We stopped by for a lunch at the monkey duck this afternoon. The location is beautiful, the food is average. We sat outside at a table, overlooking palm trees, and the beach in the ocean. What a sight! We started with decent onion, rings, and then we had a grouper sandwich, and Seafood fried platter. The grouper was good but not great, just good fish. The seafood platter was uneven. One barbecue shrimp was fantastic, the fried fish stick made of cod was undercooked with some of the cod still raw. The fried clam strips were OK. The meal was an uneven. The service was really good. Really love this restaurant. It sits right on the Gulf of Mexico in Captiva florida. Plenty of seating outside. They usually have live music and a walk up bar outside. Dave's son was visiting us from Maryland and he hadn't been to Sanibel or Captiva, since he was very young. We also wanted to show him the devastation from Hurricane Ian along with the rebuilding. So we decided to take a ride with Freckles and son in tow. We heard that the Mucky Duck had reopened and when we got there the parking lot was overflowing. Saturday was a beautiful day with delightful cool breezes off of the gulf. We were able to get a table outside in about 20 minutes. They also have chairs lined up in the sand for you to sit on while you wait along with some picnic tables if you want to self serve. The guys wanted an IPA and some onion rings and I got a cup of clam chowder. We were seated under an umbrella and it was just breathtaking to look at the water. It's hard to believe that this area was underwater just 6 months ago! So we sat and enjoyed ourselves and the beautiful scenery before heading home. read more

Restaurant is on the water with great views, indoor and outdoor seating available. They open at 11:30 for lunch and dinner. The staff were very nice and attentive. We had a party of four. Three had the fish and chips with a spinach salad. Salad was very fresh with mandarin oranges, nuts and bacon. The fish was okay. It appeared to be frozen fillets deep fried. I had a bacon cheeseburger. The bun was too big and hard so I only ate part of that. The burger was good but also appeared to be a frozen patty as it was very dense. For dessert we had the mango cheesecake. It was very good. We sat outside and enjoyed the view and the sounds of the osprey in the tree above. Ate here in February and again in July. In Feb, we arrived 30 mins before opening and secured a picnic table outside. We did not drive, but were dropped off via golf cart from the Tween Resort. It was a beautiful day, service was great and the food is better that what I expected. We had the coconut shrimp, which was hand prepared on site. Not pre-battered so it was fresh. It had been decades since I last came to Mucky Duck. It pretty much looks like the same so you're going for the views and nostalgia. The location is outstanding. Great parking during dining (cannot go to the beach after while leaving your car there even though it calls to you, but can sit in the rocker chairs out front). The beach out front is simply fabulous. There's really not public parking around so the beach is mostly just filled with people staying at the private homes nearby. We came for lunch this week. No wait if you come at opening, although front window seats go quickly. The hostess was friendly and engaging. Other employees were fine, but pretty lackluster. The beach scene is so wonderful that it would be nice if the employees would rise to the expectation of wonderful as well. Menu is pretty average and food is meh, but again, going for the name and view. Had the burger, grilled chicken and crabcake sandwich. Burger was okay - not as good as Culver's. Grilled chicken was fine and crabcake wouldn't order again. Everything comes with coleslaw. Only sub for coleslaw is cottage cheese - hadn't heard that option for a couple decades. Fries were pretty good. Figure at least $20/meal for a sandwich, plus of course any cocktails, tips, etc, which is what we expected. This was a real happening. Circled a few times looking for parking when I finally asked staff & they said that we could block the employee spots they won't be leaving. Gave our name and was impressed that we were able to get a green umbrella table next to the outdoor bar and music. We listened to all the hits from the 1980's. Lindsay, our waitress from New York, was attentive & on point. We started with Oyster Rockefeller and cold beer on tap. The 8 oysters were fresh, big juicy and delicious. This was just a "fun" place to go!! Located right on the beach with breathtaking views of the sunset this is a place you MUST go when on the "island". The place closes between meal times so we got in line for the dinner rush. Get there early because this place is busy!! The place observed the covid19 protocols of the State of FL which was a packed house wearing a mask. We were seated shortly after the place opened and the wait staff is "Johnny- on-spot" taking your order. I ordered the shrimp and my wife ordered the mahi-mahi. The wait time was a bit long but they seated all the customers upon opening and the kitchen must have been "slammed"!! It was about 20-25 minutes but the scenery filled that time nicely. We elected to sit inside (as the wait was shorter) but they have a nice outside dining area. The inside has many things to look at and if you get bored you can always watch the sunset on the beach out the windows! The shrimp I ordered was HUGH, tasty and very filling. The lightly battered (fresh) shrimp was extremely good. FF were ok but I was there for the seafood and I was not disappointed. The mahi-mahi had great flavor as well and you can't go wrong ordering either or by the looks of it, anything on the menu. A MUST visit, we will return. Parking is interesting, don't park in their lot if you are going to the beach because it will not end well. What a perfect spot. Haven't been there in 40 years and yes it was pretty much the same. We went there for a snack, a drink and a tee shirt. Only beer and wine here but that was fine. I had a Bloody Mary made with 40 proof wine. Perfect. My wife had the mimosa which is served with a split of champagne. Excellent. We ordered one of the house specialities, Duck Duck Shrimp. Mucky Duck is just one of those places that you want to go to with plenty of outdoor seating picnic tables with umbrellas. Adirondack chairs facing the ocean and Beautiful sunsets and long walks on the beach. It is located on Captiva Island at the very far end of Sanibel. You can only get there by driving thru Sanibel it's a beautiful drive. Mucky Duck doesn't open till 5:00 put your name in and you can sit inside or out. There's a bar outside so just come and enjoy. I ordered the Chicken Piccata it was sautéed chicken breasts topped with a lemon caper butter sauce oh my it was wonderful also served with green beans and a side of your choice I got the rice.You get a basket of rolls. I have to start off my review by being honest: The day I went to The Mucky Duck, it was one of the Sundays in August where the toll to get over the bridge was paid for, courtesy Lee County. The Lee County Board of Commissioners / Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau wanted to have a program in place for six weeks (August 6 to September 10, 2023), where each Sunday would be the day people could cross the Causeway in order to help locals build the community back up from the destruction caused by Hurricane Ian in the end of September, 2022. They called it "Savor the Shore". Three stars but hovering on 4, as this was the first time in for me. It was a long and winding trip of an interesting treat to get to the restaurant. I was told that people completely rave about this place and you are so lucky if you can get in, get fed and get out, as it gets packed from the jump. To think that remark was true even before Ian graced Southwest Florida. Seeing it now makes it even more so! I had gone with one other person, and we had planned the trip accordingly - we were going to get to The Mucky Duck before it opened so we could get a parking spot and get in line. Sure enough, by 11:15am, the lot was starting to get full. It was to the point a staff member was telling people where and how to park. I have to say, the guy was nice and didn't make a scene with anyone. He kept people moving and was polite enough to tell us that we needed to move up just another foot in our spot because we were a little too far into the turning lane for people to get by. Once we got it sorted, we got out of the car and got in line. About tenth in line we were, at this point in the morning. The restaurant opens promptly at 11:30, so expect quite the few people in front of you, if you think you can swing in at 11:25 and get first seating (good luck if you try to show up right at opening). By the time the doors were unlocked and the lunch bell rang, the amount of people waiting to get in was long. A few parties were hanging out at the outside tables, as you had a choice to eat a la sand or a la air conditioning. It being about 100° with humidity, my choice was "inside, please". If the Mucky Duck parking lot is tiny, then the inside is just as big. I think there were two dozen tables, maybe a little more, but nothing outrageous. There were more humans waiting for a table (both inside and out) than there may have been seating. Which I think speaks volumes for what this place is capable of. Like I said, people rave about it and if you don't get in and get a seat, you aren't going to get a meal. From the word go, the wait staff scurried around like the packed house is nothing out of the ordinary. Beverage orders were made, jokes were laughed at (thanks to our waiter, Chris, for pretending to spray ketchup on all of his patrons) and no one felt rushed to order / shovel their food in their mouth. Leave the bucket and trowel for the ocean view while sitting at a picnic table outside if you want to play with anything. How was the food, you might ask? The person I was with ordered a water and fried shrimp ("platter" of sorts - came with fries and coleslaw) while I ordered water and fish and chips (comes with fries and coleslaw). The waters were cold and the shrimp was crisp. By no means were the crustaceans tiny like their namesake. Each piece looked like they were on a healthy workout diet, built up with no additives, just living the breaded salty life dream. The fries were shoestring and the coleslaw was.. well... coleslaw - not overly mayonaissed but not under impressed. The fish wasn't overly battered but it was slightly difficult to cut into each of the three (good sized) pieces, as the meal gets served in a plastic basket with wax paper between the food and the basket. It almost felt like previously frozen battered fish (grocery store level), but the actual pieces of cod tasted better than it looked (they were flaky and warm). I would probably order it again to give it another chance. I like fish n chips, so maybe it was all the wall art distracting me from properly enjoying this fresh meal in front of my face. I'm sure the lines get slow in mid day, but by the time I left (around 12:45), the line of cars were still coming down the road pretty heavily and people were trying to get a space to park. I'd love to say I'd be back to try again, so maybe it's not as crowded during the week. I'd have to try then, and see where the menu might take me. read more

Location is what makes this place special. It is right on the beach and is the perfect spot for watching the sunset. Lots of windows facing the beach and lots of outside seating as well. My daughter had the coconut ship, my husband had grouper with piccata sauce and i had the salad with grilled grouper. All were excellent! There was live music the night we were there which made it even more special. There are outside games and chairs to sip on a drink while waiting on your table. I grew up on island and have been eating at this establishment since my parents had me in diapers. I used to drag fish up the beach to have the cooks fillet and cook. I went there recently with my wife and her friend. After spending 186$ on 8 drinks and apps I decided to walk down to the beach to rinse my feet. Upon returning about 3 min later i found a server who put our bill on the table and instructed my wife and friend to exit the front because we were obviously done. We had a group of 8 friends that we called and told to turn around and go to pawnbroker instead. If they knew I was treating to a champagne entree birthday dinner with a 5000$ tab I think things would have been different however I will NEVER go to or spend a single dollar back on this establishment. Wow! What a great place! I last reviewed this restaurant 7 years ago, but after dinner last night I need to write this update. My family (wife and kids ages 16 and 12) come here every year while we are in the area on vacation. While the vibe has always been great, and the food just ok, the main reason people come are the awesome sunsets. While the vibe and sunsets are still awesome, I am happy to report our food experience was also awesome last night. The outdoor section is broken into the eating section and the just hanging out section. While hanging out people will order drinks at the bar and just sit at tables having fun. It is not at all rowdy and is perfectly acceptable for kids of all ages. The outdoor eating section allows you to literally eat at tables in the sand, Listen to live music (most nights), and enjoy the great beach vibes. They also have an air conditioned indoor section. On most nights you are looking at a 20-60 minute wait. Upon arriving last night I knew I was there for the experience more than the food, but was I wrong! My wife had the Mahi Mahi special, and loved it. My kids had the pasta special with chicken, and they finished it all. As for me, I am not a fish of chicken person, and I never thought the steaks at the MD were that special. I took a chance on the Pork Chop with green beans.......soooooo. Yummy. Add to this my app of onion rings (some of the best I have ever tasted), and it all adds up to a great night. The sunset was of course amazing. Food way overpriced, we went for a girls lunch, one hot dog (COLD), one chili dog, one cup chowder(meh) two steamed shrimp appetizers and one sandwich. I really loved our visit to the Mucky Duck. We took a day drive from the east to the west coast of Florida on a beautiful Sunday morning. Sanibel and Captiva were our destinations. We arrived at an early hour to find by chance and attend a local Farmers Market. Next stop was Captiva Beach at the end of the island. Parking was impossible so we did a turn around and started heading back to Sanibel passing a familiar area. I asked my friend to go into this little shopping village because i think i had been there before. We literally ran into the Mucky Duck at the end of the street. The restaurant has outdoor seating , beach chairs and is located right on the beach. It also had a great indoor bar and restaurant seating. It has been there for many years. I was there several years ago. We watched a sunset while eating raw Oyster's and drinking our favorite beverages. There was a parking attendant and several empty spaces, no charge. We got there at a good time, around 11am. I'm sure the parking lot would have been full if we arrived any later. We sat at the bar and ordered some soft drinks and a smoked fish plate. It came with crackers, toasted Panini triangles, fruit, veggies, and a wonderful smoked fish dip. 10.95? The menu was loaded with fresh seafood and i watched as the dishes come out from the kitchen. Everything looked great. The service was very good although they were very busy. One of the bartenders even gave us a tip on finding a great local beach. We were able to leave our car at the restaurant and walk down on their beach. I didn't ask how long we could've stayed but we did stay a while relaxing on the sand and walking on the beach. What you order here will dictate your star rating ... the menu has good things and bad things. Stick with the staples (burgers, etc.) if that is what you are in the mood for, or the fish ... and you'll do alright. I was very surprised the menu wasn't more fish-centric being on the water. There were surprisingly few local items on the menu here. The Grouper sandwich was amazing ... pro tip: it is only offered fried on the menu but they will grill it for you if you ask. Pro tip #2 ... they will give you a side salad to replace your french fries, if you ask. First off, the parking here is a complete and utter absolute shit show around lunch or sunset. They would serve themselves well by doing valet. Trust me ... if you are staying nearby and can walk from your resort, do so! There is a long line of cars waiting to get a spot and spaces are tight! We waited 20 minutes before a group left their spot. On the way out, we noticed a dent in our car where someone either opened the door on our car or fell into it with a chair or cooler. Parking is such a nightmare, people get stressed and become jerkoffs as they wait for a table. Tempers are flaring. I saw two folks get into a little tiff as one felt the other should have held the door longer for the other. When things are stressful and there are lines/waits, it brings out the worst in people, even on vacation. Word to the wise park elsewhere and walk in (beach or street entrance) or take a fuckin' chill pill and relax once you get inside. Most people order at the counter and then jockey for spaces at the outside tables and picnic tables. It can be chaotic. We opted to avoid that stress and eat inside. It's been around since the 70's and the decor reflects it. Wood paneling, little Irish signs, etc. There is a nice bar which inexplicably has no seats ... its all stand up. The food is hit or miss. I got a grilled grouper sandwich which was amazing. One of the best I had, even if it was not seasoned at all ... a little lemon wedge fixed that. She had their 'famous' shrimp dish which is a skewer of 5 shrimp wrapped in bacon and brushed with BBQ sauce. It was pretty blah. The portion was small. Way more french fries than entree. We felt like it should have been served over grits. It's nothing you couldn't make on your own grill. It was just below average all around. They have a good beer selection with a few local options. I recommend the Take 5 IPA which was actually quite good on draft. The prices are reasonable for a resort town/island ... yet on the high side for an everyday restaurant. This is a Captiva institution and a spot favored by locals and tourists alike. I'd much rather eat at The Bubble Room across the street ... but for a few drinks just steps from the beach, this is the spot which makes you feel like you are on vacation. read more

The Mucky Duck was our go to in Sanibel - we went today for the first time back on the island since Ian - the service was awful- the servers were rude! apparently, they like their island without tourists - not a friendly welcome in sight - it was as if we were burdening them with our presence - the entire restaurant was empty - yet they wouldn't sit us until the entire party arrived we were 10 - 7 at restaurant 3 walking to restaurants - The three people working we saw at first couldn't be bothered - only to tell us we needed to wait - we had limited napkins - I had to stand up to get more , the blond waiter guy was super rude - I had to get up and go to the bar to refill our drinks literally empty the place and three of their servers/ workers sitting around talking read more

Many years ago we stayed at South Seas Plantation. We couldn't afford to eat there back then so we walked around and came upon the Mucky Duck. It was quiet small in those days and there was maybe ten outdoor picnic tables. You could buy a burger and a beer and watch the sunset and sometimes a porpoise or two. Flash forward about fifty years. It is a much larger with inside and outside dining. You can still sit on a rocking chair and watch the world go by. It was reasonably windy that day. My wife got chewed by the no-serums. So bring your insect repellent of choice. The clam chowder was awesome. Probably the best I have ever had. Everything else was excellent.
