Update: Greg invited us back with the promise of a dramatic change in our dining experience. Although Greg couldn't be there the evening we rescheduled, we enjoyed a dramatically different experience from the one in August. Michael was our server and the next time we go back, we will request to be seated in his station. He was friendly, attentive and an all around nice guy. We started with the shrimp and crabcakes, they were super yummy with an aoli. Our meal was so much better than before, my husband had the Prime Ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. I had the diver scallops, they were just right. Everything about the evening was as we were hoping. I came to Black Butte on a family trip and had dinner here one night. Overall I (and the rest of my family) was really happy with the meal. Everything was pretty delicious and was plated nicely. I had sea bass that sat on top of a curry sauce. We also opted for the sower dough chocolate cake which was really good. You would never know that it was sower dough. Aside from the food the view really deserves 5 stars. As you eat you look out at such a beautiful vista. We saw some deer frolicking at sundown which is just awesome. read more

Michael was an excellent server who gave our party of 11 and enjoyable evening of delicious food and expert service. Knowledgeable and witty, Michael helped us choose excellent food that each of us was pleased with. Food was brought in a timely manner and wine pairings were well considered. At the end, Michael arranged a group photograph of our three different families having a great time together. The setting is spectacular with floor to ceiling windows that look out onto the famous BBR meadow ringed by three volcanoes. I had the king salmon, which was expertly prepared. It was an ample portion, and after a full day of skiing, I appreciated the big plate of deliciousness. read more

Went to The Lodge for an anniversary dinner with my husband and had a wonderful experience. Of course the view is gorgeous but the service and food were excellent as well. The calamari appetizer was a delicate and well balanced plate (actually was my favorite item we ordered). Grilled romaine salad was equally tasty. The chicken entree was a little sweet for my taste (it would have been nice for the menu to mention the sauce was more sweet than savory). My mixed drink was well balanced. Our server was welcoming, knowledgeable, and prompt. Drinks, bread, appetizer, salad, and entree all came out with perfect timing in between each new plate. 2 drinks, appetizer, and shared salad and entree totaled $65. Both my husband and I were perfectly satisfied by the end of our meal. I feel my time at The Lodge was worth the price and I look forward to my next visit. read more

Hard to complain when you're looking at that view, and for the most part we were very happy. Would have liked a little more variety on the menu but I was very impressed with my Elk dinner. My guy was not quite as happy with his tenderloin, which was overlooked and didn't have a lot of flavor. Everything was pretty expensive. Dessert was pretty basic but yummy. My husband and I went to the Lodge @ Black Butte Ranch. The scallops were delicious and I also had the pub Mac And Cheese with shrimp. The whole meal was scrumptious! Ambiance was poor (hadn't turned on music when we arrived at 5:30pm), server was young and green and food was mediocre. Majority of our 5 meals was decent but my salmon was way over salted. I mentioned to the server that I didn't want to take home the 3/4 salmon left on my plate because it was so salty it was almost inedible and he simply smiled and charged us anyway. All good ... family had a nice time but they sure don't make the experience worth the amount you pay. read more

This is an updated review on the Lodge Aspen Lounge. We prefer the casual dining at the Lounge than to the restaurant below. Service has improved. Last week I had a great Club sandwich; it had a Ranch twist to included thick bacon, tasty green tomato slices and a generous portion of lightly smoked salmon. The serving was large enough to share. I'll add this to one of my Ranch favorites. One minor gripe: children now are allowed in the bar/lounge after 7PM. This visit there was an unruly group of kids in the side seating area. I don't mined kids around, but if parents are going to take their children out for a meal, they need to teach them some manners. read more

Went in here with my family the other night and had a very nice experience. Very good food and service (Paul?). The pace of the evening was nice and we spent a couple of hours (with two teenagers), but it didn't seem like a long time at all. There was a nice sized menu, with a little something for everyone. One of my daughters had fish and chips off of the kid's menu, and it was quite good. Good appetizers and desserts, too. We'll definitely go back. read more

Ya know, just because there isn't a lot of competition in the area, and you have a built in clientele, doesn't mean you should serve over priced and under inspired food. The lodge is very pretty, with nice views, and the food really sounded good- they are trying to be modern and fresh with creative and local ingredients. However, the execution was lacking. Descriptions like peach salad with white chocolate vinaigrette and caramelized onion puree sound so nice, the salad tasted flat and non balanced. Same was true for entrees. I always feel terrible giving a bad review, but it isn't cheap- dinner for 4 was 300.00- so I feel a responsibility to let people know in case they want to spend their hard earned dollars on truly amazing food. read more

I was last here in 2001 - a long time for a decent review, but I remember this - the steak was huge and delicious, and I was in a dining room with expansive, beautiful views of green lawns, a lake and the Three Sisters, snowcapped and beautiful as the sun was setting. Service was very poor..waited over 15 minutes to order a drink and again when it was empty. The shrimp was good and halibut was average. Looks like there is a difference of opinion as to whether the restaurant should be the Cheesecake Factory or a decent restaurant. Portions are fine for a restaurant serving good food. They changed chefs two years ago, and it went from be the 1980's family restaurant serving Mud Pie to having Elk, wild salmon, etc. I think it improved considerably, though the shift in menu was dramatic as noted by those who expected family faire. The food is very good, but priced more like a metro area restaurant than you might expect for Sisters. Overall, it has among the best views you can imagine and good but not outstanding food (using San Francisco restaurant standards). If you use Zagat, you'd see it as 24 food, 22 service (get a professional waiter, not one of the seasonal staff) and 28 for the view. Entrees are 25-34 dollars, appetizers 8-12. Ask for the bar menu if you want the view without the prices. The wine list is ok but not inspirational. read more

Nice location + good food - terrible staff = not worth it! The restaurant staff made me never want to eat at the restaurant ever again. Go into Sisters, where they will treat you well and appreciate your business. I really enjoyed Black Butte Ranch and recommend visting everywhere but the Lodge restaurant. I found the staff to be rude and unhelpful with TERRIBLE attitudes. We thought our first interaction was a fluke, but we were very wrong when we tried the restaurant again. On more than one occasion with more than one family member, the restuarant receptionist and manager acted completely put out to help us in any way. Don't even bother trying to talk to the manager, Joy, who was the worst of all and clearly set the tone for the restaurant. The only highlight was our server Raquel. read more

We arrived just before they closed for lunch. We were greeted with a smile and offered the best seats in the house...oh, what a view! Our service was excellent during our stay. Our group ordered everything from soup and salad to Lamb. We had no complaints! Our drinks we refilled regularly and we were never rushed. The overall experience here was good; however the restaurant was very cold. We had to put our jackets on to make it bearable. Menu was rather eclectic and pricey...I enjoyed my burger, but the others thought meh. The service was EXCELLENT from the hostess, to busboy to the server, Paul. All very personable and helpful. Just had the Best dinner tonight. It had been years since eatting here. Michael, the server, still here and also the greatest. He always remembers us. Loved new menu options. Very delicious meal at The Lodge. Pleased that the Lodge has integrated the menu from Aspen Lounge and the main dining room to offer lower-priced choices. The big picture: You can't beat the view. Service is very attentive. And the menu has options for light and hearty eaters. The vibe is what we'd call "relaxed upscale". You are dining in a Lodge...and you're in the mountains...so it's not too fancy by any means. The details: We've been coming to Black Butte Ranch since the 1970s! And this was the first time we'd dined at the Lodge in several years. It was terrific. We had a 4 adults and two small children in our group. All were happy. There are 2 parts to the menu: the all day menu and the weekly dinner specials. It's a good mix. The all day menu covers all the protein bases and has options for vegetarian eaters. The specials portion ups the gourmet factor with at least 3 appetizer additions and 4 entrees. Our healthy eater ordered the grilled vegetable appetizer, an entree salad with perfectly cooked northwest salmon and a side of Brussels sprouts. All very good. What we all really noticed were details. For example, the calamari appetizer came with sliced fennel and farm greens. Nice surprise. Super good. The jumbo prawn appetizer was flavorful and well presented as well. Steak, fish and chips, starter salads, and a burger were also ordered. Portions were generous especially for the starter salads. We also like that extra veggies and starches can be ordered on the side. The rosemary bread is another extra touch that is well done. The only item that received mixed reviews was the "shrimp toasts" -- We liked the spice, but some of the group found it salty. Additionally, we found it odd that the starter salads came in big bowls, while the entree salad was on a somewhat small plate. The entree salads should be served in a big bowl and should look bigger than the starter salads. We recommend dining here. This was the best meal we have had here in years. Entrees are $15-$35. Sides are $7. Appetizers are $10-$15. It can add up fast. read more

I have never been as disrespected or appalled by how poorly treated I was by staff. My family has been owners on the ranch for over 30 years and it is truly a disappointment. Black butte should be embarrassed to employ such horrible people. Not only were my friends and I denied service we were accused of things we didn't do and the staff were uninterested in hearing our side. I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone and I hope black butte seriously starts to make better choices in their hiring. read more

I should have looked at Yelp instead of UrbanSpoon because Yelp is much more accurate. I took my friend to The Lodge for his b-day dinner, we wanted to try a place we hadn't been and make it special. Though I liked my dinner (pork tenderloin), he ordered the heinous Halibut. The service was horrrrrible. Our waiter seemed engaged and friendly at first but basically neglected us once our meals were served. I had to ask the water guy for a desert menu and almost had to ask him for our check. The ONE thing this place has going for it is the location, gorgeous! Oh, and the chocolate cake desert, yum. But you don't have to drive so far out of Bend for great views and good cake, just sayin. read more

We have been ranch owners now for over 30 years and enjoyed this restaurant very much up until about the last four years and it has gone down so fast in regards to service level and quantity of food for the price. This last experience eating at the lodge we had guest from out of town and placed our orders and when the first course came with the salads and soup one member asked for a soup spoon to eat there Onion soup and the waiter said sorry we don't have any as the banquet has taken all of them so the guest said so should I use my folk, and the waiter said no use your small spoon. So our guest did just that but tell me that they could not find a soup spoon when we were paying over $ 150.00 for the meal. And our experience for the past few years every time there has been an issue with something. It is such a beautiful setting so sad that they can't get their act in order. read more

Stayed at the Black Butte Ranch for the first time and ate several meals at The Lodge Restaurant. Food, service and atmosphere were great. The view simply cannot be beat. My only slight complaint is that the elk I ordered (served with blueberry compot mmmm...) was slightly overcooked, which is a a shame. But on the whole, a surprisingly good place and just so nice not to have to go anywhere far when you are in such a lovely area. Will definitely go back. read more

It felt like it was something she thought was oh, so, cool. It was so bad... She was only interested in making us know how clever she was. News for Maddy: she isn't. We had made reservations for 10 people ahead of time and got seated right away. Our waiter seemed funny at first but then his sarcastic/rude tone didn't match up to the $30+ plates one the menu. He sat down at the end of our booth as to have a casual conversation with us..... and didn't seem to know the specials. We ordered our drinks and waited....... and waited.... my friend got up to see what the hell was going on....and we waited... our waiter was no where to be found and the bar tender said he didn't have our order. 45min later our waiter came over to tell us that they have a new computer system (since OCTOBER: this meal was in July) and our order was lost. I said "sounds like you are offering us free drinks". I usually would NEVER say something like this but he hadn't even been back to check on us for 45 min!! He told us to order another round as soon as our drinks came and the 1st round would be free. ..... end to that part was they were not free and we didn't even reorder then....they just came out after 4 sips of our first drinks... we also all didn't want the same drink order or to have 20 drinks at our table at one time. Our food came out timely (but he hadn't gotten our order for those 45 min either) and was delicious. The guy filling our water was nice, but kept overfilling the glasses and then dumping out part on the floor behind us! Other staff came over to our waiter while he was attempting to take our order and interrupting him with various things/requests. Our waiter was very aggravated that he had to change our checks to remove the drink HE told us we would have free.... or really don't charge us for the ones we didn't even order! Or we would have been happy with some complementary wine! Bottom line we were a group of friends and had a nice time chatting, but the service was TERRIBLE!!!!! This would be terrible for any restaurant but especially for one that is at a nice resort and with those price tags! We were there for 4 hours....and not because we were enjoying ourselves way to much. This was our 2nd year doing Thanksgiving dinner here. Last year we had reservations for a party of 10 at 2p. When we got there about 10-15 min early, we checked in and then waited for almost an hour for our table. They did offer us a glass of champagne or wine, which ever we preferred. It was nice, but we were hungry and drinking alcohol wasn't helping. Once seated though we had a great waiter and the food was amazing. This year, however, our reservations were for a party of 8 at 3p. I advised the guy I spoke to when the called to confirm about what had happened the previous year. He said, "Well we can't ask a table to leave." I say why not? Can't you let them know that there's another party waiting? I digress...So we got there 15 min early. We checked in and they said it would be about 10 minutes. We expected to wait about 15 min. There were people milling around the waiting area.....lots of people. From what I can gather, the 2-3 women who were checking people in seemed to not know how to make it all work. We were not happy. When we were shown to our table, the hostess said she had wanted to put us in the lower level of the middle floor. There were quite a few vacant tables available and we wondered why she couldn't. Once seated our waiter came to take our drink orders. We went downstairs to get our buffet meal (it was better last year), and it appeared to be the gentleman cutting the prime rib's first day. It took a good part of 3 minutes to cut one slice for the person ahead of me. The 'sweet potatoes' were anything but. We all got back to our table and drinks still had not come. We waited another 10 min before drinks arrived. No bread of any kind was brought, nor was there any at the buffet. Other than the 'water boy' filling our water glasses, that was the last we saw of our waiter until he brought us the check. My husband laid down his credit card, and again, we waited almost 10 minutes for the waiter. When he didn't show, my husband put his credit card back in his wallet and laid down cash; then we walked out. Very disappointing. Next year we're going to either Pronghorn or Brasada. read more

We've been vacationing at BBR for over 20 years, and it has been something of a tradition to have dinner at the lodge on our last night of vacation. We started on the deck at the Aspen Lounge and we were treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets we've ever seen anywhere! We went down to the restaurant at our reserved time and were immediately seated at a very nice table for two. I really wanted to be seated in whatever section our favorite waiter, Michael, was working, but he was maxed out, and the table we were given was terrific. We had a little hesitation about coming to dinner after having read some less than favorable recent reviews. But tradition is tradition. There were enough favorable reviews for us to roll the dice. Okay - the menu is definitely different than from years past. It is limited, but something to appease most appetites. I think the restaurant is still trying to find its stride, develop a more diversified menu as they figure out what works. My girlfriend started with a nice salad, I opted for the baked oysters. Salad was very good, the oysters were very tender but the breading or coating on them was a little on the mushy side and would have been better a little crispier. She had a filet, I had a New York steak. Both were perfectly cooked to our requests. Roasted baby Brussel sprouts and mashed potatoes completely a generous plate. The food was very good. The wine list is fairly expansive and seemed about right on price points. Our server was friendly, competent, informative and engaging, rounding out a pleasurable evening. For the life of me I cannot quite remember her name, though I know it began with an "A". I'd love to recognize her by name for the wonderful service she provided, sorry about that. For the sake of tradition, I am happy to report that a couple small chunks of the famous Ranch fudge came with the check, as always. Michael managed to stop by our table to say hello for a few minutes and it's always great catching up with a true gentleman. True, it isn't the Lodge restaurant of 20 years ago, but that isn't really a bad thing. The physical trappings of the restaurant still capture the traditional Ranch ambiance, and of course, the views are perpetually jaw dropping. With the right leadership in the kitchen, along with the continued great service, the Lodge restaurant while still a work in progress, is definitely headed in the right direction. read more

We have been coming to Black Butte Ranch for 40 years and every five years or so we try the Lodge restaurant. The highlights are the phenomenal view and the waitstaff who are very good and friendly. The prices are very high for very underwhelming food. A kale and sweet corn salad with no corn. I had scallops in a sweet potato hash which came in a cream soup kind of sauce. They were priced in the mid $30s for five little, overlooked scallops and a not crispy hash. The root vegetable pot pie had no flavor. The peach cobbler had virtually no topping, no flavor and tasted like baby food. $9. Even the bread wasn't good enough to tempt me into having more. We were celebrating a special event and wished we'd gone to Robert's Pub where you know what you'll get for a more reasonable price or in to Sisters to many of their excellent restaurants. Very, very disappointing. We won't be dining here again. read more

I went to the Lodge Restaurant for dinner on Labor Day Eve. The service was slow. The salads, Bibb and House, were excellent. The special, however, a grilled BBQ pork chop with "adult Mac & Cheese" and fried Brussels Sprouts was very disappointing. The flour in the M & C roux dominated the texture and flavor. The BBQ sauce on the pork was pedestrian... Did it come out of a bottle? Fortunately, the chop itself was nicely grilled; it was moist - not easy to do well. The wine list is decent. Back to the service: when I asked our waiter to suggest a bottle of wine to go well with the pork special, he seemed baffled. "Well, any red would probably work, he finally blurted." I expect more when I am paying circa $30+ for an entree. The view is great here when the weather is clear, but what if it's a cloudy day? The food and service wouldn't make up for it. read more

I've been going to the lodge for years every summer and to sum it up the quality of the food fluctuates. The wait staff is always really nice and personable and the view is absolutely to die for. There really is no better setting for a restaurant. The food is good but it's really expensive and for what you pay it should probably be better. It's a great place for a date or family dinner though and one of only a few options around black butte. If you're looking for something a bit more casual and slightly less pricey check out Roberts pub at big meadow. read more
