As Restaurant Week's final day draws to a close, we chose to try The Bier Distillery. Off a busy road, not too far from the West River Drive exit, is a well lit restaurant adorned with wooden barrel tables and chairs. Lofted above is a great looking outdoors complete with heat lamps and a mini A framed covered area that can be rented for parties. We were greeted warmly by friendly staff and given a kids menu, draft and spirits menu, regular menu and restaurant week menu. Menus galore! We went with the 3 course meal (many items can be ordered on the regular menu) for $25. I ordered the tomato paprika soup and my husband got the split pea soup. Of the two, the split pea soup was the clear winner. Two kinds of pork (cubed and shredded), well balanced seasoning and texture married well to enhance a soup I've loved since childhood. I could've easily eaten a bowl for my meal. The accompanying homemade Dutch Rye Bread, though I'm sure it's authentic, I didn't care for. It was dense, soft and had an off putting flavor. The second course we had was equally delicious. My hubby had the beef and pork sausage overtop a bed of mashed potatoes with kale, onions and bacon. I loved the addition of kale and the sausage was tasty. Everything was well seasoned. My beef slow cooked with apples and beer was delicious. I wish it had been served with more beef. It would have been nice to have some bigger chunks of meat to dive into. The mashed potatoes they came with were good, but the potatoes with kale were the star between the two dishes. The kid's meals were also good. The hamburger had a nice smokey flavor with a tasty side of fries. My daughter didn't care for her Mac 'n cheese, but that's because it was too refined for her palette. The Gouda cheese was complimented by the egg noodles. The third course was dessert. I tried the restaurant Flip custard: Dutch custard, fruit compote, and topped with a dollop of Greek Yogurt. It came with a cute spoon that gave the perfect portions and the flavors all complemented each other well. I would order this again and again. It was a great balance of tangy, fruity and sweet. My husband had the stroopwafle icecream. It was also good, and came with a cute mini stroopwafle. I washed all this down with their Bier Distillery Lager and tried a flavored banket spirit. This restaurant originally was just a beer and specialty liquor spot. I love that they now serve food, because that was the highlight of our evening. I wish this establishment was closer to our home, but perhaps will come back when the weather is nicer to enjoy the outdoor patio. I was visiting my sister and she took me here and I am so glad she did. It is amazing. The drinks are made with liquor they distill. I ordered the Verboden which had apple brandy so delicious. It's fall in a glass and then the butterbier rum butterscotch cream soda and whipped cream. My sister enjoyed the almond joy. Now the food wow is a good word to describe what we ate. We started with the bitterballin which is beef croquettes with spicy mustard and a cup of split pea soup. We split a burger with carmelized onions pickles and paprika mayo and had a garden salad with dill pickle vinaigrette They have so much to offer and it so unique. read more

I've had MANY great experiences at this Distillery. Multiple times I've come here just for drinks and I'm never let down. Their cocktails are what get me the most, but they also have beer and wine. They have seasonal menus along with their staple items. They also have a whole selection of full size bottles of spirits for purchase, and beer to go, too! Their food is very specific and different. If you are kind of a picky eater, you probably wouldn't want to eat here. They do have lots of seating choices - a balcony up top, some tables out front, and some patio covered and uncovered in the back! Ventured out a little ways and found this spot. A unique location with downstairs and upstairs seating and a back patio area so actually quite a bit of space. Some nice drink specials and good food. Our service was quick and friendly too. My wife got the burger and I went with the Wednesday special of wings. The wings were pretty tasty and had good flavor and my wife's burger was pretty tasty and good seasoning and delicious fries that came with it. There was a live folk type band playing while we were there but they also closed at 9. We'd venture out again based on this experience. read more

I am a huge fan of Bier Distillery! They have it all - beer, wine, and spirits. They also have awesome food and a fun and unique atmosphere. We have been here a bunch recently and have really fallen in love with their Ms. Pickles beer (the best hangover cure). They have some awesome and unique beers on tap - all brewed in house. I also learned that I am a gin fan, thanks to their Lavender Gin Martini - who knew?! That drink was life changing! They are constantly updating their cocktail menu, too - always fun and delicious stuff! Their food is awesome, as well. It's a dutch insprired menu, but nothing crazy and some standard favorites, too. We have had the bitterballen, smothered fries, cheese balls, meatballs and pub cheese - all wonderful. Especially the bitterballen! It's like a mini pot roast in a ball. I love the smoky chickpea and potato soup! Also, the cheeseburger salad + pickle vinaigrette? Bomb. Mac n Cheese, apple pie burger, & apple gouda toastie have all been great. I look forward to trying more of their food items! Stumbled across this spot since it was near the Van Gogh Immersive Exhibit in Walker. Kind of an odd spot since it's on a busy street, but they've definitely optimized the space! There is ample seating inside and out, but my friend and I opted for the bar. We had great bartenders, excellent cocktails, and I ended up buying a bottle of the Crescent Creek Bourbon. My husband and I stopped by for a rare date night out - he had a gift card. They have a nice area out back with heat lamps and picnic tables but the mosquitoes were out so we ventured back inside. I am dairy free currently and the server was very helpful in guiding me to my options on the menu. I got a Rosemary Gin Fizz to begin with and my husband got the Heartbreak Lemonade, both were delicious and understated - not too strong, not too sweet. My entree was so amazing I am still thinking about it - Nasi Goeng, basically Indonesian fried rice. Slightly sweet, but not overly so. The chicken was perfectly cooked and the side of cucumbers and tomatoes was refreshing. 1st time in, we drove 45 mins to come try it out after seeing photos on Facebook. Cute spot, lots of seating, good food. We had the burgers and they were very fresh & hot which was very pleasing. The drinks are not weak or watered down, they serve you well. I had a Manhattan for the 1st time & it kicked my butt. Also had the Apple cider sangria, not over sweet, pretty good. Hubby had a hot toddy and blonde draft. We were both very pleased. Service was great! The only downside is that I think they need pictures for their drinks. I was intrigued by the photos of the drinks I saw on fb, but the drink menu there had no pictures. Great service, good drinks and AMAZING food! We originally were attracted to this restaurant because they had fried apples on their dessert menu (I had something similar at an apple festival years ago and have been searching for something similar since, these did not disappoint!!!!!). We shared some fantastic hand dipped onion rings, dill pickle soup (no westside cafe, but still good iykyk), and got sandwiches. Both the apple gouda toastie and apple pie burgers were great. Completely stuffed but wanting what we originally came for the fried apples for dessert were absolutely perfection! Only negative of our trip was sitting in the barrel chairs as they were a weird height for the tables and our sandwiches were messy and needed some close chomping but they had other options we'd use in the future when we return. Bier Distillery is a great change of pace from the local breweries. They have a great barrel tables and large metal and wood stools, with a great space and atmosphere for trying new drinks. Each time I've been here it's a bit empty which makes it slightly awkward, so I wished they had music or something playing. Their bartender wasn't too attentive to the table either though we were the only table occupied. They have a small snack menu, so we ordered the pita chips with hummus which were delicious, we'd definitely order them again. For drinks we tried the butterbeer which tastes like cream soda (which I liked but the other 3 in the group really disliked saying it was too sweet and lacked alcohol). I also had their moonshine margarita which was just ok. I'd be willing to give them another shot with a more staple drink like an old fashioned and see how their liquors taste. I also had a flight of their beers and they are just brilliantly brewed. For dinner I ordered the Dutch boy burger and it was the best burger I've eaten in Grand Rapids. It reminded me a lot of the burgers I ate in the west coast at in-n-out. Of course it wasn't the same but the burger to bun ratio was very similar. Today's restaurant mentality is that if your burger isn't massive that people will complain. They keep the patties thin and give you the option of 1/2/3 patties. The bun was very fresh and toasted to perfection. Will probably be the only place I'll be going for burgers while I live here. The fries weren't too impressive but mainly because I don't like thick fries. I'll probably go with the salad next time. The order time was a 3, but only because they were short staffed and it was so packed. They apologized many times and made up for the wait with delicious drinks and amazing customer service. If you haven't been here because it's off the beaten path and too north from you then take the time. Definitely worth the visit even if you're just looking for drinks. At some point they will have to expand because they have a great product and will continue to bring in business. Also, they have live music which is a huge plus for me. Genuinely want to leave 0 stars because I'm very disappointed. I see another review that has a similar story, so this behavior is obviously a pattern here. Went here with my boyfriend to get a cocktail and try a new place and celebrate my birthday (we just moved here). We ordered drinks online (QR scan, order in app and pay via Apple Pay). When our drinks came, we accepted them, and began to drink. Then, the ONLY other couple upstairs with us got served their drinks about 5 minutes later. The waitress realized she accidentally gave us their drinks and vice versa. My boyfriend had the same drink as the other man, and both myself and the other woman got dessert-style drinks, so it was easy to see how we as customers mixed up that they were our drinks. Never been here, so I'm not sure exactly how my drink should've looked. The other woman kindly accepted my apology for accidentally taking her drink (even though it was served to us incorrectly). The woman proceeded to say "Go ahead and just have this drink!" And the waitress gave it to me, and she proceeded to make a new drink for the other customer. All was well. Or not Because when my boyfriend and I finished, the waitress came up to us with her IPad and started typing. She said we had a drink left to pay for, and my boyfriend explained we already paid online. She explained that we still had to pay for one more drink. I point to the one she mistakenly gave me and I say "This drink??" And she said yes. I bit the bullet and paid for the drink because I didn't want to argue and disturb other people's evening. I will, however not be returning and have already told my close friends in the area about the experience. There are plenty other local distilleries I will support instead in the future. You would think they would take the L on the mishap. Basic business y'all... if we didn't have to pay for that drink (that we DIDN'T even order), we would've been more than satisfied with our experience and came back a number of times more now that we live in the area permanently. Unfortunately, we will not. And because of their choice to make us pay (because God forbid they did for their mistake), they actually lose future sales from myself and my friends, which would've been more than worth the $12 I paid for a cocktail. Bier distillery is a great business. We have come with friends but this weekend had an event hosted here and they did such a great job. I think really come for the food! The entrees are filling and delicious. Love the Dutch boy burger, the cheese balls, and the meatballs. This is a place you want to order meats and cheeses! The cocktail menu is definitely tends towards sweet. I ordered the absinthe last time I was here. If you are new to absinthe this would be a good place to try it because they will walk you through the process and they do it the right way with ice water not sugar cubes. I was an immediate fan when I walked in and saw their bar stools, tables and chairs were all made out of old barrels. And I gave them a good sturdy shake too because I have sat in furniture made of barrels before that I thought I was going to break if I made any movements, these are not like that. They feel sturdy were comfortable and a real beauty to the eye. This whole place is set up nicely. I like the ambiance a lot. It is full but not, yet not scarce looking, the right amount of decorations and fillings. I took a seat at the bar, in the center of the place, where you can really get a great view of drinks being made. There isn't a whole lot of space between you and bartender, which is a great feeling to feel like you are a part of your drink that is in the making. We were suggested a few drinks and explained the menu. I decided to go with the Strawberry Club. I was looking for something not too sweet, yet something fun and new. I asked if any other ingredients were added to the drink that weren't listed and he said no. Basically, I was seeking out if there was simple syrup added in as well and no there was not. I don't like super sweet drinks so it is always a disappointment to me when I get a drink that it seems like a bunch of extra sugar was added to it - this is not the case here. My drink was not all that sweet, very delicious and dangerous to drink aka I could easily have gulped it down and asked for three more before realizing my level of intoxication. I am excited to come back and try some other drinks as well as a flight of spirits. I was here kind of a whim with not a whole lot of time, but very impressed with my first visit! They don't have beer on tap yet, just waited for the license to go through. We had guests this past weekend and when the idea of grabbing some cocktails came up I knew I wanted to try out the Bier Distillery. Nestled in a little strip mall off West River it has an almost industrial look from the outside but once you step in its charm is revealed. Warm and pleasant but with that still newish sparseness, the interior has really lovely custom made chairs and tables from reclaimed wine barrels and the bar and backsplash are wonderfully worn apple crates. The menu is quite wide and diverse (although no bourbon) in addition to spirits and cocktails they offer small plates and some desserts. Our group ordered the Heartbreak Lemonade, The PB&J, Maple Whiskey Sour, Calabaza Cream and the Verboden. All the cocktails are currently under $10, which is super reasonable. For food we split the pub cheese and the salmon canapes. First the cocktails... WOW. You are NOT getting shorted here. Everything was well constructed and strong. Delish. I liked them all but my personal favorites were the Calabaza Cream (hello pumpkin spice!) and the Verboden which we all agreed was so smooth it would be easy to get in trouble quick with it. Our food was good, the salmon was the best, the pub cheese reminded me of Win Schulers bar cheese. I think the price point on each could be just a little lower but the extreme affordability of the cocktails evened it out. We were fortunate enough to be given an impromptu tour of the adjacent distilling space by Joel Bier who was gracious and friendly with his time and in explaining the process and how he ended up distilling. Finally for dessert we tried the house made vanilla ice cream with a shot of rum. Amazing. It was so, STINKIN good. Wonderful service, wonderful drinks and yummy food. My work trips to Grand Rapids always include a stop at this craft distillery. Sara is a craft cocktail master. Her knowledge of spirits, ingenuity, and sophisticated palate have yielded a cocktail menu full of creativity and delectable combinations. She also has a fantastic memory and even remembered me and our conversation on my second visit (2 months between visits). Order a tasting flight of your favorite spirits or dive right into the cocktails. The Chocolate Covered Cherry Martini is decadent and garnished with my favorite cherries - luxardos. The Strawberry club is refreshing, a sweeter version of a traditional Ramos Gin Fizz. The Verboden is complex with a full apricot front and a cardamom finish. Hot Buttered Rum and Irish Coffee are perfect for crisp fall days. The Old Fashioned is a standard classic. I can't wait to go back and try new cocktails on my next trip. They also have an absinthe experience which I have yet to try. They have wormwood in planter boxes at the Distillery. There is nothing better for a yelper than the opening of a new restaurant or distillery. We hard about this place through friends and were dying to come in opening week. We really loved the area- the bar itself is in an area of town that doesn't have a whole ton of options and to now have a local distillery, one of maybe 4-5 In all of west Michigan is pretty cool. The liquor options themselves are pretty plentiful- they have vodka, gin, rhy whisky, "moonshine", pumpkin liquor, rum, spiced rum and more. They even have an absinthe coming soon. The staff is super friendly and the owner was there when we were there to tell us the story of the place. There isn't "food" which is typical for this type of place but they do have light snacks and they let you bring in food. The drinks themselves are pretty good. We had some that were better than others but overall all were good. The old fashioned is great in its simplicity. Small glass- nice strong flavor with noted of orange and sugar just like you want. The pb &j cocktail was interesting and half of our group loved it. Overall a pretty cool place that we will definitely visit again. read more

My wife and I have always been fans of their spirits and cocktails (Crescent Creek Bourbon and Sole Cry Whiskey are both phenomenal!), but we were blown away by their new food menu! We ordered the Beef Bitterballen, the Ham, Cheese and Onion Toastie, and the Boerenkool met Wurst tonight....all were amazing! The Bitterballen were savory-crunchy-melt-in-your-mouth wonderfulness and the Boerenkool met Wurst (sausage and potatoes) was comfort food at it's best. The Toastie will be tomorrow's lunch, but the nibble we tried tonight was fantastic! Our only regret is that, due to the current government mandated shut down of all restaurants' in-house dining, we weren't able to enjoy this great food in their new space! read more

My friends and I stopped here after having dinner down the street. We had a party of 6. The place wasn't overly busy yet but fairly busy. We sat upstairs and were the only guests seated there. After waiting about 15 minutes we wondered if we were supposed to go to the bar and order our own drinks. We ended up doing that, but found out that there are actually servers there. I had a gin heartbreak lemonade and pomegranate chi sangria. Both were decent. My husband had a flight and said the rye was pretty good (he has an incredible collection of bourbon and rye, so I think that's a pretty great compliment). Our other friends got the pomegranate martini and a honey drink, Dawa, that they raved about. The last couple got beer and said it was incredibly flat. Not sure that I'd come back but it was good to stop and check it out. read more

Have been here several times. The drinks are great. Especially love the Heartbreak Lemonade only with gin, not vodka. This past Wednesday, 10 of us girls sat outside...I suggested this place to them all and told them it was a great place where we'd get good service. Well, they were shorthanded and we got there at 4:15 pm, along with another 20 or so people. Being a Wednesday, the wings deal could not be beat. So we had a round of drinks, then our server brought 3 more that nobody ordered. Then we ordered our food and the first gal to order got her food. We waited another 20-40 minutes to get the rest of our order. All except for the last gal...her order got screwed up and she never got it until we were all done eating. Her meal should have been comped. I felt so bad for our server as she was really trying her best, but trying to use her IPAD to put the orders in clearly was not working! I plan on giving them another chance. I sure hope they can get more staff to keep up with everyone on weeknights with great specials.
