What an adorable little vineyard! This was literally my first tasting "out east." The atmosphere reflects the age: apparently it has been around since the 1900s. The shed you are in I think is a repurposed chicken coop. The decor is very rustic but homey. The owner was incredibly nice. She chatted about the history of the vineyard, grounds, north fork, etc. It was so cozy to sit playing checkers and enjoying the wines. My personal preference was for the chardonnay (oaked) and the cab franc. They are mostly dry wines, nothing too sweet, but that fits my palate. Another group was in the adjoining room and they had brought their own cheese/salad plates to enjoy with the tasting. This was well worth the trip- will definitely be back. read more

My wife and I truly enjoyed our visit to this charming, quaint winery on the far end of the North Fork. Perry, our host, could not have been more polite or accommodating. We learned so much about the wineries history and the surrounding area. The wines were wonderful - our favorites were the 2010 Merlot, the Cacklin' Rose and the barrel aged Chardonnay. The only reason why this winery is getting 2 stars is because of the animals and rustic farms, other than that everything else about this winery gets 2 thumbs down. I was really excited pulling into this winery. I did some research previously before and saw that they boasted that they are the only winery that has a private beach. On their website they have beautiful white arches and a pretty beach setting. I picked a couple of wineries to take engagement pictures of my brother and his fiance (and of course sampling some wines as we went). As soon as I walked into the barn there was a man working there doing tastings with a huge attitude. He was of asian descent and completely rude to us. He made us feel like we didn't belong there because we were the youngest (30 years old) people there. The way that he was talking to the 4 of us, made us feel beneath him so we moved down and was eventually greeted by a younger man that poured us some samples. The young gentleman poured us samples...and that was it. He didn't say anything to us about what the wines were made of. I bought a souvenir wine glass from him (I like to collect them) and waited 15 minutes to get it. Eventually an older woman came over to us, which I had a feeling, possibly owned the place. She poured us the rest of our wines and actually explained them to us. I asked her about taking pictures by the water (because I saw a rope that said DO NOT ENTER) and she said that we weren't allowed to. She also asked how I knew that information....I said, "It's on your website..." She said that only high paying brides are allowed to see that view and they would be pretty mad if I was allowed to take pictures there...okay. Yup I get it. I came to your winery that you advertise is the only one that has a private beach, I sampled your wines, bought a glass and wanted to take a few pictures...the wines really aren't that good at all and your service was horrendous compared to other family owned wineries. Don't ever visit this winery...very pretentious atmosphere....ironically in a barn! read more

It's January and you wouldn't think to visit a vineyard but it's the best time! Its quaint and wonderfully personable mother and daughter owners make it extra special. I honestly loved it! This is THE best winery on Long Island. If you want great wines, from steel Chardonnay to full bodied reds this is the place. The staff is incredibly personable. The owner is always on premises, often serving the wine at the bar. They treat you like family. You are never rushed. It has a cozy, relaxed atmosphere, which is a stark contrast from many other wineries in the area. Definitely worth a visit!! read more

Wow. What a wonderful afternoon at 'Tastings by the Bay' today. Ros and Perry, a mother/daughter viticultural team hosted on the bay, part of an 1850's estate with views onto Shelter Island. We enjoyed a nicely composed cheese plate along with tasting notes and history that accompanied 5 of their signature wines. Ros did a great job describing the basics of wine making and attributes of the wines we tasted. Loved learning (and tasting) the difference btw a malic acid chardonnay (steel fermented) and the same grape that was barrel fermented and underwent malo-lactic fermentation. Great casual afternoon recommended for any level of wine enthusiast. Perry and Ros are happy to elaborate as much or little as you like. Plus, the family has a cool history of trade with Japan. I particularly liked this last release of the Commodore Perry Merlot. The bubbly Blanc de Noir from 100% Pinot Noir is also a standout. Delicate bubbles, yeasty and delicious. If you're lucky enough to snag a ticket and want nice wines, a view and welcoming hostesses, you can't do better. read more

Had a wonderful Friday afternoon at this beautiful vineyard right in the bay. My boyfriend and I enjoyed the private wine tasting overlooking the bay and sampled one sparkling, as well as six other wines. We ended up purchasing a bottle and their delicious Hot Pepper Jam!! The Old Field is a rustic, no-frills, family run vineyards and winery located on the eastern end of the Long Island wine trail. They feature numerous Bordeaux varietals (try the Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc) and two lovely Chardonnays, one barrel - fermented, the other mostly stainless-steel-fermented. These are not Napa-style wines, and that's the point. (If you want Napa, fly to San Francisco, drive north for an hour, and pay $20 per person per tasting while braving the crowds.) Long Island gets less sun and has a shorter growing season than Napa; thus, LI wines are less jammy, have more subtle flavors, and pair more readily with a wider variety of foods than Napa wines, much like wines made in Bordeaux, France. The Old Field is old-school and meant to be enjoyed accordingly: with calm repose and plenty of time to soak up the beautiful scenery and wandering chickens. I love the atmosphere at this winery. It is a small, family owned vineyard in a rustic, barnyard setting. They serve all dry wines, but I enjoyed the mixed flight even though I prefer semi dry wines. Plus with the purchase of their blush de noir, they make a donation to a local animal shelter!!! Love that!! The owners are really friendly. They allow picnics which is great. I chose 5 stars because they don't have 6. This winery is rustic, beautiful, and historic. As a local B&B owner, I can tell you that our guests adore this place. The property is huge, with a picnic area, down by the ice house, and pond. Bring lunch and buy your wine there! There are roosters and hens running around by the red barn tasting rooms, and the informal atmosphere makes you feel at home the second you arrive. The wine is really great, and they have a wonderful sparkling wine as well. They do weddings, host movie nights in the Summer, and I am happy to know this great family. They are the salt of the Earth. This is a family owned operation, not a giant corporation, so they put their heart and soul into their wine. Enjoy Long Island Wine Country! read more

This is a fantastic family run vineyard and winery. The owners and staff are knowledgable and incredibly friendly. My friend and I did the tasting by the bay, which is 5 wines (very generous pours) and a delicious cheese plate. The setting is stunning, outdoors right on the water. Setting is relaxed and you can stay and have an additional glass of wine after. They limit it to 8 per sitting so make a reservation! Great for seasoned and novice wine tasters alike. read more

This place looked very beautiful, but we never got to experience the wine-tasting. The samples of wine, the size of a shot, cost $4 each. A full glass was $$9-11. A bit high I would think for a wine of unknown quality. After waiting for 10 min in a not very crowded room, one of hosts finally asked what wines my friend and I liked to try. She then proceeded on serving other people who got in later than us but were buying cases of wine. After she was done with them she asked us again about our choices, only to continue serving a new group of people who just came in. Well, it might make a good business sense to serve people who buy larger quantities of wine but we soon felt stupid standing there for yet another 15 min and watching everyone else but us getting served. I never thought that wine-tasting can be so difficult and unfun! Thankfully our bad experience at the Old Field was redeemed at the Croteaux vinyards. read more

If you are proud of your wine, you shouldn't be serving very small pours in little plastic glasses. It's an insult to the wine and any customer who appreciates good wine. I would like to like this vineyard because of the rustic and laid-back setting, but the quality of the wine was average and manner of presenting not indicative of a management that cares. read more

The old field is a lovely small family run vineyard, and the prettiest spot on Long Island to have a picnic. It's definitely a farm-like environment with chickens and ducks running around as you do your wine tasting. The family that runs it are some of the nicest people around. Be sure to ask about the summer time movie series on the lawn. It's a great little secret thing to do ( they don't publicize it very much to keep the crowds smaller). The vineyard's lawn sits right on the bay. But it's a special treat only during the summer since the rest of the year they keep thay end of the property closed, except for weddings. I've also been to weddings here, they're quite spectacular. I know there are people who have been in their wine club for decades, something that's unheard of in the wine business because the family is just so welcoming and special. read more

The Old Field has a great mix of friendly people, an incredible setting, and fantastic wines. It feels good to give business to a family-run operation, especially such nice people. But more importantly, the wine is terrific- the bubbly is absolutely delicious-- dangerously so! The chardonnays are also very good, both the barrel fermented (nice and oak-y) and the "Mostly Steel", which is light and crisp-- perfect on a hot day. The Rooster Tail, a red table wine, is the type of wine that goes with anything, or can stand alone. I love the peppery qualities of it, and the prince point can't be beat. I can't think of a better way to spend the day than tasting these yummy wines! read more

We went to a few vineyards down the the North Fork wine trail and this one was very relaxing. This place is especially suitable for people traveling with the family. Little kids will enjoy the huge space and the farm animals (chickens, ducks and goose...we even saw a wild rabbit hopping by). The wine is good and reasonably priced. I recommend going during weekdays to avoid a crowd and the 2 hour time limit on the premises. read more
