We came for a quick coffee break on Saturday. All the tables were full but we managed to snag a seat on the communal tables outside We got the latte and the snickerdoodle latte. The latte is definitely better. You can taste the flavour of the beans in the latte much better. It gets muted in the snickerdoodle one. I would come back for the latte. I read on Reddit that their chocolate chip cookie is the best and I had to try it for myself. The cookie was good. But not the best I've ever had. I prefer crunchy and chewy cookies but this one is more cakey. The outside was a bit crispy and crunchy but it was too cakey in the middle. The chocolate chips were definitely a bit overly sweet. A warm, small cafe with a decent assortment of pastries and other food items, including chips, spreads, and frozen food (e.g., pies). They also have dog treats and seasonal offerings (like popsicles in the summer). Their pastries are delivered by third-parties and therefore aren't always the most fresh. I loved their scones before they switched scone suppliers. Drinks are decent but, as with everything else in this shop, a little on the pricey side. There's a fair amount of outdoor seating with a little indoor seating as well. Outdoor seating is shaded and comfortable in the summer. It can get uncomfortably warm inside in the summers. Service is friendly but otherwise unremarkable. Café is in a residential area without a dedicated parking space and the residents of the neighborhood usually take up the street parking. read more

I just moved in around the corner from this residentially located coffee shop. It's a beautiful, intimate coffee shop with baked items, sandwiches, and various canned and packaged goods of pretty high-quality. Among their ready foods includes a vegan chorizo & potato burrito ($10) and some vegan cookies (not made in-house; $~4.50). I tried the burrito, which was pretty middling and quite small for the price. This could be improved big time. I also had an Americano, which was fine, priced reasonably. Service isn't particularly friendly but it's perfectly competent. The spot itself is really, really nice, and given its proximity to us, I'm sure I'll be back. read more

I was so taken by this place while passing on my bike that I had to quickly screech my brakes to a halt in order to bookmark it for future enjoyment. The residential location and homey feel of the cafe are incredibly inviting, making it seem like you're entering a cross between someone's well appointed kitchen and an old school apothecary/soda fountain (complete with broad white marble counter tops). It's not every day that a proprietor takes the time to chat and ask your name, but Leslie could not have been nicer, establishing the kind of personalized rapport that will absolutely make me return again. I'm not a coffee drinker, but I did have tasty Tandoori chicken wrap sandwich. In addition to a selection of pre-made sandwiches, they also offer a good assortment of baked goods (including gluten free options), a freezer full of Earnest Ice Cream jars, and a small variety of grocery staples like condiments, crackers, etc. If you live in the neighborhood and can't stomach the craziness of Cambie, they might have what you're looking for. read more

This place is another adorable, off the beaten track addition to the neighbourhood. In a space that has a somewhat colourful background, it's nice to see fresh faces take up this cute little neighbourhood nook. They're pouring some seriously good coffee and their tiny grocery section is going the way of Le Marche and boasts excellent local fare and fun, unique items. It's where Nice Pops and I cheated on Johnny Pops together. It was a confusing afternoon. Super bonus? The work with City Beet Farm, who grow veggies just down the street and sell their fare on Sunday afternoons. Talk about local, try dishing up a salad grown three blocks away! Lovely touch. Owners are fabulously friendly. Always nice to see Earnest Ice Cream in the mix. I'm saving that last star for the food. The day I went, they seemed pretty low on munchables and I ended up going elsewhere for lunch. But I hear fabulous things about the baked goods, so i'll have to investigate again. This is my favourite neighbourhood cafe but the reason I'm not giving it five stars is because they sometimes forget your food when it's busy, and attitude of a staff member. There is one individual that works here in particular, with short hair, that always seems to be rude. From my interactions with them, I always feel that my ordering is an inconvenience, or a chore. I don't get welcomed the same from them as from others that know me here, nor does this person try to make conversation which normally they do. - today I purchased a scone and asked for it to be warmed. It was sitting in the microwave for a long time, and I had to go in to remind them. At this moment, this person ran to the microwave to take it out, and without even acknowledging me or apologizing yelled out that my scone was ready and slammed it onto the counter. Obviously at this point the scone wasn't warm anymore, and I didn't want to feel like further of an inconvenience by asking them to re-warm it. I know what it's like to work in a cafe so I know that it can be a flurry at times, but please practice outstanding customer service - in this situation by offering your apologies and offering to re-warm. I'm sorry but it is not that hard to just be nice. I try not to come here when I see that this person is working as it makes me uncomfortable and unwelcome. When I go to any coffee shop, I want to feel good and happy. I am there to not only support your business, but as well, that is normally the first human interaction that I get. With this, to put it frankly, it ruins my morning when you feel as though your presence is not wanted. This is unfortunate because as I stated above, this is truly mine and my family's favourite place to come to and this person's attitude is deterring us from visiting as often as we used to. read more

cute little marketplace cafe! filled with natural light from skylights and windows, its a nice place to sit down with friends. it was hard to choose what pastry to get with my drink, but i decided to get their cute iced easter-themed cookies; a thick, butterg shortbread with a good ratio of cookie:chocolate icing. delicious! they serve harney & son's tea in nice teapots. i reccomend the "yellow & blue" blend; an herbal tea with a mellow taste. their grocery selection is interesting, and the staff is friendly! a downside would be their small seating space and even smaller tables. i suggest you come here when the weather's nice so you can enjoy their outdoor seating. read more

Home of hands down the best latte I have had in my entire life. Having experienced the best coffee that the Pacific Northwest, Germany and New Zealand have to offer I can honestly say they just don't measure up to The MIghty Oak. I'm not sure if it is the dairy they use, the beans they buy or the techniques employed but there is magic in every cup served at 198 W 18th Ave. BONUS you get great little shortbread cookies with your latte. Be prepared to wait a bit when you arrive as it is almost always busy and they really take their time to craft your drink. But just like the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. Having had the opportunity to work at The Mighty Oak this past spring(2013) I can say with absolute confidence that John and Heidi are the best employers I have ever had. Not only do they care about their store, their products and their customers. They care about their employees and it shows. In the short time that I was employed at The Mighty Oak I had two personal incidents, both of which conflicted with my work. Two weeks after starting I had a death in the family resulting in me having to leave for 10 days. I called John who was compassionate and incredibly patient, telling me to take all the time I needed. And that time made all the difference to me and my family. The Mighty Oak is quickly becoming a pillar of the community, but more importantly, the benchmark for small business practice in Vancouver. My new favourite coffee spot! I happened upon the Mighty Oak on a morning run and was immediately taken by its location, nestled in the middle of a residential neighbourhood. My boyfriend and I returned this past Sunday to enjoy Americanos (superb), croissants (delectable) and the classic interior aesthetic. We also picked up some organic milk and farm fresh eggs, neither unreasonably priced. It's obvious that much care went into the design of the space with beautiful tiling, tables and food layout. There's lovely planters outside with neat side tables that will be perfect for wamer days to come. I also enjoyed the curated selection of high quality groceries (a cheese and deli counter!) as well as other treats to take home with you. The only disapointment for me was that they do not have any drip coffee. While I enjoy espresso, some mornings I just need another kind of caffeine fix. Nonethless, I am so glad to have found this hidden gem and will be returning often! read more

I saw this in an article for Best Coffee in Vancity Buzz and decided to book mark this place as part of my 100 coffee shops in 52 weeks challenge. I must have walked by this place a million times thinking that it was just another house on the block. In fact you wouldn't think that there would be a coffee shop in the area since it is situated in the middle of a few blocks of just homes. Inside it looks like a small home with some organic groceries and basic coffee made with a really good press and a barista who knows his stuff. I just had a decafe latte to go. I legitimately haven't even set foot inside this place but I walked past today and fell in love and firmly believe that I will still love it once I set foot inside it and so I'm preemptively reviewing it anyway. Run on sentences aside, The Mighty Oak is one of those wonderful mirage-like places, a la Le Marche St George, that appear seemingly out of nowhere as you're strolling through a quiet residential neighbourhood. I was actually shocked when I first noticed it, and a bit intimidated, as understandably there was only one person working and no customers inside and sometimes those kinds of situations can be awkward. I only managed a slow walk-by, ogling from afar. But then I went home and researched it a little bit, and it turns out The Mighty Oak is a new and ridiculously cute coffee shop and neighbourhood grocer that sells things like ketchup and milk but also has baked goods and espresso. I am so excited about my new find, especially since they stock Earnest Ice Cream and their interior is gorgeous. I cannot wait to properly visit. read more

The coffee is fab, the croissants are even better, and it's one of the few places in the city to get Earnest Ice Cream (the browned butter praline is the best thing I've ever eaten.) Best americano in the city (most days). From time to time, the espresso is perhaps a bit burnt or something. I live a block away and I love that I can pick up eggs or butter or a baguette (and an americano of course) without having to do the big grocery store ordeal. I wish they were open a bit earlier, but the owners (who are great people) have young children and want to be with them. I respect that. read more
