Bring you money clip you are going to need it, but you will never forget the event. My wife and I were ending a week long trip and decided to stay here for a few nights. The rooms here will just blow you mind away. We had a huge room with a balcony looking into the woods. We both had some spa treatments, enjoyed the relaxation rooms, and pool area. We were there on Wed and Thur during the week and had the place to ourselves. Everyone we talked to said that Fri to Sun they are packed but during the week we only noticed maybe another five groups. That made the say even better since we never found ourselves sharing anything. This was a great way to wind down the trip. The food was really great but I would expect nothing less. We eat at the restaurant both nights but I would be hard pressed to do it three nights in a row since the menu really did not change from day to day. We did eat Thr at the spa for lunch and although it was good I would not advise doing it they are going to hit you with a huge charge for a little bit of food. That is what took them down to four stars, i think they should price that a little more in line with what the real cost is. read more

Lovely location and attentive staff. However the staff are very much like those butterflies painted on the walls of the dining room; Fluttering around with no real purpose. The front of the house needs ramp up communication with those behind the scenes. I realize the this hotel was just acquired by a larger chain, but they need to get their act together. read more

Bad idea. We love this hotel and have dined or stayed here numerous times. They always seem to be changing staff though. You get to know a staff member and then they are gone! Recently they have hired a remote reservation company which I think is a bad idea. Those people don't know if you are a regular guest and it becomes very impersonal. When I call a hotel that I have stayed at before it is nice to be remembered and welcomed on the phone. I know of another hotel we frequent that had tried that service and they had to return to their front desk staff taking reservations. Impersonal reservations don't work well in boutique high end hotels. read more

Stopped in wearing a mask, just like all the guests and staff yon this gorgeous property. Old, but classy. Lobby bathroom had old locks but nice soap and lotion. I was concerned about hygiene when I tried to use the 3 different hand sanitizers at the dining room, lobby and bar area-all 3 empty! Luckily I had hand sanitizer in the car upon leaving the hotel! Stayed here with the misses over New Years. What an amazing inn! Totally secluded from society, you can really escape here. The grounds are so beautiful with a hiking path, garden, ponds, maze, labyrinth, Shakespeare garden, tea house, multiple lodges... I mean is this a fairy tale? The food is excellent, I recommend the lamb chops and the burger. But the best part is the service. Everyone here will go out of their way to make sure you have an excellent stay. From the bartender, manager, front desk, valets, to the people in the spa everyone is so friendly, professional and committed to what they do. Which brings me to the spa. This place has a rep for one of the best in the world and it did not disappoint. The facility is immaculate and beautiful, and the services were exceptional. Quite simply, the Relais and Chateaux status should be revoked from The Mayflower Inn. The inn itself continues to be a lovely place. The rooms could use a refresh, especially when compared to the beautifully designed and decorated spa; which is clearly newer and more updated than the inn itself. But that is not the issue with the Mayflower. The restaurants (the intimate bar and larger more spacious main dining room) share one menu. Which in itself is odd and disappointing. One room is casual with a piano bar atmosphere and paneled walls. The larger dining room has velvet banquettes, linen table cloths and wall sconces. The large menu contains everything from a club sandwich and macaroni and cheese, to branzino, shrimp cocktail and a veal chop. We had meals in both rooms on consecutive nights, that were presented as separate restaurants, and required individual reservations with different availabilities. The food in both rooms was served after excruciatingly long waits, plates without garnish, and uneven quality. And it happened on both nights. The restaurant manager offered an inept and sheepish apology, that failed to alleviate our frustration that we'd wasted our money, and served to confirm the fact that we would surely never return to The Mayflower Inn. read more

We were visiting friends in their summer house in Bridgewater, CT and heard great things about the Mayflower Grace so decided to take an Uber there for a dinner at the Taproom while our hosts were at a function. Great atmosphere, some terrific food and bev (esp the scallop and shrimp skewers....although adding a little greens to that plate would make sense) and the wife enjoyed their dirty martinis quite a lot. Might also add a few more simple items since this is the casual part of their restaurant. BUT most importantly, we were stuck with no cell service and no Uber apparently available in the area. Not only did multiple staff members jump to provide usable cell phones, try to see if a room was available, track down local car services, and keep following up with them but after a promised car never showed up an hour later - they went ABOVE AND BEYOND and one of the restaurant managers, David, literally drove us 20+ mins away on some fairly dark roads to get home...and this was after working there just 10 days (and at the end of a long day) and never asked for a thing. COMPLETE CLASS ACT!! Thank you, David, for making a situation that could have been extremely aggravating into one that we can laugh about and fondly recall the kindness that you and others extended to us. First night my husband and I kept trying to make it cooler in our room. Figured we were doing something wrong or the thermostat was broken. Next day called maintenance - guy told us the ac doesn't work in our building and brought us a portable ac. They couldn't have done that BEFORE we checked in? For these insane prices ac on a 90 degree day would be nice. They tried to make it up to us with champagne. Thanks but no thanks. Made an outdoor reservation a week before arriving only to be told outside is "first come first serve." Really? Then don't take reservations. If you have eight tables outside take eights reservations. Is that so difficult in a pandemic or are you trying to get your guests to eat where they are not comfortable? After 15 years we are done staying at the mayflower. Spa services were excellent although the furniture in the waiting area was stained. Pool menu much improved. read more

We had the most memorable experience this past June. We had our daughter's wedding reception at the Mayflower. Their coordinator, Ali Fodor, was a dream to work with throughout the entire planning process all the way through the wedding reception. The venue is absolutely beautiful and the food was wonderful. Beautiful location and excellent food, but the top shelf service we've experienced in the past was missing in our last two visits. We had to wave down the bartender after waiting a bit, he took the ladies orders, but didn't ask our husbands. We were seated at a nice table, but no one asked if we need our cocktails refreshed. Our waiter arrived to take our dinner order when we hadn't even had a cocktail order. During dinner we had to look for someone to ask for anything we needed instead of the staff checking on us. No one refreshed our water, had to ask for more bread, a waiter brought us someone else's dinner about 5 mins after we sat down. Our cocktails were delayed with apologies, then our dinner was delayed in coming. They were fairly busy, but it's February, not July, so there were several empty tables. They have plenty of waitstaff, but they were all milling around together near the kitchen, instead of circulated among patrons. I fault management for that. Also, most of the staff, while very sweet and polite, seem very inexperienced. The meals were still lovely & beautifully presented and the desserts were phenomenal, but very expensive pricing should come with white glove service, not run of the mill. read more

Wanted to give The Mayflower five stars, but had some issues. First the positive. Fantastic setting and beautifully landscaped. The outdoor pool was properly heated and relaxing. The Spa is top scale with inviting "Relaxation" room, indoor pool and well appointed men's locker room. The staff was very friendly. The room was spacious, warm and cozy. A great setting and location for a romantic weekend. The missing rating star was due to a couple of things. The first is minor. Upon check-in, the desk clerk asked us if we wanted the NY Times delivered to our room each morning. We stayed for three nights. There was no NYT the first or second morning. I told the desk clerk about this, who offered an apology on behalf of the Inn and promised a NYT the next morning. You guessed it- no NYT the third morning either. Again, minor in the big picture. My other issue was the hotel restaurant. The first night we ate in the formal dining room. I ordered the "aged NY rib eye" ($52). What I got was a NY strip steak that was good quality, but had no taste. The side I was told was mashed potato and some veggie. At most, the sides were a spoonful of mashed potato and a few diced mushrooms- about one mouthful. The second night we planned to eat in the Pub. There is a great porch attached to the pub and we asked if we could eat there. The answer was "no", because they had not set up for dinner on the porch- although we did see another couple eating dinner on the porch the next night. It seemed either lazy or unfriendly of the hostess to say no- since it was attached, the pub is informal and there were tables/chairs on the porch. I ordered the $24 hamburger at the pub which was again void of taste. The french fries side was very good- freshly cut potatoes. So in the end, although beautifully appointed, I would rate the restaurant/pub experience a 2-3 star restaurant. read more

I enjoy coming just to watch the elegant patrons as they enjoy there meals. This is a very high class establishment that you can take anybody to. My European friends were most impressed with the restaurant and blown away by the grounds. Here is the deal.... the food is basically good hotel quality that you find at most better hotels. Sorry to disappoint, but nothing special here and I have done brunch, lunch and dinner. Always high level, but nothing out of ordinary. The food here has gone from ok to terrible. We ate at the Tap room last night. The 28.00 Cesar salad was literally two small wedges of bib salad. You had to cut it up yourself. Not what I expect from a $$$$ restaurant. The service was terrible. Our waiter was very rude. The atmosphere is nice with the pianist- but they need to hire an excellent chef. The food doesn't match the pricy menu. The dessert was delicious. I wouldn't pay that money again when there are so many other delicious options in this area. read more

This is a gorgeous inn! I only stopped for a bite at the restaurant, which was fancier than I expected. I went in the middle of the afternoon in the middle of the week so there weren't many people there but I felt a bit out of place because I am not a fancy restaurant type person. However, the server was fantastic and kind which made me feel much more comfortable and I enjoyed myself. I had a blackberry mocktail and the carrot cake with goat cheese ice cream. The mocktail was fine- the apple cider vinegar in it was a bit much for me but the dessert was wonderful! My favorite part was that I was able to sit out on the deck and enjoy the vista of the beautiful Shakespeare garden in the back while I ate. The entire outside wall of the restaurant is windows so you can see it even from inside too! The Mayflower is, by definition, a five star restaurant. The food is great. The price is ridiculous. Between me and my date, $140. That is without wine (damn my being underage). I recommend it for big dates, like a wedding. Unless you are super rich, don't go there often. It is still a great place to go, I recommend going at least once in your life. This is a very nice inn which is grotesquely overpriced, including real rip-off long distance rates in an area that management knows has very limited cell service. The restaurant was perfectly decent but priced to be exceptional (which it wasn't), and while the inn's staff was very nice, with one or two exceptions (Carleton the waiter/bartender! and a very nice guy behind the front desk whose name I didn't get) there was a certain "anxiousness to please" missing which we've enjoyed in other far superior east coast inns in this price range, such as The Inn at Little Washington, The Chanler at Cliff Walk and, best of all, The Point up in the Adirondacks. This place is all about the spa (which my girlfriend enjoyed and said was excellent), but considering that you pay separately for just about everything there, too, the inn needs to be rated on its own merits, and I see it as worth somewhere in the $300s per night and nowhere NEAR the $700s that it charges. read more

As is now our yearly tradition, I meet my adult daughter at a location convenient for both of us -- me by car, she via train -- for a mother / daughter weekend. This year it was The Mayflower Grace, an inspiration for The Independence Inn of "Gilmore Girls" fame, a series (about a mother and daughter) that we enjoyed together when she was in high school. The physical plant is magnificent, and the staff, without exception, are extraordinary: beginning with George, who brought me tea; Grayson & Nykole & Lindsey at the front desk (which had no working printer to print directions to the train station, since WAZE wouldn't work); and Giana & Sue & Sherri & Gretchen & Carleton in the restaurant. The meals we enjoyed in the inn's "tavern" were first rate (one late night dinner, and two breakfasts). But the confounding aspect of our weekend was the condition of our room ($470+/night). The heat wasn't working (24 degrees outside in the AM); the only unused electric outlet was dead; the bedside table was broken; the H/C indicator in the shower was missing; the lampshades were frayed, the carpet stained.....the basics a guest would expect were lacking. The feather- bed topped bed wrapped us like a warm cocoon, so that was a welcome perk (however the bath towels were surprisingly small & thin). The turn down service was forgotten our first night, tho the next evening it was a lovely touch. We also enjoyed services at the Spa, essentially spending all of Saturday there. The massages were skilled and beneficial (thank you Patrice & Karen)--tho my daughter noted only one side was attended to....odd. The manicures & pedicures were radically overpriced (even by Mayflower standards), but Sara & Barbara were gracious and professional (there were no paper sandals post - pedi: only R feet had been ordered: odd). Joanne & Lise at the spa desk were welcoming and helpful (Susan had made the appts. for us by phone weeks before). Would I return? The manager, Monica Neuman, gifted me with a night for future use, after I shared our disappointments. This was following the litany of reasons she numerated why conditions had been sub-par: but "an apology with a rationalization is not an apology". I thanked her for her generous gesture, and suggested she "gift" it to Giana, a waitperson in the dining room. Giana was exceptionally kind & dear, and I sensed she could use some 'pampering'--I hope Monica "re-gifted" my night. read more

Wife and I went for a 4th of July dinner. Our expectations were very high base upon their reputation. Bar was lovely and drinks outside was great on a summer eve. The experience went down hill from there. I order a NY Strip and wife has a Capon. The Strip was over cooked, tough and grizzled. I sent it back and waited for my choice of a Capon. The staff never offered to keep my wife's plate warm. The Capon was good but the rest of the dish was a mess with no cohesiveness. Dessert was a apricot tart - fair. The check game with dessert ( never requested it ) for 171.00. You would think that they would have offered some adjustment, but the was none. Go have drinks, then go to Friendly's for a meal. Perhaps it was the Mayflower's reputation that led me to have high expectations; expectations that were not even close to met. The bar area is great. It's elegant, but comfortable. The dining room, not so much. The atmosphere, and the high school aged service staff come off as pretentious. That might be justifiable if the food was great. It is not. We had appetizers, entrees and desserts, ranging from terrible to only edible. The best part was the dessert, and even that didn't quite get there. The meal ended with their "signature" raspberry macaroons to "cleanse the palate." They were possibly the worst thing that we've ever tasted. AND all of that for $190. We will certainly return to the bar, but the restaurant is certainly not a place to which we would return; nor could we recommend it to out of town guests. :( read more

This maybe my new favorite spot in CT to go once a year for a fancy, intimate dinning experience in the county. The man decided to take me out for a nice dinner ( I love any excuse to get dolled up!) and whisked me in the car for a 35 minute drive up route 67 to this beautiful place. We arrived early so we could take a walk around the gardens and see the facility. Walking into the restaurant you feel like you arrived back in 1890 with the fire places crackling, people asking to take your coats, and offer you a drink. We were seated in a private dinning area (it gets packed more towards 8) and we arrived at 630. We had fantastic martinis, and then each ordered potato leek soup, an entree and a delish dessert. The menu changes weekly, so theoretically you can go there an never have the same thing! I recommend going in October like us, the had a fall inspired menu, and the scenery was amazing. I hope he surprises me for a night away here, i am dying to check out why this is rated Americas #1 destination spa =) read more

The location is lovely and relaxing. The service is good, the food is dissappointing. I ordered a $20 sandwich which was served on burnt (was actually black) toast. I've eaten here many times over the years. The food has never been outstanding but seems to have gotten worse. If you must go....go for a drink when the weather is good and eat elsewhere. read more

Very disappointed. Got a call before l arrived that no therapist was available after l booked a treatment 3 months ago. Then, l get a confirmation by email that had the wrong dates of arrival and departure. Hopefully, when l get there things will get better. read more
