We just moved out this way and happened to spot this place while driving by. So glad we decided to give it a try! It was raining the first time we came, so getting from the dirt parking lot to the front door turned into a fun little game of dodging puddles. The second you walk in, you're greeted by some of the sweetest staff. The cozy country atmosphere is full of fun, quirky décor that gives you something new to notice while you're waiting for your food. Speaking of the food...everything we tried was so good that we ended up bringing more family back for a second visit. The baked taters are HUGE and definitely filling. The green beans have the perfect sweet-and-savory flavor, and apparently the mac and cheese is a winner too because my son finishes it every single time before I can even sneak a bite! They also have plenty of seating, so even with a group, there's room to spread out. This is the original location--a tin building north of downtown Magnolia TX. A little hard to get to is approaching from the north, and a fairly small parking lot. Same menu as it's counterpart in Montgomery about 6 miles away. Excellent brisket--tender and moist without being fatty. Serve yourself drinks. They offer a deep fried baked potato that has converted the potato into "potato skins" -- its a great innovation. Interior is fairly industrial, mainly metal chairs. Overall their Monthomery location is a little more polished as a restaurant, with booths and better acoustics and parking. Food seems identical. read more

My cousin is doing her no carb diet, so we decided to check out this bbq restaurant by the high school. Just right pass the bridge, quick right into their parking lot. Restaurant is spacious inside, patio seating available in multiple rooms. Big menu with variety to choose. We decided on 3 meat platter, ribs were delicious. Brisket came in 2 options, dry or moist. Moist was the best and very flavorful. Turkey reminded me of Thanksgiving. Paired perfectly with the baked beans. Order at the counter and the server will bring the food out to you. As a sixth generation Texan who grew up eating barbecue in this fine state I feel confident in my five star review of this establishment. The brick and mortar may be rustic and simple, but the food is fabulous. Today I had the barbecue potato. It was prepared Buddy's way which means they deep fried the potato before filling it with brisket, cheese, sour cream. chives, and upon request some burnt ends. I don't know if I can ever have a barbecue potato prepared any other way now. My hubby thoroughly enjoyed his brisket sandwich. They have daily specials with everything from ribs to Frito pie. Make sure you try the barbecue sauce. It is an interesting blend of sweet with a little bite. If you have room, make sure and try some of their homemade desserts. The dining room is small, but they also have a private room off to the side if you're looking for a meeting space. Drinks included everything from iced tea, lemonade to a soda fountain. Service was fabulous and they bring your food to the table. Magnolia is a small town but a barbecue place like this should put it on the map. We were a group of 6 dining here for lunch after the Renaissance festival and unfortunately none of us left happy. It is a big spot with plenty of seating and was maybe 1/3 full. Was told at the register they had run out of chicken and potatoes - sad but ok since we were pretty hungry. We ordered four burgers(all the same), pulled pork, macaroni, and queso with pulled pork. 3 of the four burgers were cold to the touch. 1 of them didn't have any vegetables at all. The flavor of the burgers was mediocre at best - really underwhelming. The queso with pulled pork... well I will let the picture speak for itself. Room temp queso and cold pork lol In terms of service, the staff we interacted with were lively and nice. We did notice throughout our experience that multiple customers were going up to the register to ask and wait for their food. We think it is because many people were being served their food shortly after coming in and others that had been there a while were still waiting on their dishes. I really wanted to love The Meating Place, really I did. Special event evening with chorus group, ordered our food; Turkey sandwich Bacon cheese burger Side order of fries And a can of beer. Cashier reads the order back to me, paid by card, $10 cash tip and put the receipt in the jar as per the chorus group instructions. Had a Meating Place koozie AND a free beer token so we we're all set... Very nice, but underage, girl had to call chief to hand me the beer. Wife's turkey sandwich comes out 10 minutes later, my fries come out 15 minutes later... but no burger. I ask about the burger and they have no record of it on the ticket. I'm asked if I'd like to pay for a burger (again?). I respectfully decline and get another beer to help me sort this out on my credit card. Sure enough the total doesn't include the burger. I'll take partial blame for not checking the receipt before putting it in the jar, but the cashier repeated the order to me including my burger. Oh well, it was time to leave and I didn't feel like waiting for what I ordered nearly an hour before. Disappointing visit for me, wife's turkey sandwich was ok and the fries are fabulous. I really miss The Grove (same location) and will try the Meating Place again someday... maybe. Made a trip to Houston and The Meating Place was highly recommended. Food was...unexplainably yummylicious! Best BBQ I've ever put in my belly. Tried all meats, they just melted in my mouth. Lady at the counter was very helpful and had tons of patience, explained everything, so kind...true southern hospitality-cheers! I came here for breakfast with some friends that had been before and raved about it, and it did not disappoint. The breakfast menu isn't huge, but it has something for everyone, and enough to make it really hard to choose what to get. My one recommendation - get something that comes with a biscuit. These things are incredible, and our table got the last one of the day at about 9:30am (breakfast menu is still served an hour after this), so you know they must be delicious if they are that sought after by patrons. I went for the biscuits with sausage gravy, and it was suggested I get the "half order" based on how big it is. Well, let me tell you, the half order takes up an entire plate, and I could only eat even half of that, so more power to you folks that get the full order! Others at the table got the breakfast melt and the breakfast platter, both of which looked great. I would certainly come back in the future to try out more (and get another biscuit).
