Great food. We ordered the mushroom-Swiss burger, the melty Mac, the mini Mac (for our 3 year old), the tomato soup, the steak and cheese, and lemonades for all. The lemonades are refreshing and delicious. The mini Mac was the perfect portion for our three year old. He had 3 pieces left and said he was full. Our picky 8 year old even liked his Mac and cheese. Though the breadcrumbs may have been a little too fancy for him (insert eye roll here). The burger was good, a sweet aioli sauce could really add a lot to it. Spill it over onto your size of fries, another thing you're not supposed to eat. I cook a lot, and if I'm allowed to say, I cook pretty damn well. I cook almost daily and I do take care of my health, but goddammit if I don't stop in a moment of hesitation every time I see or read the words "mac" and "cheese" and "burger" together. Ooooooo god help me. So, when am I going to talk about the food? Well, I kind of am already in a way. If you're not a fan of stories or nostalgia, then sorry. Carrying on... The food was, as you probably might have guessed, passable (pun intended). The chicken sandwich burger thing was clearly not something you come here to eat, so ignore that. For what it's worth, it was fine. It had cheese on it though so that kind of canceled out the the whole "healthy" thing. It wasn't dry though and tasted fine so if you come here and for whatever reason thing you want something that won't kill you before you walk out the door, then you can get this. The burger add bacon was pretty good. Messy more for appearance than for necessity, which is annoying because I believe messy food is better than fancy food, but when you purposely make it messy when it's actually not, that takes away from the equation. Meat was clean and didn't leave a weird after taste. Thumbs up. The bacon was thick and had good flavor. Thumbs up. The fries were...fries. Thumbs whatever. Service was odd. Friendly but maybe too friendly. Too casual. But hey, better than rude. Dining area is cold so your cheese will harden quickly so eat fast and GTFO. Nothing here is impressive, but it's not bad either. Price is a bit (too) high for the taste but I assume the quality of the meat is what you're paying for. I dunno. It was just another burger/sandwich shop with hipster targeted marketing and prices to match. I won't say that The Melt is crossed off my list, but it's definitely more forgettable than other places we've been to. The Melt - La Jolla truly has one of the best Angus & Wagyu Beef Burgers I've ever had. It's on my Top 10 List for sure. I had the Swiss & Shroom, described as having Melted Swiss, Fresh Spinach, Grilled Mushrooms, Crispy Onions, and Aioli on an Artisan Bun. One forgotten item, the crispy onions, made me deduct a star. Even though I didn't notice the crispy onions were missing until near the end of eating my burger because it was THAT good, the crispiness of onions would've sent the burger to the top of my list. While they don't ask how you'd like your burger done, they're done to a medium-well & come out nicely juicy. It's a place your order, get a pager, then find a place to sit down kind of place. Their claim to fame is the Grilled Cheese, which carries the show all alone with its 3-Cheeses, consisting of Sharp Cheddar, Muenster, & Fontina. A hearty & tasty blend that melts well. They also have Chicken Melts, Tomato Soup, Salads, Desserts & Craft Sodas. The craft root beer was extremely delicious, with a good 'head' on it. Something called Naked Fries is unique with their signature Melt spice, or can also be smothered in their Creamy Cheddar, Fontina & Provolone blend, then topped with Bacon & Crispy Onions. A Kid's Menu has several adult offerings on a smaller scale for only $4.99 each. Not extremely impressed by their *Steak & Cheese* grilled cheese sandwich. Steak was finely chopped and tasted dry and grainy. I guess this is their take on a Philly Cheese Steak hence the chopped steak, but just wasn't feeling it. Not as cheesy as I would have preferred either. Did not realize this would have jalapenos, but they are pickled and actually didn't taste too spicy to me. Regardless, I hate pickles and that's what it reminded me of. Large restaurant, plenty of seating, lots of UCSD students, and a cool method for ordering via ApplePay (see picture!). I haven't been in this plaza for some time, but would frequent it during my UCSD days. My gawd, it has completely transformed! First came here for a yelp event and was so impressed I came back today to visit again and brought my husband and my friends! I said I was going to come back for the milkshakes and I wasn't joking. We drove here tonight because I really wanted a vanilla malted milkshake. I brought my friends with me and got them both Oreo malted milkshakes, my husband got the double chocolate flavor. I also ordered the trio mac n cheese with caramelized onions on top and some sweet potato fries no cheese. My friend got the basic grilled cheese with tomato soup, and her husband got the meltburger with avocado, bacon, and egg added. My friend also got a chocolate chip cookie. Just as last time all the milkshakes were delicious and I still think vanilla with malt added is the best flavor choice. Hubby enjoyed dipping his sweet potato fries into it, but that was weird to me. Both my friends agreed the Oreo flavor was delicious. She also said her grilled cheese and tomato soup was delicious however she said the chocolate chip cookie tasted salty for some reason and wasn't a fan. My friend's husband ordered his burger with an egg added and didn't realize it was runny. They redid the whole burger for him even though we were only asking for another egg. The marketing manager happened to come over to our table and ask how things were going when I was up asking them about the egg (which was not their fault at all, it was his for not realizing it) but they were super cool and she redid his whole burger. He said it was yummy and they both are coming back in the future as well. Take my word for it: order the trio mac n cheese with caramelized onions on top, it's freaking amazing. Tried the original burger- great tasting 5 oz party on a brioche roll. Surprised to see it come out medium rare / medium in temperate which is a real surprise for a chain. $8.50 starts to get a little steep (thank you Shake Shack) but you ain't gonna complain about the quality here. Mini pickle had some great flavor going on too so I'll have to say a return trip would be fun. Wanted to try the melt since the reviews were good. As we walked in, no one said hi. The employee at the front continued to ask what we wanted and wanted us to repeat ourself, which could of been the masks, could of been how busy and loud it was. The store itself had a musty smell. We really wanted to try the burgers that were photographed because they looked delicious. We ordered the BBQ Burger, sweet potatoe fries, regular fries, and side Mac and cheese; and a fountain soda. When we went to fill up the soda all the fountain drinks sprayed sugar water all over, leaving it sticky. I asked the employee to check it out and he said oh do you want a canned soda instead. We waited around for awhile which was fine because it was busy. When we got our food the bottom of the dine in trays were full of grease, leaving your hands greasy. The burgers were good, nothing special as the photos made them out to be. The regular fries were cold, seemed like they were sitting out for awhile. The sweet potato fries were a mix between hot and cold. The Mac and cheese is was terrible, overdone noodles, with semi melted cheese on top, that had zero taste to it, that we didn't even finish it. We attempted to get a soda again at the end of the meal, and nothing was done about the soda fountain being broken, and again once asked about it, the employee didn't apologize, just seemed to busy to even check it out. We tried The Melt in La Jolla for the first time last week, and it was INCREDIBLE! I happen to love pickles and jalapeños and was floored to see they have a burger made with a jalapeno-pickle mix, mixed right into the Angus-Wagyu burger. (I had never had a burger with Wagyu beef, and it was so amazingly good - tender and flavorful). The jalapeño-pickle mix was so flavorful, and not too spicy. Plus... I happen to love pickles, and can be quite picky about them, and their pickle on the side was awesome - perfectly flavored and crisp. Next time, I will be asking for extra pickles. To make it even better, they have Gluten Free buns, and the buns are really, really good (I have had to be GF for several years and love to find good GF places). I learned they also offer GF bread for their other kinds of sandwiches. We also got to try their regular fries and sweet potato fries. They were both seasoned to perfection, and the sweet potato fries had an extra crispness on the outside. Will definitely be ordering those again! The one downside is parking, because it is a busy lot (the Whole Foods parking lot near the 5 and Nobel) - so just allow a few extra minutes to get in and out. It is soooooo worth it! read more

I first tried The Melt at Stanford Shopping Center and really liked it so I was glad that I found one in La Jolla near UCSD. One of the great things is that this place is open late so it's def good for college students. What I got - Patty Melt (5/5): It's like if you made a burger but instead of buns it's just regular bread. I think this one goes well with yellow mustard and the sandwich itself has a nice ratio of bread, melted cheese, and meat to it. -Cheddar Bacon Ranch Fries (4/5): These were pretty good. I felt like they added A LOT of bacon to it but these fries are really really nice and crispy! I've also had their mac and cheese grilled cheese, which is honestly of my favorite things to get from here.
