We normally come here when we crave the surf and turf and don't want to leave WS for some good Mexican food. The carne asada and shrimp is simply delicious. Service can be hit or miss at times but generally pretty good. The vibes are moody and dark and gothic which is cool. My friend and I assumed that this was a restaurant due to its lively menu. As expected, our I.D's were not checked when we walked in. We sat down and ordered some nachos. Then my friend, who had recently lost his wallet, asked if it would be possible to order a beverage without his. At this point, the waitress looked troubled and said that she may not be able to serve us at all. We waited for about 20 minutes until she informed us that we would have to leave. I asked to speak to the manager who told me that the establishment was legally classified as a bar and not a restaurant. She said that children would not be allowed in. I presented to her my I.D and she said that I could stay but my friend would have to leave. We canceled our order and left. There was no external indication that it was only a bar. The Matador West Seattle is a wonderful place for happy hour, which is served daily from 4 PM - 6 PM and 10 PM - 1 AM. My husband and I went there on a Friday at 5 PM and there were still plenty of tables available. I highly recommend the Grande Nachos ($5). It contains cheddar and monterey jack cheeses, black beans, pico de gallo, guacamole, cilantro-lime sour cream, and tortilla chips. It is delicious and the plate is huge! For an extra charge, you can add chicken, marinated steak, chorizo, or ground beef, but I think the vegetarian version is good and the best deal. We also ordered six street tacos. It is 1 for $2, 3 for $5, or 5 for $8. For my half, I ordered one shredded chicken, one carnitas, and one pork belly. The tacos were ok, but pretty simple. Also, the pork belly was deep fried, which I wasn't expecting. All together, we had more than enough food for two people and we would definitely go there again for happy hour. read more

Came here tonight for happy hour with a friend this is usually our go to. Service is always friendly and there is a good HH food menu. The HH cocktails run around $8.50-$10. My friend loves the bartender margarita and I went for the I went with the Jalisco Mule. We used to go to the Ballard location our favorite is the bacon wrapped jalapeños we were happy to see them on the HH menu, we also went with nachos and guacamole. We loved the pickled veggies that came with the guacamole and I love the pickled cabbage with the peppers. I've had the street tacos entree, which comes with five small tacos with five different meats: housemade chorizo, braised beef, carnitas, shredded chicken, and al pastor. This was really good, especially the chorizo, carnitas, and beef. I like street tacos since they are the perfect size. This dish is perfect too so you can try a bunch of different tacos at once. I've also shared the grande nachos with friends. It is a huge plate of chips topped with deliciousness. You can add a protein for extra cost - the chorizo is a good choice. The specialty margaritas are pretty tasty - I've tried both the mango and the strawberry and I really liked the strawberry one! My friend tried the blood orange and liked that one a lot. I'm a pretty hardcore fan of Matador restaurants. They have great drinks, amazing food, and their 21+ all the time. I mainly go to the Redmond location, but I've been to their West Seattle spot quite a few times and always have a good experience. If you're a nacho fan like myself, you cannot pass up on their steak nachos. They're MASSIVE and so incredibly delicious. If you come for happy hour they're like $5 ( unless that changed it has been about a year since I came for HH) but the portion size is insane. They recently stopped serving brunch, which is such a shame! But they still have a great lunch menu and open at 11am. The parking situation for this locale is iffy, but keep in mind you're in west seattle and parking is always a nightmare. Prices are good, drinks are STRONG!, service is acceptable. Happy hour every day! Stopped in on a Sunday to cool off with some margaritas and guacamole! Between the hours of 4-6, you can get some great deals on appetizers and drinks! Can't beat a platter of guac, pico de gallo, and tomatillo salsa for only $6! We saw three other tables with platers of the grande nachos! We will definitely be back to try those! Also, Their classic margarita was only $7, but we decided to splurge and go for a Cadillac and a blood orange margarita! Both were excellent! As for the restaurant's vibe, the decor was awesome! When we moved to Seattle from San Diego in 2019 we knew we'd be hard-pressed to find anything even remotely close to what we'd become accustomed to down south when it comes to Mexican food. Came here on the recommendation of many Yelpers here in West Seattle and was admittedly impressed with the place. I mean, the nachos are definitely legit*. Kinda bizarre decor with the gothic vibe and a fireplace, but the food (not just the nachos) and service were pretty good for quite a while. Servers who appeared to enjoy their jobs and actually make an effort to enhance the guest experience. It was a happening spot and we enjoyed being here. But then something happened. Sure, it's easy to blame Covid and the pandemic if you want, but plenty of other restaurants have risen to the occasion and done a remarkable job with operations (Cactus, to name just one) and making the most out of an uncomfortable and stressful situation for all of us. Matador seems to have lost its way and I'm starting to see it can't find its way back. The quality of food and drinks has dropped, as has the service. It feels every time we've come in in the last 4-6 months, we leave questioning why we gave it another shot. Ah, the nachos. That's right. *When they're firing on all cylinders, they're amazing. I mean, among the best we've ever had. But that's the issue, they're struggling and definitely not a well-oiled machine; not for quite a while. Not sure if it's staff turnover or simply a lack of care by the current crew, but each of the last 3 times we've returned, the nachos have come out either wrong, uncooked thoroughly (unmelted cheese or missing toppings) or significantly delayed. And by delayed I'm talking 30-40 minutes in average. For nachos. On a weekend evening, I get it. But for that reason, we come at noon, when the place is pretty empty. This last time, it was completely empty aside from us. Yet, we were met with the same experience...and an almost undrinkable cocktail this time around. Eek. The waitress seemingly forgot we were there, too. After taking our order, disappeared for a good half hour to chat up the bartender and hop on her phone. After waiting nearly 10 minutes for her to come back after she dropped the first plate of unfinished nachos, we had to go find her to ask that the order be remade. I get it, Instagram is important, but be present -- it's not a tall task. I hate to pile on, but it was close to another 40 minutes before we got the second plate - and they weren't right either. It's nachos. 40 minutes? There's a gap in the process here, and we've exhausted our patience. No mas. We've given this place multiple chances to right the ship but it's just not happening -- there's too much going sideways here to recommend this place right now. We won't be coming back anytime soon, even though I'm a sucker for the chips and salsa. Fortunately, Cactus is down the street -- and they've been doing it right from day one -- with a better view, to boot. read more

When my husband and I used to live in Seattle, we loved coming to The Matador for happy hour on Friday's but they have it every day from 4pm to 6pm and 10pm to close. My favorites off the HH menu were the quesadilla and of course the grande nachos! Ugh, you get so much for so little $. My recent visit was over 2022-23 New Years break and it was so great to visit and they did not disappoint. I had dinner plans with family so I didn't want to spoil my dinner all to much so all I ordered was the Matador Guacamole which has Pico, orange-habanero salsa Maya, quest fresco and cilantro. Talk about yum, yum! To help wash it all down, I had two absolutely delicious blood orange margaritas. My husband and I just love coming here as the staff is always great, we always find a seat at the bar and they even have a bar height indoor fire pit! They have the largest selection of tequilas that I've ever seen and they also have tv's so you can watch the Seahawks play. There is street parking only that I know of, so that sometimes can be rough but totally worth it. We can't wait for the next time we're back in Seattle to eat all our favorites. read more

I came here Monday night due to craving the black bean dip... I ordered the following : -Black Bean Dip -Empanadas -Stuffed Jalapeños - Birria Tacos -Enchiladas -Fish Tacos The black bean dip and stuffed jalapeños were delicious... I loved the extra char they added upon request. The empanadas were undercooked and had gooey doe. I sent them back and they replaced them which were still undercooked but I didn't want to hassle the waiter. The fish tacos were greatly under ratio... way too much avocado + slaw to the fried fish. You could tell they were being skimpy on the fish. I ordered the 3 enchiladas Togo, they forgot my 3rd enchilada and I had to wait an extra 15 min after we had already paid/finished our meal. No compensation was offered or even a sincere apology. To top it off the Birria Taco meat tasted like plastic... as if the meat was slow cooked in a scratched up Teflon pot while leaving a plastic spoon in it. Like.... it was so disgusting I had to waste them. After all this... still no compensation or customer retention attempted and I'm so upset I spent $200 on this meal. Embrace that night life at The Matador. One of the best LATE NIGHT happy hours in Seattle. Thank the lord it's in West Seattle. I find getting either a tasty beverage or Late night Nacho's with a taco is perfect when share some quality time with a special someone. If your waning something alcoholic then saddle up to the bar and either order a mixed drink, cerveza or slam a tequila shot. Plenty of booze to feed that young lady or kill your own sorrows but you have loads of choices. Food wise the menu is excellent. Came here for National Taco Day. They had a shrimp a la diablo special, and the tacos were amazing! Perfect combination of shrimp, spices, toppings, and sauce on a homemade tortilla. So I asked her to stop seating other parties and take care of us and she then brought her manager over. After speaking to him, he told us to leave. Worst customer service ever. You can't go wrong with the Matador and with Rosa as your server. Excellent drinks (the blood orange margarita is my favorite and I get it every single time), consistent and FLAVORFUL food (try the braised carnitas or skillet seared fajitas), and top notch service. Rosa just so happens to be our server every time my fiancé and I go in and wow, that girl is good at her craft. It's so refreshing to see someone in the service industry truly enjoy what they do!
