Staying at a hotel in Canton and decided this might be worth the 15 min drive and it was. Cute southern restaurant with delicious food and drink. Key lime Martini was a great waiting drink. Arrived a little after 7 and 5 of us seated within 30 mins on Friday. Delicious red fish, pork chops. Cheese dip appetizer was great with a little spicy. Friendly, the sesame crusted tuna steak was appropriately seared to correct temperature, the green beans are always a hit. But being a coffee-phile, I was disappointed. It was weak and not fresh. I say a good restaurant is often measured by the quality of its coffee. Ambience is great with beautiful waterfront views, especially at sunset. read more

We enjoy the food here. The atmosphere can get a bit loud but that is easily manageable when you have a friendly staff and good food. I can honestly say I don't mind waiting for a table. Grab yourself a drink from the bar and take a seat in one of their front porch rockers while you take a look at Gods canvas over the lake. Yummy yummy!! Everything about this place is perfect! Wonderful, attentive employees. Every bite of food I've had is amazing but the catfish and smoked salmon are a few of my favorite things! They all seem to really care about your experience. The restaurant is always clean and just a neat little place. My family went on a Saturday night. Food was delicious and service was excellent. The redfish was some of the best that I had ever had.

Easily able to rate this place of gather with a sturdy 5 stars. Overall experience was 10 stars, but the food came in around 3.9 stars. My lawd, this guy really talking bout stardom. N-E ways, saddled up and rode into this saloon with my wife, buddy and his baby mama, and his baby. Immediately asked for the mermaid brew, which they had for $2 - tighttt. Several seconds later I ordered another, and the night commenced. We easily had the best service in the house, easily the best server I, or anyone in our group had had in their lives. Top of the line, can't be it with a stick...as they say. His name was DANA, a lil older feller, but still had a bunch of spunk! Our group of five adults dined at the Mermaid Cafe in Madison, Mississippi this evening. I can firmly state that a very good time was had by all. We started with pimento cheese bites with comeback sauce, and "Mermaid" dip, a cheesy dip with sausage and served with in-house made potato chips. My wife had the shrimp platter and her best friend had the catfish platter. Both were loaded with crispy, hot fries. My mother-in-law had a stuffed catfish with a lovely sauce. The ladies were quite satisfied with their choices. They also had specialty cocktails, which were flavorful and colorful. My son had a rustic-style Quattro formaggio pizza with pepperoni added. The crust was fantastic, and our wait told us they made all the dough in-house. Our wait was great, very efficient and friendly. I had a pair of chicken-fried pork cutlets over smashed potatoes and a lovely gravy. All in all, this was a wonderful dining experience and we'll definitely go there again. read more

We live in the area and have been here twice before about 2 years ago and it was ok but not great. The meal tonite was one the best we've had in a long time. Had the side salads with comeback sauce. It had crisp green (not white) lettuce. Very nice. Entrees were the redfish with quartered potatoes and gulf coast shrimp with shoestring French fries. Both were very tasty and served hot. Even the tarter sauce and cocktail sauces were great. Porter took great care of us. The Mermaid Amber was perfect. Blueberry cheesecake was almost more than we could eat. Can't say enough about the meal and the service. We will be back more often given how fantastic tonite's meal was. read more

I really want to like this place. It is so convenient to my house and has a great atmosphere and decor. And, man I love that swing on the front porch that overlooks Lake Caroline. Unfortunately there are some service and food quality issues that will make it hard to come back here. Service is consistently slow even when they are not busy. Recently we were there on a weeknight and the restaurant was fairly empty. It took over 10 minutes to take our drink order and then she didn't come back to take our dinner order until after our appetizer was served. The worst part about that was that a member of our party wanted the fish special. However she had just sold the last two to the table beside us that arrived well after us. Had our order been taken timely, one of those would have been ours. By hen there was another lag in service after our meals were finished and we were waiting on the check. We were over it at that point and ready to go. The food was disappointing as well. The catfish while the perfect thinness seemed to be very rubbery instead of crispy and the fried shrimp was clearly frozen popcorn shrimp. The sautéed shrimp was very bland and just kind of meh. I will say the steak was delicious and well cooked, really the only entree that was well received at our table. This restaurant could be so much more, but after three attempts, we won't be back again. read more

No More Mermaid Hubby and I moved to Madison - Lake Caroline - from Atlanta in late 2013. Since the Mermaid Cafe was the only restaurant within a 10-mile radius of our home - we (and our visiting adult children) have eaten there on many occasions as a matter of simple convenience, but it's just never good. We are so glad The Gathering at Livingston has opened. It is wonderful. Now we never go to The Mermaid for pre-fab overpriced food. Yay!! read more
