We visited the Lost Fox Inn during the annual Litchfield Restaurant Week and it was a terrific choice! When you walk through the entrance, you walk under a sign Tavern 1745. That caught my attention. I'm a great lover of historic buildings. This one has enjoyed several different lives, but the newest iteration opened in 2024. The owners have paid close attention to many details that show they value the history of the building - from the furniture in the multiple small dining rooms to the reproduction wallpaper on the walls. I loved the use of large candles in the fireplaces to replicate the light of a fire. Our meals were from the Prix Fixe Menu for $50 per person. I was delighted to see later that Lost Fox Inn advertises a Prix Fixe Menu on Thursdays for $60 per person. I enjoyed the Corn Chowder soup appetizer, which was different from any chowder I've ever eaten but very flavorful. My main course was Orecchiette, a delightful maitake and shiitake mushroom pasta dish that is flavored with lemon, pecorino Romano, rosemary, oregano and topped with breadcrumbs. Dessert was a chocolate mousse topped with pickled blackberry and mint. Really delicious. We booked an early dinner and were delighted to find that we were the only ones seated in our small dining room. As the hour progressed, more and more people filled the room, and interestingly each group took advantage of the restaurant week menu (many of the items are on the regular dinner menu). Love the rustic feel of this place. Tris a few tho ha. Baby romaine salad good, loved the bay romaine. We also tried the mussels They were tender and delicious but the broth fell flat. We then tried the orecchiette pasta which was delicious, the. We tried the steak Frits delicious. Chocolate mousse was the real deal so good. Service was good. Disappointing Experience for the Price - Not Worth the Drive We made the trip to The Lost Fox Inn's tavern/restaurant in Litchfield expecting a special, upscale meal in a historic setting, but unfortunately, it fell short of expectations--especially given the cost. The entrées ranged from $32 to $42 (before tax), which felt very steep for what was delivered. While the historic building and cozy fireside ambiance are charming and unique, the food and overall value didn't justify the premium pricing. Portions and quality were decent but nothing exceptional that would make me rush back or recommend it as a destination spot. The no-tipping policy is clearly stated (prices include gratuity as they pay staff a living wage, with tipping optional), but it felt strange in practice--almost like it removed the usual incentive for attentive service. Our server was friendly enough but provided what I'd call standard pub-level attention: basic, somewhat slow, and lacking the polished training you'd expect at this price point. It came across as understaffed or inexperienced in fine-dining touches. Overall, if you're local and just want a casual bite in a pretty setting, it might be fine on a quieter night. But as a special outing or worth driving out of your way for? I'd say pass--there are better value options in the area for similar or less money. They pay their staff a living wage so request no tipping. Our waitress was terrific and very knowledgeable. The menu had great options for upscale dining without being pretentious. Wine choices were interesting w "skin contact" as a category. They'll need to explain. Food was well prepared and presented. I got halibut and my daughter had brisket. I haven't been here since it was the Tollgate, where I was very well hydrated but it took forever to be served. Not a problem at the Lost Fox. The parking area is a bit of a free for all, and can be muddy when wet. But it's really a short walk to one of the two front doors. Dining is upstairs and downstairs, and both levels have at least two single restrooms with amazing wallpaper. I went for restaurant week, which is not their regular menu but the food was amazing. The cod with caviar was cooked to perfection, and the brussel sprouts were shredded to where I didn't automatically recognize them but the taste was amazing. The chocolate brownie dessert was chocolately to where it almost was fudge, and the marshmallows were good sizes with a bit of toast. Also, yes, there is a farm across the street. ORIGIN: With the opening of Lost Fox Inn on Friday, July 26th, there is a new destination hotel AND restaurant in the Litchfield Hills that is both steeped in local history and nestled in a quintessential New England woodland setting. The main building got its start as the Captain William Bull Tavern in 1745, and had already been rescued once before with a relocation from Bull's original farm to its present site along Torrington Road. The community has been following the recent efforts of its current owners, and were invited to preview the product of this undertaking during a Saturday afternoon open house. It takes an uncommon combination of vision, knowledge, time, and financial resources to take on such a challenge, and I am likely not alone in being grateful to the friendly couple-- Eliza Clark and Tim Trojian -- and their fellow investors for preserving and highlighting Litchfield's past, while contributing to its future. LOCATION: The inn is nestled in a wooded landscape along the side of a road that connects the town of Litchfield with the city of Torrington. In this way it is an ideal location to both experience and explore Litchfield Hills/the "North West Corner", whether staying overnight or looking for a special dinner destination, as it is centrally located. LODGING EXPERIENCE: Beautifully decorated and unusually large rooms make for a restful overnight stay. DINING EXPERIENCE: Started with warm house made bread paired with saucers of slices of radish, and churned butter and ground rosemary mixed with salt flakes. Talk about a 10/10 experience! We really enjoyed our meal at Lost Fox Inn. For a new restaurant, the staff really has it together, from the incredible service to the talented chef. My husband and I had a wonderful date night here - the dining room is small, but dimly lit, so it still felt private. The vibe is perfect for Litchfield, and the owners did a fantastic job of keeping the colonial charm in the renovations they did to this 1740s home. So many creative dishes to choose from on the menu, with some of our favorites being the lamb kofta appetizer and sticky toffee pudding dessert special. The food was absolutely delicious and Chelsea was fabulous server and very helpful with providing recommendations. The food came out quickly. We had the Lobster & Crab Bisque ( full of lobster & crab meat)and shared the Devils on Horseback (method dates, Stilton cheese, almonds wrapped in bacon) appetizers; Nova Scotia Halibut (which was cooked perfectly light & flakey) and the Shepherds Pie for our main) and we shared a crème burlee with cubes of apple and pear and pine nuts on top. We had dinner reservations here Friday evening at 6. We arrived early to have a cocktail at the bar. Nice cocktail hour from 4-5 with special prices on select beverages and appetizers. Loved the Frozen Orchard cocktail and local beer. For dinner we sat on the second floor. Every room has a fireplace which enhanced the overall atmosphere of the property. We happen to love rustic decor/antiques and restaurant and rooms were beautiful. Appetizers of crab cake devils on horseback were delicious! We both had the coconut curry cod with jasmine rice and it was perfectly balanced with heat and light coconut flavor. Our server Noah was delightful and attentive without being overbearing. A fantastic addition to the regional dining scene. This is by far my favorite spot in the area. Housed in a historic tavern, the ambiance is cozy, warm, and inviting. The owners did a phenomenal job of preserving the historic charm (think multiple wood burning fireplaces, original wood floors and cozy low ceilings) while adding modern touches (just right lighting, moody dark paint paired with beautiful wallpaper featuring pops of pattern and color). Make sure you come early enough to enjoy a handcrafted cocktail at the bar. Then, be prepared to be blown away by the food. The evolving menu features seasonal ingredients artfully composed to crate a well balanced menu offering. We had a wonderful experience at the Lost Fox Inn. We were seated near the fireplace on a frigid evening, the historic ambiance of the room was perfect. The entire staff was extremely pleasant and helpful, although it was our first visit since the change of ownership we were treated like old friends. We started with the House Smoked Trout Rillette and Roasted Delicata Squash, both were delicious. Our main courses were the Shrimp Tagliatelle and New York Strip; the steak was beautifully seasoned and cooked to perfection while the shrimp tagliatelle was a great combination of shimp and pasta with just enough spice to warm the soul. There's no reason to go anywhere else in the region. Their service and quality is unmatched. Previously we visited for dinner and then returned to spend the weekend to celebrate a birthday. It's one of the few places we really hated to leave. The breakfast was fresh and hot coffee was available throughout the day. Dinner was amazing, too. We even left another restaurant on the 2nd night to return for drinks and dessert. The staff were happy to accommodate us even though it was getting late. The room was also elegant and comfortable, but the best part really was the staff, who always made us feel welcome. We are looking forward to returning as soon as the event season over. Lovely, warm atmosphere and friendly professional service (thank you Michael). However, the food is a diappointment. We ordered a Harvest Board as a starter for the table ($30.00). It had an uninteresting and very small array of items. One or two were unidentifiable, but a delicious 8 inch , warm baquette. Too little for too much. We requested more bread for which we were charged an additional $3.00. No butter, no olive oil. The drinks were a bit of an eye opener. One of us ordered a scotch ($18.00) and requested "rocks" for which he was charged an extra $3.00. For Ice!!!!. The martini ($17.00), and the cosmopolitan ($17.00), were served in glasses that were so small the owners should be embarrassed. The size was more like the sip you would receive when asking to taste a wine. The menu was limited, but many fine restaurants have limited selections for good reason. For our mains we ordered a risotto ($38.00), trout ($45.00), and cod ($48.00). The risotto was fine. The trout was okay and the cod just short of awful. The cod was swimming (no pun intended) in a bowl of what could pass for a bean and escarole soup that had an odd flavor. The cod was completely lost. I recognize that "taste" is very individual, but we four are resonably sophisticated diners. We ordered a lemon custard ($17.00) for dessert to share. It was so gussied up that the custard was lost as you worked your way through all the other unnecessary "embellishments" in it, which were discordant. We left it unfinished. The prices we high, but the menu makes a point of telling you that their staff is well paid and tipping is optional but unnecessay. So, the prices could fairly be dicounted by whatever your customary tip percentage is. While we wish the proprietors success, as we do anyone brave enough to own a restaurant, we were so disappointed in our dinner that we are not anxious to return anytime soon. read more

We will definitely be coming back! It was perfect for gluten free dining! We loved the 1700's ambiance. Sitting next to the fire on a cold winter day was perfect. The server was attentive and knowledgeable. The mocktails were refreshing and the perfect balance of sweet. For appetizers, we got the beet salad, delicata squash salad, and dates. Everything had such fresh flavors. For entrees, we got the steak and the burger. The steak was very tender but did have more fat than I would have liked. The tallow potatoes were perfectly crispy and delicious. The sauce was lacking flavor, but it was still good. I would have also preferred if the asparagus were prepared in a different way, the ends were a bit tough and it was kind of hard to eat. The burger was a double patty and delicious. Portion sizes were perfect, we left feeling comfortably full. If you have a gluten allergy, there were so many options and the server was very knowledgeable. Great all-around experience for a 70th birthday dinner with 3 people. Staff was extremely attentive. Food was amazing. We split the harvest board and we all ordered the halibut - everyone was impressed, and I felt it was the best-cooked piece of halibut I'd in a long time. Downstairs has an intimate eat-in bar and charming back dining room with banquets. We loved our dinner and the very attentive service. Cocktails and wine list are great. Ordered several first courses, all were delicious including the harvest board pâtés and the mushroom tart. Main course was incredible- the halibut hands down was the best cooked piece of fish I have had since I can remember... fresh ginger, green curry and spiced to perfection. We are surprised to see so many favorable reviews as we do not share those opinions. Certainly the house is beautiful and certainly bills itself as a Class A restaurant. We arrived expecting to have a fabulous evening. Instead we had a very poor experience there. We were a party of four in early May. To start, having to return a signature cocktail to the bar was bad enough. All four meals were very poorly plated. Only the vegan plate labeled a 'risotto', was actually sent back to the kitchen. It was actually not risotto, but a grain. The trout dish was un recognizable under the all the sauce. Though it was tasty. It was just hard to find. The duck was down right unappetizing, as was the simple cheese plate appetizer. The mussels were picked over. We had ordered champagne, and had to return one bottle to the kitchen because it was too warm! No host or owner visited the table, which one would have expected after sending back a cocktail. So we thought maybe the chef and bartender had called in sick that day. It was a poor, extremely expensive, and disappointing experience. The waiter did know we were not enjoying the meal and one might have expected an inquiring call from the owner or manager the next day. But no. Too bad, as it is a charming building. read more

My fiance and I had a wonderful meal at Lost Fox Inn tonight for our anniversary. We enjoyed our evening from the moment we drove on property and pulled around driveway. Walking in, you are immediately absorbed in the ambience of a 1700's inn. We were sat upstairs, so we got to look through several rooms before getting to our table, located in a large open room with a large gas fireplace. The voices from other tables definitely carry in the room but it was as expected in such an environment. The cocktails were well mixed and the steak tartare, pork belly, and lobster bisque were all top notch. My fiance loved the Cornish game hen, particularly the polenta and brussels set it was served on. My ribeye was cooked perfectly and the watercress and carrots set was perfectly paired. We finished up with a chocolate and pear "candy bar" and a sticky toffee cake. While the chocolate and pear dessert was delicious, the cardamom sauce on the toffee cake was amazing. It was the perfect way to end the meal. Vanessa and support staff provided great service and covered everything we needed, while the manager Mike made sure everything was as memorable as could be for our anniversary celebration. I have a few people at work waiting for feedback after showing pictures of the location and I'll certainly be recommending they try it for themselves.
