I ordered a grooms cake from the Night Kitchen Bakery as a surprise for my now husband at our rehearsal dinner. Not only did they accommodate my very last minute order, but the cake itself looked and tasted amazing! The cake was a coors original case with a life size beer can sitting next to it. It looked incredible! When the cake was brought out my guests initially thought it was an actual case of beer. They totally lost their minds when they realized it was a cake. The look on my husbands face was priceless, and for a guy who normally isn't a big cake eater, he was completely thrilled by the whole thing. The experience of placing the order for the cake was easy and stress free, and the owner was very friendly and helpful throughout the entire process. Can I mention again how crazy delicious it tasted? We opted for half vanilla with a lemon curd filling and half chocolate with a mocha chocolate filling. Extremely over priced, horrible service, stale food. I live around the corner and try to support local business, but this place is just BAD. I've had hair in their premade sandwiches, and their pastries are so stale and bland. I used to go in there for la Colombe at least, because they can't screw that up, but then they got politically during the DNC, and I even tried to give them another chance again, but it's just always a disappointment. The Night Kitchen is my go-to for spectacular cakes for any occasion--the mocha mousse is out of this world--and for special occasions, they can do any theme cake you choose. For nearly fifteen years, I have stopped in for a great box of cookies--or, more recently, lunch. I love their Gorgonzola walnut biscotti scones--and their take -away (or eat-in) salads, sandwiches, soups and fresh fruit items. The quality and decor are top notch. I love seeing the smiles that emerge when I bring a Night Kitchen mocha mousse cake--and know it never disappoints. (Note--I love the mocha mousse cake best about 45 minutes to an hour after being set out--the icing is still dense; some prefer a little more time, as they like a softer consistency--**and keep the outside temperature in mind.) read more

I love this bakery! The lemon curd cake is absolutely fantastic! The prices are reasonable and the quality is consistently amazing. The only recommendation I'd make is that the bakery cafe is not set up great. They seem to have a refrigerated self serve area that really clogs traffic where the cash register is... The customer service SUCKS! The employees treat the customers like we desperately need them. They have stupid rules and enforce them at all cost. I was in a crazy hurry, called them for a B-Day Cake. I even offered them my credit card for payment to expedite the transaction. Their "rules" state that they can't take same day orders. I was 20 minutes away and needed them to simply take my payment & write a message on a cake. "No Bueno, No can do!" The cakes are not consistent either. Sometimes they taste more than a day old. While the taste of the baked goods from The Night Kitchen is generally very good, we had a lousy experience with them recently. We ordered a cake for my daughter's birthday and it was a disappointment. It was tasty, but sloppily decorated (crudely cut out shapes with details scribbled in marker). The cake was decorated like the book The Hungry Caterpillar, but had carrots, grapes and other random foods on it that are not part of the book. You'd think you'd at least know what to put on the cake! It was also quite small for the number of people it was supposed to serve. The staff also gave us a hard time about adding a single vanilla cupcake to the order a few days before the event. The cake was overpriced for the appearance and the staff wasn't polite. read more

Brought a cake for my mothers surprise party , vanilla on top chocolate at the bottom. Chocolate was excellent ,vanilla was dry and horrible. Get your birthday cake elsewhere. After deciding to order one from here, we were super disappointed. For me, the icing is a huge part of the cake, and it greatly disappointed. It was not sweet at all and had a texture like marzipan. After going back to see if this was normal, as it tasted so off, the girls behind the counter were extremely rude. I love this bakery and cafe. The environment is homey and warm. There is a nice variety of fresh soups which I love in the winter. And then there are the treats. How does one pick a favorite? Usually I return to something chocolate, but have strayed for the plum tart and pear tart. If you haven't been to the Night Kitchen, stop by for a fine time. read more

UNPROFESSIONAL! I called there to ask them to hold a bakery item. I was told that "it was not their policy " to do so. I don't live near by, I have been a customer for over 30 years. I disagreed with the woman on the phone. The next thing I know, the owner, AMY, is calling me, telling me that I made her pastry chef cry.... really? I simply disagreed with the policy, told the person on the other end of the line (who happened to be the pastry chef) and then get a phone call from the owner, reprimanding me! VERY professional... MAYBE if your pastry chef is crying because I disagreed with your ridiculous rule, she's got BIGGER issues! Then to call me? I will NEVER shop here again. The staff are snooty & have BIG attitude problems. I can buy pastries in a thousand other bakeries in Philadelphia where they WILL hold items (since I am driving a distance) and NOT give me an attitude. I could NOT believe that the owner of NIGHT KITCHEN , AMY, had the gall to call me & try to scold me for "making her pastry chef cry." Get a life Amy! You are VERY unprofessional & have a VERY RUDE staff to go along with your lack of people skills. Obviously, your pastry chef forgot to take her medication that day if that's all it takes for her to cry. People have the right to their own opinions and to voice them.... Grow thicker skin, Night Kitchen pastry chef. This wasn't a blood transfusion, it was a pastry. Think twice before you call a customer & reprimand them for something you have no knowledge of. Looking for a very rich treat? Three times over the past month I have needed a large round cake with a message on the top for a special event. I chose the lemon curd cake, the chocolate raspberry cake and the chocolate butter cream cake. All were delicious and a great success with groups of 8-9 and with some left for the celebrated to take home. This past weekend I bought iced brownies as a treat for desert - gorgeous richly chocolate with cream below the icing. Night kitchen has long been our go-to spot for special treats and coffee. It's pleasant and bright and friendly. They even have GF options and great lunch options. My favorites are the almond macaroons, the walnut bars, and their famous lemon curd cake. My family ordered this cake for me for my birthday, letting them know I don't really like frosting. The cake was beautiful, with extra lemon curd and accents, and hands down the most delicious cake I've ever tasted. For my daughter's 8th birthday, she wanted "a chocolate or vanilla monster high cake". NK made a later of chocolate mousse, a layer of vanilla and an adorable (I didn't even know that was possible) fondant Clawdeen Wolf. The cake was a huge hit and my daughter was thrilled! So were the guests, of course. The bakers and decorators are extremely talented, service is always friendly and attentive, and quality is top-notch. What's not to love? read more

Night Kitchen just did the Schuylkill Center's 50th anniversary celebration cake, which we unveiled at our picnic for 120 friends. The cake featured four happy people walking along a nature trail with birds and trees and raccoons and frogs... It was amazingly beautiful, and unbelievably tasty on top of that. We happened to stumble upon this super quaint bakery when we were heading up to Chestnut Hill. I had always heard good things about The Night Kitchen but I've never had the opportunity to stop in. Well, I'm really glad we stopped! I didn't realize that it was not just a bakery but a sit down cafe as well. We tried several items but what really stood out was the key lime pudding (yes, pudding!). It was sweet, but tart and had a nice meringue topping. The lemon squares were also so delicious! Just the right touch of tartness. We teamed our treats with coffee, which was delicious and so inexpensive compared to other coffee places. Before we left, we ordered a carrot cake to take home. I cannot even describe how delicious this was! Moist and rich with the most amazing frosting. I will dream about this cake until the next time I can stop at The Night Kitchen and get another one. All in all, I loved everything we had and will definitely return. Maybe next time I'll come for brunch or lunch so I can try more of their food. You should definitely go. SO I purchased my Daughter's sweet sixteen cake from here, and I have my likes and dislikes on this bakery. The cake was alil highly priced, but it was beautiful !!!It was a two layer cake with fondant. The bottom layer was yellow cake with chocolate chip and butter cream, I amongst all my guest at my daughters party were very upset with it, it was very dry. Now the second layer I did cut and taste, and that was chocolate with butter cream, now that layer was delicious, but no one wanted to taste that layer after their disappointment with the bottom layer!!! Their not consistent with their batters, I just feel for the price of the cake it should of melted in my mouth and I was dissatisfied with it eating and tasting wise, but for appearance they did a GREAT JOB !! I probably won't be buying another cake form here, because I would worry if it is gone to taste good !!! As for my Daughter she loved the appearance but wouldn't even eat the cake after having tasted the first piece , I wound up trashing it !!! read more
