Love this place, hate the service. They have a pretty good selection of paints and pottery here, I like to frequent the ceramic animals section. Like other reviewers mentioned, it does get pricey quickly but they do Groupons occasionally that make it a pretty good deal. As far as the service, the girls who work here are all hipsters in skinny jeans and nose rings who just sit up at the front counter painting while I have to give them a sad, helpless puppy face to get more paint. I came here very excited to pick up my pottery the other day only to find out that one of the hipsters forgot to start the kiln so it wasn't ready as promised. I always come here for spring break(4 years). But lately they hired a new girl named VAL. She is definitely rude. We walked in and she doesn't acknowledge us. We picked our own paint, got all supplies for ourself while she's being busy on her phone. Asked her when I can pick up our products and she huffs and points to the sign. I don't think I have ever had such horrible service at mad potter. I will be visiting a different location from now on. This is not our first experience with the Mad Potter ( see other review for Beechnut location). We were hoping that we would have a better experience at this location. Unfortunately, this was not the case. First, the employee that helped us (Celeste),got our paint orders,put it on a shelf close to the paints,and walked away to the other side of the store to chat with another employee who was helping another customer. She was there for at least 5-10 mins. My wife went to ask about our paint supplies and she (Celeste) answered with condescending "YES?!". My wife returned our table while Celeste returned to the painting station to prepare our paints. She returned to our table with the first order of paints and carelessly threw the order on the table in front of my wife without saying a word. She was so unpleasant, my wife decided she did not want to paint. My daughter and I continued with our pieces and I needed more paint. Celeste ignored us and never checked on us, I had to get other employees to refill our paints and complete our order. I am completely disappointed with Mad Potter overall as a company. It seems their employees have no concept of customer service or care about their job. This experience has basically sealed my opinion about the company and I will not spend my money or be a customer of theirs from now on. I will seek out a local pottery place which provides the same service even if it costs more if I choose to do this again. read more

I visited on a wine night, where we paid around $20 to paint and have all we can drink. Sounds like a good idea, right? Bad, bad, bad idea - because it's pretty hard to paint something very pretty while you are drinking and catching up on chit-chat with friends! My mug has my dirty little fingerprints all over it! All in all, it was a fun night & a fun experience, but not something I'd want to do really often. My mug was around $20, which is pricey for a mug, but it's the experience that counts, right? The drink service was fine, but the staff was not all that helpful with the paint aspect. They just showed us to the massive stacks of stencils rather than assiting us with finding stencils, we often had to ask several times and wait for paint refills, and the brushes are junk. If you are planning on doing some detail work, bring your own brush as theirs are all kind of old and the bristles aren't strong enough. read more

I bought a Groupon for two and went on Monday night, not knowing that the studio fee is waived on Monday's, so that was great! Overall my mother in law and I had a great time, however, the customer service definitely fell short. I didn't know that the staff bring you the paints. I was convinced the girl had two of my colors wrong, but she said she didn't. Well, now that I've picked up my piece, she did. While we were waiting for our paint to be refilled all three of the employees were hanging out behind the counter, rather then checking on their customers. At one point I asked about an event they were promoting (Empty Bowl) and the man (who I think may be the manager) just handed me a brochure, didn't even say two words. Very strange, and awkward. I painted stripes on my piece and when I finished, the girl said "Oh you should have used tape for the lines" - I had no idea there was tape available. Would have been nice if she checked in sooner and made this observation, or told us what was available when we chose our items, knowing it was our first time there. Additionally, I was told our pieces would be available on Saturday. I went on Saturday to find a sign on the door that they were closed for a private party. Frustrating. When I went back later that day, the guy that was there (who was very nice and attentive) searched for 15 minutes only to find that our items hadn't been fired yet. So I had to make a third trip out on Monday to pick up our items. I would probably go again as we had a great time together, but really feel that the customer service is lacking, which was a disappointment. read more

This place is a blast! I can't speak for a kids experience, but I'm sure its something they would enjoy doing. What I can comment on is a group of 6, 20-something ladies enjoying a night out here. I would consider myself as crafty and I'm always looking to try new things with my girlfriends to keep things interesting. One thing that drew me in about this place as the booze. Yes, booze and painting...they go well together. They sell wine and beer here and will even order pizza for you while you paint. As a suggestion to this place, they create an adults only time at night. Sometimes when you are having a drink with your lady friends, particular subjects come up that are probably not something a mom would want her 6-year old son or daughter to here. Sorry! We are used to being around grown men not kids. Our evening of painting turned into a 2+ hour event. The girls there where super crafty and gave some good tips on how to make your piece turn into something that belongs in a museum. If you are the least bit crafty you will love Mad Potter! It is a great place to let your creative juices flow. They have tons of specials all week so make sure you plan your visit based on their calendar that is on their web site. I love how much they have Groupons. I can't resist!!! And once I spend one Groupon they come out with another! Its amazing! My friends and I love to get together to do this. I have painted a coffee mug, a vase, a piggy bank (with zebra strips, his name is Pebra) and Christmas ornaments. I love how they have items based on the holiday that is coming up in the next 2 months or so. So you can start working on that Jack-O-Lantern in August to make sure you get it done by Halloween! This is also a great place to bring the kids to paint items for Mother's Day and Father's Day. My dad still has the pen holder I painted who knows how long ago. They have special deals for those holidays. Another amazing thing that sets this pottery painting place apart.... BOOZE!!! They have wine and beer! They also have nights where you pay to drink all you want I believe. The workers are always so helpful with ideas. They know exactly how to do that idea in your head after you describe it just a little to them. This is a great place to go to have fun. However, DO NOT assume your order is ready when they say it's ready! Call before to ask. There's a good chance they didn't get to it. I was told mine would be ready by Saturday at 4pm. I went in at 4pm on Sunday and it wasn't ready. The assistant manager told me he will have it done in 30 mins. I decided to leave and return Monday at 3:30pm, and there was an issue still and my work was not finished. This was a birthday gift and now I can't give my father his gift on time, which is heartbreaking. read more

Such a nice place for doing crafts! There is a wide selection of pottery pieces to choose from, from animals to mugs to little jars you can customize. The staff is really nice, and very generous in materials. Aprons, brushes, paint, sponges, toothbrushes for texture...everything is here. If you're not done with your piece during your visit, you can bring it back to finish with no extra charge. I took my boyfriend here for a date night (we like trying new things), and I'd say we both had a blast. We ended up arriving on Diva Night, but there was plenty of room for us. The staff was very helpful. They made suggestions for pieces, designs, paint colors, and even on drinks. I should note here, that Diva Night is the night where you pay a set fee and can drink all the wine you want while you paint (not limited to girls only). There was a great variety of items to choose from, but we were surprised at the prices. I didn't know cookie jars were so expensive! That being said, there was a great spread on prices, anywhere from $10 to $50 per item. Since we were unable to complete our projects before closing, it was suggested that we come back to do it. No pressure to do it all right then! When we returned to finish, we got the same great treatment. Thanks guys! A few things I'd like to note: they have specials all the time. This place is okay for painting, but not okay for your wallet. My boyfriend and I came here for an anniversary date. Halfway through our three hour painting session, the A/C broke and I feel like the kiln was still working because it got really hot in the room really quickly. When it came time to pay, it was $82 for the two of us to paint one serving bowl and a heart plaque. Their pottery prices range from $12-$42 and the bowl we chose was at the upper limit of that price range. The girls were super helpful and attentive of you asked for help. However, we also went during the weekend before Mother's Day and there were a bunch of dads and their kids there. Naturally, those groups needed more attention and supervision than us. I actually didn't mind being left alone to paint on our own - it made the experience more intimate for us. But if someone is completely not artistically inclined, being left alone might actually be a huge negative for them. I highly suggest making reservations, especially if going on a Saturday. Also, they have date nights on Friday nights which are supposed to be a bit more low key since they're adults only. read more

My girlfriends and I get together once a month for a GNO and this is what we decided to do in September! It was SO much fun!! We had a reservation for 6:45 on a Monday night...but we really didnt need one. It was not crowded at all. There were several other couples in there and a couple singles but the place is fairly big so there is plenty of room for everyone...especially on a week night. So, you get there, then it is the hard part- choosing a piece of pottery. There are SOOOO many to choose from- everything from every animal you can imagine, vases, plates, bowls, candy bowls, dog bowls, boxes, mugs, martini & margarita glasses, letters and so much more. Pottery ranges anywhere from about $12 all the way up to around $50. We spent almost 20 minutes just trying to decide what pieces we wanted to paint. We finally choose, then got to choose our paint colors, brushes, stencils, etc... We had a table to ourselves so we could spread out. Then we got to work! I painted a small round vase ( $15 for the piece ). The other girls painted plates, a ring holder and a candy bowl. We designed and painted our pottery for about an hour or little longer. The staff is really helpful- always walking around to help or answer questions and give ideas. There was even the cutest little dog running around the store that was so sweet. You can order wine ( bottles or glasses ), beer, sodas and water. We split a bottle of wine ( about $28 for the bottle ). Once you finish your pottery, you will leave it there for a few days so the staff can fire it, then when you pick it up it is bright and shiny and much better looking than when you left it. There is a private room upstairs for parties or bigger groups. This is such a fun idea for you and your girlfriends, a fun casual date, or come alone! Great gift ideas for the holidays too!! The paint is usually $8 but we were there on "Free Paint" night so we didnt have to pay for that. So prepare to pay for your paint, your piece and any drinks you want. Sometimes a girl gets the urge to do something creative. Maybe it's from spending way to many hours working or maybe it's from pinning too many things on pinterest... Well, a friend of mine invited me to Diva Night here at Mad Potter, and what a fantastic way to do something creative. At first, I was a little intimidated. There are so many various items you can choose from. I picked a little tiki shot glass - small and simple enough to complete. My girlfriends and I all made our selections, were served wine (one of the diva night perks!), and got spend some quality time creating, chatting, and drinking. Another perk is getting to bring your own snacks- so our group got to enjoy some pretty tasty treats from the nearby Kroger and Whole Foods. After I finished my shot glass and got the hang of how it all works, I decided to do a tray and try out the lace technique. It's really fun and beautiful. I highly recommend diva night (and yes, men can come on diva night, too)... For $15 plus the price of your piece you get: -- unlimited wine and beverages -- a "creative" happy hour if you will with your friends -- a feeling of accomplishment since you have enough plenty of time to finish 1-2 pieces Since the first Diva Night visit back in August, I've been back here three times. One of the outings was picked as a birthday week activity. And we all had a blast! Some tips: -- Beware: This can become a pretty addictive and pricey activity! -- Do take advantage of the no painting fee on days that you pick up an already painted piece. -- Bring snacks! -- First timers: pick something simple and do-able. -- Bring friends! I just got home from the Mad Potter in River Oaks and it was a lot of fun. I went with a friend. He painted a mug and I did an ice cream dish. Definitely allow plenty of time....especially if you are anything close to a perfectionist like I am. We were there for about two hours. I finished my piece but he is going to go back to finish his. There are a number of reasons for the length of time....(1) you have to pick out what you want to paint....and there are a LOT of items to chose from. (2) Then you have to pick which colors you want....from about 50 colors. (3) Then you pick up paint brushes, can look though stencils and stamps (I probably should have done that before I picked colors and it might have helped me make up my mind on what to do). (4) FInally you get to start painting. Depending on how artistic your are and how delicate your design is how long it will take. My design wasn't hugely difficult but I'm a stickler about straight lines so it wasn't a short process. Also, they suggest that you go over each are 3 times (it dries pretty quick between coats) so that you get a good solid color during firing. All in all it was a fun couple hours. Not the cheapest (~$50 for the two of us) but we enjoyed ourselves. NOTE - The River Oaks/W Grey one seems to stay open the latest of the 3 in Houston. BUT the RO one is also the only one that is not BYOB....you have to buy their liquor. read more

We were first told that our finished pottery had been moved to another location due to Hurricane Harvey, but it wasn't at the other location. Then they called us to say that the pottery had been put on the wall of fame and we'd get a free pottery session. So, we come in to pick up our pottery at the original location and get the free session. We're told that #1, the pottery had been "donated" (thrown out) and #2, our free pottery session was no longer valid. What?! They called us to say that our pottery went on the wall of fame, but they didn't call us before throwing it out? Unbelievable. It had been a long time, but that's because they gave us incorrect information. What was even more unbelievable is that the front desk employee was incredibly rude, and blaming us for trying to pick up at the wrong location. No ma'am, we tried to pick it up at the location you told us to pick it up at. I would expect a nice little place like this to actually apologize instead of blaming the customer, but no, they kept citing their little policies and acting rudely towards us. read more

Expensive! You have to pay to paint, then pay for the pottery. For 2 people, we spent $97. Apart from that, the employees are super helpful when it comes to giving design tips and tricks, as well as refilling our paint when we needed more. They are kinda stingy on how much paint they give so you end up getting a little at a time and asking for more paint every 10 min. It's really fun, especially for a date or a group event! Only other downside is that it takes 4-5 days to get your pottery back. read more

I have been here a couple of times, and each time I had a blast! I can literally spend 3 hours painting a mug (though I'll admit, I'm a slight perfectionist). They have many ceramics to choose from. Around Christmas time they have several Christmas ornaments as well. When you're finished painting, the pieces look kind of pale and dirty. But once they glaze and bake it, the colors look very rich and brilliant. Tip: For those of you who like deep purple, they have a "secret purple" color on the back of the paint palette. read more

The painting aspect was fine. Charge for the item and a studio fee. I like the Glazery in Sugar Land more, you don't have to pay a $9 fee per person to paint and then the item. This place is awesome!! For kids and adults- you get to pick what piece you want to paint and pick the colors which they give you. Came here with our daughter and she was able to paint a dog bowl with our help and the help of the women who work here. They even serve drinks or alcohol as you paint. Came here with my daughter on a Saturday afternoon. When we walked in, we stood by the door for a little bit and then were greeted by a staff member. First question she asked was "is this your first time?" I told her yes. She said that to start we needed to pick out our pieces and then we could share a table with another guest. It wasn't necessarily busy, there were 1-3 people at each table and it was relatively quiet in there but all tables were taken. Thankfully a family of 3 let my daughter and I sit down and share their table. We picked out our ceramics, then sat down...and waited. The staff member that had greeted us was chatting with another staff member. I finally gave up and asked the family at the table "so, what do we do next?" So this nice lady told us to fill out these cards with our colors. She explained everything that the staff should have. So then after we filled out our cards, we waited again. At this point I was getting pretty irritated with the staff. I told you it was our first time and there were no instructions given. I approached her and said "Hi, I filled out my colors what do I do next?" She took our cards and assured me she'd get us our colors. She came back rather promptly. Then we started painting. We ran out of paint pretty quick. And once again we found ourselves waiting. I could go on. We found ourselves sitting around and waiting constantly. We couldn't chase down a staff member to save our lives. I love the concept but it was a really frustrating experience. I do think their ceramics are little overpriced as well. They need to be aware that not everyone knows what they are doing there. I've never been to a painting place like that. It would have been nice to have a more helpful staff. read more

Buyer beware! It started out a pleasant experience. I went with my boyfriend to have a unique date night with a take home gift that we could treasure. There was a pretty nice selection of pottery items in the shop. Although I agree with the other reviews on price, the young girl running the shop let us paint one item together and only charged us for one painting fee and the one item. Even still, it ended up around $25.00. Now, I don't know if it's because there was a large birthday party, but the service was sub-par. Although the girl running the place was nice enough, she didn't check up on us nor get us refills on paint or help us find supplies. It felt awkward to me as a customer walking over to the supply desk and rummaging around trying to find what I needed as she stood at the front counter. Never mind the large group, lack of service, and lack of supplies, we were both having a great time painting. The real reason I am rating this place two stars has to do with our dilemma a week later. My boyfriend and I show up a week from the day we painted our item to pick it up. We went straight to the back to look for the item and couldn't find it anywhere. We talked to this polite guy at the front who tried to help us find our pottery. A half hour later, after we looked everywhere and the associate made a phone call to the girl working on the night we painted, we were told that they couldn't find our pottery. $25 dollars down the drain and I haven't even received what I paid for. Although I am still in the process of hoping they find my item or give me a refund, I am thoroughly upset that something so special and expensive could've been lost!!! I am completely disappointed in the system they have to account for and keep track of pottery items. I was told that perhaps our pottery wasn't there because someone arrived before us and maybe chose the wrong one because the "liked" ours better. Really?? There should be a better way to monitor something so important to the customer. I will not be visiting this location again and would recommend anyone else consider if they want to take the risk. read more

I'm a big fan of Mad Potter ever since my boyfriend's sisters introduced me to it about a year ago. Since then, my boyfriend and I have been back an average of twice a month. However, we've recently noticed a decline in the customer service offered at this location and have avoided going back despite the fact that we have several vouchers and gift certificates to use. Julianne and Angela are my favorite two staff members at this location. They are always extremely helpful whenever I am there by giving pointers or answering my questions on how to achieve certain patterns. They recognize the regulars who come in by name and always greet everyone with a smile. They are also good at making everyone feel good about how their pottery turned out. However, some of the new staffers could use a lesson in customer service from these two. For example, when my boyfriend and I went in the last time, we asked one of the new girls for a large table since we had a party of four, and the smaller tables would have made the group a tight fit. She said that the one large table that was open was already reserved, so we reluctantly sat at a smaller table hoping that a large table would open up soon. However, as we were looking around for a piece to paint, a group of four people came in and the same girl asked if they were just a party of four and if they had a reservation. They said they were a group of four but had no reservation, but the girl offered the "reserved" table to them. We were extremely insulted by this encounter and decided to leave without painting anything. The same girl was also rude and impatient the last time I stopped by to pick up a finished piece and forgot my receipt (I have never had to show my receipt since I started painting there); she also kept making comments about how common my boyfriend's name was in their system since she insisted on looking us up in the computer. It is a shame that my experience with this new staffer has made me reluctant to go back to this location again. Apart from the mentioned experiences, I have never had a negative encounter with the studio. I have introduced several friends and family members to this location, despite the fact that there are two pottery studios in our area, and they've all had positive experiences as well. The studio fees, which cover the cost of paint, are $8 for adults and $6 for children, which is a bit pricey, so my friends and I aim to make it on a free paint day, which is usually the second Monday of every month. Wednesdays are also free paint days if you know the whisper word of the day (they post these on the Mad Potter Facebook page). The studio is fair in that if they make a mistake with your pottery, they will offer a voucher for a free repaint that covers the cost of two studio times and the pottery that was messed up. This was extremely useful when the studio accidentally got another person's paint on a plate that I had painted as a gift. The studio also holds your piece for a very long time (up to a couple of months) in case you are too busy to pick it up when it is ready. Pottery pieces are rather expensive, ranging from $10 to $80 for custom or large pieces, but my boyfriend and I love date nights here. It usually takes us between three to four hours to finish painting a piece each. We so far have a sizeable collection of dinner plates, bowls, and mugs from the pottery studio. The studio is pretty cozy and can get very busy, especially on the weekends, so if you are coming with a large party, it is a good idea to make a reservation. During the summer, there are a lot more children coming in the day, so if you are not a big fan of loud and rowdy children like me, it is best to come in the evenings. The hours of the studio are incredibly convenient since they stay open relatively late. There are also drinks available from apple juice to red wine. Staff members give a good introduction to how to start painting for new customers so you're never starting a piece completely blind. Be aware that if you purchase Groupon or Living Social vouchers for the studio, there is a lot of fine print to wade through. One thing to note is that you cannot use these vouchers with other deals, such as free paint days, so $8 of your voucher goes toward the studio fees. However, they are still worth purchasing whenever they are available! read more

When I first went there to paint, everything was great! The ladies were amazing and attentive! When I went to pick up my pottery, the ladies couldn't find my paper work for both me and my friend and they even looked up our numbers in the system and nothing. I was there for a good 20 mins. One lady said she works at a different location and it was her first time at that location and the other lady seemed like she didn't know anything like she was shy and seemed like she just started working there. I love mad potter! This location isn't BYOB, but other locations are. This location however sells beer and wine. There's different specials sometimes. But when we went here for a birthday, the painting fee was $6 per person plus the cost of the pottery, which may range from $6-$100 depending on which pottery you pick. There were so many things to choose from such as piggy banks, cups, pots, vases, plates, ring holder, shot glass, beer mug and so forth. I must go back to paint a beer mug piggy bank. This was the first time I took my son her and I will never go back but to pick up our stuff , you do have to go back days after your done . They ladies where not helpful at all the manager is completely consumed by her phone she can't help the new girl ! I asked for water during the time here and was never given one , at every step of the way I was just trying to figure out what to do you only get 6 colors , it was very hard to find , just no !!!!
