To start, the queso is amazing and a huge portion. Secondly, the service was below par. Our server would not engage with us and we got appetizers before we even got waters. He kept walking past with a water pitcher but never actually filled them. Having been to sicilian butcher, the service felt like an experience there, and visiting the mexicano felt like I was ordering at a kiosk. I had high hopes for this restaurant, but was disappointed during my visit. We visited around 11:00am and almost no one was there. We hoped for a peaceful lunch. Instead, they seated everyone together on tables that are only a few feet away from each other. We could have been spread out for more privacy. The food is good, but the portions are extremely small. Even the water glasses were extremely small. Service was mediocre, and throughout our meal, we were thirsty most of the time because it was difficult to get our drinks refilled. I have been coming to the Mexicano for the last 6 months or so. The restaurant is clean, sleek and has vibrant Mexican vibes. That's just what you see on the outside. The most important part that stood out to me was the staff. Honorable name mentions: Michael: The man the myth the legend. He is a prime example of what hospitality is all about. Fun, energetic, happy to see you. He will put on a great show and make you feel at home. Kaela: At the bar will remember you by your first name, is very sweet and accommodating and knows how to make you feel warm. She treats people like a person and not a statistic. Trina, Alisha,Cat- I didn't have the pleasure in getting to know you all to well but when I went in you always greeted me with a smile and said "welcome back" They also run a taco Tuesday special. We are so glad we stopped to eat here. The decor was so inviting, lots of parking and when we walked in we were greeted warmly. The decor is one of the best of any Mexican Restaurants we've been in. Beautifully designed, great colors, open, good atmosphere - feels very "with it" yet not intimidating. Our Server was Trina and she was the very best. When going back we will ask to sit in her area if she's working. She's that good!!! The food was outstanding. Nice portion size. Refills on chips and additional warm tortillas came quickly and the menu is so appealing we wish we had been able to order at least 2 or 3 entrees. We stopped with appetizers: The best Queso Fundido we have had for years with warm fresh hand-made flour tortillas; and the Guacamole freshly made and very generous portions. We also loved the freshness of the chips and salsa and probably ate too many between ordering and food coming. The Happy Hour Margaritas are delicious and the prices unbeatable. Not worth going back to. While the ambiance looks great, the food for value leaves you wanting. We started with Melina's street corn and should have left there. Overpriced wouldn't even cover it. $12 for one corn cob and the saddest part, less than 25% was seasoned. The shrimp in the shrimp tacos were not grilled, the sides cost extra, the complementary salsa did not have good flavor. Overall a very sad experience. The pros were that the meats in the carne asada and the wagyu had great flavor, but the portions are too small to command such high prices. The Flan was also surprisingly good but I would have preferred to take my father in law elsewhere for his birthday. If you're considering coming here like we did, don't. My order came out wrong, and we couldn't find our waiter to let her know we even ended up checking out with another server. Fast forward to when they returned to their original location, and it was more of the same. The food was burnt, and once again, the order was wrong. We had to ask the hostess to find our waiter to pay. It's really disappointing to see a place I loved lose its touch. I think people are excited about the place because the vibe is so great and it's a good place to get very tipsy and at that point of course everything is great even mediocre Mexican food makes me wonder how this list God created seems like it's some kind of yelp algorithm thing or maybe some other process hard to make sense of it. We celebrated my girlfriend's birthday on a busy Saturday night. we got sat 15 minutes past our reservation but it was not a big deal. a floor manager approached us with a complementary shot and apologized for the delay. I only deducted a star because the hostess would not let my husband and I sit at a full booth, there were four empty booths that can sit up to six people if needed and they were unoccupied for the time I was there. These days, it's hard to find even a half-decent happy hour. The Mexicano brings it! Happy hour EVERY DAY from 11am-5:30pm with drinks and food! We came on Taco Tuesday and got an even more screamin' deal: $2 carnitas and chicken tinga tacos. Had to get the quesobirria taco ($3) too and round it off with the chicken tinga enchiladas ($10). All fantastic. We couldn't get enough of the complimentary crispy tortilla chips and smoky salsa too. My bf was served the biggest margarita ($5) and when I inquired if the sangria ($5 too!) was red or white, our bartender said, "red but I'll customize it for you! I really liked this spot when I first went but after going back a couple of times my food quality declined. The service is still amazing and I am very impressed by that, as it is not always easy to find good service. This last time I went, however, the chips were a bit stale. Additionally, I am a pescatarian who leans toward vegetarian -- The Mexicano does not have many veggie selections, just enchiladas and nachos -- not even a veggie burrito or veggie tacos (like mushroom or potato). I know many Mexican restaurants don't cater to vegetarians but a couple of menu selections would be nice! Also I tried the elote guacamole since I had read so many good thing about it but it was average -- needed more spice or cilantro or something! Basically the elote was on top of the guac -- not what I expected I guess. We did order the churro desert and that was really good and the presentation was so cute. I only wish there were a couple more churros (we shared between a party of 3) -- it only comes with 5 churros and some delicious dipping sauces (chocolate, caramel and tres leches). read more

We just love The Mexicano! The food, ambience, and service are all fabulous. They also have an amazing daily (even weekends) happy hour in the bar area. We always want to order new dishes, but mostly we return to our favorites: birria enchiladas for my partner and mix-and-match tacos for me (usually the birria, the fried beef quesadilla, and the cochinita pibil). The birria is a must-order in some form or another. A table next to us got the birria ramen, and it looked incredible. Love the guacamole with pomegranate seeds. LOVE the smoky salsa that comes with the chips. Love the margaritas and sangria. We always have great service, from the host stand to our server. Today we had Kasey, and she was incredible! So kind, sweet, and helpful. Just a ray of sunshine. She made our meal even better. Next time we will have to try the nachos and churros she recommended! read more

What an interesting place! The chips weren't the best but the salsa is PERFECTION!! I was surprised that sitting outside was not uncomfortable, thanks to the ceiling fans and misting systems. The margaritas are good size... we got the chupacabra and the mango flavor. Be warned: they are spicy! The mango one was definitely spicier than I liked so I wouldn't order it again. I'm sure the non-spicy flavors would be perfect and they do not cheap-out on the alcohol which was nice. I got 2 tacos, both pork and both delicious!!! I also had the rice and beans which were ok. The fire dancer was super interesting and a nice touch for sure!!! Very unique!! They do have to turn off the fans and misters during the performance but it's fairly short so you don't have me up getting TOO hot. I took one star off for service. The place was busy and they were doing their best, but it was very slow to get menus, slow to give the order, and when there was an error in my order it took so long to see our waiter again that I didn't even bother to try to get it corrected. Seems like they needed to add another person or two for a busy Saturday evening. Also, NOTE: You are not allowed to bring water bottles into the restaurant. They do offer to keep it for you at the front, but I was afraid I'd forget and leave it there so the alternative was to leave it in my hot car. I'm not a fan of this policy, especially because I drink water that has fluoride filtered out, and I doubt that theirs is fluoride-free. read more

Great atmosphere and an excellent happy hour! The drinks were awesome, and Alma was such a great serve she took amazing care of us. The tacos are fantastic, and the Ensalada Fresca was fresh and delicious. The chicken Caesar had a nice kick to it, which we loved. For this year's Spring Arizona Restaurant Week, I picked The Mexicano as my restaurant to dine at. I have been wanting to come by here since they opened up a couple years ago. I have been a frequent guest of the Maggiore Group's other establishments like Sicilian Butcher and Hash Kitchen for many years. I came here for happy hour drinks before jumping into their restaurant week menu and had a really nice time. The place was hopping with music from the DJ booth and tequila from the lady going around offering shots off her cart. I have sampled some tacos from The Mexicano in the past from an event that I was at. They gave me a piñata which is currently one of my kitchen decorations. The Mexicano is known for their popular build-your-own margarita bar. The service was wonderful and my server gave me some suggestions on what items to try. The menu at The Mexicano is traditional Mexican fare with a twist. I'm a big chips and salsa guy and love Mexican restaurants that give you free chips and salsa to start off with. They have a number of discounted items on the happy hour menu. So I grabbed a couple tacos. I took my time soaking in the vibrant happy hour atmosphere with a margarita while munching on my chips and tacos. The AZ Restaurant Week menu is a four course dinner that gave you a choice of some of their classic items off their regular dinner menu. The Mexicano has a popular Guacamole and Salsa Ferris Wheel appetizer that wasn't on the menu. So I started off with their Shrimp Cocktail. Our scorching Arizona summer is upon us, so I was thinking anything cool and refreshing to eat. Both the Shrimp Cocktail and Ensalada Fresca were the perfect starters. I was leaning towards the Fajitas, but got the The Best F#%*ing Birria Enchiladas just because it is one of their signature items and it was my first visit here. The best is debatable, but I did find it very flavorful and enjoyable. I love flan and sadly was too stuffed to truly enjoy my flan dessert. It was definitely a highlight for me. Overall my experience was excellent. I am from the East Valley and that is what took me so long to stop in. I am happy to hear a new location is opening up in Chandler soon. This was our first time here, we were spending a few days in town. The first thing I noticed when we walked in was how beautiful everything was and how good it smelled, clean and fresh with heavenly cooking smells. Once we were seated, the wait staff was fantastic, answering any questions about their very extensive menu... so many choices and they all looked amazing. When our appetizers, drinks and entrées arrived everything was remarkable. The portions are very generous, the quality and taste weee fantastic and the variety of choices made sure everyone had something special to eat and share.
