The Old Mill in Rockford recently reopened with the third generation of Arnie, grandson Stefan. He is very much a hands on owner/manager performing many tasks in the restaurant. Our server Emma was sweet and knowledgeable. Despite being very busy service was great. My daughter and I shared the turkey (also ham and beef available) Scandinavian shuffle. The sandwich is huge and I couldn't finish my half. It's a favorite from years ago at the Arnies on Leonard. We chose the fries which was an upcharge of $3 and well worth it! Delicious!! We also split a side house salad which was large and only $4.50. The greens are a spring mix with carrots, red onion, tomato and croutons. The ranch dressing is house made and yummy. We each had a glass of Prosecco. It was a fun experience and the ambiance is sleek and modern. It's worth a trek to Rockford as well as a second location on 28th SE.

The food was okay. Overpriced and not much flavor. Mainly just paying for the ambiance.

I love that the patio is right next to the water, it's a peaceful little spot to enjoy a meal in downtown Rockford.

The problem is top down from the General Manger, Shift Manager, and very poorly trained server. Also very average bar food for fine dining prices. When we arrived it was busy so we expected things to take a minute. However after sitting for 15 minutes we flagged down a waitress. She wasn't ours but took our order which we appreciated. Our server finally showed up. Took 5 mins to get water and another 10 to get our drink order. Then 40 mins latter still no food. The people who sat behind us arrived after us had their food and by the time we got our food they were done. All the while our server never came to our table. I flagged a busboy asked him to find our server and asked to see a manager. By this time we had already been there over an hour. The shift manager show up before our food and rather than apologize for the poor service he proceeded to tell us the excuses for why our food has taken so long. I finally got tired of his excuses I said "stop making excuses and get us our food". A few minutes later the food showed up. No silverware, salt/pepper, ketchup or drink refills. Again asked a bus person to help. Waitress never came back. After a few minutes the General Manager came out accused us of being disrespectful to his server and shift manager and proceeded to start swearing at us. We never said anything to the server and the only thing I said to the shift manager was stop making excuses and get our food. The GM again never acknowledged the poor service and accused us of swearing and being disrespectful. Never listened to us and asked us to leave. He threatened to physically remove me rather than listen to how bad the service was ‍ Incompetence at all levels. Save your time and money.

Lofted above is a great looking outdoors complete with heat lamps and a mini A framed covered area that can be rented for parties. We were greeted warmly by friendly staff and given a kids menu, draft and spirits menu, regular menu and restaurant week menu. Menus galore! We went with the 3 course meal (many items can be ordered on the regular menu) for $25. I ordered the tomato paprika soup and my husband got the split pea soup. Of the two, the split pea soup was the clear winner. Two kinds of pork (cubed and shredded), well balanced seasoning and texture married well to enhance a soup I've loved since childhood. I could've easily eaten a bowl for my meal. The accompanying homemade Dutch Rye Bread, though I'm sure it's authentic, I didn't care for. It was dense, soft and had an off putting flavor. The second course we had was equally delicious. My hubby had the beef and pork sausage overtop a bed of mashed potatoes with kale, onions and bacon. I loved the addition of kale and the sausage was tasty. Everything was well seasoned. My beef slow cooked with apples and beer was delicious. I wish it had been served with more beef. It would have been nice to have some bigger chunks of meat to dive into. The mashed potatoes they came with were good, but the potatoes with kale were the star between the two dishes. The kid's meals were also good. The hamburger had a nice smokey flavor with a tasty side of fries. My daughter didn't care for her Mac 'n cheese, but that's because it was too refined for her palette. The Gouda cheese was complimented by the egg noodles. The third course was dessert. I tried the restaurant Flip custard: Dutch custard, fruit compote, and topped with a dollop of Greek Yogurt. It came with a cute spoon that gave the perfect portions and the flavors all complemented each other well. I would order this again and again. It was a great balance of tangy, fruity and sweet. My husband had the stroopwafle icecream. It was also good, and came with a cute mini stroopwafle. I washed all this down with their Bier Distillery Lager and tried a flavored banket spirit. This restaurant originally was just a beer and specialty liquor spot. I love that they now serve food, because that was the highlight of our evening. I wish this establishment was closer to our home, but perhaps will come back when the weather is nicer to enjoy the outdoor patio. Definitely come and check out this The Bier Distillery for yummy Dutch inspired food and drink! Worth the drive.

I ordered the Verboden which had apple brandy so delicious. It's fall in a glass and then the butterbier rum butterscotch cream soda and whipped cream. My sister enjoyed the almond joy. Now the food wow is a good word to describe what we ate. We started with the bitterballin which is beef croquettes with spicy mustard and a cup of split pea soup. We split a burger with carmelized onions pickles and paprika mayo and had a garden salad with dill pickle vinaigrette They have so much to offer and it so unique.

As soon as you walk in, there are games, chips for sale, and a water cooler with reusable cups. The place was busy. Many folks eating and drinking. There were two seats at the bar, both on either side of a young lady; so I asked if I could take one and she said yes! As it turned out, she was an off duty employee just having a beer. We chatted a bit while I ordered a flight. I love that the flight is not limited. You can have as many 2.5 ounce beers as you want! Each are priced separately. I perused the food menu and checked out the merch. Sadly they did not have the tshirt I liked in my size. They also sell beanies, glassware and hoodies. Oh, and beer to go! I enjoyed the two IPAs with Good Good being my fave, followed by IPA#1. The porter was good and so was the Kona brown. The fade was my least fave, and it pretty much tasted like Guinness, but I did drink it all. I have preferences but I also have values! Lol. The off duty employee and I chatted awhile, even looping in the bar tender and my other bar stool neighbor, especially when it came down to naming the artists on the decorative candles (see pic). We were having so much fun that we decided on her having another beer and me getting a couple more samples. The Mosacca IPA was really good. The Economy, gotta love the name, was also good and the most affordable beer! Look at them looking out for the people. Loved this place. The locals are friendly. Did not eat but all the food I saw looked good! Would return to enjoy more beer, fun convos and to buy a size small shirt!

I tried 5 beers- solshine(wheat), fade(nitro stout), porter, rambler(red ale), Kona brown(coffee ale). I liked 2 of the 5. The Fade was a decent nitro oat stout. The Kona Brown a solid brown coffee ale. In my opinion, that is a pretty big miss for a brewery. And I didn't love any of them. My husband got the peach mango sangria which was quite good, although a bit sweet. I didn't try any of the IPAs so maybe those are good. Nice outdoor area and the food menu looked good. I wanted to like this place and would probably come back and sit outside and try some food.
