I never did come here while I lived in town nor when I've visited since but it's perfectly nice if you want a straightforward meal and a beer. I always love novelty named items on a menu and this place was full of 'em. I got a Deposition Dip. A french dip sandwich but do you get it? A deposition is some kind of legal term! And it's alliterative! It tasted fine - a bit better than the french dip I get at Arby's (that's not even a slight, I love Arby's.) I love dipping meat in meat juice. The waiter was on top of things and the only thing that upset me was that I know I had SO MANY coupons when I lived in town and never used them; I can only dream how much better everything would have been "buy one get one free." Also, I think the BF's burger and fries was like $4 (on special) which is a steal. Very pleasant on a Sunday afternoon but I don't have any desire to go out at night in Denton anymore, everywhere is just Smoke City -I almost died the last time I went to Andy's and I can't imagine the Loophole is any better in that regard. read more

Good lunch stop. We were in Denton and ended up here by default. Everywhere else was packed. I'm glad it happened. We needed really happy with our food and service. The burgers were very good and my sons got flatbread and wings. Everything was good. My only compliant is that they use small glasses for beer. The servers are always SO friendly, but none of them ever seem to be knowledgeable about the menu or specials. They have a GREAT selection of beer on tap and by the bottle. The Loop Hole is a great place to eat on weekdays, especially if you're over 21 on Mondays (drink special night). The food is all great for the price and always satisfies. Each weekday they have an item on the menu on special for about $2 less than normal so you can easily walk away with spending under $10 on a meal if you order the special of the day and a soft drink. The square in downtown Denton has a traditional small town feel to it. Local craft shops, a movie theater, county courthouse and several small diner style restaurants mark the territory. One of these smaller restaurants here is called Loophole, named after the term of getting out of a conviction. This is an appropriately named bar, considering it faces the county courthouse. Loophole Courthouse Bar and Grill appears to have reinvented itself as a college bar for those thirsty students studying at nearby University of North Texas. The menu has many courthouse themed items, and many of the drink specials also carry on some sort of double meaning. I grabbed a quick bite to eat, choosing the "Conviction" which was a very ordinary chicken burger. The breast of chicken came with the choice of grilling, bbq, blackened or fried. I went with the BBQ sauce, which was tangy but nothing to write home about. You have the option of fries, mashed potatoes, or mixed vegetables, and I opted for some good old fashioned fries. These were fairly large cut potatoes, which were much better than the sandwich. I topped it off with an iced tea. Overall, I would give this place a pass in favor of the Old Fashioned Hamburger shop next door if you are going for a burger. If your main intent is beer however, this was the place to be. read more

Back in my binge drinking days with was the place we would hit all the time. They had new management take over about four or five years ago, and everyone thought it was for the worst. Yes the came in redesigned the place cut back on free shots and after hour drinking but hey its still a good time. Monday is $1 draft cant beat that. And daily drink specials throughout the week. I've been to the Loophole twice since it's had its soft reopen. It's calling itself a gastropub now, but this new Loophole doesn't seem wholly committed to the idea. The beer selection is varied (Guinness, Spaten Optimator, Velvet Hammer, Sierra Nevada, and more) and is displayed on a chalkboard, along with the drink specials, on the right when you walk in. I had the impression that a cocktail menu would be added soon, and I think that's exciting. The cocktail I had was frou frou, but also strong. The menu has been revamped and includes: -- Appetizers starting at $5.99 (like Belgian-style frites with malt vin aoili) -- Flatbreads starting at $7.99 (like pear and blue cheese with caramelized onion, walnuts and aged balsamic) -- Hot dogs or "XL Dawgs" starting at $5.99 -- Burgers starting at $7.99 -- Sandwiches starting at $7.99 -- Salads starting at $6.99 The white cheddar mac and cheese with pecan-smoked bacon was tasty, but the portion was small for the $5.99 price and I couldn't taste the truffle flavor that our waitress said was in there. My friend ordered the cheesy frites and the portion was small there as well and the fries weren't crisp. The wild mushroom burger (with triple cream brie, red onion, bacon jam and arugula) came without the bacon jam (from what I could tell) and the arugula was actually spring mix. I'm dubious that the mushrooms were any wilder than what I have in my fridge at home. I prefer the mushroom swiss burger from the previous menu for the taste and the price. This burger wasn't worth $9. The burgers don't come with fries (add $2.99), but with house-made chips. I went with the ranch flavor. For the most part they were good, but some were soft. However, I'd rather have a chip that was a little underdone than one that was burnt. Overall, the chips were really nice, but the ranch flavor on top was a waste. Not much flavor and not incorporated on the chip; it was just kind of thrown on there. Speaking of carbs, I couldn't find the mashed potatoes on the menu anymore, which saddens me. They were my favorite side before. The atmosphere is clean, shiny and new. The fliers that used to line the windows when you first walk in are gone, taking with them any visible connection between the Loophole and the community. (It looks like any corporation could've just moved in to this space with no relationship with Denton.) The exposed brick gives a nice warmth, and there's lots of seating options between the tables, booths, bar and cocktail tables. However, this is where the new concept seems weak. With the fancier items on the menu, the upscale prices, and branding itself as a gastropub, the Loophole lacks refinement. The menus are paper (some of them stained and creased), there are "XL Dawgs" on the menu (not super classy), TVs around the bar show sporting events, and there's a counter-top video game. It's like the Loophole isn't ready to let go completely of what it was. The service was great, though. The waitresses were helpful when we had questions about the menu or asked for recommendations. I saw the bartenders try to greet everyone that came in the door, even knowing some of them by name. This was my favorite place in Denton. I was by no means a regular, but it was where I went when I wanted to be comfortable and hang out. This new version of the Loophole, this gastropub, doesn't carry the same vibe. It was ok. Went for the $5 flatbread pizza night on a Monday. Marguerita flatbread was pretty tasty. Not huge but big enough for a nice snack. Kind of smoky in there due to people smoking at the bar. Only drawback was creepy old dude hitting on ladies. Waitstaff was super friendly and on their game. Extremely fast service. Went to the Loophole for lunch and it was Meh... drinks were okay but definitely not worth $8.75, food was okay but nothing to write home about. The worst part is it's freaking hot in there! The grill is right next to the bar directly in front of where we were sitting and made it an unpleasant experience. They do have 2 small fans hung above the bar but that doesn't help at all, neither does the fact that they keep the front door propped open. Cheese fries were good though. read more

Went to Denton a couple weeks ago for a wedding and was not sure what to expect. When we got in we decided to go watch the UT/AM game and grab a bite to eat, luckily we found Loop Hole and grabbed a table big enough for all of us right in front of the tv. The wait staff was nice, the food was pretty good for a bar (especially the Fried Pickles), and the atmosphere was very 'pub' like. The best part about it was that the drinks were SO cheap! Oh, and the next day my friend wanted to watch the soccer game and Loop Hole happened to be the only bar in the city playing it-totally made his day:) read more

Loophole used to be a favorite of mine, but I stopped going because it didn't really compare to some of the newer bars in Denton. I happened to go by recently and found that they have better beer options and a new menu. I was impressed and will definitely be back. The only drawback is they still allow smoking. read more

Located across the street from the Denton Courthouse on the town square, the Loophole Courthouse Pub is a quirky eatery sure to fill you up, no contest. Inside the Loophole Courthouse Pub there is an aged, cozy feel enhanced by brick walls covered in a local artist's work alongside the alcohol signs and dark wood accents and furniture. Though smoking is allowed, there isn't that stale smokey quality in the air as you will find in so many other restaurant/bars. The waitstaff is friendly and full of menu suggestions, of which they are very knowledgeable. The courthouse pub and grill carries its theme onto the menu with catchy section titles like "arraignment appetizers," "I'll take the wrap", "bailiff burgers" and "punitive potato skins". I ordered one of the burgers and was excited to be given even more options: white or wheat bun and a choice of sides that included french fries, mixed vegetables or mashed potatoes. I went for the mashed potatoes, which turned out to be garlic, skins-on mashed potatoes proving that they hadn't arrived at the restaurant in a box. My burger, the "bail bond," was hot, juicy and definitely worth the $6.50 I paid for it. The Loophole's kitchen is open from 11 a.m. until midnight every day, and the bar stays open until 2 a.m. If you can, try to go on a Monday; The Loophole donates 5 percent of its Monday sales to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. You can also purchase "Save the Ta Tas" apparel there, and 5 percent of the sale will be donated to breast cancer research. read more

This my first yelp review..... I want to start this off by saying the servers here were busting their butts and as attentive as they could be in a rush. I fault them for nothing! My boyfriend and I came to the loophole expecting decent bar food and drinks. The drinks were good, took a while BUT a lot of people had come in at the same time. We ordered two burgers and fried pickles, burger number one was a mushroom Brie burger, both mushroom and Brie were cold as in un cooked mushrooms. I hate saying this but honestly the worst burger I've ever had and we both are not picky .. at all. Very easy to please. My boyfriend had a grand total of 4 fries on his plate. Two of my friends and I waited all day to go to this establishment and were super excited but sadly we were let down. Restaurant didn't seem very packed but service took much longer than expected. Sam our server was super nice and very sweet but we had an issue with one meal because it didn't have everything that was listed on the menu. We stopped the first employee we saw and she was VERY rude and ended up throwing out the meal instead of correcting the mistakes. We stopped in here while on vacation from Minnesota. During our weeklong stay, we visited each pub on the square and this is amongst our favorites. Brick walls and mirrors touting the brews behind the bar add charm to this multi-leveleled establishment, which you'll find facing the local courthouse. At night, the square is all lit up- just gorgeous. Very friendly place with great service. The food is fantastc, and I recommend the Jailbreak burger and a Guinness. 1. I am a none smoker who loves the fact that you can't smoke inside in the State of Washington. In Denton you can. So for you non-smokers this is not an ideal location. For the locals that are use to this, well I guess #1 doesn't matter to you. 2. You must like fried cheap meat. I don't, I ate the grilled chicken platter. Talk about a piece of thawed Tyson chicken with no flavor. 3. My partner asked for her turkey wrap w/o cheese. You'd think they would think twice about putting cheese all over her steamed veggies. Nope. 4. Had to order a soda (even though I hardly ever do anymore) the tap water was not so good. Hasn't been in most of Texas, compared with Washington water. 5. It was clean, the staff was friendly and for the nostalgia of a small town in Texas this could be your place. But for us, we couldn't get our check fast enough. read more

The Loophole is a staple in Downtown Denton. While there's nothing extraordinary about it, it does the basic things well: good atmosphere, good drink selection, good bar food. The service is always friendly, if sometimes a bit slow. The only real complaint is the smoke. While one wouldn't be surprised with smokers in a bar, at Loophole you don't just have to tolerate a smoker a couple of booths down, you have to be ok with reeking of smoke when you leave even after a couple of minutes. Also, they're about close for a couple of weeks for a remodel, so I'm excited to see the results of that. read more

So the loophole and I have a past from when I was a kid hanging out with my dad at McBride's, circa 1999. At this time, probably the last time I ate at the loophole until recently, I felt the food they served was similar to eating ashtray bits. Like, it was not something I ever cared to sample again. But my friend told me about how amazing their burgers were. So good that she didn't even eat the French fries and that is her favorite part of the meal. So I decided to give this place a try again. I have to say the menu has definitely changed and the atmosphere has from probably 15 years ago. But I'm not so sure that this food is any better. When I walked in I was bombarded by the same stale cigarette smell that brought me straight back to being 11 years old and walking in to get an order of french fries with my friend. Just the fact that it smells just like it used to, is probably enough to tell you that the food is not any better. It was probably enough to tell me that I should just leave but I gave them a chance and it wasn't awful. First off the service was immediately very friendly we were greeted by two different people in what seemed to be a very natural way, wasn't like how they do it at chain restaurants where they just are like greeting you because they have to. The people that work there seem happy to be there and happy to serve, genuinely. In this respect the service was good from the beginning but when it came to getting our check it took about 30 minutes after we finished and got our to go box. What seems to be the reason it took so long is because our server was so busy taking the orders of people who had just got there, so maybe some delegation of time is in order, but he was really friendly so kind of hard to say, maybe it was just a bad day.. I had the cheeseburger and fries because their burger of the month doesn't exist yet. My boyfriend got pulled pork nachos because all the other things he tried to order they were out of. The experience of like a third of their menu not being available but not marked unavailable was kind of disheartening. Their menu looked really good and really interesting but if I can't try the food I don't really want to read about it. The food was served quickly but it wasn't hot, my burger was fresh it tasted like it had just come off the grill but everything else- the nachos, the French fries they were room temp at best. The burger wasn't great it tasted kind of how I remember their food, kind of like I'm eating a cigarette. The French fries were good, they were crispy but they were a little bit too salty but not bad, they would have been better if they were hotter. The pulled pork nachos were good but they were too spicy, jalapenos maybe if they had been served on the side would have been a better choice. Ultimately I'm giving this place 4 stars because I know where they came from and I think they're making strides to get better. I think it's going to take a little while and I don't know if I'm going to be back for a while. I didn't think the prices were outrageous, and there wasn't a line to get in like there were at a lot of other places that night. So really it was more of a three or three and a half star experience and I'm giving them four because I really want them you do better and work on the quality of their food and I think it will be a good place to go. Bottom line: it's bar food and there's better within walking distance. read more

I like this establishment much better when it was formerly Ellington's Bar owned by Lindsey. Their menu was so much better. it had great appetizers and good staff. Now it is $$$ and the menu is ???Pears on a burger? Where the heck are they coming from? California? This is Texas and they don't offer a chili cheese burger. UPDATE:Found out that the server who was brand new and on her second day got fired and blamed for the terrible management. Terrible place to go and terrible place to work apparently. Went here with a few friends tonight. (Saturday April 8th, 2017 Got in at 6:30, ordered at 7:30, got our food at 8:30, finished by 8:45 and unable to pay until 9:30). First round of drinks was wrong and food took an hour to come out. Waitress was brand new so definitely not her fault. Manager refused to comp more than 20% saying "Well we're not an Olive Garden." Will be returning with hopes of better management, can't say the same about my friends. read more

My friend and I went here this past Sunday night. The girl bartender was more interested in flirting with the guy she was working with rather than talking to us at all. Then when she finally decided to see what we wanted to drink, she was adamant about us trying these drinks she created. The drinks were horrible, but we didn't want to hurt her feelings. This was probably one of the worst experiences I have had in a while... this establishment lost all of my respect tonight, while I was sitting at the bar I noticed what I thought to be a normal couple. Until they were refused service, after only what seemed to me as two beverages, the bartender decides to cut off the gentlemen because he seemed inebriated. Come to find out he was not. His sister stated that he had been in an accident and was left with some brain damage. The bartender said that it was not her problem and proceeded to bash, and banter the young man and his sister. I have never seen such unorthodox behavior.. I'm not sure why there are so many low ratings, I am sitting here right now and I am finding this place to be a fun little bar. I stumbled into this place while I was waiting for some repair work to be done to my car. Granted, it's in the middle of the afternoon and I cannot attest to the evening crowd, but I have had absolutely incredible service. The bartender made a perfect dirty martini and I'm very picky about my martini. I thought the place looked new and clean. I will come back with the girls on the weekend just for the great service alone. Friendly bar service is number one in a neighborhood bar for me, and I have found that in spades here. read more
