This was a true five star Mexican restaurant experience from start to finish. Everything we ordered was super good, beautifully presented, full of flavor, and clearly made with care. From the appetizers and salsas to the main dishes, every plate felt polished and well thought out. The food strikes the perfect balance between elevated and comforting, and the quality was consistent across the board. The atmosphere is upscale and lively, making it a great spot for a nice dinner or a special night out. You can tell a lot of attention went into the design and overall vibe, and it really delivers on the experience. My only small critiques, and they are very minor, would be that more frequent water refills would have been appreciated and the music could be turned down a bit to make conversation easier. Neither of these took away from how much we enjoyed the meal. Overall, this is easily a five star spot and one of the best high end Mexican dining experiences around. The positives/food: Our server? Rafael, a separate five-star just for you. The food? Delicious--bone marrow tacos, ceviche, and truffle fries. The cauliflower? If you love garlic and truffle so much you want your breath to be a biohazard, go for it. Personally, I'll pass. The negatives: Imagine planning a 30th surprise birthday dinner, paying another table $50 (to a nicer area of the restaurant and gave us their blessing) to swap so we could actually sit together, and then being told no by general manager, Candace, who is also the fun police. She was dismissive, rude, and spent more time glaring at our table than managing. When my friends who made the reservation tried to talk to her, she straight up would not talk to them. Like ma'am... what is your job, exactly? But wait. It gets better. Not only was Candace staring at us with daggers for eyes, she also started recruiting other employees to point at us like we were on the FBI's restaurant watchlist. At that point, I wasn't sure if I was at dinner or a stakeout. Lastly, there's the $25 cake-cutting fee. I, just a guest to dinner, was asked to have them cut the cake. Silly me--I thought they were being accommodating. Turns out, it was for $25? Respect the hustle. Cut it yourself friends lol. Final thoughts? Good food, amazing server, horrific management. For such a nice venue, this was disappointing to bring my friends here for my birthday celebration and receive such terrible service. The service level was very much below par and the lack of hospitality was apparent. 3 of my guests' cocktails had little to no trace of liquor, 1 guest revived the wrong drink 3 repeated times (by the forth said forget it), my finance had to order his drink 3 separate times because each of the tequilas he asked for was "out" and we had to chase down our waiter anytime we needed service. When he approached the table he said "what do you want" as if we were bothering him. The valet will have a line, so arrive early. We didn't see any public parking nearby, so be prepared to valet. Reservation or not they will not seat you until your entire party arrives. The dress code was debatable, we saw plenty of jeans, tennis shoes, bra tops & the girl seated next to us literally had her but cheeks showing her skirt was so short. There was also plenty of skin in the scant clothing the girls around the bar were wearing. HOWEVER! Our waiter, Carlos was outstanding. We were originally seated on the patio but the sun was shining directly in my husbands eyes so he moved us, without us even asking. He kept our waters full, meals coming in hot, but the best part was he was so joyful. He had a smile the entire night, never rushed us, genuinely seemed happy to be there working on this Saturday night. The chips were tasty, the salsas weren't anything special although the presentation was unique. The margarita was tasty, but again nothing special and there was so much ice it was gone quickly. My husband tried The Mexican with blanco and it was really tasty. We originally decided to start with the Cripsy Pork Belly off the Hot Shareables menu and it was SO DELICIOUS we decided to order a few more Hot Shareables as our meal instead of entrees. CRISPY PORK BELLY - the portion size was exactly what it should have been - plenty to share. The fresh tortillas, sauce & sides were so tasty. This was truly a wonderful start. BARBACOA DE ARRACHERA - Again the portion size was excellent, plenty to share. This also came with the yummy fresh tortillas and sides. The meat was so tender and so tasty we could have ordered two of these. CHICHARRÓN DE RIBEYE - our least favorite of the night. It was good, but we didn't realize the meat would be served in a bowl of guacamole. My husband is not a fan of avocado or guacamole so he tried a few bites of the meat, which was good, but finished off the Barbocoa while I dipped fresh tortilla in the guacamole. I was debating between giving a 3 star or a 4 star for the reasons below. 3 stars: ~ When checking in they told us to wait at the bar until our table was ready, but each open bar seat that came available was immediately reserved. One half of the bar was empty with reserved signs on a Saturday night with patrons coming in. This is not acceptable and makes us patrons feel lessor than. Because of this alone I will not return. ~ New server who could not remember anything we ordered, another server had to keep coming to confirm our order. ~ Food was just average. The menu looks terrific but the end result was simply average. 4 Stars: ~ Drinks are great and strong ~ The couple we came with left their credit card and the manager pulled my number and consistently tried to get a hold of me to let me know and arrange pickup, that o appreciated. ~ Bartender, I believe named Ryan was very attentive. ~ Ambiance was great in the large dining room. Definitely want reservations and ours was right on time. Valet Parking services were also very efficient and friendly. After seating, our server Dom visited quickly and off we went. Did a few Margaritas (The Mexican, El Rey, and Mujeres Divinas were our drinks of choice).All three were great! Dom's service was top level all night. He and his team were available when we needed anything. A+ for Dom and Team. A large group of us came here to celebrate our good friend's milestone birthday. We had the large table in the main room. After we all settled into our seats, we ordered a round of drinks. I started off with the El Rey Margarita, which was fantastic. As for the starters, I enjoyed the Octopus, Sashimi, and the Sea Bass Ceviche. For my main entree, I went with the NY Strip and it was cooked to perfection for me. Throughout the night, our waitress was almost hovering over our table, which is a good thing. Waters were constantly being filled. She was as attentive and as quick to react as I have ever seen in a higher caliber restaurant. My review f this restaurant is biased by the fact that we went after a company event as a party of 20. I understand that's difficult to serve properly, however other places were able to provide a better experience. Overall, this restaurant seemed set up to separate wealthy people from their money. The fact that the only parking available was valet, and the *cheapest* car in the valet lot being a G Wagon should have tipped us off. We were given three different menus, at 3 different times, and there was still confusion about which menu was the current/correct menu when it came time to order. We never received a drink menu at our side of the table, though another party member did get a wine list. I have no idea how much they charged for the house margarita I was talked into ordering. The menu available to us was uninspired. I ended up with a filet mignon with asparagus and mashed potatoes. It didn't fit the vibe of a place called "the Mexican" and it was expensive. The sirloin steak was popular, and came with a spicy sauce, but was served cold to most of the table. The dessert was a strawberry shortcake, but the strawberries were still frozen, which is poor show. At least the carajillo was a tasty digestivo. We got the Bistec Enchiladas for the main course. The beef and enchilada by itself was good. The sauce it came with was very tomato heavy and didnt complement the dish, so I tried avoiding that. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate cake and Quatro Leches. The cake was better. Service was good and helpful, although they may need more wait staff there as when the restaurant got busy, our waiter was missing when we needed the check as they were very busy. Spent five days in the Design District of Dallas, at the Hotel Anatole for a conference. Was unimpressed with bar & grill food at the hotel and turned to Yelp for help. Found The Mexican about half a mile away and we decided to walk over on a Saturday night without reservations. We arrived to a flurry of activity, high priced automobiles, valet parking, a doorman and signage about the dress code, ensuring "an elevated atmosphere that reflects the elegance of The Mexican." Guess I should have read the reviews a bit closer. Thankfully, we were both appropriately dressed, but the doorman did ask me to remove my hat, which I did. Upon first impression, The Mexican seemed to be quite a bustle of activity as we arrived about 6pm without reservations. We were asked if we wouldn't mind sitting in the bar and were not opposed to that. The hostess noted we would need to be done eating within 2 hours because the table had 8pm reservation. Again, we had no problems with that request from the staff. We were seated in a bar booths, after we arrived were full, there were assorted seats at the bar open, and some tables in various parts of the restaurant. The longer we sat there, a line began to waiting area, most likely those without reservations looking to get in later that evening. The restaurant seemed to have some larger parties seated in various areas during our visit. We were greeted by our attentive server, who gave us her name and offered suggestions for appetizers, explaining the chips and salsas we were provided. We did ask for some drink suggestions, I decided on a margarita called, "The4 Mexican, with teremana blanco, Jalisco orange and lime. My girlfriend got a cocktail, "Pequena Belleza, tito's vodka, pineapple, damiana, yuzo, and lime." We skipped any appetizers, but maybe we shouldn't, as the queso fundido at the table next to us looked incredible! They had great cold and hot "shareables" prior to the main course, but the salsas presented to us were all excellent. Varying levels of heat from mild to "muy caliente" or maybe my palate wasn't ready for the Mexican heat. After relaxing and sharing drinks and eating chips we ordered dinner. On the recommendation of the server, I ordered the Del Mar Enchilada Trio, "camarones enchilada with salsa ranchera, king crab enchilada with mezcal habanero sauce & langosta enchilada with chiapaneca sauce." My girlfriend ordered Camarones Gobernador, "sauteéd shrimp, bacon, toasted red pepper, Oaxaca cheese, salsa chamuco." Meals arrived in probably less than 10 minutes. Both plates presented very nicely with a combination of sauces over the enchiladas and an intresting roast poblano slurry. It was thicker than a salsa, but the flavor was wonderful on the tacos. We weren't done, but we didn't order another round of drinks. We did opt to see the dessert menu and I lost my girlfriend there. We... she ordered the Cuatro Leches, "elderflower-soaked berries, rompope, and licor 43 cream" and we also ordered The Mexican Chocolate Martini, "hornitos reposado, dorda chocolate liqueur, rumchata, ancho verde, and cinnamon." What an amazing pairing! Not sure what we enjoyed more the martini or the cake. Both were excellent. We left The Mexican full, with leftovers. While a bit pricey, again more than I expected but I didn't review the menu or the Yelp reviews, we did feel this dinner was worth every penny we spent. Would we return? The ambiance and vibe of this place is amazing. It's a perfect place for a date night. This place is beautifully lit on the outside in the parking lot with lights in the trees. We were immediately greeted in the parking lot and the door was held open as we entered. Once inside, we came across a modern upscale vibe with a stunning display of tequilas and other bottles. Started out with some of their margaritas which were crafted really nicely. The two that we got were with mezcal. We were also brought chips and five different salsas. These salsas were all very different and amazing with different flavor profiles. We then ordered the queso fundido along with corn tortillas. Simply put, this was so great! It's is a must. For our meal, we got the chicken fajitas and the steak tacos. The menu will have them listed in a more elegant way, but that is the basis of what we got. My wife said that here fajitas were the best she has ever had and my steak tacos on the blue corn tortillas was out of this world great. I cannot say enough how great this place was. For desert, we ordered the chocolate cake and received what seemed to be like a 7 layer high cake. Presented to us was a cup of warm fudge that was drizzled over the cake and strawberries. Although high-priced, hands down the food hit the mark. Every dish we ordered was exquisite, unique, and tasted phenomenal, from the crispy pork belly to the scallops and camarones. The ambience was on point, exactly what I would have expected...it felt very exclusive and boujee. However, the service had much to be desired. If I'm paying a super premium, I'm expecting service to match, but this was not the case at The Mexican. 1) The server came by so infrequently that my friend ran out of water and finally had to drink my water since no refill came. 2) When my friend ordered a drink, it never came out and had to be reordered. 3) When we asked to split the check three ways, the server said it is not possible...really? 4) The icing on the cake...we were celebrating my friend's birthday and we discretely told the server. No questions asked, we got the dessert with a candle...along with the dessert automatically added to the bill...nice. These service gaps would be fine at a normal restaurant with normal prices but this is not a normal restaurant with normal prices. For the price paid, I expected observant and attentive service actively working to make their guests feel special. As far as food goes, we started with the wagyu ribeye and the ahi Mexicano - both were absolutely delicious . And let's not forget about the chips and salsa they start you off with ( so good ) . For main courses, my fiance got the crab enchiladas with truffle fries on the side and I got the enchiladas Del Mar trio - absolutely delicious. In terms of service, we didn't actually meet our waiter until right before our appetizers were served to us. Other waiters were helping him out in the meantime, but at one point, I literally had to ask a random waiter to find ours. The food was exceptional per usual but our server Andre went above and beyond to make sure my boyfriend's birthday was a special as possible. Okay- they are so accommodating. Our babysitter no showed on us and they immediately were able to accommodate us bringing two kids with us. All the staff was friendly, kind and patient with us. They probably don't get many kids coming in cause it took a while from them to find the high chair in their storage. The kids LOVED the lobster enchiladas and the ahi tuna cold appetizer with mango.
