40 Love deserves way more attention than it gets. I'll be honest I expected it to be one of those places that's all vibe and no substance. The space is gorgeous, the branding is polished... and sometimes that combination can mean the food is an afterthought. Not here. The Grilled Caesar was one of those dishes that sounds simple on paper but ends up being one of the most memorable things you eat all night. Flavorful, and unexpectedly delicious. The Seasonal Crudo was another standoutfresh, citrusy, light, and beautifully presented. Exactly the kind of dish you want to start a meal with in Arizona. We also ordered the Jumbo Shrimp. The shrimp themselves were excellent, but the sauce was the only thing that missed the mark for me. I was expecting something with a stronger wasabi kick, but it leaned much more toward soy sauce. Originally, we wanted to order the caviar sticks, only to find out they've been replaced with the Caviar Chicken Nugget. I was skeptical for about five seconds. It was SO good and ended up being one of my favorite bites of the night. The Chef's Corn Bread is a must-order. The Broccolini was the only dish I probably wouldn't get again the sauce underneath just wasn't for me. For the main event, we shared the Snake River Farms American Wagyu Ribeye, and wow. Incredible quality, perfectly cooked, and everything you want when you're splurging on a great steak. The cocktails were just as impressive. The Chemistry Set had a fun presentation but backed it up with flavor an excellent Old Fashioned that's spirit-forward slightly sweet without being harsh. The Watermelon Cucumber Cooler was refreshing, crisp, and dangerously easy to drink. And the space itself? feels both upscale and fun at the same time. I walked in expecting a beautiful restaurant with average food. I left planning what I'd order on my next visit. That's about the highest compliment I can give a restaurant. read more

When I got here, I actually wanted to sit at a table but they were so pushy with me and insisted that I sit at the bar so that's what I ended up doing. I wanted a little more peace and quiet so I sat at the bar outside. I ordered a wagyu filet mignon and a New York cheesecake. The wagyu filet mignon cost $80 but I only felt it was slightly better than a normal filet mignon and thus would say that the price is not worth it. The New York cheesecake was heavy and became a chore to eat once I finished 75% of it. The service was a little inattentive too. My wife and I came for a date night which was perfect for us and got a mix of steak, pasta, and appetizers which were all delicious. Many other restaurants appear to be the same in Scottsdale, but not 40 Love which stands out among a competitive list of date night restaurants to choose from. My only small critique is that the place is a bit smaller on the inside (patio is huge though), so I highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time because the bar seating is also reservations only which is different than other places. If you want a restaurant with a creative menu and an intimate yet fun atmosphere, then I highly recommend this place! read more

We went here on Friday night and overall had a really enjoyable experience. This is a newer restaurant, and you can tell they're still finding their rhythm--but the food was tasty, the drinks were delicious, and the space itself is absolutely beautiful. We did have an 8:15 reservation and weren't seated until about 8:35. I chose "standard seating," so that may have played a role, but we were seated in a smaller room away from the main dining area, which felt a bit removed from the atmosphere of the rest of the restaurant. Our server--Brendon (or a similar name)--was wonderful. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful throughout the night. We started with the caramelized meatballs, which were very good and full of flavor. That said, I didn't really get the caramelization described on the menu; they felt more like baked meatballs in sauce. Still tasty, just not quite what I expected based on the description. For our main dish, we shared the Snake River American Wagyu farm ribeye with two sides. The flavor of the steak was excellent, but it was much thinner than I expected for a ribeye cut. The preserved wild mushrooms were good--I loved the variety of textures and mushroom sizes--but I felt they could have used just a bit more seasoning. The red bliss potato mash, however, was delicious and something I would absolutely order again. I have been wanting to try this place since it opened and finally had the opportunity. It was easy to make a reservation and I love the location. The hostess greeted me promptly as well as the gentleman on the outside (he was very nice). I was seated pretty quickly (I was on time). It was two of us and mt friend was outside on a call but the original table I was seated at felt like a kids table lol so it was nice that the waitress noticed without me saying anything and moved me to a nice booth. The space is beautiful, the music was IT! I pretty much knew all the songs being played. Our server Christina was really nice and provided great recommendations. I like the simple menu and I ordered the seabass and the wedge salad (chopped). The salad was soooooo good lol I would go back just for the salad and the sea bass had a nice flavor. The bartenders saw us walk in and just kept eating? They took their sweet time to even acknowledge us and it took the other bar guests to say something to get the bartender to come over. He was very monotone and didn't really make us feel welcome. It was a rough first experience given that I have wanted to try this place for a while and for some reason it is always empty when we walk by and now I think the staff is the reason why. There was another couple that walked in about twenty minutes after us and the bartender gave them quite a different experience, greeted them with enthusiasm and was laughing and making jokes and that disappeared when he spoke to us until the end of our drink. They were an hour away from closing but that shouldn't be a factor into how they treat their guests. Not sure if we will be back. read more

An absolutely offensive experience and will never be back. There is a lot to unpack here with this one and hopefully this serves for positive growth, because if experiences like ours are duplicated on a consistent basis they will not stay open. We arrived for our 730 reservation, a family dinner for 7 on a Thursday evening. Things started pretty strong, the waiter seemed to know the menu and spent several minutes talking thru it, but it quickly turned a situation of over promise and way under deliver. We mentioned off the bat we were interested in the Sole, keep in mind, $105 for the dish and way over priced and probably the most expensive in the area. It was said on the menu to be enough for two and deboned table side. We asked to hold one for the entrees, and were told " we have plenty and so much" to go around. The waiter expressed ordering appetizers and entrees at once to ensure things came out coursed properly, so we did. We all ordered and since we had a big group, two orders of Sole were ordered as entrees, to be split by 4 in our group. Appetizers came pretty promptly, the bar service was notably slow. At this point the restaurant was very quiet, probably only a few other tables, and we were the only table in our section, seated in a booth right in the back by the kitchen. The servers at this point began to lag, stood around to chat and took a long time to check in. Once appetizers concluded, about 30-40 mins passed and when our entrees should have been hitting the table, the waiter came to say they were unable to prepare two orders of Sole and only had one left. This should have been caught way prior. Another 30 minutes passed for entrees to finally arrive, and the Sole was not a fully pound as the waiter stated, was definitely not even 12 ounces nor enough to share, and was not deboned table side. The crispy brussels' were not hot, and overall the rest of our party thought the food was just fine, nothing to stand out. We had a couple steaks, pasta, pork chops, sides, salads and things ordered, but not one bit was really special. What was the most insulting in my opinion, was after we got roped into a comped dessert no one really wanted (we had been there for so long a this point), I am sure in an effort by our waiter to make up for things prior, but that again took forever, and the restaurant staff, especially the kitchen, made a point to be aloof, obnoxious and lack any general sense of basic hospitality or etiquette. The kitchen staff was blasting very inappropriate music, the restaurant music was also completely shut off for most of the evening. We at times had to talk over the kitchen staff because they were so loud and just locker room talking from the back at a volume of zero situational awareness it disturbed us at our table. Wait for the last table to leave at the very least... Not one staff member, nor manager, came to touch our table and sincerely apologize for our experience and how poorly things went clearly mostly at the hands of the kitchen staff, who all made a point to put their middle fingers up. (What a joke honestly, this place will get eaten alive in Scottsdale with very amateur behavior). One woman who did come to touch our table, and if she was the manager, woof, because she lacked any presence nor asserted any real dialogue about the experience we were having. My fiancee is an industry professional, we do love to try new places and support new business. We can recognize what are growing pains and what is simply just a bad attitude, and this was a bad attitude and a terribly appalling experience. I would say many here just lack experience but it was just lacking common sense. We do not leave negative reviews unless things really go south, and unfortunately tonight, it was a disaster of a service. 730pm reservation and we left at 1030pm, completely unacceptable when the restaurant is empty (not surprising). We did appreciate the waiter making a small effort and he did comp one entree in addition to offering the dessert to try to make up for the mishandling of the Sole availability promised when we ordered, but in hindsight, the one that was brought to the table should never have been cleared for service, it wasn't even close to being as advertised on their menu and doesn't stand up to Nobu or anywhere in the area with Sole, and the dessert coming out cold shouldn't have taken 30+ minutes to hit the table. Between the general over promised and under delivered experience during ordering our meals and the send off atmosphere created by staff (especially the kitchen) our experience was just shamefully bad. Bad enough for all of us to not come back. Decent food doesn't justify terrible etiquette and a 3 hour turn around in a near empty restaurant. read more

First time visiting and since it is relatively new, I was curious whether the food and service would truly live up to the buzz. I'm happy to say it absolutely did. Starting with the service, our server Alexandra was outstanding. Warm, attentive, and genuinely knowledgeable, she took her time walking us through the menu and offered thoughtful recommendations without ever feeling scripted. She even curated a cocktail specifically to my palate. Huge thanks to her and the bartenders for an incredibly refreshing pineapple mezcal margarita variation that was perfectly balanced. The atmosphere deserves just as much credit. The playlist was spot on, and the design of the space, especially the patio, felt intentional and beautifully curated. The service was perfect for our party as we were never rushed but always attended too. The atmosphere was fantastic. I'm 71 years old and of all the pinot grigio's I have ordered in my lifetime, no bar staff has EVER "finished off a bottle" and handed me an almost over flowing glass. I lost my full glass of pinot virginity at 40 Love, and while I know I'm unlikely to have this experience again here, I WILL be coming back for some of that pull apart brioche. Quite honestly, the only high-point I can give this place is the professionalism of our server Natasha. And we were 1 of only 3 other tables at that time. As we were reviewing the menu, the lights in the room suddenly dimmed to near nothing, obviously not favorable to reading a menu. I asked Natasha about turning the lighting back up so we could read; she said she would see what she could do. A few minutes later, the manager appeared and said the lights get dimmed for ambiance at that time which is "what the owner requires", and the best he could do was to bring our table a few more tea candles for lighting. So, I guess the customer's wishes don't come into play here, as the owner, who isn't present says so. So under cell phone lighting we order. NOW, comes the food. The scallops ($48) were over-cooked; the 2 pieces of Chilean sea bass ($65 ea) were each almost about the size of a baseball card; & the asparagus ($14) was undercooked & hard; the hard stalk end never being cut off. The wife's filet ($65) was good, as was my side of brussel sprouts. A cocktail & dessert were par, but our server very cordial. So, in the grand scheme of things, $341 to the house was quite an expediture for a very disappointing dining adventure. New or not, management at this place needs to enroll in an overall basics class in restauranting, as they are in no way in a position to compete with the other actual high-end dining venues in the area we patronized during our 5-day stay. It's nice to see another restaurant in the old Kelly's at Southbridge location. The overall ambience of this restaurant is nice and a good upgrade from Kelly's. Cocktails were good and food was a mixed bag of very good (filet and red Potatoes side) and disappointing (scallops with gnocchi). The scallops portion size was appetizer level, literally only five gnocchi and three medium size scallops (disappointing for $47). I recommend skipping that dish. I may try this place again, but will definitely get a different dish this time and ask about size of portions. read more
