Monk's been meditating about some high quality Indian Cuisine! If you live or work in the near heights area near Washington and have a craving for Indian this is the place hands down! This may be the best I've had at a restaurant. I've had great Indian food served up by my friends mom from southern India. She was a guest chef in Manhattan and amazing. Monk's is fantastic! I'm Indian and am picky, and really enjoyed what we ordered. The Hara Masaley ka Bhuna Paneer was outstanding--big chunks of marinated paneer with just the right amount of char from the tandoor, coupled with chunks of green bell pepper and onions. This is the kind of paneer that I dream of, and few places offer this dish, let alone get it right. For that reason alone, I'll be heading to Monk's regularly. The special momo was spicy and good, as was the goat biryani. The only thing that was slightly disappointing was the cumin lamb--it wasn't as flavorful lamb as I would have hoped. But my spouse liked it, so no worries. Is this the best place to eat Indian food in all of Houston? No. But it is certainly the best Indian food in the greater Heights area and well worth a visit. read more

I ordered the Goat Chettinad lunch special. I don't know why they bother even calling it a special it was still $14. The portion size was a joke. It was a kids size with very little meat and 3 large bones with absolutely no meat on them. The curry part I could've replicated at home easily. I personally did not care too much for the food. Tried the samosas, chicken tikka masala, and paneer chettinad with a side of garlic naan. The samosas and garlic naan were very good, but the curries were just ok. We found the chicken tikka masala to be very sweet and were not anticipating that. We stumbled on this restaurant through Yelp reviews and being a lover of both Chinese and Indian food we decided to give it a try. It's take-out only next to a gas station which we didn't expect. Had it not been for the great reviews I doubt we would have considered ordering from them. We ordered the saag paneer, the Manchurian with chicken, the spicy masala, and the garlic naan. The portions were pretty huge and the flavors were delicious! The saag paneer is your typical saag that we requested spicy and with paneer, a soft cheese that has a similar texture to tofu when cooked that we sopped up with the hot garlic naan. The Manchurian chicken was battered and covered with a sticky, spicy sauce and a side of white rice. The spicy masala was a noodle dish with veggies and your choice of protein, we chose paneer again for this. The noodles were definitely similar to Chinese lo mein, but the spice was reminiscent of Indian at lower spice level. Unfortunately, my husband dished everything out before I could take any pictures. Ok, I thought to give this place a try again in the West End area. Most people around there thinks it's the Heights area! Lol The first one I went to was on Westheimer near the Galleria area. I didn't like the Green Chilly sauce with chicken. Too much sauce and way too gooey with too much cornstarch being used!!! The same thing at this place for the Chili Pepper sauce, and Sichuan Home Style Sauce with chicken! The fried Chinese style dishes are not great for takeout!! Maybe for dine in. I asked this time not to make so gooey and they didn't make so gooey for me, but the chicken pieces were swimming in a lot of liquid! Just horrible, but the flavor of the dishes weren't that bad, just wasn't great!! I have been to a lot of Indian places in houston and usually order the same style dishes and they are great. I may give a third try for another dish that's not fried. Lol I usually give a place a try 2 or 3 times before I X'd them out! Lol read more

Last weekend, my husband and I wanted to try a new restaurant and we decided to try out The Monk's. It's tucked away in a strip mall so it was easy to overlook. We weren't going for the ambiance, but it is worth noting that it's lackluster as they don't even have background music playing. If you plan on dining in, please be advised that everyone will be able to hear your conversation. It was so awkward trying to have conversations with my husband because I knew everyone could hear. There is no ice available--only canned sodas and bottled water. Now onto the food, the food itself is good, but there aren't really true descriptions of the food, so you'll have to guess. One dish I wanted to order I was told might be too spicy, but honestly, I wish I hadn't back-pedaled because the dish I ended up settling on had no spice at all. :/ Overall, this is a decent takeout spot, but I wouldn't recommend dining in. read more

The lamb vindaloo was great but there were too many bones and the meat was mainly fat. The chicken tikka masala tasted like tomato soup with chicken in it so I wasn't impressed. However, their naan and white rice was really good and the samosas are to die for. The service was 10/10 so overall I would eat here again. read more

What a great place! We had never heard this place, but we were running errands in that area and decided to try it. My husband ordered Kadai goat - tender, a tad bit spicy but not too much, very flavorful!!! I had the saag chicken - tender, creamy, not spicy at all. They were both delicious! We also tried the momo chicken dumplings, the vegetable samosa (amazing!) and the garlic naan and plain naan, both great. We will definitely be back to try more stuff! The person behind the counter is super friendly and so excited about his food! If you're not sure what you wanna eat, he can definitely help you narrow down your option. The Chinese Bhel was good and spicy and the garlic naan was solid, but went downhill from there... the chicken momo's were pretty underwhelming, can get much better at other places in Houston. Also my Haka noodles had pieces of egg shells in it, it tasted good but biting onto an egg shell and finding more halfway thru eating it was not happy times.
