I really enjoyed this place! My buddy and i went here on a whim. Setting is small, and it was crowded when we went. There was a reserved table so o think it'd be prudent to call ahead. The food was mostly great. I loved the lamb burger and i LOVED the octopus skewer. One of the best tasting octopus ive had. I had an off menu croquet thing and i wasn't a fan. But to each their own. I love that you can order a string of beers in different sizes so you could try everything. My favorite is the coffee and Cigs so far. Give.this place a shot! Great for dates. I really wanted to love this place, especially after reading the reviews, but left feeling unsatisfied. My friend and I came here on a Friday and were really lucky to score a small table for two. There is very limited seating here, and it seemed to be fairly understaffed as well. It was difficult to tell who worked here as the servers had no distinguishing uniform. We didn't get a menu for 15 mins after being seated, but we didn't even know who to flag down. We ended up splitting 2 burgers and the garlic and herb fries. I'll be honest: I can't remember much, having eaten a little over a month ago, but the burgers were just okay and the fries were WAY too garlicky - and this is coming from someone who loves garlic. I've been impressed with the Monk's Kettle ever since my first visit years ago, and now that I've gotten reacquainted with it recently, I am still a fan! There are several places in San Francisco that are of the gastropub style, but I think this restaurant does a great job of providing both an excellent beer selection and solid food items. If you like beer, I don't think you will be disappointed with the wide selection of bottled and draft beers available. You can definitely splurge here if you are in the mood and want to pay top dollar for your suds, but I've enjoyed their more affordable draft options; I've always felt that I was getting quality beer for what I was paying without feeling like my wallet is going through a wallop. While I think beer is their primary focus, the Monk's Kettle also pays sufficient attention to food. During a recent visit, I tried their B.L.T. special and thought it was top-notch; the aioli and bacon melded well together and the fries were excellent. I will definitely be back again! read more

Came to this place when I was apartment hunting with friends in SF, and it was a great pit stop! Located in the heard of the Mission, this place had great outdoor seating and lots of hearty menu choices. We ended up getting the garlic parm fries, which were really good and came with these amazing basil ranch and aoli sauces. The Mac n Cheese was very creamy and really hit the spot. Nothing extraordinary. Small dining room has a cozy ambience but it is hard to have private conversations in this environment. The wine and beer selection is broader than expected and the server gave good recommendations based on my interest on seasonal beers. One thing I was unhappy about was how the chicken sandwich gave my friend diarrhea after the meal. I know it's from the sandwich because of the three items we ordered--fried brussel sprouts, fried chicken, and fried chicken sandwich--the only item I didn't try was the sandwich. I've been coming to this restaurant occasionally for the past 10 or so years. The times that I have visited over the past few months, I have gotten poor service. I went to the outdoor patio today. The waiter visited the tables around me while working hard to avoid eye contact with me. It got so bad that I had to try several times to flag him down as though I was trying to get a taxi (when such things existed) after a Giants game. They are handling covid really well and I appreciate how many steps were taken to make a safe dining experience. There was only one red/amber ale on tap and the bartender said I must try it so I got it and I was disappointed. It was a nitro brew and I'm not a big fan of that. Came here on a Friday night with some friends and we got seated pretty quickly but you can always hop on the Yelp waitlist beforehand. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich and the chicken was crispy and tasty. We ordered the Brussels sprouts to share and that was also very yummy. It was perfectly caramelized and did not taste bitter. They have a HUGE selection of beer. Since we never tried sour beer before, we decided to order a bottle to share. We asked our server what he recommended and he suggested the passionately peach sour beer. It was very sour but also quite sweet at the same time. You know those places that are over-hyped? Yup, Monk's Kettle is one of them. I've heard COUNTLESS amazing reviews about MK whether through Thrillist, SF residents, or Bay Area friends...and I thought DAYUM this place must be super ballin' or something! Welps, to say the least, I was let down not only because of the high prices, but also because I think SF has other great bars and spots that are better priced and more unique than this space. I came here with 3 other friends with the intention of ONLY getting their drinks at the bar, and (I hate to sound like a prissy princess, but) were lead to two stools...soooooo I guess that means that we have to draw straws and find out who has to stand? I mean c'mon, the prices (pretty high) should reflect the experience AND the quality, right? Also, the time that we were there was very early in the evening's festivities, and the place wasn't even packed yet! My SF resident friend said that their sour beers were definitely unique and a must-taste here, and we found out that the cheapest one was around $15! Did someone say #bougielife? I got a draught beer because I'm a cheap beer snob, but the whole experience wasn't just cutting it for me. There was a "bouncer" at the front of the entrance...who was basically a yoga-esque looking lady who was kind and polite, but I have nothing to comment about that. The bartenders were very knowledgeable and helpful--so I have only great words to say to them :) I hope I'm not sounding ridiculous right now, but I'm glad I came and had the experience of pondering on what drink to get on their extensiiiiiiive beer list. I love their beer selections! It's one of the places to go to when in Mission for bar hopping! Their menu for entrees, exhibits modern American cuisine. I ordered up their Hangar steak with cranberry marinade delight with mashed potatoes on the bottom of the savory meat sauce and it was fabulous! I'm actually sad to give Monk's Kettle a 1 star because I wanted to like it - it's like Abbot's Cellar but I consider it the original high end gastropub in the Mission (from the 2 years that I have lived here heh). It's small, cute, the beer list is respectable and the food looks amazing. The service however is terrible, they're pretentious to the point of being straight up rude. When I asked about the alcohol content in the beer, she pointed to the door and told me to get shots next door. Um rude much? So the beer selection is pretty good but you can get better quality beers at Abbot's, more choices on tap at Zeitgeist (and cheaper). Great new tavern for the beer connoisseur. Even a curmudgeon drinker like me, who only drinks stouts. Well guess what? They have 6 stouts to choose from and none of them are Guinness (I say they bump it up to 7)! Although they only had one of the two on tap, the Old Rasputin, it was excellent. I found a kindered spirit as I accepted my stout, asking me what I had ordered. We then discussed how once you go black you don't go back..hahaha! He too was on a quest to go through all the stouts and the porters in a swift manner. For my non beer drinking companion, they had a black currant cider from Colfax (which I pass on the way to Tahoe and back) which was also quite excellent. The place is super packed and unfortunately it was mostly guys. I counted four women which included the one I brought along. The atmosphere however is still lively and getting a beer was still quick despite the crowd. There's fun to be had while you drink, scribbling on the chalk board and the smell of the burgers from behind it were heavenly even though we had just eaten. If you're exiting from the back door, watch out for the good drop. I was looking back at the bar when I stepped out and nearly franked myself if it were not for my Jet Li like reflexes. Last Saturday, Gayle and I decided that we needed to get out of the house and have a fun field trip. She suggested that we pick a BART station and wander off from there. Rockridge and Glen Park were initially considered and rejected. I then suggested that Gayle contact her nephew (Ben) to see if he and his Wife (Fathima) wanted to meet in the Mission (where they lived) for Lunch. And before you could say "16th and Mission" it was a 12 Noon date at The Monk's Kettle. The 4 of us had a great time. We sat outside on a rare warm and sunny day and chatted away over a nice selection of craft beers (draft this time), delicious appetizers of Caramelized brussels sprouts (with honey, balsamic red onion reduction, lemon) and Pretzel knots (with beer cheese fondue and house mustard). We continued on with 2 Monk's Burgers (with fries to share), 1 Lamb Burger, and a Tuna Nicoise Salad Sandwich. All were excellent. Service was friendly, unobtrusive, and knowledgeable concerning food options and beer selection. It was also fun to interact with the dog at the next table and talk about life in the city and upcoming family activities. After our goodbye hugs, Ben and Fatz headed home, while Gayle and I needed to work off a very satisfying and filling lunch. After a stop for ice cream at Bi-Rite Creamery, we walked to Castro Street, turned left, went up and over to 24th Street, strolled through Noe Valley, and returned to the 24th and Mission BART station. I came here on a Friday night around 10:30PM. The place is relatively small and if you want to sit at a table, your whole party HAS to order dinner... Which wasn't what me and my friends wanted to do (but don't worry, you can order appetizers at the bar if you want!), so we had to wait for a place on the booth or stand around awkwardly. Fortunately, when we got in, a group of 3 was leaving and we immediately go to take their place at the bar. I'm not very knowledgeable of beers, but my friend recommend me to try anything because everything is good! So once I looked through the menu, I noticed sour beer... Whoa. I asked the bartender about that because I personally love sour and he told me that it's getting pretty popular! So I ordered the Rodenbach (sour beer). It's also frequently packed, so they have a bouncer outside to make sure only a certain number of people get in. The food is not bad--I got the mussels, which was pretty good, with a large piece of bread to soak up the sauce. The price is decent. The portions are not huge, but enough to get you full. Bryce and Jomo were the staff that waited on us and were very intelligent on the food served as well as the drinks that were available. I got a plumb wine and Mac and cheese with added bacon. The cheese was not overpowering but a perfect creamy balance of white cheese and good seasoning, the noodles were perfectly cooked, the bacon was not overly crispy or under cooked and it did not have an over exaggerated amount of bread crumbs. It was one of the best, if not the best Mac I've ever had. My family and I all tried each other's food; we got the split pea soup, the mixed green salad, the brussel sprouts and the steak fries. Everything that I tried was incredibly good. For what I tried, I loved the brussel sprouts; which were very good especially if you love sweet brussel sprouts. Came here for dinner on a Friday night after hearing about their huge beer menu and great food. We were seated immediately at a table and didn't have to wait for a party of two that night. For beer, it seems like you can't go wrong with Monk's Kettle - they had everything I could ever want and they also had a dictionary with popular beer terminology in case you need a refresher on anything. For food, we ordered a couple things to share together: + Brussel Sprouts: Delicious. Best Brussel sprouts I've had in a long time. Every bite made me want more, and we decided to get a second order of these. The acidity on these Brussel sprouts helps make it a great pairing for a beer of your choice. + Lamb Burger with Fries: The actual burger was very OK/average at best. It wasn't seasoned very well, and it was pretty bland in my honest opinion. The fries were really good though - nice and crispy, salted, and delicious. + Fried Oyster: Not bad - nice crispy outside with a nicely cooked oyster on the inside. The sauces seemed standard and tasted alright with the oyster. I probably wouldn't order this one again though. The next time I'm here, I'll definitely order the Brussel sprouts, fries, and get adventurous with some of their other starters. I don't get to visit Monk's Kettle often, mostly because when I'm in the area it's way too crowded to stop in for a drink. That being said, when I'm around for a film at Roxie, I always poke my head in to see how the tables look and whether I can stop for a pint or two. Monk's Kettle is truly a bar made for beer lovers. Their draft list is huge, and the bottle list isn't anything to shy away from either. More importantly, they stock the type of craft beer that sadly can be difficult to find at many bars in SF. Expect to find local, small breweries like Henhouse, Berryessa, Seven Stills, etc. For IPA lovers (like myself), you will have plenty of options to satisfy your needs. I have yet to try any food here, as I always sort of assumed it was meat heavy and vegan lacking. Though looking at their menu more recently, it looks like they do at least have a vegan burgers option. Will have to stop by again soon and check it out. read more

A hot place in the Mission as there is a pretty huge wait for a table inside on a weekday for an early dinner. Clearly they know what they're doing. We started with some meat and cheese which was honestly a bit of a let down. My expectations may be too high, but was not all that impressed with the meats or cheeses. I did very much like their apricot chutney and their mustard though. I very much like their burger. Big and tasty. Meat cooked perfectly to rare/medium rare with huge flavor. Delicious caramelized onions to bring the cheese and greens together. Served next to a large bed of fries which were standard. The flank steak. This was okay. The SAUCE was magical. A mushroom cream sauce with HUGE flavor. Unfortunately, the steak was too chewy. Lots of tendons and what not, a bit difficult to eat. Maybe should've ordered it a little less rare. OUTSTANDING food & OUTSTANDING Covid preparation. I cannot express how impressed I am having dined here tonight with our group of 4. I think every restaurant out there should follow The Monk's Kettle as a role model example. Upon arriving for our reservation, they explained to us the new protocols and rules: everyone including guests must wear masks unless actively eating/drinking (e.g. put on masks when server is coming), they are reducing server visits to the table so not to disturb as frequently (they were perfect - super attentive but without feeling unsafe). They had pre sanitized our table, provided sanitizer on the table and a post-meal alcohol swab. Menus are one-time use, payment method was well thought out (they brought the machine out so we could pay and pre sanitized the touchscreen to sign/tip). Felt really relaxed and safe eating here knowing that the team is so focused on guest safety, and all employees in the kitchen were wearing masks properly (no nose poppers). Then of course the food: Pretzel appetizer was perfectly soft and just the right balance of salty. It was great on its own, but the beer cheese and Dijon mustard sides were fun additions. Beer cheese Mac n cheese was really nice, since we had just eaten the pretzels we added some more salt (provided on the table) to ours since it seemed a bit less. Garlic Parmesan fries to share were particularly great because of the rustic and unique ketchup they use. And lastly, the monk's kettle burger was everything I wanted from a burger.
