Beef, chicken & mushroom empanadas (with chimichurri & spicy aioli sauces) - VN
    Vince N.

I got to try the Magic Oven food booth at the recent UB40 concert at the MACC. Empanadas on any menu catches my eye! FOOD: Empanadas - $18.00 (3 pcs.) I chose ground beef, chicken and mushroom (bleu cheese was the 4th option). Of the three, the chicken had the most flavor, but not by much. Dips of chimichurri and a spicy aioli were available but the insides were very bland. My least favorite, the mushroom empanada, was mostly all dough with an undercooked, mushy center. SERVICE: Friendly, quick & efficient. OVERALL: Pass the seasoning, please.

Probably our favorite pizza in all the island!!! So delicious and fresh and the dough is amazing. It did take a little long for it to come out as there was only 2 guys working the oven but overall delicious and only disappointed that we didn't have time to come back to try the sandwiches

[[HIGHLIGHT]]We were so excited to check out this road-side shop. It looked rustic and authentic from the outside.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We grabbed a couple sandwiches and two pizza's. They had a big brick oven outside that looked impressive. The cook (from Argentina) was a very friendly young man. When the pizza was done, it appeared and tasted like a frozen style pizza. We felt duped. The people working were friendly, but the food products need a lot of work. Prices were high...even for Maui.

I got the charcuterie sandwich and it was not at all what I expected in the best of ways ... 2 large pieces of Italian bread spread with gig jam then grilled and layered with meats, Gruyère, greens, goat cheese and a balsamic glaze ... one of the most beautiful things I e ever eaten! Instead of two entrées, we decided one appetizer and one entrée, simply because I think their meatballs are the best on the island. They are fantastic. The fresh baked focaccia bread was also outstanding, although my girlfriend and I both found the vinegar/oil a weird mix as the vinegar would not stick to the bread because of the oil. The service was fantastic. You're probably thinking how is this review two star when half of the meal and service is already fantastic? It started with the last two times we came to Casanova's upcountry. *black and white flashback* Casanova's was the restaurant of our first date 6 years ago and we always went there for any special occasion. It always delivered. However, the two most recent trips were less than subpar. The pizza had to be eaten with a fork because the crust was so floppy and thin, and the service was just not there. We had one of those grumpy waiters who made us feel bad for even asking for something. And then the sorbet dessert took more than 30 minutes to come out. *back to present day* So we told ourselves, this would be the third strike, and if Casanova's still disappointed, they would be out of the regular rotation. The waiter asked us if we wanted bread, and my girlfriend said, "yes, please." But then I noticed that bread is not free. To me, you don't offer something that is complementary at many places without letting people know it's gonna cost them. Then, for the meatballs, which, mind you, are still amazing...the manager asked if we wanted parmesan cheese. We said yes, and he brought back what appeared to be Kraft Parmesan cheese from the green cylinder container. You guys all know the one. The ground powder that you grew up thinking is what Parmesan cheese topping is, but then you go to a real Italian restaurant and realize no, it's actually something that is a much more luxurious experience. It is bursting with flavor and shredded on your plate for maximum freshness. I guess it's the same thing as grinding pepper over your salad versus giving you a salt shaker. This is not Fazzoli's lol Also, I do not know if they raised prices since our last few times, but everything felt more expensive. The chicken parmesan was $33. It was ok. It wasn't this omg experience like we had had previously, but, we also couldn't tell if it was just all of the experiences finally coming to a head. A month ago, I had also spoken with a coworker of their own subpar experience at Casanova's as well. So here we are, over $60 for what should've been a cheap night out for one appetizer and one entrée. ...And with this crazy weird Parmesan experience. We felt like they were increasing prices, but lowering the quality of the ingredients. We couldn't put our finger on it, other than to say this was a value to price mismatch. Given the prior two times, this was strike three. We will not be going here again.

It's a small food trailer with their wood fired oven hitched on to the right side of it. This is where all the action happens. They have a small menu, a few of which are vegetarian friendly options and also have 2 salads as well. I ordered the Hawai'i, a 3 cheese blend, with kona coffee bbq pulled pork, & pineapple. My husband got the O'ahu and added chicken. I went to pay and only then did she tell me there was a 30 minute wait. WHAT. But they'll "really try to get it out in 25" (which they did). Really wish I knew that the wait was that long before hand though! I recommend asking what the wait time is before ordering. I believe they max out at 40ish pizzas an hour since their oven can only fit so much. I got my pizza only to be dismayed when I opened it up... the person taking my order must've thought I said Kaua'i. A completely different pizza. I should've known when she told me they were out of "mushrooms" and asked what I wanted instead... I just went with it and chose peppers. Except, I didn't even get peppers either. My husband's pizza didn't have any basil on it too. That's ok I said, I was thinking of trying this one anyway. They sold out of pizza a few orders after me, so there was no way they'd be able to make another one and I wasn't about to wait again... Optimistic, I took a bite of my pizza and it was extremely salty and was sitting in a pool of oil. I get it's a bit oily due to the type of pizza (pesto), but it was too much. The dough itself is quite good and I actually really enjoyed the texture. There's so much potential, but unfortunately our pizza's fell terribly short and I couldn't even finish mine because it was overwhelmingly salty. I looove salty food, I really do, but I could only eat 3 slices before I had to tap out. I really wanted to like it, I even made it past the long wait time and getting the wrong order since well, they do sound similar and the environment was loud. Perhaps it was an off night, but it'll be a while before we return. Such a bummer because we love pizza!

This can be a dangerous thing, but I'm still happy ! I really enjoyed my Maui pizza. They were very generous with their topping (sweet onions, goat cheese and balsamic reduction). It was a perfect balance is salty and sweet. I feel like the crust was just the right amount of chewy and the price was fair, being that the pizzas are as fresh as can be and made with local ingredients. I cannot wait to try their other options!

We made dinner reservations through Open Table and were seated immediately when we arrived. Everyone was very friendly and happy to be there.
