This certainly isn't Val's anymore. We waited over an hour to get out dinner and they weren't even that busy. Immediately when I got the Seafood Supreme I thought the Alfredo sauce tasted like the cheap canned stuff from the grocery store. My fiance had the crab cake and it tasted a bit overcooked and tasted like it had too much breading in it. I gave the seafood Supreme back and they asked me if i wanted something else, but after 65 mins I was already thinking about where I was going to go next. What about dinner tonight at The Olive, my wife asked, sure i said, Monday night can't be all that busy. Wow! It was busy with activity! Families obviously coming to eat after work, tables with couples in an intimate setting, everybody there to have a good time and eat- even a baby shower tonight with about 25 people. How could a small restaurant open about 2 1/2 years ago right before the pandemic, in a very, very local neighborhood, do so well? I know. Small enough to get personalized attention from the manager and staff, yet large enough that you generally can find a table during the week (maybe) and great food. Almost always two or three people waiting by the bench in front of the cash register for a takeout meal. My guess is, the locals would prefer this restaurant remains a local secret. This place was so good we got it twice this weekend. I love that you can order sandwiches or a dinner, that's a big selling point for me. We tried the toscana panini, the cheesesteak wrap, the chicken parm dinner; the chicken parm panini, and the hot roast beef sandwich. We all thought the food was excellent and the fries were exceptional, especially after a few minutes in the air fryer. On Saturday night we decided to try some desserts and were not disappointed, the tirasmisu and peanut butter pie were some of the best desserts we have had in a while. If you are tired of your subpar Italian food, look no further! My family has visited The Olive once before, thanks to our friend Fritz Reynolds, and have returned again (excitedly!). At no other restaurant have my younger siblings been excited to eat, nor has any other restaurant been able to recreate penne al vodka in the way my mom had it when we lived in New York, except for here. Of course that meant that for my mom's birthday there was nowhere else that I could think to treat to than her favorite Italian Place that brings her a little slice of home. For our family of six, we ordered two orders of penne al voda and one order of chicken parmigiana, along with an appetizer of clams in white wine sauce. Never before have I been able to feed my family with less than six entrees, to their safisfaction. Yet, here we are, no leftovers to be seen, battling our food comas to stay awake long enough to write this. Nothing I have ever tried from here has fallen short of exceptional. This is especially important because today is a holiday, Christmas Eve, and they still did an exceptional job in a short amount of time. Way to go! My hubby's lighthouse shrimp scampi and my salmon stuffed with crabmeat didn't have much flavor. Also, my salmon was also over cooked. Always loved the Olive, it was the towns secret place for byob Italian food. The food is phenomenal; however, during Covid, they started an up-charge uncorking fee. When we told them we don't need it bc our bottles were twist off, they then told us it's really a charge for the wine glasses because they are unable to get them from their supplier. So they charge to use THEIR wine glasses??? It's obvious they have wine glasses to use....Makes no sense to me. Seems weird. They don't charge for any of their other glasses. Tonight, we decided to go and see if they are still charging, lo and behold... they are! My husband brought his own beer and had a regular glass. I brought my own wine (which was already opened mind you), used ONE wine glass...THEY CHARGED US $6.00 un-corking fee for the use of ONE wine glass! I would give this place a 10 star review but this uncorking fee (which has nothing to do with uncorking) is a rip off. Many of our friends no longer come here because of that. It changes depending on who you talk to...one person said it was a uncorking fee for every 3 bottles, then they said it was bc they don't get their glasses from their supplier anymore.. which is it? I'm still over the top they charged us $6.00 to use one wine glass! We are not cheap in any way but this just seems to be a way to make more money. The waiter never mentioned that there is a cost associated with opening your bottle of wine. The cost was listed on their wine list. I was given a price for a banquet and was charged $3 more a person today. I was not notified of the price increase when they confirmed my reservation. I was also told that I would be charged the banquet price if I had over 19 people. I had 14 and was still charged the banquet price which is about $10 more an entree from regular menu. I called to get my $3 difference back and the owner refused. He was extremely ignorant and asked why did I pay. read more
