We made last-minute plans to spend Christmas in the city and used Yelp and various review sites to select a reasonably priced hotel convenient to Radio City to attend the Christmas Spectacular (separate review five stars). The staff was very friendly and helpful on the phone in advance with information on parking and room choices. Edwin and the doorman were great helping with our bag. Angel checked us in and got us an early check-in with an interior junior suite upgrade. The room was clean, cozy, nicely furnished, very quiet and very comfortable. The king bed was very comfortable with quality linens, great mattress and large down pillows. Parking was discounted and convenient at 140 W 51st street ( no valet at hotel, but not a problem). Nice little lounge in the lobby. We had a great stay and would definitely consider returning in the future. Not a five star hotel, but for value, location, quality and helpful friendly staff, we had a five star experience. read more

My wife and I stayed here this past weekend. The location of this hotel was perfect, the staff were very accommodating and nice, the atmosphere had sort of an Italian Renaissance vibe with marble floors, paintings and couches and chairs to lounge on. The lobby was a little bit dated, a little bit musty, and could've used a slight renovation, but otherwise wasn't too bad. Our hotel room itself was very clean, the bed was quite comfortable, the shower had amazing water pressure, and the room contained beautiful lighting. We absolutely did not have any kind of view from our window which was a brick wall. It would've been nice to wake up in the morning and look out into the street, otherwise, we were able to sleep well that night. When we visit New York City again, we will consider staying at The Michelangelo hotel. read more

My family decided to enjoy the lobby bar lounge last night following my cousin's wedding. We were insulted repeatedly and pretty much verbally abused the entire time of our stay by Gerard--the waiter/bartender on duty (who made sure to tell us that he was union and couldn't be affected by our registering s complaint about him). He was upset that our party of 18 would cause him 'extra hassle and dishes'. He literally said that. He never checked on us and barely refused to refill our drinks or waters (that we were paying handsomely for). My family booked dozens of rooms at the hotel for the wedding. We spent a solid amount on two rounds of drinks last night. All to be very crassly harassed by Gerard. read more

This was our first visit to the USA. We stayed here for 4 nights 16th-20th May as part of my wife's birthday celebration. A luxurious, elegant & classical Italian style hotel with superbly comfortable beds and beautiful rooms. The lobby is stunning and a great place just to chill out. The photos on their site really don't do it justice! All the staff from reception, housekeeping and porters were very friendly and helpful. The room we were in was incredibly spacious, and after a day of sightseeing, a long soak in the large bathtub was just perfect! The beds are so comfy, we were out like a light as soon as our heads touched the pillow (and usually it takes me a while to doze off, so this was a nice little bonus for me!) Housekeeping were brilliant and the room was spotless. It's around a 5-minute walk to Time Square and the same to Top of The Rock so quite central to midtown attractions and near to a few subway stations. Despite its location, you won't hear any of the hustle & bustle of the city so you'll get a great night's sleep! 100% recommend this hotel and we'll definitely book when we next visit NYC. Clean rooms, (although our interior window was not able to be closed tightly), invisible but efficient housekeeping, (meaning, it is on the level of being the best), beautiful lobby. Rooms have stains on the carpets and stains on the furniture. Breakfast package includes a breakfast at a not-so-equipped lounge/restaurant. Staff is very hard-working but the crowd is overwhelming and the menu is ambitious with very expensive menu items. Kind of outdated rooms and hallways, stains on the furniture in extremely nice rooms, paint chipping, dust on the shelves in the bathrooms, but still, nice clean rooms and good concierge and valet and lounge overall. Being in the center of Rockefeller Center and Broadway and lots of tourist attractions, even though I used to live there for many. many years, was very nice. I really liked the people that work there. All of the floor staff, desk staff are extremely helpful, except for the Concierge that asked me to go back to my room to get my ID for tickets that I had ordered back in July. Not Cool. Who did she think I was, coming there with my room key, coming down the elevator, paying many dollars to stay there? She was not cool. She seemed angry, and I felt she didn't like me or her guests. read more

Staying at the Michelangelo was a definite win for my wife and I. Let me tell you about our experience.... The hotel itself is beautiful. The majestic face of the building is enhanced by the wonderful, luxurious interior. The staff was on point the whole time. Our bags were taken care of before we even got out of the taxi. When we were shown up to our room, we made our way through the winding hall to our quarters with a nice view of 51st. Our room was spacious with everything that you would need provided. The king sized bed was comfortable. There was a nice sized television that had a plethora of channels including Showtime and HBO. If you want, there is a fully stocked fridge with snacks for a extra fee. Everything was phenomenal, check my pics for more detail of our room. If you're stay in the city includes musicals or a venture down to Times Square, this is the perfect location. You are a short walk reach to a lot of locations...Rockefeller Plaza, the Theater District, a lot of restaurants in Hell's Kitchen, etc. In addition to these highlights, you are also within walking distance to multiple subway lines that can get you anywhere throughout the area. It was my wife's birthday week and the trip to NYC to see a Broadway show was her gift. About a week before the trip, I contacted the hotel to set up a nice fruit and wine set up to be waiting for us when we arrived. There was some type of misunderstanding, and to make a long story short, the surprise wasn't there when I arrived. I called and told them not to worry about it. They were very apologetic, and in a couple of nights, sent up a fruit and wine setting anyway...on the house! There will always be an occasional mistake in whatever business you have, that's a given. The way that you deal with the mistake and correct them is what people will remember. The whole staff was so accommodating and helpful. I highly recommend this hotel for anyone visiting. This hotel totally exceeded my already high expectations. I can't say enough about the entire staff, from the doors, to the desk, to the room services...remarkable! read more

The Michelangelo is my favorite place to stay in midtown. Location is great- close to Time Square, but away from the craziness, walkable to the Park and shopping. Parking is convenient and well-priced. The rooms are HUGE by NYC hotel standards! From standard rooms to suites, I've never had a bad room. Ample work space, fast wifi, lush bathrooms (the huge soaking tub is major sellng point for me), great amenities, and comfortable beds. This hotel is SAFE. Housekeeping is wonderful. My most recent stay (8/30 to 9/2, room 729) brought me the absolute sweetest room attendant. The Front Desk staff is always knowledgable and helpful. The Bell Staff is like none other! Everyone greets you each time you arrive, they hold doors, carry bags, turn on lights when you check in, show you how to operate the thermotat, etc, and are overall old-school hotel staffers. They are so wonderfully friendly and helpful, I wish I knew every single one of their names to applaud them all. Edwin helped me quite a bit this trip. Note: When I checked in for my most recent stay I was informed of a daily beverage credit at the lobby bar. I wasn't able to take advantage of this; the bar was never open when I was on site. Everything is clean, spacious, and well kept. My partner and I had no problems with this location, and we even had a good time at the gym once we got used to its machines (a cable thing?). My only qualms with this location is that they put this sticky tag on your luggage that does not rip away easily! My bag is still sticky from residue and I think I'll have to find some other type of cleanser to get it off. I'm also not a fan of their soaps--it doesn't smell too great too me (almost an old lady smell) and we were lucky to have spare toiletries on us to use instead. Nice hotel! Clean and quiet! The room was spacious by NYC standards. It's close to Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and subways.

The service is exceptionally bad - unless you are caucasian. My husband and I waited for 35 minutes without being served while every other table - including those who came after us were presented a menu, serviced and consistently checked on. The only difference between us and the rest was race. When my husband went up to the bar to order, the bartender replied he would be served shortly, continued to serve another patron and then went off to the back room. My husband asked the other bartender to help after being ignored for 10 minutes while standing at a bar with only three other patrons who were served and chatting with the bartender. Finally, we asked to speak to the manager at the reception desk of the hotel. She served us on the house, but we were not even checked on once after that by the bartender, had to go up to the bar to order another round and then were avoided by the bartender when we tried to pay. We approached the manager who agreed this was unacceptable behavior on their part and comped the drinks. We also overheard the bartender apologizing to another table because of the noise coming from a large party of predominantly non-white guests in the hall above the bar. Since my husband and I both work at banks in the area, we will make sure our colleagues and events planning teams are aware of the racism and poor service so as to never have a similar experience. read more

I've stayed at the Michelangelo a few times before and I was looking forward to another stay. It's close to Times Square, 5th Avenue and Central Park, the rooms are a good size (if a bit dated and in need of a freshening up), and the downstairs seating area is lovely. The service this time around was horrendous. My partner brought me flowers so I asked the front desk if they had a vase. They said they would check. After an hour I called back downstairs and they said they would check again. Finally my partner went downstairs and was told by the manager that they aren't a florist. Pretty rude considering that it's not unusual for hotels to host events with flowers. Another time we asked for a microwave. Again it didn't come so we asked again. Upon returning to the room we found not one but two microwaves. A bit passive aggressive in my view. I spoke to the manager about our experience. He said he'd look into it and get back to me. Suffice it to say I am still waiting. The only positives were the morning desk staff and the amazing doormen who were friendly, attentive and understood the value of customer service. I will be looking for another place to stay the next time I'm in NYC. read more

NYC is known for their tiny tiny rooms, but this hotel's rooms are HUGE!! Even their smallest room is over 400SF. We stayed at The Michaelangelo on our very first visit to NYC. It was difficult for us to choose a hotel being that we have never visited NY before. We read several reviews and finally settled on the Michealangelo. A decision we would not regret. This was a fantastic hotel. It's a little boutique style hotel on 51st St and 7th Ave...right in the center of it all. We were literally blocks from everything! It's decorated with Italian style decor (a little gaudy for my taste) but I think it gives the hotel its charm and definitely not a deal breaker. The door men were all super sweet and extremely helpful! They gave us great tips on riding the subway and shortcuts to walk through the city. They helped roll our luggage through the lobby to the front desk and even had it delivered directly to our room. The front desk staff while not super upbeat were most certainly nice and very informative. The rooms were fantastic! The A/C was super cold (which is exactly how we like it when we sleep) They were clean and smelled great. The beds were very comfortable and you can tell the linens were freshly laundered. There were four large pillows on the bed. We stayed for 6 nights and having a clean, comfortable bed made all the difference in the world. The bathrooms were also very clean. There was a huge tub with a large shower head. They provided large bath towels, toiletries, a blow dryer, iron and very plush, comfy robes. There were plenty of drawers to place our clothes in and a nice sized closet to hang our nicer clothes and place our shoes. There was a separate vanity area with a chair right outside the bathroom with mirrors all around (great for doing your hair and makeup)! There was a large flat screen TV with Showtime & HBO. The room had a great view of the city which was wonderful to wake up to every morning. I thought being so close to the city streets would mean our room would be noisy but that was not the case at all. It was very quiet and allowed us to sleep in a few days. The only thing I would suggest is to equip each room with a mini fridge. We couldn't keep our water bottles cold and there were several nights that we came back to the room with leftover food and had nowhere to store it. They also stated on their website that they provided free breakfast from 7-9 during the week and 8-10 on the weekends. While they did provide breakfast items I feel it was a little lacking in what they offered given the caliber of hotel it was. They had bagels, Danishes, cereal, coffee and tea. I think they can definitely improve in this area and have a bit more selection for the hotel guests. Overall, staying at the Michaelangelo was a wonderful experience and would absolutely stay there when I visit NY again and would recommend first timers to stay here as well. read more

After a few days of sleeping on a friend's pull-out couch (yay for free lodging!), the enormous, cushiony bed at The Michaelangelo was a welcome change of pace. Fluffy pillows, lovely linens, comfy robes--and a spacious room! My last hotel experience was at the Allegro in Chicago--shoe-box sized rooms and minuscule bathrooms. I assumed the same would be true for a hotel in NYC, but was pleasantly surprised by the well-appointed room and the large bathroom, complete with deep soaking tub, citrus-olive oil soaps and lotions, telephone and television ('cause everybody loves chatting & watching the Olympics while they're in the loo). Turn-down service and nightly Italian chocolates are nice pampering touches. The hotel itself is conveniently located in the Theatre District and is just a quick jaunt from Rockefeller Center and Times Square. That could be a pro or a con, depending on your personal preferences--I generally prefer to stay away from the craziness of Times Square, but for this family vacation, the folks wanted to be near Broadway, so there you have it. The hotel lobby is elegantly appointed with its dazzling chandelier, enormous floral arrangements and nightly jazz duets. The croissants and Italian coffee make a delicious continental breakfast and the lobby bar staff is friendly and attentive. In fact, all the staff members I encountered at The Michaelangelo were friendly and attentive. Since this was a family vacation and my in-laws generously paid our way, I can't speak directly to the price of lodging, but I'll say this--it sure ain't a Motel 6. If you can afford a little luxury or pass the bill on to someone else, by all means, enjoy the comfort of this lovely hotel. I'll most likely be on that pull-out couch again the next time I'm in town, but I certainly enjoyed my stay at The Michaelangelo. read more

If I could leave negative stars I would. From the moment we walked in the door we felt unwelcome at this supposedly 5 star hotel. As someone who has traveled internationally and domestically my whole life and stayed in 5 star hotels this was by far my worst experience!!! The manager Jun should be ashamed! I let her staff know that our AC wasn't working. They had to replace the entire AC unit in our room. The room never did get cool. My type 1 diabetic husband woke in the middle of the night pouring in sweat. His side of the bed was soaked, he had to put the robe down so he could go back to sleep. The fridge never got cold enough to get the 2 free bottles of water they gave us cold. When I took them out of the fridge the next morning they were still room temperature. We had to keep the insulin in our cooler we carrying because the fridge wouldn't couldn't keep it cold enough. You call this a 5 star hotel? When I asked for a refund, I was offered $51 and some change! That's their resort fees, which no one mentioned being charged. No, I will not pay your resort fees or the for the room. I will be disputing the charges if a full refund is not given. What a shame to treat people this way. Not all people that can afford to stay in a 5 star hotel dress to the nine and all. If that's you, like us, be prepared to be treated and looked at differently. It's not because you're in NYC either. No one else treated us this way. I hope that you learn something from this review. If nothing else, stop judging a book by it's cover. Not all diamonds shine the same way, but they are still diamonds none the less and you are not better than others even if you think you are in your head! read more

I really don't love this place. I mean it's fine. It's in the center of midtown, near the theaters. But it is old and even the updates show their age. The rugs are gross, the caulking is peeling, and there are so few outlets for charging. But to be honest, the thing that makes me nuts is the scam with the coffee in the morning. There are no coffee makers in the rooms; ok fine. They have little notes everywhere that coffee will be available in the lounge in the morning; ok fine. But Number 1: not until after 7am. And Number 2: they charge $4 for some crap in a carafe that they pour into a small cup. What quality luxury hotel doesn't offer coffee as an included amenity? Honestly, I can't think of a single hotel in this area that doesn't offer coffee in the morning. The whole place just feels cheap. read more

We stayed here on a weeknight while visiting family. The hotel is conveniently located in the heart of broadway, Times Square, Rockefeller center and more! First impression was the friendly doorman Caesar! Upon walking in we were impressed with the artsy Italian decor. The lobby fragrance was a little much but I got use to it. Our room wasn't ready at check in so we sat at the lobby bar for a drink. The lounge was comfy and the drink selection was nice. Once our room was ready we were told we had a $10 beverage credit (not sure if it was for the wait or all guests get it- but either way a nice touch!) We checked out the room. Very clean, comfy, spacious and bright. Again artsy Italian - but you'd have to expect that by now :) All the staff we meet were very nice. My wife and I stayed here for a few nights last year while in town for a wedding and a work event. It was in the middle of our two destinations, and the price was not too exorbitant. Things quickly took a turn for the bizarre though. There was an empty baggie and a splatter of cocaine residue on the desk in our room upon arrival. Apparently either housekeeping is not very thorough, or likes to party on the job. We had gone right out and did not notice until the next morning which made it all the creepier to discover the mess next to one of our bags. The desk clerk and manager did not resolve the issue to our satisfaction, and did not offer a new room or any form of discount. Later that day, although the baggie was removed after my complaint, it was clear that the table had not even been wiped down, and the bulk of the mess was still there. Needless to say after this experience we will not be returning to The Michelangelo. read more

I took my family to New York over the Christmas holidays and we stayed at the Michaelangelo Hotel. From the moment we checked in our positive experience began. The front desk worked to get us all in to our rooms earlier than the check in time. The suites were perfect for our group of six people with two people to each room and the availability of a roll in bed. The staff go over and beyond including the doorman. I travel to NY on a regular basis and usually stay at the Hilton and avoid boutique hotels. But this hotel outperforms the Hilton and the rooms are so much better. Perhaps because the hotel is owned by a woman who runs the Starhotels group of boutique hotels here and in Europe. No complaints which is a first for me, especially when it comes to the room. read more

I've been here twice: once with my family on vacation and once on business. Great place -- great service. The first time they hooked my family of five up with a great suite. Our stay in NYC was great. Great room. Nice people. I stayed there on business about a year later -- that stay was also great. The hotel gets a 4.5. But one thing about this place really stood out. The last time I visited on business, I left by a cab that was hailed for me by one of the bellman: Henry. The cab took me to Penn Station. I got out of the cab in a hurry and forgot my MacBook laptop. I did not realize this until I was almost ready to board the train. Obviously, it is a catastrophe to leave something valuable in an NYC cab. I made a lot of calls, none of which seemed likely to yield results. I had consigned myself to the fact that the laptop was lost forever. Then I called the Michaelangelo to see if the cab driver had returned the laptop. I got Henry the bellman. Henry explained that the cab driver had not yet returned, but that he had been working in NYC for 25 years, and he would try to help me out. Miracle of miracles, Henry called me about an hour later and told me that he had been able to locate the cab driver. The hotel -- working through Henry -- had located the cab and told the cab driver that it would pay for his fare to come back to the hotel and return the laptop. I returned to the hotel later and the cab driver met me and returned the laptop. I left Henry a great tip, but it was worth every penny to get back my $2000 laptop (and all the photos, documents, etc. that were on it). True story about a nice hotel with a great employee who went above and beyond in helping me out in a bad spot. We'll be back, for sure. read more

The location is ridiculously good. Quick subway access (it's easy and nothing bad to worry about). Times Square is walking distance as is the Theater District. It is a quiet hotel. Great service. It is not the 4 Seasons or extravagant nor is the price though! It is not a trash heap and overall a very solid well decorated place. It is older but redone very well. A corner room is a must, the size in fact asking for two king beds is the way to go. No real room service. As silly as this sounds, theirvis a McDonald's 4 mins down the street, a money a d time saver when on vacation and you dont wantvto spend a New York fortune on food and are looking to get away quick to a play or a day trip.
