HIGHLY RECOMMEND--Call Sit Means Sit South Austin today! Our 2.5 year old, Stella, is a really great dog but about as stubborn as they come with her Great Dane/Great Pyrenees DNA--the Pyr in her makes her believe she always knows best! We looked for a long time since we adopted her to find training that would be a good fit for her, and our family, and we found what we were looking for at Sit Means Sit. Our only regret is that we didn't find them sooner! We opted for the full package with Stella--six full day camps where the amazing trainers worked with her to introduce the e-collar to prompt good behavior and response to commands followed by a one-hour session with us, her humans, to be taught how to reinforce what she learned during day camp. Sit Means Sit is really great about sending homework each week with videos we could reference to help us hone newly learned skills. Now that we've completed the first six weeks, we are now on to group sessions (30 of them ahead!) along with two one-hour private lessons we can sprinkle throughout to work more deeply on skills and to address anything we need to work on that we discover during our group sessions. Sit Means Sit owners and trainers (Francisco, Colby and Christian) were amazing from the start--they are smart, they have helped us learn why our dog does what she does and how to fix it, they know how to encourage dogs with kindness and tons of praise but stand firm with what is expected, and displayed so much patience with Stella and her humans. It was clear from day one they cared about helping her move from a really good dog to a really awesome one! Scheduling was easy and the Sit Means Sit team sends reminders through text messages and emails to keep us on track with classes. We have seen a ton of progress, but still have a lot to learn and practice. How has our life changed in six short weeks, you might ask? With the use of the e-collar and commands we can: get her attention/eye contact, keep her from running through door boundaries, actually take her for a walk, redirect her when she barks inside and outside our home, send her to place when we have guests to our home and get her to come when called (most of the time...still practicing this one a lot!). We are so incredibly grateful for the Sit Means Sit training, tools and staff...what they teach really works!

This place has changed our lives in the best way possible. I came here needing help with: leash/ dog reactivity, anxiety, high energy, socialization & obedience training that would stick for my rescue dog- a Belgian Malinois mix. We learn something new at each lesson. I feel like we've received way more than what we expected with the plan we chose. The organized systems and amazing staff... are priceless!!

Moving to Austin made my six-year-old terrier mix "Terry" very stressed and this led to reactivity towards other dogs and leash pulling increasing. Austin is such a huge dog friendly city, so I wanted to make sure my rescue pup got the training he needed to live his best life in this new city. I saw recommendations on Yelp! For Sit Means Sit, so I decided to give them a chance since they have multiple locations. A free consultation is where you begin (via Google Meet) and a well-informed trainer explains Sit Means Sit process and recommends the best program for your dog's needs. I went with the three private lessons and 3 group classes because that was the most affordable for me at the time. I love how they have a payment plan as well to help anyone who needs it! They are very busy and taking COVID-19 precautions seriously, so limited people/dogs are allowed in the facility at a time. Scheduling is done over the phone and our first lesson went great! At first, I was hesitant about the Sit Means Sit collar like anyone would be, but after the trainers explain it and show you how to effectively use it... I could not recommend it more for dog's like my Terry who are reactive and need a little help refocusing. The only thing I wish was different with our training was having one consistent trainer for all three of our private lessons. Each time we had a new trainer, so Terry had to adapt to them. Even though we had different trainers, they were all great and they have notes about your dog so they come into the session knowing what they are dealing with. We start our group classes soon and we are excited!! The best advice I can give anyone considering Sit Means Sit (or any dog training) is that YOU as an owner need to put in the EFFORT and TIME with your dog. The trainers give you all the helpful tips/tools, but the success only happens with repetition at home and exposing your dog to new situations as frequently as you can. If you're looking for someone to do all the work for you I might look for a more personalized training program.

Ask the Community - Sit Means Sit South Austin

How would you describe your training approach? Is this positive reinforcement only?

Overall it depends on the dog and the owner's goals for the pup. We cater to dogs of any age, breed, temperament, and any areas of concern the owner has, and inherently training is not a one-size-fits-all type of thing.…

It's much more wide ranging than training that's only focused on commands like sit/stay/down/etc (though you can work on all of those with the Naked Dog's programs too). Before we signed up for the group training series, I was at my wit's end with our recently adopted dog. He had a lot of behavioral issues, ranging from chewing things in the house, overall excitability, constant attempts to eat pecans and, worse, trash on walks (and often succeeding despite our best efforts & requiring steady doses of probiotics and even a vet visit to induce vomiting), and lunging on leash at dogs and passing vehicles. We also noticed that when we took him to the dog park, he'd play really rambunctiously and generally go 0-60, including running and body checking other dogs (not the best strategy for harmonious playing). The great part about this series is that it's three in-person sessions (we added a fourth for some additional coaching) and the rest is a series of online lessons. This made it easy for us to work through at our own pace. In the online portion, the end of every lesson included video homework that we'd send in and get feedback from one of the Naked Dog trainers -- this was great because it captured us applying these skills in a total real world setting, without the presence of a trainer to coach us or influence our dog to be on his best behavior. Fast forward a couple months, and now we feel confident that we can handle any situation with our dog, including taking him to busy and distracting environments and responding to misbehavior. He's mellowed out so much -- he isn't perfect, but it feels like we've reached an understanding. He went from my problem child to my sidekick. He can walk in a heel, he comes when called, and will wait at the door before we say he can come in. It feels like he's looking to us as leaders and that he's truly settled in as part of our family. We followed the Naked Dog's recommendations for introducing dogs for the first time when we took him over to a friend's house to meet their dogs, and they remarked on what a good dog he is, and that he's better behaved than other dogs they've petsitted, so now we have a worry-free petsitting option. I also now take him by our neighborhood park on walks and let him meet other dogs, which used to be a wild activity full of leash pulling and jumping. The Naked Dog taught us what to look for in reading dogs' behavior so that we can spot polite vs rude behavior and manage their interactions before they start getting too wild, which is a truly priceless part of this training seminar.

Transformative Online Training, Truly Beyond Words!…read more We are so grateful for Allegra and her incredible online training program. We took in two stray dogs who were wild, anxious, and completely untrusting. We weren't sure where to begin and it was chaotic for us, until we found her. Through her online courses and virtual sessions, she helped guide us step by step with patience, wisdom, and a technique that honestly goes beyond words. Even though we never met in person, her presence and deep understanding of animal behavior came through in every interaction. With her support, our dogs have started to trust us, calm down, and settle into their new life. The change has been remarkable. It feels like a miracle to see them open up and begin to feel safe and loved. If you're dealing with fearful or reactive dogs, do not hesitate to work with Allegra. Her approach is compassionate, intuitive, and truly life-changing. Thank you, Allegra, so much!!

The owner does need to be diligent with taking their dog to the trainings (we kind of fell off at the end but it was okay) but as long as you stick with it, your dog will learn new skills and will be better behaved than before. We can literally walk our dog without a leash now, I never thought that would be possible. She will sit in her place when people come over and we are always getting compliments on how good she is. We can do things in the front yard and have her stay in the garage and she won't run after other dogs that walk by or other other people or children. She has learned to stay in her place for as long as we need her to be. It's funny because she was a really wild dog before and now that she's trained everybody loves her. overall the training here was worth it and we are really happy that we did it!

Fortunatley he healed well after two weeks of dedicated TLC but the trauma of the experience remained with both him and me well after Ryder physically healed. I reached out to Matt for virtual dog training appointments to help us through that, and his guidance and great wisdom around dog psychology and behavior and deep empathy for Ryder and in general made such a huge impact. I learned from Matt how to help Ryder through his fear and trauma and how to recognize when he was experiencing trauma (for example, he developed a new and strong fear of rumbling engines). By applying Matt's empathetic practices, Ryder has become much less fearful, is no longer afraid of rumbling engines or playing with other dogs and he's back to his old happy, playful, super enthusiastic and friendly self!! :) Matt also greatly helped my dog Ellie through the excessive anxiety that resulted from my marital separation and helped us learn what an impact the breaking of that social bond had on her and how to address it! We did get one update after a week but it was simply a few pics below, a 3 second video of her on a leash, and a generic text which referred to our dog as " they." We created an account on their portal which has different tabs including a report card, pics and video updates, etc. Ours was never updated; no pics, no report card, no nothing. The most disappointing was what we received for the $2500. From the first discussion, then reiterated again at the meet and greet, and yet again when we dropped her off, was our main concern potty training. They asked us to fill out in writing what concerns we had when we dropped her off. We noted potty training, again, along with nipping, jumping, leash tugging, stay and a request to teach her to shake/roll over. We also expressed our concern with our puppy interacting with other dogs. 3 weeks prior she was viciously attacked by another dog and thankfully an emergency vet saved her. Since the attack was on her throat, she ended up with a hoarse raspy sound when she breathes heavily. We left our puppy and made an appt to come back in 2 weeks, at 1:00, for our owner training session with Matthew. We arrived on time and thought it was odd that Matthew left for lunch shortly after we arrived. Samantha was very nice and spent time going through what our puppy was taught; ie walking on a leash and sitting in PLACE - which was exciting. Matthew came back from lunch and stopped in to say hello. They thanked us and said we were finished. I then asked how the potty training went? They said they don't offer potty training and the owner of the company does not let them potty train. We explained the other trainer we used years ago with our other dog taught him to ring a bell when he had to go out - which worked perfectly. Matthew jokingly replied that doesn't work because the dog then rings the bell all the time just to go outside to play. Well it worked for us. As we were leaving I asked if they could show us what fun tricks our puppy now knows. He looked perplexed and said "tricks? What do you mean by tricks?" I said like shake or rollover? He then said they don't teach tricks and this is so easy to do myself. Wow.... Samantha asked if our dog had an allergy problem because her breathing was hoarse sounding. I guess no one remembered me telling them about the dog attack which makes me wonder if they did in fact train her around other dogs. They told us they would do this but never mentioned this at our final meeting. They told us to continue using the shock collar for jumping, biting, barking, etc. I had expected these concerns to have been trained over the 2 weeks. In conclusion, if they don't include potty training, our main reason for paying $2500 for the training, they should have told us that at one of the 4+ times we brought it up. And if the "tricks" were so easy to teach why didn't they do this since this was on my initial concern list they asked me to provide? Proper expectations were not set, utilization of their program portal sections were not used and no follow-up so far. There is no way I can honestly give them a 5 STAR rating on Google - even though they would give me a free 2 night boarding stay if I did.
