Date night, Bryan and I were getting ready to watch a movie at the AMC in La Jolla. After getting some sweets at Sprinkles we saw The Melt, we didn't want to eat the food from the AMC, so we decided to give them a try. I am so glad we did, we didn't know The Melt was for patty melts, that's our favorite! Since it was our first time here we decided to share the Patty Melt ($8.49) and made it a combo with adding bacon florentine mac n cheese ($4.99) and a mint chocolate chip milkshake ($4.99), you save a little by making a combo! The food came out so quickly and I was so eager to try it. I had a bite of the mac and cheese first and oh my god, it was so so good! The bacony goodness gave me so much life! Next, the patty melt, the onions were perfectly caramelized and you can definitely taste the mustard on the toast, plus the patty was the perfect temp! I am salivating just thinking about it. Bryan agreed that it was good and mentioned that he'd get his own next time we come, haha! He did mention that the shake was a little bland but it was more so to deter me from having any because it was so freaking good. My husband brought food from the melt for me for dinner. I really enjoyed my sandwich and fries. It was delicious. Mostly the fries are we're really good. Also, the snickerdoodle shake has me addicted. I go back for the shake all the time and can't help getting fries as well. The shops does get pretty crowded so I like to have my food to go and eat at home. Parking is hard to find but there is a lot. The food and the service is great. If you go, definitely try a shake. I know I'm hooked on the snickerdoodle but I hear the other flavors are great too. Depending on your preference I'm sure you'll enjoy whatever flavor you choose. Average at best. I ordered a burger with the fries and soda. The burger seemed to be extra greasy, so much so that when I picked up the tray it was already seeping out and got on my hands. The burger flavor was rather bland, and because they use extra amounts of cheese, it's just dripping with grease. The bun quickly became soggy. It almost like they're making up for the lack of flavor by just trying to add more cheese...but it doesn't work. The fries were ok, but they had some seasoning on them that took away from the flavor in my opinion. Finally the craft soda was a let down, one flavor was simply not functioning, and the others were quite lacking in carbonation, like a soda bottle left open. Imagine my surprise when I bite into my burger and get a huge mouth full of jalapenos... To make matters worst they put the cheese ON TOP of the jalapenos so in order to remove them I had to lose the cheese too... Which is really really disappointing. After scraping the jalapenos off, I ate the patty and it was honestly so bland, like they didn't put any salt/pepper or anything on the meat... I finally made here. There's always so many places to visit. I'm a huge fan of patty melts, so much so I have dedicated a "Yelp List" to them, and of course I ordered one here with a side Caesar salad as well. There patty melt is a little different in that they spread a high grain mustard on theirs, in lieu of the traditional Thousand Island dressing. I liked the mustard on this particular melt. I really wanted them to temp my melt at a medium rare to medium temp, but they could not do so as per health code regulation. I did not understand this given there were already a number of pictures upload by other with a medium rare temp. Anyways.. As a result, the grilled Angus & Wagyu burger patty was not as juicy as I would of like. The meat was overcooked in my opinion but it was tasty. The sweet caramelized onions were very tasty and tender to the touch. I really liked the combination of melted Swiss and provolone cheese. They did a very good job on developing crust on the outside of the artisan bread. I good crunch is always a good thing when chomping into a patty melt's bread. The side Caesar salad was pretty simple and so was its dressing, but I thought the mini grilled cheese croutons were quite creative and tasty little morsels. It was such a treat to go to the Melt it wasn't what I expected. I just assumed it was fast food however I was mistaken it was really good food that was cooked to order. I ordered the SWISS 'N' SHROOM MELTBURGER Which consisted of Angus and wagyu beef, filled with Swiss cheese, grilled mushrooms onions and spinach. The burger was perfectly cooked it was moist it was juicy and just plain delicious. In addition I had the chopped cobb salad with Romaine, cheddar, grilled chicken, tomato, pickled onions, bacon w/ caesar. This was a meal by itself also delicious and I was stuffed at this point. Did I mention the bacon there was ever so much bacon on my salad which I loved. Of course I had to go the extra mile and order a milkshake. This too was extremely good and highly recommended. I stopped in for lunch on a Wednesday around 1130a. The Melt is located right next to Philz, Sprinkles, and in the same shopping center as Whole Foods. If you are familiar with the area, then you know to avoid this place during weekdays for lunch because traffic and parking are very scarce. If you do decide to brave the traffic, then I highly advise you to park near Nordy's Rack. It's a short walk and less headache. As I walked in, there was indoor and outdoor seating, clean, and modern. I didn't know what to order, but as soon as I approached the counter I decided on the combo meal mushroom burger (swiss, mushroom, spinach), tomato soup, and double chocolate milkshake. Of note was that there are individual prices for each food item, but no prices listed for the "combo" that is advertised on the board as "Make it a Combo & Save". I specifically ordered the combo and the lady behind the counter mumbled my total of $17.37. Hmmm, not sure if there was a savings but if I calculated it right, I only saved about 50 cents. Anyways, the food was great - tasty burger, yummy milkshake, and decent tomato soup. I enjoyed my meal as a once in while treat, but $17 was pretty hefty for my lunch. So, when I saw this restaurant nestled in next to the FedEx I often frequent, I knew I'd fabricate a reason to visit the area, just to try their food. The girl at the counter was patient as we stood there, staring at the menu board, trying to decide what to get. In the end, I went with the "egg in a hole" combo (because tomato soup is always a yes for me), and my co-worker decided on the three cheese classic (also with the soup combo). Our food was served on a metal tray lined with paper - not fancy, but it really doesn't have to be. The cheese was gooey and stringy, and the bread was perfectly crispy at the edges, moist in the middle (where all the cheese and the egg lined up). The combo option isn't necessarily cheaper. For an order of a grilled cheese + fries + root beer float, you end up saving only 30 cents. Make sure to get the most for money and ask for the free toppings to spice up your grilled cheese. =Food= Patty Melt (4.5/5) Although I wished the patty was bigger, it is a consistently tasty option. Juicy and slightly sweet from the onions. Despite the taste, the nearly $9 price tag is steep considering other options are more filling and cheaper. Steak & Cheese (2.5/5) Should be renamed to steak and jalapenos because this sandwich was stuffed with the pickled pepper. We've gotten items separated, forgotten and cold as a result. Especially with the float, the ice cream was often a shake by the time it arrived. More attentiveness should go towards the overall cleanliness. Pagers are greasy and tables are sticky. The bathroom often has a tower of used paper towels in a corner. While it's hard to find time to clean up, these issues occurred regardless of the time of day. Ordered the double melt with bacon and grilled onions. Definitely juicy and cooked perfectly. The bacon used was nice sized and the grilled onions were done right. Enjoyed the pickle that was included on the side. I also ordered sweet potatoes fries. I really enjoyed the seasoning they put on them. My only gripe is I wish the container was bigger. First time ordering from them, using door dash my order was here in 15 minutes. My food was hot and sealed with special sticker tape so my delivery driver couldn't sample my food. The price was right, definitely going to try other items on the menu. Had to eat my burger in 2 takes, definitely large and in charge. Definitely better than my usual In N Out 4x4.
