AMAZING hotel in the heart of downtown Carmel (Carmel-by-the-Sea), and just a 5-minute walk to the beach. Located right on Ocean Ave, the main road in downtown Carmel. It is an older, vintage building so it doesn't have the "modern" feel, but the rooms are clean and ƒront desk service is excellent. Pro: the one good thing about this place was the water pressure and the effective water heater. The water got hot in seconds and the water pressure was super strong, but with all the signs about conserving water in the Central coast, you almost feel guilty about taking a hot shower with strong water pressure. Cons: Poor insulation (we had to bundle up and were still freezing) Heater that was loud but ineffective. No parking lot (I think it would have been fine on a week day or a less busy weekend but street parking was not very plentiful on a holiday weekend). Super thin walls (can hear every single word of the guests staying in the room next door). Sheets and pillowcases smelled like bleach. It's nice to know that they were disinfected, but the smell was overpowering. I can't comment on the free breakfast because I completely forgot it was offered. The inn itself sounds so quaint and nice in reviews but somehow I didn't see the ones that said how noisy it was. It was also freezing when we were there but we might have gotten a room with a broken heater. I am guessing they don't really get a lot of happy, return customers because when I was checking out, they didn't say the usual "How was your stay? We hope to see you again soon." I'm writing this review to confirm the findings of the others below who have mentioned that the inn could not be more quaint and in a more perfect setting. From the outside it is a quintessentially French countryside Inn. However this feels more like a motel or motor inn with the inner parking lot right up against some rooms. A car is parked 4 feet from our door. Additionally the reviews saying the walls are paper thin are true. As I am writing this I am listening to our neighbors discuss where to go to get coffee. I had to wear earplugs just to sleep. If you come here without earplugs you better be a deep sleeper since your neighbors will dictate when you will sleep. Unfortunate I would stay away from this place- not much you can do about paper thin walls aside from big demo. read more

We took the most basic room, and it was darling and roomy: the furnishing were new, the floors tiled (no icky carpeting), and it was squeaky clean. FYI-no in-room fridge. Afternoon sherry is offered in the cozy reception area, which was hard to pass up on a drizzly day. They serve a generous continental breakfast in the breezy breakfast room, giving it a sweet B & B feel. I remember bagels, cereal, fresh fruit, hot coffee, orange juice and stack of morning papers. We strolled into the breakie room one morning after a beach run, which seemed to irk our fellow buffed and well-heeled travelers. Oh well, we're not all visiting Carmel for the art galleries. Besides all this good stuff, one of the best things about this hotel is its location...just 3 blocks to the beach. I would definitely return. read more

Lovely bed and breakfast, the exteriors and interiors are so beautiful. Has a quaint European charm to it. They have free coffee, tea, hot cocoa by the reception saloon to welcome travellers after a long drive. We got upgraded to a cottage from the 2 rooms we originally paid for at the same price since it was not a busy weekend and we needed to all be together since we were with the kids. Maison Collette our cottage had 3 rooms, with a lovely kitchen and small dining room and living room. We had a great open deck that led into a lovely courtyard. The place was so clean, the beds and the sheets were heavenly. Great bathrooms. The free breakfast was so yummy. Cereal, bread selection, jams, hard boiled egg, fruits, juices, coffee, hot cocoa which is served in a cute breakfast room. Everyone was nice and helpful. This place is the best in Carmel. Our 3rd time here and it never disappoints. Also well kept considering its age, that's the rustic charm about it. The flowers in front are beautiful. So worth it. read more

I have stayed at the Normandy Inn before and always had a good stay overall. Be warned that that it is an older place and because the insulation and walls are thin it is better to be on the top floor. My recent stay was a prominent reminder of this. Though we were on the top floor, our next door neighbor was violently ill ALL night long. We heard this routine the entire night: A quick charge to the bathroom (stomping all the way); Loud shrieks while being sick (I thought he was being assaulted at one point because of his screams); Toilet flush; Stomping back to bed. At one point someone knock on the door to check on him (we heard all of this too). There were occasional belches, conversations and TV noise as well. The room itself was clean and nice, if not a little dated in the bathroom. They offer a breakfast but we did not take advantage of it. Absent the recent experience, this place is okay. Good location in Carmel right on Ocean, clean and friendly. Just bring some good earplugs. read more

My friends were getting married in Carmel and one of the places they recommended that the guests stay was the Normandy Inn. Seriously a cute hotel with "cottages" detached from the main hotel as well. Built in 1921, you can totally tell that the hotel is a little dated with a few upgrades needed The good: 1) Free deluxe continental breakfast from 7:30 AM - 10:30 AM daily. The breakfast is actually pretty decent with it's own little breakfast lounge separate from the hotel. The breakfast included such goodies such as toast, English muffin, fruit (Bananas and apples), instant oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, cereal, coffee, tea and OJ. 2) Parking is decent, you can find street parking if you're lucky but we did not have a problem at all 3) The housekeeping staff were excellent and they were friendly 4) Reception staff were nice and personable, had a ton of recommendations for breakfast, lunch and dinner 5) A five minute walk to the ocean, tons of places to run (I ran everyday while we were on vacation and there are plenty of places to run around for scenic views) The bad: 1) Noise level is pretty high, you can hear a lot of street noise including sirens and traffic 2) The walls are thin, we were in the room downstairs and could hear the people upstairs. We heard everything and when people were walking around upstairs, it sounded like an elephant going from one side of the room to the other 3) Outdated rooms. Tile floors, furniture and décor seemed a bit from the 1990s. The sheets need to be upgraded as well. Overall, a cute little spot but nothing to really write home about. In so many aspects of life, it's beneficial to go into something with the right level of expectation. Often this accurate level setting is the result of some valuable intelligence, which I received from an extremely helpful woman at the Carmel Area Reservation Service (more on them to follow!). The vital intel was this: the people at the front desk of the Normandy Inn are a little odd. But I was told "they check you in and check you out". So knowing this, I went into this weekend getaway expecting that my wife and I would likely not receive world class memorable service. Many of the negative reviews were attributed to the front desk so again, this expectation going in can't be overstated. Onto the rest of the review! The property is surrounded by gorgeous flowers and bright hanging plants. Upon opening our upstairs room, the first scent I got was new paint, but not too strong. So it was a sign that they had recently renovated these rooms and the results were terrific. Nice furniture, really nice white window shutters and a comfortable bed. We were also fortunate enough to have some nice views. Continental breakfast was included, but I recommend getting your coffee at one of the houses just up Ocean if you're like me and need a "real" morning fix. Complimentary sherry in the afternoons (Carmel is the only place I ever drink sherry as a couple of these inns offer this, and I rarely pass on free booze). The location of the Normandy Inn at the bottom of Ocean Ave's commercial stretch was also key to our weekend and we planned a Saturday picnic at the beach. So a short few block's walk to lovely Carmel beach was nice, as opposed to having to strut through all of downtown Carmel with a beach chair on my back!. Finally, those reviews about the thin walls are accurate. Funny enough we did have a screamer nearby on Saturday night but you know what? It's not the worst thing to listen to as long as it doesn't go on TOO long...right? As I mention above, I recommend using the Carmel Area Reservation Service if you're booking a B&B in Carmel. I wanted to love this place so much. The location is perfect and it is extremely photogenic. But in reality?... I wish we'd stayed somewhere else. The staff was really nice and I think they would have taken care of any specific issues we had. But the problem was there was no particular issue. It was just a bit outdated. We stayed in a downstairs room and could hear people talking above us late into the night. The breakfast was your standard Days Inn/Best Western-style. There are so many lodging options in Carmel and we'd feel no need to return to this one. read more

This hotel is very cute and in a great location, however, the parking situation is not ideal as there is not dedicated parking for Normandy Inn guests. We had a deluxe fireplace room and we could hear EVERYTHING going on above us. We could hear people walking around at night and early hours in the morning and if we weren't already awake from that, housekeeping knocked on our door at 9:00am. All in all, I would not stay here again. One more item not related to hotel is you need to make reservations to eat at local restaurants. I'd you don't, you'll end up having to drive to Monterey/Pacific Grove for dinner. read more

I should have paid better attention to the negative reviews on this one. Every single one mentioned how thin the walls are and it's no joke. We could hear every single word and footstep in the adjacent rooms. It's impossible to get any sleep here, given how noisy this place is. Since that's the whole point of a hotel, I can't give this place any better marks. What's more, there is no dedicated parking (you have to find street parking, which is VERY limited on weekends). Also, the room and bathroom are pretty small given how expensive it is. Definitely won't be staying here again. read more

I'm sad to have to write this negative review, but feel it's necessary. The room had such terrible sound-insulation that I awoke at 4:00am startled by the noise of a third person snoring like a train in our room. It was so loud that I wanted to punch the wall. The phone was not near and I did not want to upset the person i was staying with, so most of the night I was awake. When I told the front desk the next morning they smiled, and said we were told at check-in that if there were any concerns, to call them, and therefore it was not their problem since I did not call. When I said they should insulate their rooms better, they repeated themselves and took no responsibility for the hotel conditions. I forgot to mention that the showerhead fell off. read more

Excellent prices and clean rooms. I've stayed here twice now and have enjoyed myself each time. I've never had a problem waking up due to a neighbor's or street noise but I could see how that may have happened as the building is on the older side. However, most bed and breakfasts in this area must have the same problem. They have a separate area for their continental breakfast, the staff is super friendly and the location is perfect. Stayed here on 09/19/19-09/21/19. Was very pleased. Booked through booking.com. From the outside this inn appears to be quite old, but rooms are modern and comfortable. I would give zero if possible on service from Cecile one of the mangers at this hotel I once liked. I traveled 10 hours and called to let her know I would be checking in with me and some family I insisted to stay there and she said there would be no electricity??? I had no notification and they knew a few days before. I arrived in hope something had changed and the front desk guy was also rude and offered no apology, no discount and also the manger went out of her way to leave a note to not give any upgrades???? Talk about the worst hospitality ever no electricity all night. At 8pm had to go look for a another place. read more

I can't even begin to tell you what an awesome experience I had last weekend in Carmel staying at The Normandy Inn. It started way before the day of my getaway. David who booked my reservation was extremely kind and helpful. My father who was recently diagnosed with cancer lives with me and all though he is so warrior spirit enough to care for himself, I just wanted to take myself away for Valentine's weekend and enjoy some peace and quiet literally next to the ocean! David made sure to make that happen. Once I got there I had the pleasure of meeting Sherita(?) and Tina at the front desk... also VERY kind and helpful! I'd like to mention before I drove out there in called to find out what the weather was looking like in case of heavy rain, and Cecile not only took the time to look into the forecast, but also provided me with details regarding cancellations. They really took great care of me! I will mention that for some reason that night there was a group of kids who played "doorbell ditch", because kids will be kids and they were not guests, and once I contact Tina at the front office, she immediately contacted the local police. By the time they arrived the kiddos had scrambled. I mention this only to show how well the staff cares about their guests. The kids had nothing to do with the inn! Anyway, so many other great things about this place, parking, sitting area to read and/or eat, blocks from the ocean, etc. but check it out for yourself and I know you will enjoy your stay and really appreciate the staff! So disappointed with this place. The location is perfect, and the inn is super cute- but do not expect to sleep! My boyfriend and I came here for a relaxing weekend away from the city, but it was anything but. We didn't sleep a wink all night, to say the walls are paper thin would be an understatement. We could hear everything from our next door neighbors flushing their toilet to all the walking and talking the people above us were doing. Normandy Inn exudes the old world charm. It is in fact historic and designed like an old French country inn. The front entryway has a gorgeous flowery facade when multi colored flowers are in full bloom especially at this time of the year. The Inn appears cool and comfy under the foliage of the surrounding cypress trees thus creating a laid back atmosphere. This is also an ideal spot to enjoy the Carmel experience. The inn is centrally located between the scenic Carmel Beach and the eclectic and quaint shops, boutiques and art galleries. Ocean Avenue slopes gently downhill towards the ocean and provides a good hike to the ocean and back uphill to the shopping area. Who says Carmel by the Sea is only for the affluent? Check into one of NI's small cottages that are separated from the main building by Casanova Street. The rates for a cottage of course vary w/ the month and the season. Before the onset of summer, NI offers great affordable weekday rates.... $71 w/ AAA. The room is clean, bright and cheerful. The windows allow plenty of light in and the shutters can easily block the light off whenever needed. The room is tiny and the furnishings are bare bones. It has just enough room to fit a Queen although I must say the mattress is quite comfy, as my sensitive back didn't go out of whack the next morning. In typical European fashion, the bathroom is teeny-weeny and in fact I felt claustrophobic. The toilet is designed for someone w/a small tokus, the shower for someone under 6' or you may hit the ceiling. I am sized XL and I can imagine how much more uncomfortable it can be for someone bigger and taller than me! The cottage we were in had a semi private patio in a woodsy surrounding and was a good respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. Feel the ocean breeze and catch the sunrays peeping through the trees. Wifi however was spotty. It was supposedly available but worked only intermittently. Parking can be a challenge, especially when the inn is sold out, as there seems to be more cars than parking lots available. Since we came here primarily to relax, we slept in both mornings and missed the continental breakfast offered in the front lobby. I hear we didn't miss much...just the basic coffee, cereal, bagels, muffins etc. An overall enjoyable and relaxing stay, NI offered a good bang for your buck. We have been long times guests of NI and we are sad to notice this time their resident cat is gone after being one of their longest staff for over 20 years! read more

My room is tiny and the wall and ceiling are paper thin. You can hear your neighbor above walking around very loud, day and night. On a very busy Saturday night in August, we lucked out finding a room at the Normandy Inn. The location is perfect, parking lot included and staff are friendly. Most importantly, I had the best night's rest I've had in weeks. The room (323) was quiet, cozy and the bed was a perfect mix of hard and squishy. Normandy Inn is in a great location, and is a quaint little hotel. The fireplace room with queen bed was spacious and a little quirky, but comfortable. The non-holiday price was reasonable for Carmel. The complimentary breakfast was satisfying, although I suggest adding a waffle maker. The fireplace is nice, but the fan in the bathroom sucked in the smell since there is no flue to close. The parking lot is small, and the parking spaces even smaller. If you have a large vehicle or a nice car there are some decent spaces on the street near the hotel so you can reduce the risk of door dings. read more

When all hotels in the area were booked or overpriced because of an event we were fortunate to find their last room... quaint & charming it was clean & lovely ... walking distance to the beach & restaurants, what else do you need? Reasonably priced most seasons. It is not pet friendly... but if you have allergies or sensitivity to pet dander this is ideal for you. I stayed here recently with my wife and son. We booked last minute, but they had availability and took our reservation. They were very accommodating and friendly. It's difficult to judge a place online when the reviews are skewed with such different experiences. We actually enjoyed our stay here. It's quaint. It is not opulent or glamorous, but it is clean, safe, and the location couldn't be better for the price. Our expectations were low, based on the Yelp descriptions, but we were pleasantly surprised! Being just two blocks from the beach, and at such a reasonable rate, it was a good find! The grounds and pool were well taken care of, neat, and clean. We walked to the beach every day, and were very pleased with the location. The continental breakfast in the morning is a nice touch, and the eating area was comfortable and inviting. My only two issues were with the very thin walls, and the lack of finish on the maintenance of the rooms. I was awoken in the middle of the night by amorous sounds emitting from the room below us, and glad my son was fast asleep. The workmanship of the maintenance brings down the overall appeal of the rooms. Sloppily patched walls, and poorly installed accessories in the bathrooms. These are easily remedied by simply training the maintenance crew to care about their work. I hate to see such a quaint place ding'd for such easily fixed issues. Decor is definitely not my style but none of it matters as much as comfort and location and this place had both. I do not kid, that this was one of the most comfy king beds ever! We had 1.5 bathrooms too which allows you each your space to get ready. Oh and the fireplace, let me tell you about the fireplace...i wish I could tell you more, i remember lighting it, after drinking and dancing the night away at a wedding, but that's about it it...did I mention I am a great wedding date? one star off for serving sherry? what is sherry? who drinks sherry? My boyfriend and I stayed at the Normandy Inn and were not impressed with the room, at all. Our room could even be considered dilapidated due to the fact that the bathroom door didn't fully close (and didn't lock), the toilet lid didn't stay up, there were numerous dents in the wall and some mildew in the shower. Overall, the antiquated room and bathroom features gave the place a dingy feel. The location for this hotel, however, is prime. Also, the included breakfast was nice. read more
