This was our first experience visiting The Mug. My husband and I love trying local establishments and were excited to give this place a try. Let me start by saying I love that they use locally sourced meat and produce. And the establishment itself, while small, was cute and different. Let me give you a a breakdown of our experience... Upon arrival, we could see it was packed. We had to park across the street at the park. Not a big deal at all. We attempted to find the line and had to be redirected around the building to where the line apparently had wrapped. Also not a big deal. After 10 minutes of waiting, we still hadn't even made it in the door. The line situation once we did finally make it in was confusing. There seemed to be no order with a mass amount of people kind of just all standing around. This was annoying, but not a deal breaker. I finally make it up to order. My ordering experience was fine and the cashier seemed friendly enough. I could see they had what appeared to be two cooks and two cashiers dubbing as waitresses and making the drinks and milkshakes. Maybe hire some more staff? After reading other reviews apparently being short staffed isn't uncommon here. We venture outside to find a seat at one of the picnic tables. After an hour of waiting, we still had not received our food. My husband went to check on it and we were told that due to the large group (a softball team) they were running behind. I should say at this point the entire softball team had their orders and were mostly even left. My husband asked if they could make our order to go as we had plans and couldn't wait any longer. 15 more minutes go by and here they come with our food on a platter... and not wrapped up to go as we had requested. So we then had to wait again as they went inside to wrap it up. Once we finally got to eat our food, my daughters burger was wrong. (Anyone with a picky eater knows the seriousness of this situation.) Both my burger and hers were pretty well done... teetering on the overdone line. It was good but not great. Not worth having to wait well over an hour for our food. I feel like the staff could have given the patrons a heads up on the wait time. We would have elected to go someplace else since we were short on time. There was no apology for the wait. And they seemed to just make excuses. A simple "We're so sorry for the wait" would have gone a long way. read more

I've been here a few times and the only thing that has wowed me was their ice cream. It's all so delicious! Everything else seems like standard fried food. A few more lighter options would be nice. The onion rings are a tempura battered ring. The batter is a lot thicker than a traditional onion ring batter. They have never been fully done when I get them either. Onion rings aren't supposed to be doughy. My daughter got chicken strips and fries. They were so bland she wouldn't even eat them all. I had a tenderloin. It was huge. It was okay.. Again, pretty standard. It would NOT have even been good if I didn't load it up with the condiments on them. I remember throwing away more food than I ate. It was a sad day. Lastly, we went on a cold winter Monday night. There were 2 other small parties. If anything, my food should have been fully cooked. I appreciate the small, local, business and what they are trying to do. Hopefully next time I go, it'll be on a good night. UPDATE My recent visits I've stayed away from the items mentioned above. We got a late start on our trip to Indianapolis and we're trying to find a restaurant still open at 8:20 on a Thursday nearby. Lo and behold, my fiancé found The Mug, a little dairy/grill burger joint in Greenfield. Greenfield wasn't on our list of places to see but it was so friendly and charming! The staff at the Mug were just as friendly. There's order menus at each parking spot similar to Sonic, and then limited indoor and plentiful outdoor seating. There were board games and corn hole available but despite still having a booming clientele for nearly closing time, we were served pretty quickly! (Only one game of chutes and ladders lol) Marc got the chicken tenders which he lived. They were likely fried with the pork tenderloin and as such took on a bacon taste that he thought was incredible! I got the Original burger but held the sauce and it was one of the best seasoned burgers I've ever had in my life! We shared a side of fries. They give you the option of regular fries or hand cut from local farms. Spend the extra dollar and go local! They were freshly and so crispy! Here's the best part though, almost all of the stuff at the Mug seems to be locally sourced! Love small places like this :) you've got to try this detour while traveling down I-70! Their food is great and it's a really fun atmosphere. I love going there in the summer and sit outside and play board games with my son.

I have to say that I really like The Mug. I wish there were more healthy options on the menu, though! I think the grilled chicken sandwich is the closest they get, but even that comes on a white bun, and the only sides that come with it are full of fat, calories, and carbs (save for apple slices, but I don't want a kids meal). Most of the food is quite greasy and very indulgent. It is most certainly quite good, but it isn't really amazingly good. I would give the food (not including the ice cream), itself, two-and-a-half stars and call it "average". It just seems like they're trying too hard. The BLT really doesn't need all that bread, and the pork tenderloin is so big it's kind of a joke and a nuisance to eat. Also, the service is hit and miss, but they don't seem too worried about that, as I'm constantly seeing them make excuses for it. For evidence of that, you'll see a note on the ordering stand outside. Or, just check their Facebook page. What is really so great and alluring about The Mug is the history of the location (it was f/k/a "Frosty Mug" and basically a tradition in Greenfield), as well as the locally-sourced fare. I absolutely love knowing that I'm eating locally- and humanely-raised meat, as well as other local farmers' locally-raised items. Supporting local businesses is extremely important to me. Oh, and the ice cream. THE ICE CREAM! It's delicious (and local)! So, the concept of The Mug earns them an extra star or so. I really wish they had salads or something! UPDATED: They have a salad, now! I was really looking forward to trying it, so my daughter and I swung by for lunch, today. We parked and flipped the order switch on the outside menu. After waiting quite awhile for service, a young man came out right as I started backing up to leave. He was very apologetic, and I figured hey...it happens. So I proceeded to order my salad. I customized it with grilled chicken, onion, and tomatoes. My daughter got the hot dog kids' meal with apple slices. Our order came to $13 and some change, which means my salad was nearly $9.00. As you can imagine, I was expecting a decent salad. Nope. Not even close. It was literally the size of a side salad--it came in a side salad container. And to boot, the Bibb lettuce (the only lettuce which comprised the salad) was in whole-leaf form. So when I got home, I had to chop my own $9.00 salad. "Not pleased" would be a vast understatement. To top it off, my daughter's hot dog looked like it came off the little machine at the gas station. It was dry and wrinkly, as if it had been sitting under the lights on a roller for hours. Yuck. At this point, I can't recommend this place to anyone, and I don't intend to return. I've taken my initial review all the way down to one star. I have had some unpleasant experiences at The Mug since I wrote my first review (for instance, the cheese on my Aunt Patti's Grilled Cheeser wasn't melted during one visit, and my BLT had burned bacon during another visit), but enough is enough. I also can't help but notice The Mug hasn't been nearly as busy as it used to be, and I'm hearing some negative stuff about its Irvington location. I really hope they can fix these quality and service issues. I would hate to see such a promising place shuttered, as the result of its own undoing. read more

What a great little drive-in style restaurant. We ate on their patio. Selections were standard fare of burgers, dogs and chicken, but they get all their meat from a local farm. Really good stuff. I had the largest pork tenderloin I have ever seen. I could have used 4 more buns and served a family!! Taste was awesome as well as the fresh cut fries. My wife had the cheeseburger and onion rings. The only knock I would give is that the rings weren't double breaded, so the breading fell off too easily and there was a lot extra grease at the bottom of the container. Good taste though. We stopped in after reading an article about them in the newspaper. I got the jalapeño bacon cheeseburger and my wife got the Cuban. We split the sweet potato waffle fries. The burger was cooked perfectly and was very juicy and flavorful. The Cuban was done pretty well too. My only complaint with the Cuban is a real Cuban doesn't have barbecue sauce. If you are willing to deal with a 50/50 chance of horrible customer service for great food this is your place. The food is the only reason I gave it two stars. We watched for over an hour as the two tables before us got their food (makes sense) and the three behind our order got theirs. Once we requested a status for our order we were told a few more minutes and the manager would bring it out. They sent some poor kid who just clocked in. Even though the Mug is renown for the pork loin sandwich, I went with the Chicago Dog, grilled cheeser, and the garlic fries. The Chicago dog was perfectly grilled. Snappy casing, sweet relish, sports peppers, fresh tomatoes... so good. The only thing that was missing but I can't fault the Mug, no poppy seed bun. But the one I got was perfectly toasted, so it made up for it! The grilled cheeser was nicely toasted grilled cheese. Look, if someplace messes up a grilled cheese, you shouldn't eat there. Just saying... Finally, the creme of the creme... Garlic Fries. The Mug offers them 2 ways, fresh cut (they say like 5 Guys but compared to the Mug, 5 guys is garbage), and your regular breaded fries. I went with breaded and it was the best garlic fries I've ever had. Fresh garlic, I mean seriously fresh. Kaylee offered me some of the homemade sauce wit the fries... hands down, don't even know how these fries got better but they did... wow just wow. If I could give 10 stars I would. Love this place! We love having it right next door. Prices are good. Food is great! I will say when it's really busy you will most likely wait a while for your food. This place is so fun. The food is great. The ice cream is the best around. If you go, try the "graham central station" ice cream flavor. They have games you can play while you wait.
