such a beauty?...... The fact that two of us "beer 'n dined" on their nachos for that meal .... breakfast the next day AND lunch the next days. Holy Smokeroos - this was a Nacho Lover's heaven. Heaped high high high up with all the topping it should x 100. Every single nacho was POWER Nacho. No exaggerations ... every nacho was smothered in cheese. Delicious [yes that was delicious with a capital "D"]. If you're not in love with olives you should probably let them know to go easy on them.... I was wandering around Wharf Street with my stepdad the other day, and we decided to stop here and eat lunch due to the nice outdoor seating and the views of the harbour. To start with, the service is pretty consistently fabulous and I'm always a sucker for hot waitresses/hostesses. Last time around, I ordered the chicken tandoori wrap, but I decided to be less adventurous and had a garden chicken burger along with a couple of caesars. Overall, the food was pretty decent, but the main reason this restaurant will never get a higher rating from me is that everything is just completely overpriced. This is now on my list of must visit places in Victoria. Went back for a second visit and was not disappointed, ribs fell of the bone and the sauce had just a hint of curry which was nice. So, I call the waiter to correct the order. - Excuse me, but these are not buffalo wings. - We don't have buffalo wings. - What do you mean? Did you run out of them? - No, we haven't been serving buffalo wings for a while. I brought you honey bbq wings. - Why didn't you tell me when I was ordering and then substituted without asking me? - Oh, if you want I can bring hot sauce for you. - Huh? Really great atmosphere on a Friday night when we stopped by. Waitresses were welcoming and great drinks on top of that. Main issue came with the food, besides the Brussel Sprout app which was amazing, the meat was dry and the the salads a tad boring. Over all not upset, especially for the price. The Local is set right in the middle of the city of Victoria. The vibe and atmosphere was great and the customer service was superb. It's nice to hit up a restaurant like this in Canada because it's so different and new compared to Seattle. My family ordered the Berry Mojito, Draft Beer and Bloody Mary which were all very tasty. The Berry Mojito and Bloody Mary was made so well that you couldn't tell there was any alcohol in it The food was just as good as the drinks too. I recommend ordering the nachos and seafood pasta. Pricing here wasn't too bad and everything was very clean. If you want a casual place to eat at in the heart of Victoria-- I suggest eating here!
