I kept driving by this spot at night and have been meaning to try it. First I love that they're open til 2 a.m. cause hella places close too early in Oakland. This place is a hit and miss for me. First time, the original melt burger was very good and juicy. So good with the jalapeño topping. Perfectly medium. Second time, it was overcooked and dry. It had no jalapeño & pickle mix on the melt burger. Lady asked if we want jalapeño and we said yes. Of course we ordered to go. We noticed it at home when biting 1/4 way through and noticed it didn't taste nothing like before. We didn't want to drive 20 minutes to go back for corrections. Tasted bland without it. The outdoor patio was a great spot to eat and watch the world go. The sodas are unique and tasty and the food is delicious. I'm grateful this location is open late. The people working were friendly and professional. It had a clean lobby. The food tho. The burger I got had a patty way over cooked, dry and gross. There were 5 tiny fried onion strings and a small dot of sauce. My friend's burger sat for almost 10 min without their pager not going off. Their burger was grey on outside but super pink on the inside and the same with poor quantity of toppings. Fries were cold. There weren't many people there, so the staff was not rushed to make the food. Neither of us finished our food. Other locations I've been to had me craving more...this location, this experience was not on par. Bummer. read more

I have occasionally had to wait because the place is constantly busy, but it is well worth it. So I pulled up The Melt at 12:48am but it could have been any time of day. The dining room was open, everything was fully stocked and the staff was ready to get us going. I ordered The Melt Burger because I like to "try it how they make it" when I'm visiting for the first time. It's a basic burger, with beef, cheddar, special sauce and a jalapeño, pickle slaw type deal. I also ordered the garlic parm fries. We ordered for dine-in and sat facing the kitchen. My friend had the strawberry lemonade, and it must have been good, because he finished before we even got our food. Our food came hot, and we dug in. The staff took time to check in on us and ask about our experience. The burger was juicy, fries were crispy and overall I had a great burger and experience. For sure gonna go again. My friend got one of the mac & cheese sandwiches what she said was astounding. But I think above everything, the croutons that came with the soup were quite possibly some of the best I've ever had. they were, in essence, a grilled cheese sandwich cut up into little croutons. There is simply no handoff between cook and dispatcher and it results in 40+ min wait times to obtain food that has already been prepared and is just sitting on the counter. It's not a bad burger. But was it worth the hour it just took me to get it? Absolutely not. Friday night, the line to order was long so I placed an order through yelp/grubhub, felt smug and sat down. Pro tip: don't order through grubhub. 10 mins later, the app told me the order was ready so I walked 10 feet to the pick-up window to see several customers crowded around the area anxiously looking from their phones to the window. We all had been notified that our orders were ready but the woman behind the counter who was drowning in unbagged containers of burgers, said these orders were not complete and that she would call out all orders, even the food app orders, once they were ready. She continued to hand ready orders to customers who had ordered in store. I saw a burger carton on the counter with my name on it but my fries were not there. I sat down, content to wait for fresh fries. I watched all the people who came in after me, get their orders and depart. 30 minutes after I ordered, my fries were still not up, tired and hungry and sure my burger was now cold, I went to the register to request a refund. The manager? apologetically told me he could not process a refund for my order but could remake my food. I get it. It's Friday night, they got slammed. We are all doing the best we can. I'm still hungry so I agree to this remedy. They remake my burger, place it on the counter and it is again getting cold awaiting my fries. 10 mins later, the manager finally tells someone to drop two baskets of cut potatoes into the fryer. My fries come up. I watch a worker add the smallest pinch of parmesan cheese to my garlic fries; It's so small that the woman working the pickup counter takes them back to food prep and adds another pinch. She then gives me my order and an extra side of plain fries for my wait. I mean, I appreciate the effort but it's been an hour since I ordered, The Melt has closed around me and I just don't know who wants a cold burger. Regret to say it's not an experience worth repeating and I'm lucky to live to tell about it. We came on a Saturday night and there were a lot of employees but twice as many people all waiting for their food. We waited 20 minutes for our food (2 burgers and garlic fries) and only got it because my husband went to inquire. Our burgers had been sitting out (and therefore was cold). I must've had an unknown death wish when I ordered medium rare- my burger was uncooked and I couldn't finish it. I got sick from eating here! I am baffled how many 4-5 star ratings this place has so far and the mentions of stellar customer service. Just...how??? Why are there 6-8 people working and nobody acknowledging the 2-3 customers waiting? Why does it take 15 minutes past the quoted wait time to make one item? It's ok. Not like the SF location. I guess my expectations were too high. The food is ok; nothing to rave about. Pretty decent options. The location has lots of competition nearby. The down side to this location is that a lot of pigeons and birds early in day; they defecate in the area a lot. The side walk is always loaded with bird poop.
