Very cozy and unpretentious vineyard, so different from the rest that are out there. No hidden or ridiculous fees, not asked if we had a reservation and made to feel awkward, we were welcomed with warm arms as if we were family. The grounds are simple and rustic, a bit worn in and old farm-like, but that is its appeal. The service could not have been warmer or friendlier. Sit outside and enjoy the flock of chickens coming up to you. And the wine was delicious as well! read more

We were having an afternoon in the North Fork, and decided to visit a winery before heading back towards home. My wife spotted this rustic looking facility, so I turned in and immediately got a good feeling about it. The owner greeted us and made us feel entirely welcome. We sat down and looked at the tasting choices and had a fairly easy time filling up our dance card with 5 selections. We had the place to ourselves at first, and spent time getting to know Perry, a woman whose family has owned the operation since 1974. She said most of the buildings date back from the mid 1859s. Entertainment was also provided by 20 chickens (17 hens and 3 roosters). The wines were wonderful and lovingly explained by Perry. We left with a red and a white, and a feeling that this had been a very special hour. read more

The vineyard is beautiful, peaceful, and well kept, with open views and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to unwind and enjoy your surroundings. It feels calm and welcoming without being crowded or overwhelming. The service was good throughout our visit. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful when it came to explaining the wines and guiding tastings. Everything felt organized and unhurried, which allowed us to really take our time and enjoy the experience. They were attentive when needed but also gave plenty of space, which added to the laid back vibe. The wine was pretty good overall. There was a nice variety available, and while not every wine stood out, several were enjoyable and well balanced. The quality matched the relaxed setting and made for a pleasant tasting. It is the kind of wine you can easily enjoy while sitting outside and taking in the scenery. Overall Old Field Vineyard offers good service, great ambience, and pretty good wine in a lovely setting. It may not be the most standout vineyard on the North Fork, but it is absolutely worth a visit if you are looking for a relaxing and enjoyable wine tasting experience. Pulled up in our Uber to a perfectly rustic outdoor bar with the friendliest staff. We ordered tastings, grabbed a seat and relaxed with the chickens. One of my favourites on the North Fork. There is no indoor seating, just a large beautiful property with plenty of picnic tables and adirondack chairs. There is a little pond as well as a large chicken coop - you can buy feed for a dollar for the chickens. You can brimg your own snacks as there is no food offered here. This is a cozy winery with a wonderful tasting room. We came here with a family on a cold January day. The chickens were hiding under the barn but we were warmed inside by their small stove. They have games to play and a nice ambiance. We loved that this vineyard has been family owned for 100+ years too! We'll definitely be back. read more

Old field. This place was clearly a family farm first with wine as an after thought. I hesitate to use the word "cozy" describe this location but there's no other way to really portray the ambiance. You're in a converted shed and that is no bigger than a shoe box. You'll find a warm wood burning stove in the middle of the room with a lazy sleeping puppy next to it. Pet the puppy. Their Chardonnay is barrel and steel fermented and tasted pretty crisp. Chard is the oh-so-popular white grape but theirs tasted... different. I couldn't put my finger on it but I bought and enjoyed a bottle of it later. I didn't like all of the wines but I enjoyed the small family atmosphere here. This isn't a big production winery, the family makes it sells it all themselves. I would have liked to wander out back if it was warmer. Guess I'll just have to return in the summer. read more

We visited this small, family run vineyard/winery on the first Saturday in October, when they were releasing their 2013 Commodore Perry Merlot. The tasting room is small and cozy, there are a few seats, but we stood and were served by the owner and her daughter. The format here is a bit different - tasting pours are 2 oz. If I recall correctly, most were $2, with the higher end wines going for $3. I like this system, as you control how much you drink, and you get enough of each wine to form a coherent opinion. First up was the refreshing Cackling Rose. A nice way to begin a tasting and a great wine for a summer afternoon. We tried both the Steel and Barrel fermented Chardonnay - the former all steel, the latter spends some time in a barrel and is a bit more buttery, perhaps. I found both toothsome but austere - not a lot of difference twixt the two to this palate. The Cabernet Franc is their signature wine. It was a bit more substantial than Finger Lakes Cabernet Francs, if you know those. And then my favorite, the Commodore Perry. So named because the family are descended from him, and his frigate is on the label, but his flag cannot be reproduced. Although this wine was said to benefit from a bit more time in the bottle, I noticed no unwelcome tannins. I thought the wine tasted very slightly of prune (a good thing), with a rich body. We took home bottles of the Rose, the Chardonnay, Cab Franc and the Merlot. Probably should have grabbed two of the Merlot, but it was limited production and I didn't want to be greedy. If you are so inclined, you can walk around the property, there are chickens, a duck pond, and easy access to check out the vines. A very pleasant experience overall. read more

Situated on one of the most pristine places on the whole of the North Fork, the Old Field Vineyards finds itself written into the very history of Long Island- even before the United States- back to the early 1600's. With the grapes being grown nearly down to the water, frost, I'm told, is rarely a problem. On a recent birthday trip out to the wine trail, we came on the advice of a friend and were not disappointed. The owner and her daughter were busy sharing stories and wine flights, while we warmed our bones next to the cast iron stove and took in the sights and joined in the conversation. Mid-May can be a tad on the cool side until the sun is high in the sky; but the giant trees just behind the tasting room are sure to keep things cool in the height of Summer. I sampled all of the reds and took a few home- a sure sign I liked them. I'm a huge fan of dry red table wine and particularly like the "Rooster Tail". It's simple and reminds me of growing up Italian and my years in Spain. Unpretentious and flavorful, it embodies what a red table wine should- Home, family, and friends. The owners had some stories of their own and we listened eagerly to a little of their story, their pets, a recent movie that was filmed there and also heard that they host special events, including weddings. Of course, we will certainly come back and enjoy more of what the Old Field Vinyards has to offer. read more

Quack I love a place that has wildlife roaming around and as soon as we pulled into the old Field Vineyards, we were greeted by some ducks waddling around the property... perfect. The place is essentially a working farm that also makes wine - so the door to the tasting room is not as clearly marked as you would think - but we found our way in to what reminded me of a small barn or large farm shed type building. There was a wood burning stove and an old hound laying 2 feet in front of it keeping warm. Very rustic. Toss in the local swan or goose or whatever that thing was that has staked out the back deck and you have yourself a nice day in the country. The wines are pretty good as well and the owner is proud of her wares - we gave the flights a shot and ended up with one of the bottles to go. I think the wines have a way to go but not as bad as some of the other places out there. Also note: there is no bathroom- there is a porta-potty and for a dude this is no big deal, but some of you ladies may not quite enjoy that - especially in the winter. Skip it and do yourself a favor! We knew from walking in and out initial conversation with the employee that we should have just continued through the entry and out the porch and back down the steps and back to the car! BUT WE DIDN'T! We felt like we were there, so we should try it out. The pours were skimpy and on top of that, as someone else noted-I dumped quite a few. I typically do not do that but the wine just was not good. The man pouring for us was interesting to say the least. One wine is called the Cacklin' Rose and he called it the Cracklin' Rose, HUH!? One of the guys in our group called him out on it because we thought maybe there was an error on the handout-nope! He confirmed that he said it wrong. We are happy we went because we didn't know how it was. But we now know that we never need to go back! This to me is a classic example of what you see so often in any wine region. Someone can buy a plot of land and throw up a winery because everyone driving through will likely stop to check it out. Though they may not get many repeat customers, there are enough newbies to the area that they will stay in business. If you decide to find out for yourself, here is some info for you. We really enjoyed our visit to this charming and rustic vineyard. The young lady pouring the wines was very welcoming and helpful. The atmosphere was pleasant, with a comfortable porch set against several giant beech and sycamore trees, along with a few chickens walking about. Their well-behaved and friendly dog added to the casual charm. The wines were a mixed bag. One was fairly weak, but we did take a liking to a nicely balanced red, and would have bought more than the one bottle had we not purchased several bottles at an earlier vineyard along the way. My wife and I rode bikes here. This place is very rustic. They only have Chardonnay and reds. Pinot noir is descent. Food options are basically chips in a bag or crackers in a bag. Not a lot of effort went in to it. Chairs are random plastic chairs. I love rustic but this place needs work Not sure I would go back. read more

My husband and I visited today for the first time (and definitely not the last). It was a wet and damp Mother's Day on the North Fork but they had the stove on making it nice and toasty inside. We were welcomed instantly and started with a tasting. While enjoying the different wines we were treated to a little history about the property. Loved knowing that it's a family business. We enjoyed a glass of Merlot each and bought 2 bottles to take home. Looking forward to visiting again. read more

Our first stop on our "wine tasting" drive. The Old Field Vineyards was established on 1974 and has 12 acres of land. The winery feels like being in a old barn... with ducks walking around, and chickens in the cages. The tasting takes place in a little 'hut' next to the chickens and with a spectacular views of the vineyards. The tasting area is small... so get cozy with those around you. There are a few tables on the grounds were you are allowed to bring food and have a picnic of your own. There was a group of friends who brought food, bought a bottle of wine and sat there and were having a good ol' time. There is a variety of tastings to be done, either white wine only, red wine only or a combination. The wine tasting costs us $8.00 per person for 5 types of wines. There is red wine jelly and pinot noir mustard (available for purchase) with crackers to enjoy while doing the tasting. I just wished we were able to walk a little bit more around the grounds while doing the tasting. They got great landscape, so they could move the wine tasting to another place where there is more room to move and tables to be able to enjoy the tasting a little better. Wine was good and we ended up buying a bottle of the Cabernet Franc" and the jelly... yum, yum!!!! Prices range from $11-40 per bottle. And my final comment: The Long Island Wineries need to learn from the California wineries when it comes to attracting and keeping the clientele. Wineries in California have joined forces and created "group memberships" for those who like to visit them frequently where they get free tastings, visits and admission to special events. In exchange, the member is required to buy a bottle a month or more... depending on the type of membership. This also allows the member to bring a guest for a free wine tasting and discount on purchases. California wineries do have other individual memberships that offer the member access to free wine tastings and events. The member is required to buy a case of wine a quarter... it is a win-win marketing scheme that could work for these wineries if they get together and create joint and individual membership plans. Finally, for those staying in hotels around the area, complimentary wine tasting cards should be given, hence bringing more tourism dollars into the state. read more

I had a lot of fun here with friends. We booked a 3PM tasting for 6 and were seated at a private table in the back which was totally cool. Our server was informative but also good fun and the owner stopped in to see how we were doing. As a smaller winery, they have some cool stories to share about what they go through to grow their grapes and turn them into wine. I think one of our bottles mentioned a particularly pesky raccoon that was thwarting their harvest one year. Rustic. We came in the winter. You walk along a little cinder path to the tasting room which isn't much more than two shacks slammed together. It's very cozy. There's a chess set on the shelves which always strikes a soft spot. The second room has a wood burning stove. people in the first room had a baby and small boy. he kept running around. he kept coming near the wood burning stove. All I could htink of was Agen Toht in Indiana Jones, his face melting away. I wanted to use my hackey sack moves to boot him away to safety. But, thankfully, he never burned. dad was pouring the tastes. Daughter came in shortly after with dog in tow. She was very considerate, asking everyone if they were OK with dogs. Even though there was a dog, this place does NOT allow other dogs which, is understandable. You don't want ot run the risk of some strange dog getting into a scrap with your own dog in her own joint. The wines were just "OK". Served in a one-size-fits-all glass, they weren't bad but rather were unremarkable. Overall the inside tasting areas are smallish. I'll bet this place shines more when it's nice and people can hang out outside and meander the grounds. We'll be back when things ger warmer. read more

i chose 2 stars because I HAVE EXPERIENCED BETTER. In fact, I have had a better experience at virtually every other winery on North Fork. The Old Field owner was cool and aloof. Wine was fine--not great. That said, the location is majestic. It is unfortunate that customers are prohibited from taking a stroll to the waterfront. We were advised that it was "private property" and it is only available to customers during summer "Movie Thursdays". We were told that Movie events are not advertised because they do not welcome crowds. Thanks anyway. We'd rather give business to the Multiplex. read more

This is a mother daughter winery - daughter grows the grape - mom helps. Mom makes the wine - daughter helps. And the only winery left w/ a beach front property home out there, but you can't see it or the water because it's closed to the public. Don't expect anything fancy. This is a farm. With chickens walking around, etc. So if you're scared of chickens, this is not for you. Too bad they don't sell the eggs though. The staff was nice to us but we were on a tour. They wine is pretty ok, like a lot of LI wine. It's not Napa after all. It wasn't terrible, just not so good that you want to buy a bottle. The grounds are nice so you can sit and relax, picnic, let the kids run around, etc. as long as you don't go past the private property signs. Basically you can't walk the vineyards here. The wine tasting area is small and sometimes very crowded patio space. You can rent the space to get married but I heard it's quite $$$. NO bathrooms - just porto potties which I kind of feel like is a little outrageous considering you're charging people money to drink which may cause them to need to use the bathroom. I get it's a farm and all, but maybe they should upgrade a little to accommodate people who come a little dressed up to visit wineries and pay good money to do so, no? read more

Our first time at 'The Old Field Vineyard' It is a delightful, quant and an old school vineyard, not a millionaire funded winery. Our guide, Joann was so engaging, sweet, friendly and informative who has a wonderful relationship with Perry and her family at this vineyard. It was great visiting a small boutique, family owned and worked style vineyard. It was more personable and friendly, we had so much fun walking around the property enjoying the views of the Long Island Sound and tasting their delicious wines including a personal tour by Perry, the daughter who was welcoming, friendly and down to earth and talked to us about her life, including her family and how they have worked so hard and with such love and passion being a family of vintners in such an extraordinary place in New York State to continue their lifestyle as vintners. I personally found the tour to be so informative and educating about their daily lives and what it takes to run and work a vineyard. I would definitely recommend visiting here to experience a family owned and more personable style winery. read more

The wines are great and reasonably priced- I especially like the mostly steel Chardonnay (and that's coming from an oaky Chard lover) and the Commodore Perry. The server was helpful, personable, and let me add the oaky chardonnay to the set tasting. The grounds are beautiful and I could see myself spending a fair amount of time just cozied up to the wood stove with a glass of wine and some cheese. The Old Field is a winery that has a great barn/farm look and feel. There are ducks and geese and other animals running amok, which gives the place a great vibe. Unfortunately Old Field produces (in my opinion) awful wine. I found their wine to be very sour, lacking in flavor, and just overall unpleasant. The people who work there are wonderful and very friendly, they have a dog that is also very sweet and friendly, but their wine is just... undrinkable. Really - I couldn't finish my tastings. I *NEVER* dump my tastings - even at their worst I try to take in the whole sample and appreciate it for what it is. Not this time. I just couldn't do it. Please bear in mind, this is just my opinion, and wine is COMPLETELY subjective. I saw people signing up for their wine club, so hey, someone loves Old Field's vino... just not me. read more

The Old Field is truly one of a kind! The vineyard is so beautiful and intimate, and offers a setting that you won't find anywhere else on the North Fork. The wine is extremely high quality, with expertly crafted reds, whites, and blends that all come from their on-site vineyard. I was shocked the first time I tried their wines, as they stand out even among the big names on the NF (on the affordable side as well). Aside from the setting and the wine, it's the people that set the Old Field apart. Perry & Ros (daughter & mother) are two of the most fun, welcoming, and hardest working vineyard owners you'll meet. They do all of the growing, winemaking, and wine tastings, but still find enough time to connect with you on a personal level. They are always happy to share the history of their vineyard (of which there is a lot) and answer any questions you might have about wine. You will fall in love with them. We recently did the "Winemakers Journey" (https://theoldfield.com/ice-house/) which included a private tour of the vineyard, the wine cellar, and lunch at their newly restored Ice House. It was sooo much fun getting to walk through the vineyard/cellar with Perry and learn about the grape growing process, and to tour their lovely property which has stunning views of the waterfront. The tour concludes with a really nice lunch and wine tasting, all for $70 (should be much more..). This was a little difficult for us to find. We were looking at a North Fork winery app on our phone and the location was a bit off. When we called for directions, the woman on the phone was very thorough and helpful. The tasting room is in some outbuildings of the farm. We literally had to wait for the chickens to cross the road before we could park the car. This was part of the charm. This is a family run winery/vineyard/farm and the family was there pouring the wine. I found Old Field to have a very welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. It has a much more rustic feel then every other winery I have been on Long Island. This felt much more like the wineries I have been in more rural Sonoma and Lake counties in California. I also found the wine to be very good. They were tasting 3 different vintages of Merlot from grapes grown in the same vineyard. It was very interesting to taste the difference between vintages with all being wines I would like more of. I left with six bottles and will definitely be going back the next time I'm in the area. read more
